Garage Band : M Audio Duo USB Midi... signal in yes, audio out no

Dug my M Audio Duo USB Midi out of the closet and trying to lay some tracks in Garage Band, but problems. I could use a hand. When attempting to record...
- OK: Garage Band recognizes the device and I'm able to 'seemingly' record audio (from external mic via midi device)
- NOT OK: I'm not able to 'monitor' via line out through Mac - headphones plugged into Mac (line out through midi is okay, but only picks up native signals, not tracks from Garage Band)
- NOT OK: Also, replaying the track doesn't produce ANY sound (despite the track showing a signal)
Any ideas? Is M Audio Duo compatible - it's pretty old piece of hardware.
Cheers!

First you are not using MIDI you are recording Audio that has been digitized.
If you can't hear the playback through the interface make sure you choose the interface as your output device in garageband preferences and you have the mix knob on the interface set to the playback/return side.
I just looked at the interface and it doesn't seem to have any mix knob try toggling the stand alone mode button.

  • Garage band (2.0.2) and MIDI - weird sound problems

hi, i have just bought a new keyboard (Yamaha PSR 450), as well as a USB-to-MIDI cable, to connect my keyboard to my mac, for garage band. the cable is "m-audio midisport UNO" (MIDI IN/MIDI OUT-to-USB).
when i connect my keyboard to my mac, open up garage band and try to play or record and play, the sounds coming out of garage band are weird. the track was the default software track (piano), but when i played, only about 30% of what i played came out right, the rest was either this (very) high-pitched piano sound or nothing at all, and at random intervals too, e.g. i press 'middle c', and no sound comes out my computer, i press it again, this time it plays, but high-pitched. i press it again, now it plays right etc. etc. there doesn't seem to be any pattern. also, most of the time when it actually played the 'middle c', once i let go, the sound continued for ages, like i had a huge sustain on or something.
what's more weird is, if i have a recording on my keyboard (it has 6 tracks) and press play, the sound comes out perfect on garage band, so it's just when i play "live".
I've been messing around with settings on both my keyboard and mac, but nothing seems to work.
i read in the Yamaha manual that if the USB - MIDI cable is longer than 15ft, there can be "noise and data errors". this sounds exactly like what im getting, but the cable is not 15ft. its about 7-8ft. maybe the cable is low-quality? it cost me £32! -_-
any info or help would be extremely appreciated.
    thanks
    peace

    hey, thanks.
i downloaded the latest driver, but it still has the same problems.
maybe my MIDI setup is wrong.
when i open my MIDI setup panel in the utilities folder, it has:
IAC Driver (don't know what this is, can't really change anything anyway)
Network (again, i don't know what this is for, i havent touched anything)
USB Uno MIDI Interface. i can't change any info on this either, but i clicked it and then pressed "Test Setup" and this short continous bleep noise went off, untill i clicked "Test Setup" again to turn it off. im guessing this means it's working?
i even double checked that the MIDI IN/OUT plugs were in the right sockets in my keyboard!
either garage band doesn't properly support my keyboard or the cable
    or
the cable is low-quality and i need to get the recomended yamaha one.
i cant think of anything else that could be wrong. of course i know next to nothing about MIDI so there may be loads of things i have not figured out yet.
are there any free/demo MIDI music software for mac i could download to test it?
    thanks for helping
    peace

  • Can garage band be used with usb turntable to transfer lp's to digital?

i have a number of lp's that i want to transfer to my mac, is garage band capable of doing that or do i need other software? input appreciated, thanks
    17 G4 Powerbook - macmini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You can do that with Garageband, but I wouldn't say it's the best software to do that. It will not split the cuts into the individual songs, and so unless you record one song at a time, each side of the LP will end up as one long cut. Then you will have to export each individual section to end up with songs. But if you already have GB and the USB turntable, you might just try it and see how it works. I have Peak and that works better for this type of thing.

  • Delays w garage band live with external USB mike

I'm using  an external USB mike into a Macbook pro with garage band running as recommended with monitor on. (Mac's earphone port  cabled to input of a Marley  "Get together") After  anywhere between 7-15 minutes a delay occurs. When initially investigating this set-up, I did notice someone dealing with such delays. Could someone please put me to rights? Bern

It will be a little clearer. Play around with the mic position to see if you can minimize the background sound. I believe the six "ticks" you heard were the count-in. You can turn that off via the Control menu.

  • USB MIDI devices not detected (3 out of 4)

Leopard's Audio Midi Configuration doesn't detect the Korg microKontrol, Novation Remote Zero SL and Evolution MK-249C2 MIDI keyboard. Firewire MIDI device is detected (RME fireface 800).
Using the "latest" drivers - Novation Automap Universal 2.0.1178 driver, microKontrol driver is pre-Leopard, Evolution keyboard doesn't need a driver.

    USB Hub was faulty!

  • USB MIDI CONTROLLER- LOGIC PRO 7- I CAN SEE THE LIGHTS BUT NO SOUND OUT?

I just got logic pro 7.2 so i am very green, garage band automatically recognizes the usb midi controller and i can hear it,
in logic it recognizes it i can see the lights for sound levels but no sound is coming out, ive been trying to figure this out.

Heck, if loneliness is your thing... more power to ya!
now why cant i hear the midi
MIDI doesn't make a sound. You either need to assign a software instument to it or use an external device, all depending on the track you chose. If you, perhaps elaborate a little more as to what you did (typing with your caps lock released), there's a better chance of getting your problem solved. If you're hearing your recorded guitar, then there's a chance you selected the wrong type of track to record to as far as MIDI tracks go (there is a difference in Logic).

  • Audio Output Corruption when using USB MIDI keyboard controller

recently, i'm getting intermittent corrupted audio output (short blips of distortion) while playing through my usb midi keyboard. i thought maybe some data got corrupted on the disk over time so i wiped the drive, reinstalled osx, installed all updates, hooked up usb keyboard and all worked fine. today, i plugged in the keyboard and the distortions have reappeared. i unplugged the keyboard and played with the Musical Typing- still distorted. i rebooted and tried Musical Typing- still distorted. I removed the usb midi keyboard device from Audio MIDI Setup, rebooted, and the distortions have disappeared when using Musical Typing. Connecting the keyboard causes the distortions to reappear. I'm at a loss.
    Any ideas?
    environment:
    macbook pro
    osx 10.4.11
    gb 4.1.2
    studiologic vmk188 plus

    UPDATE:
I decided to try going through an Firewire Audio Interface instead. Keyboard-(MIDI)->MOTU Traveler-(Firewire)->MacBook Pro.
    Same corruption/hiccups/choppy playback.

  • Garage Band = ever since update, CRASH when I select SNOWFLAKE mic! Ideas?

I have done a repair permissions (nothing wrong)...
But ever since installing the iLife update, when I start garage band with mic connected, it says SYSTEM SETTINGS for AUDIO IN and OUT, if I choose Snowflake, I get the spinning ball, then crash, no matter what.
I disconnected my high end firewire audio interface, I uninstalled iHear, and all that's left is snow flake and the soundflower driver for iSHOWU as well as Macbook Pro mic / speakers.
If I boot to external 10.5.2 it's fine.
I have the problem with 10.5.4 and the latest update. Not sure if LOGIC is going to give me a problem or not. I have a feeling with all the snafu's and fun stuff of mobile me and new updates (what was I thinking) that somehow this messed up the system.
Is there a way to uninstall the update? What would happen if I moved GARAGE BAND PREFERENCES, PROGRAM, APPLICATION support from 10.5.2 folders to 10.5.4 folders? Remeber the days when you could just drag something to the trash and that would solve the problem?
Anyway, was just getting ready to really make 10.5.4 the NEW home, now I am not so sure as another snafu that shows up every once in a while is when I launch ADOBE it always says the program was moved and I have to repair, I never had to do that.
Anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong?
I really want to solve this and have no idea on how to do this.
Macbook Pro 10.5.4, 2GB RAM, Santa Rosa 256MB GPU,
    Thank you..

    WOW.
I have the same problem. I have a USB mic and ever since iLife update whenever I plug it in, and then choose in preference, GB crashes. Wonder if anyone knows or is GB not PRo enough that the users are mostly consumers and non tech and non pro users? I would think its pretty big as I know a full time FOLEY dude and while he uses PT he loves GB (logic more) but still like GB and I think GB is like KING of Podcasting. Is there something maybe we can try to pod cast instead of GB?
I need help to as there us no undo in system install updates except TIME MACHINE which I think I really need to look into now, especially after having problems like this.
Surely someone must know what to do, try, explore?
    Thank you

  • USB MIDI Controller no longer working after Logic 8 upgrade

Hello, my M-Audio O2 USB MIDI Controller worked brilliantly with Logic Pro 7 after simply plugging it in. I never needed to install any drivers or do any setup. Now, after upgrading to Logic Pro 8 it isn't recognized and does not work. Does anyone know what's going on and can anyone please give me some advice on how to fix this problem? Thanks

Go to Logic-Pro beside the Apple Logo at the top of your screen to the Left,
    then Preference,
    then scroll to Control-Surface settings,
    now select set-up
From there delete and then reinstall your control-Surface, do it manually as the Scan doesn't work all the time,

  • Problems connecting Yamaha P-90 to GB08/Leopard via M-Audio Uno USB

I am able to connect my Yamaha P-90 to my old G4 Powerbook running 10.3.9 using an M-Audio Uno USB MIDI interface. GB correctly detects that a new MIDI device has been added. I have just bought an 20" iMac with Leopard, but it cannot detect the MIDI device when I plug it in. The Yamaha and the interface clearly work, so I assume there must be an issue in Leopard. Do I need to install any specific drivers to make this work? I don't remember having to do this with the old machine, although admittedly it was a while ago.
I've read numerous posts bemoaning the issues that seem to surround trying to connect Yamaha to Apple via USB. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks, Guy

I just found this on the M-Audio website:

  • Mainstage2/air/m-audio fastrack usb/guitar no input

I just bought MainStage 2 and downloaded to my Macbook Air (13 in) running OSX 10.7.2. Connected my guitar via m-audio fastrack usb and selected the m-audio interface for both sound input and output in system prefs. In mainstage I also made sure to select the fastrack device for input and output. Yet, when I played the guitar no input was recognized in mainstage. I could hear the raw guitar (a Taylor T5) through the earphones I had connected to the m-audio device, but nothing was making it to the computer. Same problem in garageband. I tried another guitar too, but same result. I also made sure to install the most recent m-audio fast track usb drivers.
Any ideas? I know I've gotten the fastrack to work with garageband before with no problem (on an iMac with an older OS). I'm wondering if the problem is something about the air?
Thanks for any help. I'm doing a live gig in a few weeks and hope to be able to use mainstage for it.
    Bob

No sound coming out of what? Your Mac speakers, fast track connected headphone/speakers or no signal getting to garageband?

  • ALERT: Do not use Ae or Pr with Garage Band open!

This was driving me insane all week.
I was creating scores with Garage Band.
And Pr and Ae were playing back audio & timelines AT THE WRONG SPEED.
As I was on the phone with tech support, I realized this was caused by Garage Band being open!
As soon as I quit it, CC went back to normal.
Anyone who uses GB -- let's please file bug reports.

I remember having similar issues setting up audio workstation DAW's for Slave/ReWire. Sounds like GarageBand took control of your Audio Card and set it to a different "Sample Rate" which would speed or slow the audio being used in other apps.
Sounds like you'll have to use GB either before or after Ae/Pr to prevent this... or figure a way to set your sample rates to match.
