Gapless in Itunes 7 ?

Just went to see the new features of Itunes 7.0 and one of them was a highly requested one apparently:
Gapless Playback
Live albums, classical works, or any work that sounds best when it’s continuous, now seamlessly transitions from one song to another.
Would that be the same on the Ipod ? Is it working already with our library or do we need to read again all the CD in order to enjoy the gapless ?
Lastly I noticed some threads about a "reset" issue with this new Itunes 7.0 so I take it as wait for a while before downloading it. (am i right)

GMBL: Yes, there is a problem with the iPod resetting when using podcasts after updating. I don't think anyone's nailed down the exact specifics. Some have suggested that it has to do with the bitrate of the podcasts. I'll be testing this tonight and will post something later.
I'm a heavy podcast user and would not have upgraded if I'd known I would have all these problems. If you are also, I'd recommend watching the forums before making the update to see if/when it's been corrected as it effectively cripples your iPod's ability to play podcasts. If you don't do podcasts, it shouldn't affect you. I have 15GB worth of audio and nearly 10GB worth of videos and have not experienced any trouble with any of it. Only podcasts seem to cause this spontaneous reset.
I know I haven't provided any answers, but hopefully I can help you avoid some of my current frustration with Apple.

  • ITunes 8.0 Crashes When Analyzing Gapless Playback

I made a smooth transition to iTunes 8.0 and had no problems loading my library or having Genius search through my library about a month after the transition. The problem began when I attempted to add about 2,000 song to my library. The songs were added fine, but when iTunes began to 'analyze gapless playback', iTunes got stuck on one song. Eventually, iTunes froze, then Vista froze, then Vista restarts automatically. This problem now occurs every single time I open iTunes as it will never be able to analyze every new song without freezing. A couple of times, I have actually received a blue screen error as a result of iTunes freezing. The same freezing also occurs when I tell Genius to collect information about my library.
    What I have tried:
    1) I have tried removing the file that iTunes becomes stuck on. This did not work, iTunes only got stuck on another seemingly random song when 'analyzing gapless playback'
    2) I have tried to click the 'x' option in order to stop the 'analyzing gapless playback', however, iTunes archives the songs that it has already analyzed before it freezes, so once iTunes is restarted, the song that freezes the computer is the first one to be analyzed.
    3) I have tried removing every single component of the iTunes program from my computer and reinstalling a fresh copy. This does not work, I still have the same problem.
    4) I have tried reverting back to an older version of iTunes (7.6). This did not work, iTunes still could not finish 'analyzing gapless playback' without freezing.
    5) I have tried downloading the 32-bit installer for iTunes so I could run it as a 32-bit process, however, when trying to install, an error occurs that says that I should download the 64-bit installer.
    6) I have tried deleting my iTunes library file and the entire iTunes file all together. I still have the same problem once I load my music again.
I know other people are having similar problems, but I didn't read about anything that couldn't be fixed by what the steps I tried above. If you have any advice, please email me and let me know. I honestly can't do anything in iTunes and it is the most important program on my computer. Thanks for your help.

It is most likely that there is a track in you library that is causing trouble and the trick is to find it and remove it from your library.
Then iTunes should be able to complete the gapless playback calculations and then it won't happen every time you start iTunes.
A way of doing it is to create an alternative library. Un check "Copy to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" in Preferences during the test.
Then start adding tracks to the test library a folder or a few folders at at time until the problem starts. Then go back and try and isolate which track it was.

  • Gapless works in Itunes but not Ipod

    Hi guys
I'm trying to get gapless working on my new Ipod (80 gig version) - it's fully up to date with the latest firmware, and the gapless works in Itunes but doesn't work on the Ipod. There is still a small gap between songs (though it's MUCH better than my old 20gig 4th gen Ipod). Is there something I'm not doing right?

Have you marked the tracks as 'Gapless' in iTunes?
You need to 'Get Info' on the tracks you want to play as gapless tracks and check off the "Gapless..." option.

  • A Variety of iTunes 7 and ipod 5g questions...

I've recently purchase a new 5g 80gb iPod. (replacing my 60gb photo). I installed iTunes 7 with a fresh installation of windows xp. Copied all my music back on to my new iPod without to much trouble. but....
    Registering:
It asks me to register my iPod every time i plug it in. When i log into my apple id, it brings up my addy info. I live in Canada and changed it to the correct country, but it won't recognize my postal code. No matter how i put it (with a space, without a space, capital letter, lowercase). The error i get is at the top is "The postal code you entered is not valid for [?]" It's not a huge thing, just annoying. So i registered my iPod through the apple website, and it still asks me to register. I've clicked "Never Register" and it still asks me... Annoying.
Sound Check (in iTunes, not the headphone check one on the iPod):
If sound check is on, does it alter the audio files in your library in anyway or does it just adjust the volume within iTunes? If sound check is on, does it anyway affect how the audio plays on your iPod? (ie automatically adjusting the volume) If i installed iTunes 6 with sound check, formatted my computer (my documents and my music are on a separate harddrive) installed iTunes 7 with sound check off, will the audio files somehow still have sound check on? (this question is answered if sound check doesn't alter the audio files) I don't normalize my audio when it's ripped b/c most normalizing programs cause the quieter tracks to be unproportionate to the other tracks. (more obvious in live recording when the crowd noice jumps from track to track). Since i've started using my new iPod, i notice that some tracks seem to have been normalized somehow and causing those effects like the crowd noice jump.
    Gapless:
With iTunes 7, the option to whether tracks are part of a gapless album is now available. Does this mean there's true gapless support for the iPod? This is feature number 1 on my iPod wishlist (and many others) and my iPod "why the f**k have they not done this yet?" I've tried playing around with a bunch of albums and tracks, and sometimes it feels like gapless and other times not at all. Goddamnit apple, WHY will you not release proper full support for gapless?!
    Album Art:
If you set iTunes 7 to automatically download album art, does it embed the image in the music files like when you add them manually? I copied an album to my roomates computer which had iTunes apply the artwork, but on my roomates computer, it showed up in iTunes without the album art.
    Volume 60gb 5G vs 80gb 5G:
My roommate bought the 60gb video last winter, and i've done a comparison with the same song and headphones, has anyone else notice or if this is true, but my roommates max volume is louder then my 80gb video. We though it might have been apples attempt to extend the battery life. Also that and the max vol limiter in the iPod settings might have something to do with the lawsuit. (this is all speculation on our part)
Thank you for the time and patiences. I'm your typical newb so if you have some links, faqs, whatever to point me in the right direction.
    - tcb

i'll have a go at this one:
    Registering:
It asks me to register my iPod every time i plug it in.
with that symptom, it's worth checking on this possibility:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • STOP "determining gapless playback info": how to get rid of it?

I have itunes 7 with macbookpro and 80 gigs of music on an external hard drive connected through USB to my Airpot Extreme 802.11n base.
I CANNOT USE itunes because it is endlessly "determining gapless playback info" (i'm using the French version who says "détermination des données de lecture sans intervalle")
though I DON'T NEED IT. This is the option that allow albums to play gapless... no such an improvement for a so slow process!
This morning it treated 200 songs in 5 hours... it has been one week i'm letting it work times to times but with this rhythm I still have to wait 350 hours = more than 15 days 24/24... without speaking of the extremely frequent cases when I have to "force to quit" and restard itunes.....
I CAN'T BEAR THAT ANYMORE... IS ALL THAT REALLY NECESSARY?
I cannot imagine this option cannot be unactivated... so please if someone can tell me how to get rid of this "determining gapless playback info" thing... I would be very happy...
    Many thanks for your answer!

I'm having the exact same issue. I have a 802.11n Airport Extreme that has my 100 GB music library connected to it via the USB port, and my iTunes (on my MacBook Pro) connects to it via the Airport Disk. Each time I add a batch of new songs to the library, it takes for ever for iTunes to resolve the gapless information. I just added 30 tracks, and it took about 10 to 15 minutes, during which iTunes was completely inaccessible with the spinning beach ball.
My theory is that to determine gapless information, iTunes has to load each track into memory to analyze it. That goes by quick if the libary is direct connected, but over the network that can be a pain (especially if the mp3s are large).
I really wish Apple would make this feature "toggle-able" on a future release of iTunes.

  • Does gapless playback relate to burned CD's as well?

Will the new gapless playback work when a playlist is burned onto a CD or is this just for iTunes play?

I'd like to add my own experience here ... I've had relatively few problems with iTunes 7, unlike many of the posters to these groups, so I don't know how many may find this useful.
Here's what I've learned about burning gapless CDs in iTunes 7:
First, a bit of background: I've never bought music from iTMS - all my music is from CDs. And, my preferred audio format is MP3/320kbps (call me fussy, but I can hear the difference
Now that I've upgraded to iTunes 7, music that I had ripped using iTunes v6 plays back "gaplessly" in iTunes 7. Burning these tracks back to CD, I get gapless audio CDs (Dark Side of the Moon as it was meant to be heard, thank you, Apple .
Music that I had previously ripped using a LAME encoder also plays back gaplessly in iTunes 7, too, but when I burn these tracks to a CD, there's still that *&^% gap, even when I set the "gap between songs" to none.
When I select the LAME-encoded tracks and select "Convert selection to MP3" from the "Advanced" menu (this recodes the LAME mp3s as iTunes mp3s), and burn the resulting tracks back to disc, the result is a gapless CD.
[[If you see a "Convert selection to AAC" or other non-MP3 menu item, go to iTunes preferences, click the advanced icon, and then click "Burning". The music format you have selected here is the one that appears on the "Convert selection to ..." menu item.]]
I have used this only with MP3s ... don't know how it would work with AACs or other formats.
credits: I've lost track of the original article, but the idea of reconverting MP3s in iTunes came from the author of that post. Thank you, whoever you are

  • ITunes library gone!  Can it be recovered?

Having spent most of last weekend sorting out my sons ipod - I now have a problem with mine!! Only a hour ago my library was there - and I just went back and it's gone! completely! No where to be found! Pligged in my ipod and system tells me that it's found new hardware!! Then itunes openas and says that this ipod it linked to another library (not so). Everything still on ipod - so in fear of lossing that too I unplugged ipod - searched and searched recycle bin etc and found nothing. Any suggestions? I have been searching the postings as I recall last week reading a similar problem but regret I cannot find it now - so I hope I don't offend anyone by repating a similar question. Many thanks. SM

Once I plug in my ipod will I be able to rebuild playlists?
Just want to be clear so I ddon't direct you the wrong way and have your library messed up more, but did you add the "xml" file by dragging to itunes and it loaded all your songs in without the playlist or did you add the actual music files/songs to itunes and don't have playlist?
Now - how do I back this up to prevent it happening again.
It depends on what you have handy to backup on, like an external harddrive or a CD/DVD burner (DVD is better since they hold more info than a CD you end up with less disc)
do you recommend updating to version 7
THis LARGLY depends on what you want. I mean theres ALOT of really cool neat handy features in 7. THat said tho SOME, NOT ALL BUT SOME people have issues with it. Usually long as your system and windows is up to date and you have things backed up and have scanned and removed malware/adware you should be OK.
I can only talk from experience, but for me I've not had any issues on my old 5-6 year old test machine. I can't say if you will have issues or not.
Again not all, but most posting here with issues about iTUnes 7 I have helped have one of these reasons why there having issues
    1) have not updated there system and windows.
    2) have malware "Fudging" things up
    3) was impatant with the "Gapless scan" itunes does on first setup, cancelled it or forced itunes to shut down and not have a fudged up system because they could not wait.
    4) Didn't have there antivirus disabled during install or didn't manually remove itunes and qwuicktime completely before the install (Yes apple doesn't say to do this but in some cases when I helped them clean out itunes and quicktime, then reinstall itunes 7, everything worked fine)

  • ITunes issues with 7.1 update

    Ok lets list them here.
iTunes will only display the store window, regardless of what I have selected in the side-bar. I could highlight 'library' or 'videos' and the display will still be the store.
    iTunes crashes every ten minutes
I can no longer preview music in the store
iTunes does a weird thing when resizing the window.
I cannot use the scroll bars anymore
Nor can I quit the application. I have to force-quit.
If I try to delete a playlist, iTunes crashes.

    To add to the list:
importing gapless cd --> itunes freeze --> system freeze
updating certain podcasts (ie Mad Money) --> itunes freeze.
I'm trying to downgrade to iTunes 6 (http://www.oldapps.com/downloadiTunesmac.php) but every time i try reinstalling either iTunes 6 or 7 it says there's nothing to install. Also Apple support asked me what gapless playback was. This is ridiculous.

  • Fix for Gapless Freeze

For the Gapless problem. iTunes does not like multiple libraries. This worked for me:
Delete the iTunes preferences in user library
    remove plugins
    Restart
When you launch iTunes, hold down option key to create a new library. Follow directions.
Gapless analysis follows. MIne went through with no problem instead of freezing up.
I had to locate songs that were not added to the new library in the first go around, and use "Add to Library" two times to add all my songs to the new library. I had multiple libraries in my old iTunes. I found this tip on Ted Landau's MacFixit.com

I'm glad it worked for you, but it's not working for me. I followed the steps you outlined, but once the iPod was plugged in, the message changed from "Waiting for iPod" to "More than one iPod is attached. Please attach one iPod at a time to be updated. Eject the other iPods using the Finder and then unplug them."
More than one iPod? I only wish!
The good thing is that if I unplug the iPod from my MacBook and reset it, it works fine. I just can't plug it in to recharge and or resync.

  • Hanging when "Determining Gapless Playback"

    Hi everyone,
I'm having a slight problem when my 80Gb is syncing with iTunes 7.0. When updating and "Determining Gapless Playback" iTunes will pause every hundred or so songs and tell me that the update is complete, but it hasn't worked it's way through all of the songs and the update symbol is still active next to the device icon. To remedy this I have to right click on the device icon and tell iTunes to sync. It starts up where it left off and stops again in about one hundred songs. This means I have to sit at my computer while it is updating. Any ideas for a fix besides reinstalling iTunes and having to recreate all of my playlists?
    Thanks in advance!
    Steve

I'm having the same issue on a gen 1 MacBook (2 GHz Intel, 2 GB of ram). I only have about 1000 songs in iTunes which are stored on an external drive that is connected to my Airport Extreme via USB. It's super super slow when determining the gapless playback info. Airport Disk Utility seems to be broken, it does not recognize any of my external disks. Finder however does see them and I can set it to automount in the login options for my user, which is cool. I haven't tried directly connecting the disk to the laptop to determine the gapless playback info. I will do that and post the results.

  • One track is not gapless

    Hello,
I am the owner of a new 30gb 5g iPod, refurbished. I have loaded appx 18gigs of tunes on it already. I am having trouble with one live album however. All tracks play gapless except the pause between tracks 4 & 5. This pause lasts about two seconds, and the resumes play at track 5. I am on iPod 1.2, and iTunes 7.0.2. The album has been checked as a gapless and compilation album in iTunes. iTunes plays the album just fine, but the iPod does not. All tracks should have audience applause in between them. When the pause occurs, the iPod shakes, I find it only shakes this much between these two tracks. I have re-synched the album as gapless and non-gapless through iTunes twice. No luck. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you.

  • Import songs without gap

How do I import songs from a CD to my iPod without any gaps between tracks.

    Nomad Drifter wrote:
Tried this, but all it does is join the tracks to make it a single track. However, the gap between songs still remains.
How can the gap remain if you are importing all the tracks on a CD as one singe track?
What CD are you trying to import into iTunes as gapless? iTunes automatically imports CDs that are meant to be gapless (Sgt Pepper, Dark Side Of The Moon etc), but some CDs (ones you have burnt yourself for instance) may not.
So, is the CD a store bought CD?

  • Importing from Live CDs

Does anyone know if there is any way to import music from a "live" CD the exact way the CD is recorded, without pauses/gaps between tracks?
    Thanks!
    Troc

Select all tracks you want to import from a CD and select 'Join CD Tracks' from the Advanced menu.
You will have one large track.
It's the only way to play 'gapless' as iTunes doesn't support gapless playback of separate tracks.
Joining tracks can only be done at import from a CD. You can't join tracks once the tracks are imported or added to the library.
