"Gamma" slider in Preview's "Adjust Color" window now absent in 10.6. Why?

In Preview, if one chooses "Adjust Color" from the "Tools" menu, a small window pops up with various sliders allowing one to make minor adjustments to the jpeg -- contrast, sharpness, exposure, etc.
In previous versions of Preview that came with 10.4 etc., one of the sliders was called "Gamma," and I found it very useful. I'm no photographer nor a professional graphics person, so I couldn't even tell you the exact definition of what a "gamma adjustment" even is, but in my experience I found that it seemed to lighten the dark areas of the image without overly lightening the already-light areas. By fiddling with a combination of the "Contrast" slider and the "Gamma" slider, one could rescue a photo that was badly lit or unevenly exposed.
But in the new version of Preview that comes with my Snow Leopard 10.6.4, the "Gamma" slider has been removed entirely, replaced by the far-less-useful "Temperature" slider, which instead subtly adjusts the tint to appear warmer or colder (red/blue).
What happened to the "Gamma" adjuster? Is there any way to restore it, or customize the "Adjust Color" window?
What a bummer.
I really like Preview's "Adjust Color" sliders, and find them to be much more convenient for basic photo sprucing up than the more complicated controls in PhotoShop and other pro-level programs. I realize I can adjust the Gamma in these fancier programs, but I'd much rather have all the needed adjustment-controls altogether in the same program.
Any suggestions? I don't want to have to try to re-install an ancient version of Preview just for this one feature.

I did a Google search & found - http://earthlingsoft.net/ssp/blog/2009/08/macos_x6part2
"*Gamma: Apple (finally) changed the gamma value of their display calibration.* There goes the classic Mac look… well it’s not quite as (a) my MacBook’s screen is a crappy dithering **** anyway so I am in no position to notice anything and, more significant in a global sense, (b) the magic of colour management means that you shouldn’t see the difference caused by the gamma change on colour managed images. What remains are the UI elements and Apple seems to have done a reasonable job of making things look all right. Just some of my old icons seem to look a bit different now. In the long run I imagine this change may be beneficial for people who publish images on the web without knowing what they do. "

Works here. Quit Preview, move all of the com.apple.Preview preference (plist) files from your user's /Library/Preferences/ and /ByHost subfolder to the Desktop, relaunch Preview, and see if that fixes things. If so, delete the moved files and reset Preview's preferences. If not, create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if it works there. Report back.

Hmmm, I wonder if that window is hidden or off screen? Have you moved the pic window around to look under it?
    Might try this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Preview.app -- tools -- adjust color = crash

I noticed that if I open anyfile.jpg with preview.app, and select the 'tools' tab, then 'adjust color' and drag the slider a little, it will crash, every time.

This sounds like an issue of an upgrade over tiger.
When a upgrade is done leopard is neatly overlaid over tiger and all existing extensions, plugins, etc. are preserved.
That does not mean that the plugins and extensions are compatible with the new OS.
If the overlay does not work you likely have an incompatible extension, plugin or system modification software installed.
The simplest cure is to do an archive and install, preserving user and network settings.
This allows for a new os to be laid down with no additional plugins or extensions installed.
You can then test the system after a software update.
At this point the problem should be gone.
You will need to reinstall any applications that are not drag and drop.
This should now be done slowly.
Reinstall an application, apply any updates and test.
Add applications into the system slowly making sure that if one brings a problem into the system that you can know that the program is the source of the problem.
Its a good idea before installing an application to know how to remove it if it turns out to be a problem.
Remember that applications that were released under a particular OS were not written for any OS other than that OS.
One more point. Leopard was meant to overlay Tiger.
If you start with an older OS you need to perform an archive and install because Leopard will not neatly overlay anything other than Tiger.
In fact, the installer will likely not give you the option to upgrade.

  • Preview: Adjust Color greyed out for PDFs

Just scanned a bunch of pages as a PDF and opened it in Preview. The levels were off so I wanted to Adjust Color, but it was greyed out. Am I correct in assuming that this only works with image files, not PDFs?

A PDF file cannot be edited like a document file except using Adobe Acrobat. You can edit the original document, then create a new PDF. This is also true of image files if they have already been made into PDFs.

  • Adjust Color option not available in Preview?

We scanned in some documents recently and need to adjust their contrast. Unfortunately, the option for Tools>Adjust Color is grayed out/unavailable. Any idea why this would be the case? The documents were scanned in on a Canon MX850.
    Thanks.

Mine are all jpgs, i.e., photos scanned with an HP 4-in-1 scanner or photos taken with a Kodak digital camera, downloaded into EasyShare and saved as jpgs.
I'd always used Preview, prior to the Leopard upgrade, rather than HP PhotoSmart or the Kodak program for much of my editing because the "exposure" and the "sharpen image" features were much better and could often salvage an iffy photo, especially the old circa WW II sepia ones.

  • CS5 Bridge thumbs and previews do not color match ACR or Photoshop

In newly installed CS5 Bridge (part of Suite), thumbnails and previews are not reflecting the color adjustments in ACR or of the image in Photoshop itself.  High Quality is still default as is writing cache to folders.  I don't see the old cache files in the folders either.  CS4 did not exhibit this issue for me.  Upon opening a folder, or after purging cache, thumbs are initially displayed with saturated color, but only for a second or 2 until they are redrawn.  Other applications that I have been working with for years and use the image previews are not displaying properly now that I have CS5.  What's going on here?  It appears that I am looking at only the imbedded previews!

    Narrowing it
down...I am working with a MacBookPro, using 2 monitors,
There have been more issues with two monitors but I can't recall them
    exactly at this moment.
A few things that come to my mind, first check the Camera Raw preferences
and double check if the option Apply Autotone Adjustment is NOT checked.
There have also been issues with Open GL and 2 monitors but that should
effect the images in PS and not Bridge I would believe. Also see what your
main monitor is in the OS monitor preferences and try what happens if you
    change that order.

  • Realtime Ram Preview Fail in Color Management is on

Hi. I m work with Ari Alexa footage as shown VIDEO: After Effects and Alexa - The Expurgated Version by ChrisZwar And I enebled mercury transmit in video preview preferences. When I want to ram preview After effects does not preview in real time. In info window appearce red text fps: 0,6/25 (NOT realtime) Note: project working color space is on
What should I do in this case

BeraT, if you disable Display Color Management (View menu > Use Display Color Management) and Mercury Transmit, do you get real-time playback during RAM preview?
Display color management and video preview in After Effects both impose a processing burden. As each frame is sent for display, additional work must be done to apply a color transformation or a dimensional transformation, respectively. If you have both color management and video preview enabled, both transformations are applied, plus an additional color transformation for the Mercury Transmit monitor. None of these transformations are cached, they are done live, on-the-fly and require additional processing at playback time.
The net result is that both color management and video preview require more processing power during playback. Larger frames, higher frame rates, and higher color bit depth increase the amount of processing power required, due to the increased memory requirements of the frames.
A faster processor would help give real-time playback more often, but you can also increase playback speed by lowering the memory requirements of the RAM preview frames: reduce the resolution in the Composition panel or the playback resolution in the Preview panel, reduce the project's color bit depth setting, or reduce the Frame Rate or increase the Skip rate in the Preview panel. Disabling the Use Display Color Management option will also help, as it removes one of the processing steps.
All of that aside, if you aren't able to achieve real-time playback when both Display Color Management and Mercury Transmit are disabled, that tells you the problem is coming from somewhere else. You'll need to provide more information about what's happening in your comp.

  • The display brightness can't be adjusted in Windows 7 under Bootcamp 4, iMac 21.5 (mid 2011) with ATI Radion 6770M..

The display brightness of my iMac 21.5 (mid 2011, with ATI Radeon 6770M) can't be adjusted in Windows 7 installed under Bootcamp 4. I tried moving the brightness glider either with apple keyboard hotkeys (on-screen glider), or within Windows control panel brightness control (within the power option), but the brightness remains the same. I've had all software (Lion, bootcamp, windows 7) up to date. Please help. Thanks.

I posted a similar case to yours a month ago and it seems we're in a minority on the problem.  What I have learned over this month was that Bootcamp drivers version 4 (Designed around OS Lion) was a BIG part of my issue with the ATI video.  The new IMacs seems to require a customized by Apple Verion 3.2 or 3.3 to operate normally.   Sadly, it's not as easy as just backing off version 4 and going onto 3.2 and getting the video slider back.   You need to reload Windows and avoid Bootcamp 4.0 as it seems a piece of V4 gets stuck in Windows.  I'm putting this suggestion to practise this week, guess I'll have more to say later.

  • Adjusting color saturation hp 5520e all-in-one

Some time ago, I had a HP c4580 photosmart all-in-one printer, which had the option available to adjust color saturation, warmth, brightness, etc.  I later purchased a HP 5520e photosmart all-in-one printer, which doesn't seem to have that option.  Is that option available on that printer, and perhaps I just haven't discovered it?  If not, does HP make a printer that does have that option, or that compares with the old c4580?  The option is seldom needed, but occasionally it is a MUCH needed option.

    Hi @blubrd,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
It's possible the Photosmart 5520 may not have the same features that the older software for your Photosmart c4580 did. To check though, you just need to be in the program you want to print from, select File then Print. Then on the print dialogue window you want to click on Preferences (may say Properties) and anything you can change will be on those tabs. You also have the option to click on Advance (or Advanced Options) for a few further things to change.
If you don't see what you're wanting under those screens, it is most likely not a feature that can be changed on the printer any longer.
With that being said there may be an HP printer out there with the features you need. To get more advice on what printer will have the features you're wanting you can always contact our Sales team (1-800-473-4732) even just to inquire
Hope that helps, have a great day!

  • Feature request: adjustable color cast removal

I've been sorting through some underwater photos I took while snorkeling, and the "Auto Levels - Separate" tool does a wonderful job of removing the aquamarine color cast. Unfortunately, it works a bit too well. It would be nice to have a slider that allows for variable removal of color casts, such as the one SilverFast provides for scanning.
    Cheers,
    Andreas

    David,
I haven't used Silverfast, but the "Color" tool is
superb. Use the hue or sat sliders along with the
range setting (at bottom of the tool) to really tweak
out just the color you want. I think you'll be
    delighted!
Thanks for your suggestion. I've gotten pretty good using the hue/sat sliders to tweak colors, particularly for adding some punch to washed-out skies.
You can think of the tool I'm requesting as a slider that lets you adjust between no adjustment and hitting "Auto Levels—Separate", e.g., pushing that button 1/4 or 1/2 the way down. You can accomplish the same thing by monkeying with levels for each channel or using the color tool as you describe, but a simple slider for removing color casts seems more straightforward.
    Cheers,
    Andreas

  • Trouble: absolute center background image to adjust when window size adjusts

    Hello DW experts!
I would really appreciate some help in getting my background image to be perfectly centered, and then adjust to always be in the center when the window size is adjusted. Here is an example of what I am looking for:
[http://www.wpdfd.com/editorial/thebox/deadcentre4.html | http://www.wpdfd.com/editorial/thebox/deadcentre4.html]   I have searched and found a lot of resources online, and I have tried there different options  (i.e. background: cover, absolute, z index etc.).  Here is a link to the homepage, goal is for the words Apex to show up in the center. It does not only if viewed on a large monitor. Goal is if the monitor is smaller or the person adjusts the window for the word Apex to adjust and remain as centered as possible. There will be content covering it on some pages so it does not have to be perfect.

  • Logic 8 crashing when double click on color in the color window

every time I try and create a custom color in the color window by double clicking on a color square logic crashes . Is anyone else seeing this? - sent apple crash report

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • How to print preview in a popup window?

There are couple of websites that I use frequently and they open links up into popup windows that I would like to print using print preview so I don't waste paper. Is there a way to do print preview from a popup window or can I open popup windows in a new tab?
    Please Help,

    Thanck you for your answer.
Unfortunatly, my plugin aim to help debug javascript code. So, it's not my code which directly open popup, it's the code I'm watching. I cannot give argument to window.open.
Correct me if I did not understand something, but your second option consist in modifying the settings of the user browser. How could I do that from a plugin ?
Also, I realized that when I open a popup without the plugin tester(cfx run), i.e. in opening firefox the usual way, popup windows have the menubar with plugin buttons. O.o
