Gamming Application Server
Hi All:
I ask this question before.
Are there currently gamming application servers on the market.
Can Tomcat, JBoss, WebLogic or WebSphere applications server be used.
Thank You
Dlwasler
When writing games, you have to get to market quick.
Don't write your own server unless you plan to stay
behind the pack. Use what Java gives you people. Don't
reinvent the wheel. Uh huh. That's why Quake 3 and Unreal used an off the shelf webserver, right? Oh wait, they didn't.
Also, if WebLogic and WebSphere are so bad, why do
they own 50-65% of the market? :-)Bwhahahah!!! Ok dude, you're headed toward silliest comment ever territory. First and foremost, I dare you to find me one action game (board games are not the same) that uses a J2EE server. You won't. You know why? Because it's too slow! When you're playing video games, a 2-5 second turnaround for each datapacket kind of sucks.
As for why WebLogic and Websphere are popular in the server market (where they're useful), it's because of marketing. Websphere is backed by IBM. There are tons of companies that use nothing but IBM. IBM mainframes, IBM PCs, IBM laptops, IBM service tracking, etc. They're getting screwed for sub-standard software (some of the hardware's ok, save for their laptops which break after the first year) and they don't care because "No one ever got fired for buying IBM". As for WebLogic, they were the first commercial EJB server to market and managed to corner it pretty quickly. Now they are perceived by managers as a "safe and large" company. Personally, I've found their stuff to be of pretty low quality, but maybe that's just me.
The one to really watch out for is the upcoming underdog of the J2EE market. JBoss? Nope. Oracle Application Server. It's basically a rebrand of Orion with some extra Oracle goodies tacked on. Surfice it to say, this server's been making the market it's whipping boy ever since it was introduced.

Iplanet application server 6.5 on windows xp
I'm trying to install iplanet application server 6.5 on windows xp. but for some reason it just hangs at the end of the install. Leaving my no choice but to quit the instalation. Has anyone sucessfully install 6.5 on xp? and could anyone help? would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance...I've just spent a day or two mucking around with getting the iPlanet 6.5 Application Server install running with IIS on XP, and have got as far as having the "fortune" application running. I also encountered the "hanging installation" problem on my 5th or 6th reinstallation. Here is my checklist of things to do:
1. As has been pointed out earlier, you must have a static IP address assigned to the machine you are installing on.
2. You should set up IIS before installing iPlanet - during the install you'll be prompted to set up the Web Connector for IIS.
3. If you find that the install hangs at the end (seems to be in the middle of building the Start Menu shortcuts), then deinstall from the Control Panel | Add Remove Software and run the install in Windows 2000 compatibility mode - this article lays out how to start applications in compatibility mode:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/games/expert/durham_og.mspx
4. You need to switch IIS to run in-process as per these instructions:
http://docs.sun.com/source/816-5788-11/app1.html#14411
see the section "Registering the Plug-in on IIS 5.0 running on Windows 2000".
Note that in XP the tab is called "Directory" rather than "Virtual Directory" and ensure that you grant Execute Permission to both Scripts and Executables (default is just Scripts I think)
5. You need to grant security permissions to the registry key
\\local machine\\software\\iplanet\\Appserver\\6.0\\CCS0\\HTTPAPI
as per the post by Vaidyanathan Iyer :

Did you copy the 2 JAR files in your /forms/java directory ?
Did you add them to your /forms/server/formsweb.cfg file (archive_jini tag) ?
As always when a Java Bean is in the game, display the Java Console at runtime to see if any error are raised.

I have a regular post for the top 3 or 4 fixes for that 9808 error. Obviously you are going to skip #1, since you've already tried it. Let me know how you get on with the next 2.
The top 3 fixes to itunes error 9808 seem to be
1) Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced, make sure that SSL 3.0 is checked and TLS 1.0 is checked. Also under Security make sure that the “Check for server certificate revocation (requires restart)” is unchecked. Then click ok and fire up iTunes.
2) The culprit was Norton. The users are set up as Admin and Standard. I have Parental Controls turned on in both Vista as well as Norton. Admin users had no problems connecting to iTunes. Standard users would get the error. I had to go to Norton’s Personal Firewall and add the program “iTunes Helper.exe” and set the option to “Allowed” (”iTunes.exe should already be in the Allowed category.) in order for the standard users to be able to connect.
3) close iTunes if you have it open right now. Then go to C:/Documents and Settings/username/Local Settings/Application Data/Apple Computer/iTunes. Delete or cut the preferences.xml file which contains your iTunes preferences. Then go to C:/Documents and Settings/username/Application Data/Apple Computer/iTunes and delete or move the preferences.xml file. For Mac users, there is only one file you must delete or move a to a new location and is located at User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.itunes.plist. Restart iTunes and it will recreate those two (or one) files with the default settings. Feel free to set your preferences back to what they were and then connect to the iTunes store and enjoy!
And #4, see if you can get into the iTS from a different windows admin account on the same PC. -

How to delete the record in the file present in the application server?
Hi,
I have two questions.
i) How can I delete a record based on some condition in the recordx in the file that is present in the application server?
ii) How can I lock the users whiel one user is accessing the file on the application server?
Thanks in advance.
SuvanHi,
If u want a frequent deletion this approach to delete a record from a file will havee unnecesary copy of records from one file to another and deletion of one file and renaming activities.
Instead what u can do is Add and field del_flag to ur record structure.
If u want to delete the record from a file just mark this del_flag as 'X'.
While processing u can have a loop like
loop at it_XXX where del_flag <> 'X'.
endloop.
This will logically delete the record.
When u r to finish the application at that time only perform this copying / deleting / and renaing activity
Hope this helps.
Cheers,

KartikeyaHi
need to create xml file in r3 application server (AL11) using PI.Can we achieve this using file adapter or we need to proceed with proxy.
To generate file at AL11 file directory use File adapter. Proxy is not required for this
Its giving the error as "Unable to create new pooled resource:FTPEx:Login incorrect".
1. Check with the Login credentials for the FTP service.
2. FTP User you use in communication channel must have 777 access to FTP location.
Thanks
Gaurav
