Gaps between letters in Text Style

Hello,
I have noticed that when I use a text style with the 'smart path following' option (Style Options - Path Labeling) I get irregular gaps between the text's letters (e.g. 'Mai n Stre et' instead of 'Main Street'). This happens with several fonts I have tried out, such as SansSerif, Calibri, Arial, Verdana and so on, but seems to get fixed with Monospaced.
Any ideas about the reason why and/or a fix?
Thanks in advance,
Panagiotis
PS: I am using Oracle Map Builder (ver. 11.1.1.0.0).

Hi,
There is a problem on code to label lines in these cases, which may result in these visual gaps. This labeling part has been reviewed and improved to avoid the gaps. It will be be available on the next patch.

    a gap between letters started to show in my indesign files. tried to undo with tracking, then with the paragraph settings. nothing helped. it ruins the fluent view of the document. how can i restore the program so that doesn't happen?
    for example: say i write a paragraph. then, in a weird some sort of way an involuntary gap suddenly appears between different letters of random words(i did not recognize any pattern to the gap appearing) throughout the entire paragraph. once i've double clicked on that paragraph, and made a minor change, lets say tapped a 'space' key, and then clicked ctrl+z to undo, it has aligned(or fixed) the entire paragraph and made it look ok again. i've tried numerous ways to undo the entire thing, but cannot find the reason. i've been working for a few years and there's no reason why this thing all of a sudden should happen right now.
    if anyone has stumbled on something like that and can advise, i would welcome it.

    yep...i'm typing with hebrew. i'll make a printscreen with the settings you've asked for@:
    if you look closely you'll see that almost every line has a single letter apart. in hebrew there is no usually a singe letter structured words.

  • How can i remove gaps between letters, usually occur in a paragraph justified with the last line aligned right/left

    here's an example of a paragraph i've taken from wikipedia:
    if you can see, in the paragraph aligned with the button "Justify with the last line aligned left" - the one above, i've marked with red lines the places in which a gap occurs all of a sudden, and i cannot undo them.
    for the same paragraph below i used the simple "Align left" button.
    can anyone please help me understand what has happened that made those gaps occur.
    i use Adobe Design Standard CS 6 Middle East Version. this bug occurs in other font/languages as well.

    Thank you for providing the sample IDML file.
    I still think it could be the used paragraph composer, maybe in conjunction with the used font. I'd change the composer to see, if the problem will go away.
    @Willi – you are right, the story direction is RTL, but the paragraph direction is LTR. That's no surprise here since the ME version of InDesign was used.
    I would change story direction to LTR, use the "normal" paragraph composer instead the global one.
    Since the used font is not available to me, a substituted font is not showing the problem.
    But that may mean nothing. I do not use the ME version of InDesign…

  • Firefox is displaying pages incorrectly, spreading portions of content horizontally, while the rest of the page is okay. E.g- Amazon's header is stretched, with spaces between letters & words. Google results headings spread. Wells Fargo has problems too.

    I am using Safari to send this question, as I am upset by in Firefox on many sites, where the horizontal spacing is busted. e.g.:
    My display is 1920x1200 but still not wide enough to show the whole site horizontally in these sites! In addition, the text is all over the place.
    At https://www.wellsfargo.com/biz/ for example, it is as if Firefox is not reading the css for the text, some of which is in narrow columns and some scattered!
    Amazon.com, -- the header at the top is so wide I have to scroll to see it and many of the words have huge gaps between letters. In the home page body, most of it is okay, but down the right some items have prices that look like this: $56. 3 8
    At Google, the linked heading of the results are stretched out horizontally.... not all, but on some searches it was prevalent.
    What on earth is going on? I think I am going to try to get back an earlier version from my backup and reinstall that for the meantime... this is really a drag.
    I put amazon in the url below, but note the examples above too.

    Thanks anyway, but neither of these suggestions applies to what is happening.
    The fonts on the websites I mentioned are not garbled and fonts on my machine are not corrupted.
    The characters on the pages in question are correct, just spaced too far apart or appearing in the wrong places, e.g. scattered around the page or scrunched up in narrow columns.
    In addition, portions of some web sites are enormously stretched horizontally, too, which leaves long horizontal gaps in between some words and characters.... and also makes it so that even my 1920x1200 monitor can't display, for example, the top header of Amazon.com without horizontal scrolling. Other portions of that page are a normal width, but I have to scroll way over to log in or find "view cart".
    It seems to me more like the css for those sites is not being read or interpreted correctly.
    Also, some sites appear normal, while others display these problems.
    Something like this is happening in Safari too, though, I have discovered. Hmmm.
    I should mention, too, that the sites look normal in an old version of Firefox I happen to have on an older Mac here, version 2.0.20. It's obsolete for some things, true, but it displays these problem sites perfectly.
    And the problem does NOT happen in Opera at all (latest version)!
    All the sites I gave as examples look completely normal in Opera!
    Hmmm. I will have to start browsing with Opera, it appears if I can't find the answer.... :-( I usually only use it to check pages I have designed.

  • Distance between letters

    How do I reduce distance between letters in text ? I think it is too big.

    You could do a web search about 'kerning' or 'tracking'.

  • [AS-CS5] Comparison between text style range and character style

    Hi,
    It's been a while since I'm not coming on this forum ...
    I'm looking to make a comparison between a "text style range" and a character style.
    I have no problems, except for the comparison of "fonts".
    myCurrentText = text for char…
    theStyle = character style id…
    I try:
           if (applied font of myCurrentText ≠ applied font of theStyle) then set theCharDifference to 1
    The selected text give me:
           font "Minion Pro        Italic" of application "Adobe InDesign CS5.5"
    and the character style:
           "Minion Pro"
    I try "set theTextFont to font of applied font of myCurrentText" -> Error
    This is my script (it's too long to post here) <http://db.tt/BLoGPiN>.
    Loot at the "on CheckCharacterDifference(myCurrentText, theStyle)"
    TIA.
    Oli.

    I've written this, but I do not know if it covers all cases ...
    Someone?
    Thanks.

  • Yes/No fields, single line. Long question in seperate text field. How to avoid gap between lines?

    I have made two single-choice fields side by side (Yes and No) on one single line. The question for the choices is long, so I wrote it in a separate text field placed above the Yes and No fields. If I use the Yes field for the question, the No field would end up too far to the right.
    Question ....
    [Single-choice text fields space]
    [  ] Yes
    [  ] No
    Problem now is there's too much space under the question, since the automatic text fields in the Yes and No fields are still there, though "invisible"/not used. How can I have a long question on a single line and have the Yes and No fields on the next line without a big gap between the two lines? Is it possible to delete the automatic text field in the Yes and No fields?
    Just realised that if one makes a single Yes field, and a single No field to the right, you are ("of course") able to mark both the fields, since they are not linked anymore as with two choices in one field. The point with the single choice fields is then lost; to be able to choose only either one. Yes or No.
    [X] Yes   [X] No

    The Single Choice is designed such that you have a single label and multiple choices, but the user can only select a single choice (in your case Yes or No).  If you like the choices to appear side by side you can deselect Stack Choices Vertically in the Field Properties widget.  You should also set the Label to Above.  See the attached image.

    <p align="left" class="events_boldRed" style="margin-top:0;"><span class="style1">Charlie Harper Trunk Show</span></p>
    Does that solve the gap between the header and the main content?
    While you're worrying about these gaps, read this -
    http://www.apptools.com/rants/spans.php
    I see trouble ahead....

  • DIV and p (Gaps between them).

    I'm sure that I'm missing something really obvious here:
    I've attached the CSS that I'm using (external).
    Using the WYSIWYG view, it's really hard to get it to do what
    I want; I seem to have to ensure that I have a space below where I
    want to put anything, check that the format is set to "none", then
    I can set "start" - & enter my information. Then I can click in
    the space, and do the same before entering the contents for "main".
    However, if Dreamweaver helpfully adds some paragraph tags,
    as it often does, it gives me a gap between "Start" & "main".
    I've also found that if I don't have a blank line after the
    bit that I'm trying to put in, then I end up with the insertion
    point being unable to get "past" the final div tag, so I end up
    with a div in a div, which isn't what I want.
    I can use the code view to tweak to what I want, but I can't
    help feeling that I'm missing something; either that the CSS is
    wrong - so I should be able to have two paragraphs in adjoining div
    touching each other, or something!
    I'd found
    http://archivist.incutio.com/viewlist/css-discuss/39227
    - which suggested using div > p - but even though I tried with a
    line-height of as low as 0.8 it didn't work, so I've obviously got
    the wrong end of the stick (wrong stick most likely!)
    Emma

    Emma,
    > I've worked it out! I don't *need* the div tags.
    That's right.
    > As long as I use p class = and then enter the text, I
    can
    > then get two different paragraphs to join & look
    like a
    > single body!
    As a matter of fact, you don't even need class="something".
    There are
    various kinds of CSS selectors. One of them is known as a
    class, which
    requires the class="" attribute in your HTML and a dot in
    front of the class
    name in your CSS.
    e.g.
    .discussMain = { properties here }
    Another kind is known as an element selector. That's where
    you simply
    use the name of an HTML element, such as p, as your selector.
    You don't
    need a dot, then, in your CSS for that rule.
    e.g.
    p { properties here }
    Keep in mind, if you use an element selector, *all* elements
    of that
    type will be affected. If you only wanted to affect a dozen
    <p> tags, but
    not all, you could either give each of them a class attribute
    and use a
    class selector, *or* you could wrap all those <p> tags
    in another tag --
    say, a <div> -- then apply your class to the
    <div>. This is partly what the
    "cascading" means in Cascading Style Sheets.
    <div class="something">
    <p>paragraph</p>
    <p>paragraph</p>
    <p>paragraph</p>
    </div>
    .something p {
    properties here
    In the above, the HTML shows a way to corral together a
    handful of <p>
    tags. The CSS references all <p> tags that exist inside
    any element whose
    class attribute equals "something".
    There are other ways to specify which parts of the HTML
    should be
    affected. See this Wikipedia entry for a good overview.

    Your construct is really "weird", try this:
    #nav,#content,#bottom{float:none}
    img{vertical-align:bottom}
    If that fixes your problem, then you can simply *remove* the
    float
    declarations from your sheet.
    As a side note, you should try to keep things as simple as
    possible. I'm
    sure you can safely remove "position:relative" from many
    rules. Also, there
    is no need to set a width on DIVs that are not floats (their
    natural
    behavior is to fill the the parent container).

  • Unwanted gaps between images in Internet Explorer

    I have sliced a image web page in Photoshop and exported it
    to .html and images. It looks perfect in IE7 and Firefox. Then
    brought it into Dreamweaver and deleted the large image in the
    content area and inserted a table into the content area. Now when I
    preview it in IE7 there is a gap between the top image and the two
    images on either side of the content area. Borders for all three
    images is set to zero as are cell padding etc. It displays
    correctly in Firefox and Dreamweaver but IE7 places a gap between
    the images. How do I remove the gap using HTML tables?

    >I have sliced a image web page in Photoshop and exported
    it to .html and
    > images.
    That's a bad start. The HTML written by graphics apps (and
    indeed by any
    'wizard') is fragile, and unsuitable for any use other than
    prototyping.
    > Now when I preview it in IE7 there is a gap between the
    top image
    > and the two images on either side of the content area.
    This is precisely the symptom of having used a graphics app
    to write your
    HTML. Why? You have changed the ground rules (i.e., the shape
    of the
    content) by deleting the large image and replacing it with a
    table. When a
    wizard writes your HTML, it writes it to EXACTLY reproduce
    the shape you
    have given it. Change that shape and you change the way the
    fragile code
    adapts - resulting in a breakage of your layout.
    The principal culprit is the use of col- and rowspans by
    these wizards -
    ... colspan="3">
    You can read more about this here -
    http://apptools.com/rants/spans.php
    The solution is to bite the bullet and learn enough HTML that
    you can create
    your own layouts without relying on a graphics app. Otherwise
    you will
    have this problem continuously.
    1. When I need to merge cells...
    a. If they are horizontally adjacent, instead of merging
    them, I end
    the current table, and 'stack' a new one underneath it with
    the desired cell
    configuration.
    b. If they are vertically adjacent, then I end the current
    table at the
    row ABOVE the row where the need for merging begins. I then
    start a new
    table with two cells in one row, and place a properly
    structured inner table
    in each of those two cells.
    2. When I need to split cells, I just insert a nested table
    with the proper
    cell configuration into the cell I would otherwise split.
    The goal here is to completely avoid merging or splitting
    cells (i.e., using
    col- or rowspan attributes in your table markup), since
    that's what makes
    Layout mode's tables (and any wizard's tables) so fragile.

  • Remove gaps between tables in dreamweaver CC

    I'm new to Dreamweaver so please be patient with me. I have created 2 stacked tables and for some reason there is a slight gap between them even though padding and spacing is set at 0. Can anyone let me know how to remove this gap.
    Thanks in advance

    I had never noticed it in the past until I started using the html5 doctype, hmm...
    One sec...
    I just tested a simple 2 column 2 row default table and tossed in an image with text and an image without text into two separate rows. The padding is not there in HTML4 Trans or XHTML Trans (which is what I used in the past most often). It only shows up on the image that is added with text for those two doctypes. When I convert it to html5, it shows up for both, here test this code and see if I'm crazy (preview the below, then change the doctype to html5 and preview again, the descender padding on the bottom image is not present in XHTML or html4 and pops up in html5)...
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en-us" lang="en-us">

        border:none;
        margin:0px;
        padding:0px;
        border-collapse:collapse;
    </style>
    </head>
    <body>
    <table width="200" border="1">

        <tr>
          <td> </td>

  • How do I remove a gap between table rows in InDesign?

    I need help in figuring out how to remove gaps between table rows.  I have tried Table Spacing under Table Set-up, but it doesn't work.
    Here's what I'm working on:
    As you can see there are gaps above the first row and below last row under the header Business Management Technology.  I cannot select that gap.  How do I remove it, so that the first class, 31058, is flush with the black header?  (and the last class, 32675, is flush with the Chemistry header?)
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sarah

    I hadn't considered that, and your example is proof-of-concept. However, now that you made me look closer, I still don't think that's the OP's case, seeing as the text in the OP's header rows appears to span more than one column, belying what I suppose must be merged cells.* The column strokes in the "gap" appear to disqualify it (the gap) as part of a row with merged cells.
    *There is still another possibility that someone "made pictures" of tables with merged cells by overlaying text frames to make the header rows. I've run across all kinds of such "carpentry;" especially when the file may have originated at the desk of someone who avoids or resists use of tables. They find ways to fake them and/or their features.

    If I select the text layer and click the text style button in the library it just creates a new text style for Myriad Pro 12pt - I'm not using that anywhere in my document.
    Can anyone help? Seems like a bug to me as I'm trying what the video tutorials are saying.

    I realize AI is an illustration program.
    Do you realize it is an object-based vector-based program? Do you know the difference between raster-based and vector-based content?
    My question seems to be all over the forum but no one has been able to answer other than exporting to these file formats, which make text look awful and of no use....
    And yet everyone else in the world makes proper web images every day using a plethora of programs, including these...go figure.
    Am I missing something?
    Yep. Pretty much.
    Hello Adobe! People use transparency on website logos.
    Hello, cocteau! What you're calling "transparency" is inherent to object-based vector artwork. But web browsers don't support object-based vector artwork, except via file formats like Flash and SVG, or by viewing as a PDF in a plug-in version of Reader. Raster imaging in general only supports "transparency" by either indexing a specific color (i.e.; "don't display this color", as in GIF) or including an alpha channel (i.e.; "blend all the pixels with existing pixels, based on values from this extra channel", as in PNG). It's all in the raster file format you use, cocteau; it has little-to-nothing to do specifically with Adobe software. Such things are among the most basic matters understood by someone doing web design.
    When I export an eps from .ai file, and open the eps in photoshop,...I save as a gif for the web, it goes back to the original problem...creates jagged text. I"m giving up on this garbage...Thanks a lot adobe! Lower the price of this software if this is all that can be done.
    Once it leaves Photoshop (or Illustrator, or whatever) as a non-proprietary raster image format, it's all about what the format can do re "transparency". You can do this stuff with most any graphics program. You should read about basic web design and the differences between raster and vector content, rather than rant.
