Ganged & Unganged mode

Hi all
I currently have an MSI FM2-A75IA-E53 motherboard, AMI Bios v2.2 with 2x4GB kit of dual channel memory & want to experiment with Ganged & Unganged modes but can not seem to find any DCT settings in the bios at all.
Does any one know where they are or if even available?
Thanks Darren

With current cpus AMD recommends just using unganged and that's why most boards don't offer to switch between ganged and unganged anymore. Considering performance unganged is optimal for current FX CPUs or A series APUs. Ganged/unganged has been relevant for early Phenom cpus.

  • A75MA-P35 and ganged mode

    Hi to all,
I've got this problem: I'm using a A75MA-P35 motherboard that seems to work fine, but in the first post message, about DDR mode, I read "GANGED MODE, 64 BIT".
Well, I use 2 sticks of Kingston DDR3 memory (freq. 1333 mhz). In similar boards I always see "ganged, 128 bit". can you please explain me the reason of those 64 bits (usually 64 for unganged mode, 64 + 64 for ganged)?
I tried two versions of bios (1.10 and 1.20)... same values
    thanx for support
    Paolo

Great!!! I supposed it was not a problem but a characteristic of my system...but did not find anything about this issue. You were able to do this... great.
by the way I repair and assembly pcs as a Job, and when I learn something new I'm happy
thanx again for your time and availability
    peace,
    Paolo
PS: I use this system as a "portable" little home audio recording station... reason, cubase ecc with an M-AUDIO Fast track USB.
This is the first time I use AMD for audio...no latency... good as a much more expensive INTEL

  • K9A2 Platinum Memory/RAID config Prob.

I have an MSI K9A2 Plat mobo and a phenom 9500 processor. I bought Mushkin 8500 DDR2 memory. In Bios it sets it at 800 mhz. What do I need to do to get it to run at the advertised speed? This is my first MSI mobo. What are the optimal settings for this set up in bios? HT speed? its at auto but im sure its not at the clocking it should be. Also the memory has a timing of 5-5-4-12 at 2.2-2.35v. When i go into the bios and try to select timing it has about 15 different fields to input. Thats the first problem....
The second issue is that I have 2 raptor HDD's. I initially set them up in a RAID 0 configuration. when the computer restarted after the config it gets to the screen where it detects the two hard drives in raid 0 and says FUNCTIONAL... Thats were it freezes..... I have to do ctrl+alt+del to restart and go back in the BIOS and select IDE under the sata menu. I can format both hard drives and both are working correctly. I was going to try and set up the raid again by hitting ctrl+f but I cannot access the SB600 RAID bios on the board anymore, It just sticks at FUNCTIONAL. Any Ideas? BTW i have bios vers 1.1 850w coolermaster ps and 2 radeon 3870s.

I connected both raptors to the PROMISE controller and I get the same thing FUNCTIONAL, then it stops!
Also whats the best HT speed and how can I get my memory to run dual channel?
everytime I boot up it says single channel.

"and how can I get my memory to run dual channel?

Its already in dual CH(since you have placed memory sticks in correct slots DIMM1 & DIMM2):
AMD's OverDrive Utility, note that it reads the memory controller as single channel because Phenom actually has two independent 64-bit memory controllers instead of a single 128-bit one. Current BIOSes and the AMD utility incorrectly report this as being single-channel.
        * A single-channel mode, when only one of the 64-bit controllers is active (occupied with memory modules)
        * Dual-channel ganged mode, the integrated memory controller is detected by a processor as a single 128-bit controller
        * Dual-channel unganged mode, the integrated memory controller is detected by a processor as two independent 64-bit controllers.
    Read this one as well:

Regarding the dual channel thing, I found the following on the OCZ memory forums:
Just some info for you guys.
ganged mode is 1x128bit dual channel
unganged is 2x64 bit dual channel
Some motherboards are reporting unganged as single channel at boot, this is not true, if you see anyone saying they have defective memory please point them to this post.
Ganged will give higher sandra bandwidth at this time than unganged, this is because sandra does not fully support phenom and is working in 1 thread mode. Once sandra supports Phenom unganged 2x64bit will take the lead
If you are running multi threaded benchmarks you need to be in unganged mode, this is the fastest way of running the system.
CPUID also reports my 9500 as single channel.
You can change it from "advanced dram configuration" locate "Unganged Mode".
Do a memcheck with Memtest86 as well.
Another note about RAID problems, according to promise SS above, you have running BIOS 1.1 or 113, in 1.0,112,P0C Promise version is different(2.8.10.30.0012) you may try to flash back to one of those.
But since problem persist when you connect them to SB600 RAID, probably problem is not there...
Can you retry with different brand HDD's(not Raptors, but with hitachi or seagate for example)?

Yes that's the one, I wasn't necessarily expecting numbers like that shown in the example (would be nice yea!) but much better then I'm seeing now.
    My 4+ year old laptop, A P4 3.06mhz with 1gb of ddr pc2700 scores a 20.50 on that test.
Maybe the test is tailored for the memory in the system so it's easier on it?
The program does have selection of baselines and more can be downloaded to use for comparison. The systems listed show the system processor and the amount of ram installed but not its type/speed.
So while my system memory is faster then the one similar system listed in one area its slower in others. That system may have slower memory installed in it then mine does without knowing it really doesn't tell me much.
I just don't think I'm getting my "moneys worth", while no I didn't expect a lightening fast system certainly much faster then I'm seeing out of it.
At the same time it is much faster then the system it replaced but only in a couple areas, cpu and video. Video is to be expected going from a FX5200 to a 9800 gtx. Dual core to Four core at a lower mhz but still a quicker.
The memory should be faster in this machine, much faster? but so far I'm not seeing it. Again I don't know the exact figure but I though what? triple that number at least?
While I didn't buy "top of the line" parts I tried to buy high quality parts and thought I did.
I get a total system score of 833.4 on that test and even that number seams low to me to for what the system is, if I'm off base so be it. To me it looks like the memory is still holding it back, if I could get the memory speed up the system would fly. If that is all this is capable of, the cpu/on die memory controller type deal, I guess I'll have to scrap it and start over but hope it doesn't come to that. Aside from a couple of the smaller hard drives in it all the parts are new.
Will settle into one OS in the end, use XP as my main at this time as I do not like vista. I look to upgrade to Windows 7 when its released and had put this system together looking toward that end.
I tried 64bit windows 7 but seen no improvement in memory use/speed with it either, in some ways it was slower.
I posted the same question over on G-skill's board to get some opinions from them but yet to get a response, maybe like here my question is not clear?
Anyway I appreciate all of you taking the time to read and respond, my first "AMD" and it looks like I need a little guidance?!  LOL

  • DKA790GX Platinum and memory issues

I've had my dka790gx platinum now for approximately 2 weeks.
    Build is as follows
    DKA790GX-Plat - bios v1.6
    AMD Phenom II X4 940
    2 x 2gb Corsair Dominator 1066 (5-5-5-15 @ 2.1)
    Gigabyte HD 4870x2
    Creative X-Fi Extreme GF-PS
    Tagan 900BZ
It has been working fine but all off a sudden I started getting the dreaded BSOD in vista 'apc_index_mismatch' and 'memory_management' - I've ran memtest and on the first test @ 45% the system reboots with 4gb of memory in. This happens whether it is running @ 800mhz or 1066mhz, I've also tried 4 x 1gb of corsair xms2 ddr 800mhz and get actually the same issue. If I run 2gb of memory then all tests are ran without any problems and again this is for both the dominator memory running @ 800 and 1066mhz, and also the xms2 memory.
I've then ran another test using the 2 x 1gb xms2 + 2 x 512mb xms2 (all ddr2 800) to give total of 3gb and ensuring all 4 memory slots are populated, and again all tests run fine.
I've tried the memory in ganged mode and unganged mode, but it doesn't make a difference, once i go over 3gb I have the problem, so is this a motherboard fault (i've opened support ticket but had to miss some info as it meant fully stripping down the pc to get hold of the sticker on the side of the pci slot) or a cpu fault seeing the memory controllers are on the cpu?

As far as overheating is concerned, it really shouldn't be a problem. Before getting a cooler for my RAM, it would get too hot to touch during full load, but would never run into any sort of problem. If you don't believe me have a look at what a SUPER*TALENT Stick looks like: http://www.pcstats.com/articleimages/200702/supertalentT1000UX2G4_full.jpg - Compare that to the dominator, The SuperTalent has to be just about the ugliest MEM-SINK you could ever lay eyes on  EXCELLENT RAM though
Kind of a really silly question here: when testing below 4gb, you are testing both sticks, right? I mean they look identical, a small distraction & you're putting the same one back in...happened to me...
yep memory was tested as single chips, also as stated previously testing 4 x 1gb of other memory caused memtest to fail, but 4 x 512mb passed, so did 2 x 1gb + 2 x 512mb
memtest fails all the time when have 4gb of memory in this mother in any combination, but using pc-check all memory passes, if my works had a ddr-2 memory checker then I would have also teste the memory in that as that will pick out memory faults better than any software
Also when the dominator is in slot 1 there is about 1cm between heatsink and dominator fins at the most, so this be a possible cause of the memory getting too hot especially as I would leave the machine on 24/7, but as I've re-setup another machine to do the stuff this machine was doing then i'm hoping i don't see the problem..

  • X-Fi XtremeMusic switch chann

So finally?I bought an X-Fi. Very satisfied, but?there's just one small problem.Right and Left channels are switched. In the THX Setup Console, however, the test sound?comes from the good channels (right is right, left is left). I don't seem to have that problem in Vista. WTF?

,I tried changing the output but the problem persists.
Can it be related I have 4 GB of RAM?

  • MSI K9 V2 SLI

Hi everyone, I'm new here and i need some advices/information, so i hope you can help me.
I have MSI K9 V2 SLI mainboard and yesterday i received a brand new unused Amd Phenom II x4 940 processor. According to msi, this one with the bios update should be working with my mainboard. The thing is, it's not working perfectly. When the clocks are setup to auto i recieve BSoD while booting win7 of all kinds (from page fault in non page area to usbport.sys error, every time it's different error), however when i underclock the cpu to  200Mhz with 13.5 multiplier = 2.7 Ghz (also working with 14 and 14.5 multiplier, but it's less stable) it seems that the system is pretty stable. When i start a game (for example bioshock 2/starctraft 2) it crashes after while. Can somebody tell me what should be the proper clock settings for this CPU on this mainboard or post at least some links where to find this information? Also can someone confirm me, that the HT(SB) link frequency is max. 1000 MHz for this MB.  I keep in mind that the mainboard is a bit older and perhaps it's not fully supporting this CPU, but i really would like to have it as much stable as possible. Thank you in advance.
P.s. English is not my native language, so if something's is not understandable, I'd like to apologize in advance.

Well last night I had gotten this card for my bday. I configured everything last night I had mic issues for a while but resolved it. So when it came time to shutting down and going to bed last night it took forever. Thinking nothing of it I just forced my computer to shut off. Today I boot up my computer there is no sound. I play around with the settings everything is reset but nothing is working that I have done so far. In the device manager there is no errors as well. Also shut downs are abnormally long now. Can anyone help?

  • MSI K9A2 Platinum + Phenom 9600 + 2GB Mushkin XP8500 cannot boot into windows

    Hi!
I am building my computer using the Spider platform and I ran across problems during booting into windows.
I am using MSI K9A2 platinum with Phenom 9600 and Mushkin 2Gb kit XP8500 ddr2 1066. I have no problem installing windows xp.
The problem starts when I install the utility and drivers that come on a cd from MSI, my computer requests to re-boot after installation and after
that it will not boot into windows. I can get to the windows logo and then the system reboots right away.
I checked the bios and it shows that the ram is running at 800mhz and i have tried running with just 1 stick and im getting the same problem every time.
Anyone knows how to resolve this?
    thanks!

Everything is stable now...I guess installing the driver from the MSI website is the best thing to do right now
I notice that my ram is underclocked to 800mhz instead of 1066mhz...I have update the motherboard BIOS to v1.2 and i checked that the ram is running on unganged mode...I tried adjusting the spd to 5-5-4-12 with voltage of 2.2v as suggested by the mushkin ram itself
    Any idea?
"I have update the motherboard BIOS to v1.2 and i checked that the ram is running on unganged mode..."
    That is the correct mode.
"I notice that my ram is underclocked to 800mhz instead of 1066mhz..."
1066 is not officially certified by JEDEC, also your memory probably don't have SPD configuration for that freq.
Contact to Mushkin for more details.
"I guess installing the driver from the MSI website is the best thing to do right now"
    Yep
    "Everything is stable now.."
    nice

  • Feature request FCP-7...To view 2 tracks without using multicam ?

Many of us work with 2 video tracks one above the other, sometimes I do not want to set up multicam to see both tracks simultaniously but how difficult can it be when looking at 2 video tracks would it be to allow us to view the footage underneeth track 2. Workarround is tedious, lowering oppacity of T2 or making box wipes in the motion tabs etc, this is fine till you are editing HD. So there it is...a way to view 2 tracks simultaniously without invoking multicam.

a way to view 2 tracks simultaneously without invoking multicam
For now, the Playhead Synchronisation mode Gang will get you halfway there ...
Place the playhead where you want to see both clips and then double click the lower (hidden) clip, Then choose View menu *> Playhead Sync > Gang*
Now, as you move the playhead in the canvas/timeline the image in the Viewer will be updated to show the equivalent frame from the ganged clip.
... but this only works at a clip level and not at a track level. If you are working with multiple short clips then consider nesting the track and then ganging to the nest.
(Note to Apple Developers: It ought to be easy to extend the Gang to work at a track level ie add a Gang Track mode, by exactly the method above whereby the track could be treated as a virtual nested clip)
Another way to quickly view the clips on a lower track is just to toggle clip or track visibility of the upper clip/track. Ctrl B is the shortcut for toggling a clips visibility. If toggling track visibility beware losing all your renders ... use Ctrl Z (undo) to toggle the tracks visibility back on as this will also bring back any lost render links.
As to a formal implementation of a new feature to view all tracks given the existing GUI, heres what I'd be thinking:
Similar to the common DAW function of stacking takes and auditioning them (STP can do it) I would imagine that being able to stack video clips and then view them all simultaneously (without having to set them up as a Multclip) ought to be a worthwile feature.
I'd see it working using a simple toggle key to open and close a QuickTake window or some such which would display all the clips at the playhead position similar to a MultiClip view. Similar to the Multiclip functionality, in the QuickTake window, clicking on the clip you want, or using a keyboard shortcut to switch, would make the chosen clip the active one (setting the Clip Enable/Disable Status accordingly for clips). Clips on tracks not targeted by Auto Select would not be referenced and/or affected by this mode.
Personally, in the For What It's Worth category, I think EDIUS's implementation of the Multicam workflow is amongst the best I've seen. You stack your clips on the timeline and then switch to Multicam mode (F5) ... no convoluted setup process, just instant Multicam functionality with whatever is on the timeline. Another key press to toggle it back to the normal edit mode.

Ok I have searched this board for anyone having this trouble and cant seem to find it.  Now I am thinking I bought the wrong board, so here is my problem.   K9A2 CF-F V2 MB w/ Phenom Tri-core processor with 2 sticks of 1GB of OCZ 1066 ram = 2gb total on in each slot 3 and 4 but the slots are different colors but according to most that shouldnt make a difference,  I have changed every setting in the bios that I can see but the fastest I can get the ram to run is 800mhz.  some one please help.  I saw where someone says to change the volt setting in bios for the mem. but I cant find where to change that, also saw something about 5-5-5-18 t2 so I did that but what about the rest of the settings they leave at auto but still no avail then I saw another post say to set them at 5-6-6-18 T2 still nothing wont boot with either of these configs, what in the heck am I doing wrong starting to think that the MB wont run OCZ mem.  maybe different mem would work what you think?  like I said 667 and 800 will work but 667 seems more stable. ok thats it for now by the way 580 watt power supply .

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum BIOS v3.4 - Not compatible with DDR2 1066??

So... I've been going through OCZ Tech Support for about a month now.
I have a set of DDR1066 PC2-8500 Dual Channel ram.  When I first installed it, and set it to run at 1066, I had nothing but problems and went through OCZ's tech support, went through a bunch of trouble shooting, and got an RMA on the set.
I sent it back to OCZ and it has been replaced with a new set, and I am still having problems getting this new set, to run at 1066 without it crashing constantly.
OCZ is now telling me that, since this is now two different sets of the same RAM, that is not working and refusing to run at 1066; but runs fine at 800... OCZ is now telling me that there is likely a problem with the BIOS on my Mobo not properly supporting 1066 Ram??  I'm running the latest BIOS of v3.4.
    Is this possible?
I think I've read that other people are using this Mobo, with the same BIOS, and are having no problems with their DDR2 1066, correct?
Problem I am having is when I set my BIOS to run my ram at 1:2.66 for 1066; then try to run things like Crysis, Far Cry, SPORE, Second Life, etc... then the system constantly crashes.  Everything else seems to run fine, Windows runs fine, internet browser runs fine, can watch TV, watch Movies and all this and never have problems.
But when I try to run a game; it constantly crashes but ONLY when I have the ram set to run at 1066.

    Hello Bas.
    I've tried all slots.
I'll repeat here, what I last posted on OCZ Forums in my latest thread there...
    Ok.
For starters; through all the testing, the following settings never changed.
DRAM Timing Mode set to BOTH
    Bank Interleaving set to AUTO
tRTP, tWR, tRRD, tWTR all set to AUTO.
1T/2T Memory Timing is set to 2T
    DCT Unganged Mode is Enabled.
    SLI-Ready Memory is Disabled.
NOW.  The changes that were Tested.
Both Sticks in Dimm slots 1 and 2.
I've changed DRAM Voltage to v2.10 as advised.  Still crashing.
Tried changing it to v2.20 next.  Still crashing.
Changed it back to v2.10; and then set CAS, tRCD, tRP,tRAS and tRC to 5-5-5-18-27.  Still crashing.
Left timings as previously set, changed to v2.20; still crashing.
    NEXT.
Moved both sticks into dimm slots 3 and 4.
Left timings as previously set, changed to v2.10.   Still crashing.
    Changed to v2.20.  Still crashing.
    Changed to v2.00.  Still crashing.
    NEXT.
Left Timings as previously set.  Voltage set to v2.10.
Removed 1 Stick from Slot 4; left 1 stick in Slot 3.  Still crashing.
Switched sticks in Slot 3; Still crashing.
Removed stick from slot 3, placed same stick into Slot 1.  Still Crashing.
    Lastly...
Reset all settings to Default/Auto, set RAM back to 800mhz.
    No more crashing.
At this point I do not know what else to do, and OCZ is telling me it is a problem with the BIOS that I am using.  This is the SECOND set, of this same ram.

  • A Extremely Fast Read Speed File System

Other day i was playing a game and get annoyed with the long loading times between levels, then i raise a question to myself...
There is no File System optimized for Read Speed?
I did not want one "bloated" with journaling, snapshots and all those nice all use optimizations.
I just want a plain Bare, Very simple, File System that is indisputably fast at Read Speed!
It can also be processor demanding, it is not a problem for this use case...
Someone know a File System Like that?
What is the viability(and complexity) to make one?
    Sorry by the bad english!

This is just a guess here but how much data do you need to load?
If it is a lot of MB not even the best filesystem in the world can speed that up, to make things worse I'm guessing that you aren't loading the data from contiguous files on the HD.
To add another variable to the way hard disks perform there is the possibility of having some data compressed and this will make it depend on how fast is your cpu.
As far as I know some compression formats although very efficient can have a very big speed penalty, also the speed and configuration of you memory subsystem can impact performance as well. Also if the data is compressed in a way that you can't use multiple cores to decompress it then it doesn't matter if you have a system with a single core cpu of one with 100 cpus.
Sometimes having as much ram as you can will be the best option, sometimes having the fastest ram possible is best.
To make things worse, newer systems seem to add another degree of complexity to this as for some loads one type of memory association is better and for other loads other type of association is better (I'm thinking of ganged / unganged configuration in the bios).
In my experience, when using ext3, if you add noatime and nodiratime to the mount option you will get a bit better performance, of course different filesystems will have different performance when reading but as far as I know no filesystem is the best of all for everything, so consider your overall experience.
Is it worth having a system that can have a speed penalty when used in everyday tasks just for the sake of having one game load the levels faster? Also how long will you be playing that particular game? Is it worth all the trouble just for one game you will stop playing in a couple of months?
On the use of SSD hard drives .... I've been more tempted to get one before but .... although read speed and access times are first class it seems there is more to this kind of drives than what meets the eye, some drives seem to behave terribly when writing under certain conditions (typically when there are multiple write requests), again the overall speed of the system, not just when using one program.
After considering all the benefits and downsides if you still really want faster load times for that game then the best way to find out the faster filesystem is to try them all and time the load times.
    Happy benchmarking .

  • Msi K9a2 platinum with memory

    Dear,
I have bought a MSI K9a2 platinum with a AMD Phenom 9600. I have placed 2 sets of these memory G.E.I.L GX22GB6400UDC4. In the manual they said that I have to change the memory settings in the bios to run at 4-4-4-12.
When I look in the bios, I see a lot of memory settings to change. Which one do I need to change to run at these settings?
    Thanks,
    Rafael

    1. If 40 represents tRC (which it probably does not): it's too high. Set this value to Auto in your BIOS, and set tRC to 20 or 21.
    2. You can't, there isn't any setting for it. But since you have four sticks of memory that fill up all of the DIMMs, there is no other option than to run it in dual channel. Software might detect it as single channel because of the Unganged Mode setting, which creates two separate 64 bit channels (but is obviously still dual channel)...
