Garageband 10.0.1 and Snap to Grid

Hello again Garageband Gurus,
While working on the new Garageband 10.0.1, I noticed that when I change the time intervals from "Beats & Project" to "Time" that snap to grid is greyed out.  Does anyone know how to to get snap to grid to work while using the setting "Time"?
Thank you,
Rory
PS - Also if there is a shortcut key to go from "Beats & Project" to "Time" that would be incredible?

I think you already said this, but what I do is drag it from my desktop (or wherever it may be), into the track. Once it's on the track I open up the "Musical Typing" and then drag it from the track onto the key. I'm also having an issue with the legacy instruments. I wiped my Mac and reinstalled Mavericks along with Garageband and all the iLife stuff from the App store and now I no longer have legacy instruments even after restoring my $4.99 purchase. I won't use GB until I get the legacy stuff back.

  • Illustrator CC will not snap to grid, no matter what!

    Hello,
I apologize if this seems a redundant post, I've read many people asking this but have seen no definitive answer, so I wanted to simplify the question and see if we can get a real answer:
I'm using Illustrator CC, and snap to grid DOES NOT WORK FOR ANYTHING. For instance, if I try to draw out a rectangle, the top left corner will not snap to the nearest grid where I start to drag it out. For another instance, if I use the pen tool, it WILL NOT snap to grid. To be clear, I have "snap to grid" checked under the view menu, and do not have "snap to point" or "smart guides" turned on. Alternatively, any combination of these being on/off still will not yield a snap to grid. I have also experimented with the "align new objects to pixel grid" under the "transform" window on and off, which did not help either. Even with that checked on, existing objects will not snap to the grid. In short, nothing snaps to the grid - this is occurring on 2 different computers, one at home, one at work, both running the same version of illy CC. I don't get it, it seems like there are a lot of people having this problem but I cannot for the life of me find an answer, it seems like a life-or-death option that should be available, I know that I am lost without it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
As a caveat to this, I have tried most every option under preferences, so unless you know of something hiding deep, I doubt that changing a preference is going to be the solution here. Thanks all!

    Thanks Larry,
I have seen this posted as a solution, but to be clear it is not just a matter of rectangles not snapping, NOTHING will snap to the grid. Not a rectangle, not an existing object, not the pen tool, nothing. Even if I create a rectangle and go through the steps of expanding it to get rid of this new "live" feature, it still will not snap. So, I'm afraid that rectangles are not the culprit here, and I know from reading the forums that others are having the same issue with snap to grid simply not working at all.

  • How do you disable snap to grid?

This featured was listed as being added with the update to version 1.4, but I cannot find how to turn it off.  I have looked all through the app, and the separate Settings app, but I haven't been able to find the option anywhere or any updated documentation that describes where the option is.  Does anyone know where it is; maybe I am overlooking something obvious.  Thanks.

This is the label that will be displayed in the TImeline once you are zoomed in all the way to indicate the new snap status. BTW affects also the manually moving of the Playhead.
This is the article on Apple's website that explains the details
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5670?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
To turn off "Snap to Grid," pinch-zoom to the maximum level in Tracks view or when editing notes in regions. Pinch-zoom again and "Snap to Grid off" will appear on top of the Tracks area.To turn "Snap to Grid" back on, pinch-zoom out.
    Hope that helps

  • Garageband, snap to grid and editing with precision

I'm *this* close to buying an iPad mini. The main reason is that I run a podcast and like the idea of editing it during my daily commute. I usually create the podcast with Garageband on my Mac, so was thinking Garageband on iPad would be the obvious app.
BUT when I tested it out today on a store iPad I could not figure out a way to turn of "snap to grid" when editing audio, which means that it's impossible to make precise edits to speech - you can't just cut and join wherever you like, only at 1/16-beat (or whatever) intervals.
I'm hoping that someone here who uses their iPad for audio editing will either tell me that 1.) I'm wrong, and you can in fact turn of the grid-snapping and edit audio with precision, or 2.) there's a different app for iPad that can edit audio with precision, ideally a multitrack editor. Double bonus points if the finished multitrack can be fine-tuned on a Mac later.
    Anyone?

I wasn't able to find clean up by right clicking, but on the finder menu in view, clean up is present and it works. Problem fixed.
    Thanks a lot galantesteve!

  • How do you remove snap to grid in Garageband 10.0.2? I can't find it anywhere.

Basically in older versions of Garageband, there used to be a setting under Control >> Snap to Grid and you could toggle it on and off. In this new version, I found that a lot of different, basic things that I knew how to do are no longer there, or are way harder to do. Snap to grid is one of those things, and I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know how to turn off snap to grid?

Choose Edit > Snap to Grid from the "Edit" menu.
The "Snap to grid" option is not always visible. I am seeing it only, when a software instrument track is selected, the track editor window is open for that track, and  a region in the track is selected.

  • I am trying to organize a zip file with a bunch of links and files. But when I drag an image file to a folder, it always "Snaps to grid" instead of just landing where I put it.

I am trying to organize a zip file with a bunch of links and files. But when I drag an image file to a folder, it always "Snaps to grid" instead of just landing where I put it. All of the files are going into the same zip file but I want them visually in the space that I put them and not at the bottom of the snap to grid folder location they are looking like.  I am trying to  drag and drop files in groups so that I can group them for now, but image files always do their own "sort by" when I drag them from my web pages. Links don't do it though.  I tried resetting the folder, and deleting the DS files. No luck.

  • How to make my own grid and perform a "snap to grid" effect?

Hi! I am a newbie in flash and I am trying to create a puzzle like game (a chinese puzzle game called tangram). I am wondering what kind of functions should I use to create a "triangular" grid i.e. something similar to this ? http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/2259/triangulargrid.jpg. What should I do to make the movie clips to perform the "snap to grid" effect to this grid?I have tried to draw my own grid and used the "cacheAsBitmap" function to implent it, however it doesnt seems to be working. Is there any suggestions or tutorials to this problem? Thank you very much.

Well, the project you are taking is not a simple one. It requires quite an experience with AS3. It is not a few lines of code but an understanding of Flash display list model and how objects can interact. In addition, there is no a single solution but rather wide array of possible approaches depending on use case.
To illustrate, the code below draws a mesh that replicates the image in your first post. Do you think that this is enough from the standpoint of your AS3 knowledge to get you started?
    This code needs Flash 10:
    var side:Number = 400;
    var s:Sprite = new Sprite();
    var g:Graphics = s.graphics;
    g.lineStyle(3);
    //g.beginFill(0xFF8000);
    g.drawTriangles(
         Vector.<Number>([     0, 0, side * .5, 0, side, 0,
         side * .25, side * .25, side * .75, side * .25,
         0, side * .5, side * .5, side * .5, side, side * .5,
         side * .25, side * .75, side * .75, side * .75,
0, side, side * .5, side, side, side
         Vector.<int>([
              0, 1, 3,
              1, 2, 4,
              0, 3, 5,
              1, 3, 6,
              5, 3, 6,
              1, 2, 4,
              1, 4, 6,
              2, 4, 7,
              6, 4, 7,
              5, 6, 8,
              5, 8, 10,
              6, 8, 11,
              10, 8, 11,
              6, 7, 9,

Where are you talking about the Desktop?
I don't see where it is possible to set both Snap to Grid and By Kind they seem to be mutually exclusive.
    And then
If I have Snap to grid set I get the behavior you describe. If I have By Kind set the icons stay together and close up the space from the deleted icon.

  • CS6 and CC constantly snapping to grid

I'm not sure if its a grid problem as I've turned off every snap to grid function..but I will have a drawing like the one below where i turned off all snapping, everything is aligned and pretty...as soon as I use the pathfinder tool all the shapes go wonky. See images below.
Step 1) turn off all snapping
Step 2) draw shape and align. Notice in my transform panel when i highlight the shapes align to pixel grid is still unchecked
Step 3) pathfinder divide tool before
Step 4) shape/drawing after i hit divide. notice the shapes are dvided but some are not mis-aligned and the align to pixel grid is now checked in my transform panel. Unchecking it does nothing to help the drawing...
illustrator didnt always use to do this! I am sad and frustrated that it doesm someone tell me what I'm doing wrong please =).

I tried in my photos above to turn off align to pixel grid in the transform panel...but what i did not try was the flyout options menu of the transform panel! I turned off align new objects to pixel grid, OFF because it was set to on which is why when I divided the shape it misaligned because all of those divided shapes were considered new now..Thank you so much Jacob! Its silly that the align to new pixel grid is not in the view menu drop down of illustrator with the rest of the options...
Here is a picture after I turned it off and successfully divided the shape. Thanks again

  • Photoshop CS6 Snap to Grid not working.

    Hey everyone,
I recently acquired Photoshop and wanted to try my hand at some pixel art, but I can't get the snap to grid to work.
The pixel grid works fine - which is great, when I'm making something tiny, but I am trying to draw with a 5 size pixel, and my grid won't work.
The brush still snaps to the pixel grid - and I have no idea how to change the preferences for the pixel grid, slash turn it off, slash anything.
I tried turning off the 'Snap to vector and pixel grid' in the preferences menu, but it is still snapping to the pixel grid.
    Please advise?

New to GarageBand 3, the ability to work without the snap to grid. Now the snap to grid feature only works if the song position read out is set to musical time. (see the little icon of the note and the icon of the clock next to the song position info in the main control bar.)
Switch to musical time to get the snap to grid to work.
If this is already set, then something else is wrong.

  • How to snap to grid lines in Logic Pro 9?

In Garageband there's an option to "snap to grid lines" which means that when you click on the grid it will automatically snap the playhead to one of the lines, so it's always on a perfects beat. Does this option exist in Logic Pro 9? How do I turn it on? Thanks!

Left Click and Hold on the Ruler Bar and then move your pointer left or right and it will snap to the Bar
Or.. even simpler is to use the comma and period keys on your keyboard to move the playhead forwards and backwards by exactly one bar, snapping to the bar.

  • How do you turn off snap to grid in Logic Pro x

    Hi
How do you turn off snap to grid as in garageband .....it was quite simple...
But I don't seem to get to grips with this in logic ....
I have options of smart ...and so on ....
I want to be able to move eg an imported audio file to start wherever I want so not to snap to the nearest beat or bar...
    Anyone know??
    Thanks

Technically you cannot turn it off, but you can choose a very fine resolution which in effect boils down to having it off: ticks. For accurately lining up audio you can use Samples (the smallest snap value, probably equates to GB's off setting?).
I have F5 to F8 assigned to snap values bar, beat, division and tick. Very handy.
The Frames values obviously come in handy when working to video, though there's no law agaist using it without video.
Note that they are ordered from big to smallest.

  • Pen tool: handles snapping to grid not functioning

Since it was not answered by the Adobe Illustrator CC staff, I'll ask again:
I use the handles snapping to grid functionality extensively when creating icons and other detail-intensive shapes. How do I re-enable this feature, or is it necessary to revert to an older, more functional version of Illustrator?
This is very frustrating, such a simple feature and, for no logical reason, it has been removed from Illustrator. Makes me regret updating and paying for Illustrator CC.

there was a discussion on this when the feature was first removed. did you see it? I think a support staff member posted in it, but nothing positive...
edit: yeah, it was just people complaining and the staff guy stating that this was indeed the case.

  • Why doesn't the desktop 'snap to grid' work with Snow Leopard?

I've recently upgraded my OS to Snow Leopard and I do a lot of work with photo folders which I keep organized on my desktop. Since upgrading the 'snap to grid' function in the view options of the desktop preferences has stopped working. For some reason the folders and files on the desktop keep snapping off the screen or on top of each other so that I cannot find them easily. I've had to turn off the 'snap to grid' and the desktop no longer looks organized and is not easy to navigate. Why is this happening? AND, how do I fix it? It seems to me the snap to grid shouldn't have gone out the window with an upgraded OS. I'm very organized and borderline OCD so this is FRUSTRATING me to no end!!!
    Anyone have any ideas?

It's working for me in 10.6. Try moving this file in your Home Folder/Library to the trash -- don't empty it yet.
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
When finished go back to the Desktop>View Options and select Snap to grid.
If that doesn't do it, open Terminal in utilities and copy/paste this command, then hit return. Don't attempt to type it in by hand. If you make a typo or get the spaces wrong, there could be a disaster. When finished go back to the Desktop>View Options and select Snap to grid.
    rm ~/Desktop/.DS_Store

  • Is there a way to see if "snap to grid is on"...without going to the menu?

I have been working on tutorials and many of them require turning "snap to grid" on and off many times throughout the illustration creation process. I am easily using the keyboard shortcuts. But often I forget if it is toggled on or off. As of now I have to go to the top drop down menu and see if it is checked or not. Is there some reference in the main work area that shows the status of this feature (on or off)? It seems so awkward going to the menu dropdown each time to see this.
    ~Thanks

not that I know of, but you can cheat by creating a square that turns green when Snap is on and it turns Red if Snap is off
    1. create a square
    2. give it a note, "SNAP" for example
    3. record an action to turn Snap to grid On and change the square to green, give it a shortcut, "F2" for example
    4. duplicate the action and edit it to change the square to Red, give it a shortcut, "F3" for example
that's it, if you need help with actions, feel free to ask.
