  • Trouble with 3rd party VST installs for Garageband, can't find instruments

    Hi,
I am having trouble with Audio Units for Garageband when installing 3rd party software, VSTs, loops, instruments. I have more issues with Logic Pro. I am hoping that it is the same underlying issue and that I am just missing something. I have the manuals (not great for troubleshooting). I am confused with some installs use User Library and others use the Computer Library. I do go to the mfgs sites for updates. The installs sometimes work as standalones but I don't see ALL of the components of the software in say Garageband or Logic. Mostly, I am missing the "instruments" and "loops" that I want to access within the DAW. Some examples:
    • Here is some of the software I am talking about:  East West sample libraries (Play and Native Instruments); Vienna Symphonic librarires; Sylenth1 (just last night); Sample Tank 2 and Total Workstation 2 from IK Multimedia and others.
    • In GB I see the Audio Units for Vienna, Play, Sylenth, some of the IK Multimedia but NOT any instruments when I go to the "Sound Generator" -- I seem to be missing the instruments and loops. I see less AUs in Logic Pro. Some of these are VST instruments.
    • Can I just drag-drop samples to the library folders to fix this?
    • The plug-ins do not seem to work (though Sylenth1 worked for a single sound). When there is a standalone app (as in Sample Tank), I finally got the "sounds" to be reinstalled and loaded, those sounds/samples don't show up in any DAW.
    • When and if the sounds/loops/samples show up in GB's "Instruments" section will I be able to tell that they belong to that particular software or library?
    Thanks in advance.
    John

Found the answer myself, it was simple:
    • Select the Track
    • Show the Instrument (info area)
    • Click on Edit
    • Click on the "Sound Generator" pop up field.
    • At the bottom of the pop-up list, select from the Audio Units that you have installed. This is where you see "Sample Tank 2, Vienna Instruments..."
    • NEXT -- IMPORTANT:   CLICK ON THE PICTURE next to the Sound Generator pop-up field. The AU unit loads up, the interface pops up, you load up the instruments in this AU Unit. You do NOT see the sounds from the AU unit in the normal Apple instrument list.
This was not intuitive but once you know it, fairly simple.
Still, the devil is in the details -- more questions on the way.

  • Garageband skipping "record real instrument" section

    Hey everybody,
I'm having a little problem that is driving me insane!! When I open garageband, I want to record a real instrument, but when I go to the create new playlist section, it goes straight to the saving options menu. It didn't do this before and I barely used it. I want it back the way it was!!!!
Please, can someone help me get to the record real instrument menu??

When I open garageband, I want to record a real instrument, but when I go to the create new playlist section, it goes straight to the saving options menu.
I assume you are talking about the "Create new music project" button - and when you click this, GB asks you to name the project and save it somewhere. It has always done this, GB doesn't allow for working with unsaved "Untitled" documents (which is sometimes a pain, like when you want to just check some feature to answer a forum question).

  • Garageband requests reinstallation of instruments library

    Hi everyone,
don't know what happened, but today my garageband application gave a failure notice, that said that the instrument's library was invalid. I tried to reinstall from backup - the garageband software as well as the library. Garage Band can be started, but every time I try to add a new track - e.g. for voice - nothing happens. Please, help!

    I've found the answer.
In the Logic Pro menu drop down there is a Download Additional Content option.
Got to download these things, apparently.
    Thanks here anyway.

  • Is there a way to import cakewalk INS definitions into garageband?

I have an Alesis QSR sound module, and want to import the sounds into garageband. I don't really know anything about midi, apart from hooking up a controller when I play out. I can download the instrument definitions as an INS file for cakewalk, but don't know how to import that into garageband, or if this is even supported. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi Patrick,
I am addressing the similar issue. "Getting data from huge XMLs into Hana."
Using Odata services can we handle huge data (i.e create schema/load into Hana) On-the-fly ?
    In my scenario,
I get a folder of different complex XML files which are to be loaded into Hana database.
Then I gotta transform & cleanse the data.
Can I use oData services to transform and cleanse the data ?
If so, how can I create oData services dynamically ?
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Real Instruments Feedback Garageband 08

I bought ilife 08. I usually use Protools to record with my Mbox but I wanted to screw around with Garageband. I can not for the life of me get real instruments to work. When it records all i get is a feedback loop from the moment I hit the record button... instrument plugged in or not.
But let me back up a bit. I was messing around with Garageband loops and they were all distorted. I wanted to monitor through my Mbox so I checked Preferences in Garageband and also in the OS and sure enough one of them was set to line output or something. Switched that and loops and software instruments worked fine. No distortion.
So all input output prefs are set to use the Mbox. I open Garageband.. choose real instruments. Plug my ukulele into source 1 on my Mbox and select instrument. I can hear it monitoring through my headphones but I hit record the wave file shows straight feedback. I stop recording and go back and listen to it. Just feedback.
I mess around with the input controls again. It will record fine if i use the built in microphone. I decide maybe it is the pick up in the Uke. Try plugging in my guitar. Same thing. Decide to use my Neuman microphone. Select mic... turn on phantom power. Same thing. Feedback.
I thought.. maybe my Mbox is messed up. I go to open Protools now and it won't even open. I'm assuming it didn't like something Garageband installed... and now i can't find my Protools install disk. Grrrr.
Maybe i need a driver update for the Mbox? I don't even know where to begin with that one... I did a google search and found I could check settings in the Digi Core Audio Manager and now it pops up every time I open Garageband regardless of setting it not to in the prefs... But that is another story. Also messing with that did not help.
What in the world am I doing wrong? I feel like there is probably something really simple i am overlooking. I am going to take my Mbox to my friends place tomorrow and plug it into his Mac and see how it goes. In the meantime is there anything obvious I am overlooking? I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to techy stuff but this is making me feel like a real idiot.
I appreciate any assistance. Please be kind if the answer is obvious and I am just a dumb-dumb. I have a fragile ego. haha.

    Hi!
    Start with this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93725
Is it maybe because your Mbox have sample rate set other than 44.1 khz? If so, bring it back to 44.1 khz.
Also, GB set a real instrument track enable to record automatically everytime you open GB. Why? Have no idea!? If that track been leave with monitor to "on", and the original source of recording is different than the one use when the track have been set up, like for exemple, your Mbox is closed, GB automatically set the default audio source as the builtin microphone, if there is one. Imagine if the input level is at its max, feedback occur!
Is it possible GB don't use your Mbox as audio input, and set builtin microphone instead, which is really really sensible? Or have you forget to check in the track infos and forgot to choose you Mbox as audio input for a particular track? Instead, builtin microphone is use by GB by default and the feedback occur? Btw, you have to do it everytime you create a new real instrument track, to verify if everything is ok before recording new stuff on the new track.
With my FA-101 Edirol, when I change the sample rate while GB is open, I have to restart the audio interface. If not, GB recordings sounds incorrect. In those cases, I prefer restart everything, GB and audio interface all together. That way, I'm sure everything is ok before trying a new recording.

  • How do I access NI's Komplete instruments like FM8, etc in Garageband?

Hello. I have a 2007 15-inch MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.3, a LaCie Rugged external hard drive connected via FireWire on which I keep many Native Instruments VSTs such as FM8, B4 and Abysyth, and an M-Audio Axiom Pro 61-key keyboard controller.
I'm just learning to use Garageband, but couldn't figure out how to get Garageband to launch Native Instruments' Komplete instruments like Absynth, FM8, B4, etc. in much the same way as Logic or Ableton Live is supposed to be able to do. As I looked through the Garageband user manual, I don't see anything about accessing software instruments like FM8 or anything that isn't already included in Garageband.
After getting frustrated with that, I remembered that M-Audio included a copy of Live Lite 7 with my keyboard controller, which I downloaded to my MacBook Pro hard drive. Upon launch, Ableton told me there was a newer version, Live Lite 8.
When I first downloaded Live Lite I tried to get it to look for my Native Instruments VSTs so I could access them in Live Lite. I believe that process worked but I never had the chance to even do one project in Live Lite.
More recently I decided to move my Native Instruments VSTs from one LaCie hard drive that had my iPhoto Library and iTunes Library on it, to a separate LaCie rugged hard drive that would only hold my Native Instruments VSTs, any new songs I recorded, etc. This process seemed to work out.
Today I tried to launch Live Lite in order to record a song with FM8. I also wanted to try out a Duet audio interface I received last week. Unfortunately when I opened Live Lite, I got that Apple "spinning beach ball" and the program froze right away, while it was saying it was "scanning for 'custom' VSTs." I tried several times to open Live Lite but to no avail. I am disappointed that I cannot use the program at all.
Is it because of the fact that I moved the Native Instruments from one hard drive to another? Is there possibly something wrong with NI instruments like Absynth, FM8, B4 and others? One other soft synth I recently downloaded and wanted to include in Live Lite was Sonic Charge's Synplant, but I deleted it when I grew concerned that a VST was causing Live Lite to freeze. I also tried to download Live Lite's latest version again from the Internet and replace the previously downloaded version, but it was still hanging.
I do know that the VSTs like FM8 are located in the Library folder, but I was not sure if that fact was causing Ableton to look for the VSTs in the wrong place.
So in summary, I would really like to work in Garageband (and eventually Logic Studio when I can buy it) and have complete access to instruments like FM8, Absynth, etc., including all the parameters and effects. But I can't seem to launch those instruments in Garageband. Failing that, I'd love to do the same thing in Ableton, but that program won't even launch. (That's probably a separate problem and requires questions for a different forum.)
Any help you could give me would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Out of curiosity, why are you installing VST's over AU's?
Assuming you have installed your FM8 etc an an AU plugin, in GarageBand you need to create a new software track. Then click the Edit tab in the Track info pane on the right side of GB's User interface. At the top of the list you will see the 'Sound Generator.' Click the Name - top option to reveal your Audio Unit Module list. Your 3rd party AU's including FM8 will be listed there. Click it and it will be loaded the the new sound generator. Then click the picture icon to the left to reveal the User Interface for your chosen AU.
I run Live 8 fine. All of the AU's I use in GB can be used in Live.

  • GarageBand locks up after installing Finale 2008 and Garritan Instruments

I'm having a problem with GarageBand 3 and Native Instruments (or Finale 2008a or Garritan Instruments)...
Our school bought a Finale 2008 5-pack which I'm installing on four new MacMinis and a MacBook. All of the computers have 1GB or RAM. We're running Mac OS 10.4.11 and iLife '06 (GarageBand 3.0.4)
I installed Finale 2008 as well as the updater to Finale 2008a. In addition, I installed the Garritan Instruments from the Finale CDs.
At [root level] on the Mac, GarageBand works fine. But, when users login on the same computer and launch GarageBand, the following error message appears:
    Native Instruments
Installation folder is not writable. Pease select a folder now.
GarageBand locks up and the user must force-quit. Prior to installing Finale and the Garritan Instruments, GarageBand was working fine.
    Suggestions???

I (finally) found an answer to this after several emails with Finale support and Native Instruments support. Solved by repairing permissions AND installing the "Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Installer Patch for KONTAKT PLAYER" from...
    http://www.native-instruments.com/
I installed this patch while logged in at root - then, repaired permissions afterwards.
Even though the 'problem computers' are running 10.4.11, it's the 10.5 Leopard patch that fixed it!!!

  • How do I properly map my electronic drums to GarageBand?

    Hello,
I have a set of Yamaha DTXplorer (DTXPL) midi drums, and have a problem using them with the majority of samples for GarageBand.
The biggest issue is that the Snare Drum doesn't seem to be mapped from the drum set to the software instruments. (Hitting the snare doesn't produce any sound). The other drum parts seem to work fine, just not the Snare Drum.
Is there any information on how to map my drum set to be completely in synch with GarageBand standards?

    Mapping DTXPLORER MIDI using GarageBand
Here is the (hopefully) definitive guide for getting a Yamaha DTXPLORER (a.k.a. DT-Explorer, DTXPL) electronic drum set to connect to Apple's GarageBand via MIDI.
SYMPTOM: When connecting DTXPLORER to GarageBand using MIDI, the snare drum is silent and the bass drum triggers a sort of snare roll instead of a bass hit.
PROBLEM: The DTXPLORER (for whatever reason) sends out the snare note on G2 (key 31) and the kick note on A2 (key 33). This is a non-standard MIDI key mapping for these instruments.
SOLUTION: Remap the snare and kick MIDI notes using the freeware app MidiPipe from SubtleSoft (http://homepage.mac.com/nicowald/SubtleSoft/) to the standard GarageBand MIDI keys using the following steps:
(Note: These settings were tested using GarageBand 3.0.2 and MidiPipe 1.4.1.)
    1. Connect your DTXPLORER via MIDI to GarageBand and verify that GarageBand can record the drum sounds.
    2. Close GarageBand.
    3. Launch MidiPipe. You will create a Pipe that looks like this:
    Midi In
    Key Mapper
    Key Mapper
    Midi Out
Do so by dragging the appropriate components from the Tools column to the Pipes column in the appropriate order.
    4. Once you've assembled the pipe (with the components in the correct order listed above), configure the settings as follows:
    Midi In:
    - Midi Input: (Your USB or FireWire MIDI device)
    - Options: check "hijack"
    Key Mapper (kick drum):
    - Key In: A2 (33)
    - Key Out: C3 (36)
    - Options: UNcheck "Solo selected "Key In""
    Key Mapper (snare drum):
    - Key In: G2 (31)
    - Key Out: D3 (38)
    - Options: UNcheck "Solo selected "Key In""
    Midi Out:
    - MIDI Output: MidiPipe Output 1
    - Options: UNcheck "Pass Through" and UNcheck "Use Note Off Velocity"
    5. Choose File: Save As and save your pipe to a memorable location. You will need to retrieve this file every time you wish to record your drum set using GarageBand.
    6. Relaunch GarageBand and attempt to record your drum set. The snare and the bass drum should now be mapped correctly!
Note: If you have having difficulties with the pipe and would like to verify that the key mapping is taking effect, add a "Keyboard" component to the pipe after the "Key Mapper"s. That will give you a visual representation of which key is being triggered for each drum pad.

  • I tried to add sf2 instruments.  I put them in the audio/banks file but they do not show up in the DSL instruments on Garage Band.  Why not?

How can I get sf2 intruments that I've downloaded to use in my GarageBand?  I have downloaded them and have put them both in the GarageBand instruments folder and the Audio/Banks folder of my Library, but they do not show up in GarageBand on the DSL instruments as they should.  I have some instruments in that category that I must have put in before, but can't find them in the audio/banks folder or the GarageBand instruments folder and cannot locate them with a my computer finder anywhere.  They are listed in the DSL instruments on GarageBand when I open the program.  Is there another library that this version of GarageBand can be using??  I have GarageBand '11 (version 6.0.4)d, which was updated a while back.  I had the previous version of GarageBand with a diffent system quite a bit earlier.  I've look in the "previous system" folder as well, and cannot find the instruments, or an audio/banks folder at all.

Mortimer,  iTunes does not know when you restore a file.  After you restore the file, you need to re-add the file to iTunes.
If you know exactly which files you restores, re-add them using File > Add File to LIbrary.
Otherwise, lre-add the folders.  iTunes has certain safeguards to reduce duplicates when you do this, which are not perfect but are better than nothing.  Start with a few small folders and see if you are happy with the results.

  • GarageBand '11 won't download additional loops

    Hola,
I have GarageBand '11, running on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. The Apple loops have lots of greyed-out loops that need downloading. I click to activate one, it tells me I must download the loop now or later. I click Now, it goes to Software Update which tells me there is nothing left to download because I am completely up to date. I restart GarageBand, and still the loops are missing.
    It's very frustrating!
In my Software Update download history it says the loops have already been downloaded, yet GarageBand still can't see them.
Anybody got any idea what to do?
    Thanks,
    Graham

I just ran into this and managed to solve it, but it was a pain.  Here's my situation:
    New iMac 27 inch
Used Migration Assistant to transfer all user accounts, user files, and applications off of an older (late 2006) iMac that had been upgraded to Snow Leopard and iLife '09
When trying to install the full set of Apple Loops and Software Instruments, I got the infamous "run Software Update but nothing ever downloads" problem.  After doing a lot of looking on these boards and elsewhere, I decided to uninstall GarageBand '11 and reinstall.  Uninstalling GarageBand '11 is a pain too; here's what I did:
Deleted GarageBand from the Applications folder
    Deleted the /Library/Application Support/GarageBand folder
Deleted the /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/Apple Loops for GarageBand folder
Deleted anything related to GarageBand in /Library/Receipts
And everything in ~/Library/Application Support/GarageBand (this is optional I think)
I then reinstalled GarageBand from the second install disk that came with my new computer, fired up GarageBand, and downloaded the recommended update.  Finally, I opened up a new Loops project; in the Loops Browser, selected one of the missing loops; got the "run Software Update now or later" dialog, and said "Later"; quit GarageBand.  Finally, I opened Software Update, and lo and behold! the near-mythical GarageBand Loops and SW Instruments update was there, all 1.2 GB of it!
I wish that Apple would come out with a patch for this, but in the meantime, if you're situation is similar to mine (upgraded GarageBand '11), you might try the deinstall / reinstall route and see if it works...

  • Problem Downloading Extra GarageBand Loops

Just bought a new iMac and ran into a problem downloading the extra greyed out loops. The issue occurred because I upgraded GarageBand through Software Update before downloading the extra files. After the upgrade Software Update no longer gives you an opportunity to download the loops even though they are still greyed out in the loops window.
The solution was a re-install of GarageBand from CD, & avoiding software update until the extra files were downloaded.

  • GarageBand already downloaded, Mac App Store asking me to pay for it again!

I have a 2008 model of the iMac. It started out on Snow Leopard and came with an iLife '09 disc which had GarageBand. It is now running OS X Yosemite and I have updated all of my iLife apps except for GarageBand. I wanted to update it from the Mac App Store, but the App Store asked me to pay for GarageBand again! Is this supposed to happen? Is there any way around this?

I wanted to update it from the Mac App Store, but the App Store asked me to pay for GarageBand again! Is this supposed to happen? Is there any way around this?
No, there is no way around that, sorry.
To upgrade from your  iLIfe '09 version of GarageBand to GarageBand 10.0 is a major upgrade - you can recognize a paid upgrade by the version number. If the first digits are different, it is a paid upgrade; only if only the digits behind the first decimal point change, it is a free update.
If you  upgrade, don't uninstall your current version. You may want to use your GarageBand '09 loops and instruments with the new version. It has a very different set of instrument and loops.

  • Is it possible to revert to Garageband 1 from Garageband 2?

Hi - the adventures in music making continue. My sister and I were trying to get more expertise in Garageband, and more sophisticated instrumentation, so I upgraded a few days ago. First to Tiger (great; classic programs do run more slowly than in Jaguar, but everything runs perfectly), and then to iLife 5.
The only program that is now giving me trouble is Garageband. It runs out of memory constantly, and won't even play a single track real instrument without freezing. I do realize I'm at the bottom of the specs for this program, and I've bought more memory for both our computers. That will bring us up to at least 640 megs each, which should help a bit. But, if it doesn't, can I uninstall Garageband 2 and revert to Garageband 1? Garageband 1 never gave me the slightest problem, and I never had a freeze on this machine before I upgraded the program.
Things I've done that might help: I got my utilities folder onto my iPod and then repaired permissions. I also tried repairing permissions from the hard drive itself, and I'm going to try running the daily, weekly and monthly scripts - something I do every month.
Again, the machine seems quite fast, and everything is working fine except for Garageband. I don't even want to try to open the program until I get the memory chip installed. Do you think that will solve my problem, and if it doesn't, can I revert?
    TIA

You cannot compile 6.2 lks file in 6.1, because there are some additional information in the lks file which cannot be reconganized by 6.1.
An option is to manually edit the 6.2 lks file to match the 6.1 style. You need to get a 6.1 lks file as example. The header (first 20 lines) in lks file may be different.
