Garageband 11: lagging or unresponsive interface; frequently crashes; and is using way too much memory
Since updating to the newest version of Garageband I've noticed a distinct slow down in interface and functionality; makes editing incredibly difficult having to wait 2-3 seconds after selecting a note or section; sometimes the whole app becomes unresponsive or just crashes altogether. It also completely maxes out memory usage (8GB!) My machine specs are below but I can't imagine why I couldn't run it. It boots up in about 5 seconds and before Mavericks I could run Logic, Garageband, MS Word, Adobe Edge Animate, and Adobe Muse without it breaking a sweat. Now it's running the fans at full blast using way more memory than is necessary.
My Machine
The OS and Applications run off of a 120GB SSD and instead of an Optical drive I use a data doubler and a second internal (500GB HDD) for backups and extra storage - neither are anywhere near capacity.
Also, I'm not running any other apps, and even tried disabling network connections; no change at all. I do know that Mavericks uses memory differently (don't fully understand the benifit or how it works) but when I open Activity Monitor while running GarageBand it show's my "Memory Used:" at 7.99GB/8GB; but the pressure is still in the green. Could someone please explain to me how the memory usage differs now and why my machine needs to use all of the memory at once to run GarageBand when it is the only app open?
Why is it that 10.9 is substantially more taxing than 10.8 while claiming to be the opposite? What am I missing here?
Please Help! :-)
Since updating to the newest version of Garageband I've noticed a distinct slow down in interface and functionality;
Your question is a bit ambigious - the "Newest version" would be GarageBAnd 10.0.1, but the title of your question says GarageBand '11. Are you saying, you upgraded to GarageBand 10.0, but now GarageBand '11 (version 6.0.5) is having troubles?
makes editing incredibly difficult having to wait 2-3 seconds after selecting a note or section; sometimes the whole app becomes unresponsive or just crashes altogether.
Perhaps a crash log could help. Or error messages from the Console window. Does the Console.app show any diagnostic messages, when this hanging occurs?
and before Mavericks I could run Logic, Garageband, MS Word, Adobe Edge Animate, and Adobe Muse without it breaking a sweat.
Have all these applications been updated to the latest, Mavericks compatible versions? And all other non-Apple applications?

Skype keeps crashing after taking too much memory
Hello,
So my version of skype client is 7.3.0.101 and it doesn't stop crashing since a few months now.
Here's precisely what happens : I launch it, it's pretty slow since the problem the problem appeared but something like 30 after it crashes. We can see in the task manager that skype progressively takes way too much memory, most of the time it starts at 150 Mo and quickly reaches 1200-1400 Mo before crashing.
I noticed that skype took less memory by running it in compatibility mode for windows XP service pack 3, it stays stuck at 200 Mo, but my whole computer looks slower.
I tried everything but nothing worked, I uninstalled and reinstalled it, I added or modified keys in my registry, added skype to exceptions in my fire-walls, tried to install an older version (which didn't work because of auto update)... I don't know what to do now, that's why I come here to ask for help
Also one more thing : It exessively takes my processor power (arround 14% all the time), and my processor is an i7-4770.
Thanks a lot if you decide to help me !Have you tried these?

HI,
I have an IMac with 4 G of Ram and am using Apeture 3.51. When trying to edit CS2 raw files I experience frequent crashes and freez ups of the whole computer. Any suggestions? You didn't mention any color calibration being done on your monitor. This is an essential part of any color-correct workflow. What are you using to calibrate your monitor (and your printer)?
Print profiles (for soft-proofing as well as printing) are for specific combinations of paper & printer. The nine you have are each, most likely, for a common paper (perhaps mfr'd by Canon) to be used with your printer.
I don't know what you mean when you say "I choose a high standard print option".
Have you read the User Manual chapter on printing?
Printing Your Images
There is also a good appendix on calibration:

the camera app on my iphone 4S is crashing and while using the rear video cam black wavy lines are appearing but only when exposed to flurescent light in addition to the front cam... can any one please tell me what is happening???
Try resetting your phone by holding down the home and off button until the apple symbol comes up. Then if still doing, restore your phone in itunes from your backup.

PC crashed and now using a different PC. How do I get my iTunes library back from the failed PC on the PC being used now?
Extract the hard drive from the faulty computer and recover the library from it or see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. (At least one link in there may be useful even if you don't have such a device.)

Fire fox crashes and freezes if i use it too much (kind of a good thing). For example if i use stumble fire fox will start to slow down then freeze completely. I am using windows XP pro and a pretty decent computer. All software is up to date and i do no have a virus. I have even tried to disable my add-ons and plug-ins but it did not make a difference. Does anyone have a solution or should i just switch to chrome?

Dock frequently crashes and restarts when entering Mission Control
Hello,
Long time lurker, first time poster here. Hoping someone can help me with this issue.
I am running Mac OS X Lion (10.8) on a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 24" iMac with 12 GB RAM. Peripherals include Apple wired keyboard, Apple Magic Trackpad, Logitech G9x laser mouse, and a Seagate USB External Hard Drive, and an old Dell 17" LCD (E177FP) connected as a second monitor.
Throughout the day, I work with Adobe Photoshop, Abode Indesign, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, BB Edit, Cyberduck, iTunes, Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection, Terminal, Text Edit, Screen Sharing, Microsoft Excel 2011, Microsoft Word 2011, and additional applications across eight desktops in Mission Control (for a total of 16 screens, with the two diaplays).
Approximately 6-12 times a day Mission Control will become unresponsive while entering it, whether by using four-finger swipe up on trackpad, mouse button 4 on Logitech mouse, or control + up arrow on keyboard. I can still move the mouse cursor, type in applications, and click on applications. However, the dock relaunches (all of my minimized windows at restored to my screen) and then Mission Control is responsive again. The window of unavailability is about 10 seconds.
I have used Macs for years now and never before have I had to deal with such a minor (yet frequent) inconvenience. They have always "just worked."
I am including my most recent crash report and am hoping that someone will have a solution that doesn't involve installing the operating system from scratch.
Thank you for your time.
Joe

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
IPhone 4s frequently crashes, and Apple genius is recommending iTunes backup
We had our iPhone 4s replaced recently, and restored it from our iCloud back-up (we always back up to iCloud, and not to iTunes).
After a couple of days, we started experiencing frequent crashes, as in the phone becoming unresponsive, the hour glass showing up and getting stuck, and other problems which wouldn't be solved until we did a hard restart. Also, the battery was draining pretty fast.
We then took it to a genius bar, and my wife is told that it is because we had restored the phone from an iCloud back-up??? They said we'd need to start backing up to iTunes now to avoid this problem or the crashes would happen again. Unfortunately I wasn't there, and she didn't get any knowledge base article or anything that would substantiate what they were saying.
So they are recommending we back up to iTunes now to avoid this issue, and that we turn off our phone at least weekly.
Is anyone aware of a similar issue or a related knowledge base article?
Baffled...I suspect your wife either misinterpreted what the genius was trying to tell her or the genius she dealt with is not quite up to snuff.
When you see problems like yours, that are software, not hardware, & you find that the backup of a previous phone was restored to the new phone, this almost always means corruption in the backup. Restoring from a corrupt backup will merely continue to restore the problem. What the genius "may" have been trying to suggest is to delete your existing iCloud backup; restore the phone as a "new" device in iTunes; follow that by syncing your content back to the phone. You can then backup to either iCloud, iTunes, or do both. -
Blue boxes and frequent crashes--and no plugins
I'm another one who has been experiencing frequent Safari crashes and blue boxes instead of photos on certain pages.
I've read the voluminous posts and responses and still can't find one that solves my problem. I have checked the Library -->Internet Plug-Ins and there is no Java plug-in there.
However in Safari under Help-->Installed Plug-Ins, the Java Plug in for Cocoa is listed there.
I have not downloaded or installed any add-ons for Safari.
If anyone has any other suggestions, please help!
Message was edited by: charliechaplinDid you run the Java 4 update that was available via Software Update? That should have put it into <you boot volume>/Library/Internet Plug-Ins and not into <you boot volume>/Users/<your username>/Library/Internet Plug-Ins. Give that a look see. If you don't have it, then manually download and install it, repair permissions, and restart. Retry Safari. If no go, download and reinstall Safari and repeat the other steps.

Frequent crashes and freezes on iPhone 3GS
My 3GS I recieved after Christmas last year has been freezing and crashing everday for a few months. The screen locks up and displays odd pink lines, it shuts off randomly, or just freezes. Is it worth taking it in? I just hard reset it everytime, it doesn't effect anything.
On another note, where can I get new earbuds? I've had several pairs from different products and they've all broke.Of course you should take it back.
I cannot believe how many people live with fault equipment for months without doing something about it and then discover that the product is out of warranty.
If your phone is under warranty, and by the sound of it you are almost out of date, take it back to Apple for it to be looked at.
If it has hardware issues, then they will replace it, if it's software issues they 'should' be able to fix it.
Before you take it back though, make sure you sync everything to your computer because if they replace it, you will get a fresh phone with none of your data on it.
Earbuds are a consumer choice, Apple make them as do many other companies, and many are very low in quality. Again, if they break without too much abuse, I would be going back to the manufacturer and demanding a replacement/refund for them too. -
FCP crashes, and opening and saving projects take too much time
Since my upgrade to FCP 5.0.4 I’m having trouble on several aspects of FCP.
I am using an Xserve raid storage, connected via fiberchannel to an Xserve with 10.4.4.
The editing computers are connected via fiberchannel and Xsan to the central storage.
FCP runs on an Apple G5, and my projects run from an external disk described as above. Al the other FCP scratch disk settings are also set on the external disks.
Example:
I’m using the FCP 5.0.4 with the multi-clip mode, and one of the consequences is, that my projects become relatively large. The larger they become, the longer it takes to open (up to 10 minutes) it and to save it (up to 2 minutes). Together with these problems, FCP crashes a lot.
I set my “auto-save” at an interval of 15 minutes, to prevent to loose a lot of work, but when it takes 2 minutes to “auto-save” each time, I loose a lot of time.
So when my project was 224 MB, I made a copy of my project, and opened it from a local drive. Opening the project took also 10 minutes. But when it was open, “saving” the project took only 15 seconds, instead of 2 minutes. The “auto-save” was still on the external scratch disk. “Auto-saving” still took 2 minutes. So I set the “auto-save” on a local scratch disk, and after that, it took only 15 seconds. Opening the project still took 10 minutes. And the FCP didn’t crash frequently.
My conclusion would be that the problems have something to do with the size of the project in combination with the connection with the external scratch disks. Is this correct? If yes, how do I solve this.
And if not, what else could it be?
Out of memory
Another problem occurred when my project was 327 MB. I had a multi-clip sequence of 100 minutes, with 4 camera angles and a lot of cuts and effects in it. When I tried to “nest” the sequence, it didn’t work and got the message: “out of memory” . Then FCP crashed.
When I opened the project again (it took 10 minutes), I could not save it anymore: ”out of memory”. So now I cannot work with this project anymore.
How do I solve this?
Is my project or sequence too big?
Another crash example
FCP crashed sometimes, when I switch my “Ëxternal Video” setting from “Blackmagic 8 bit” to “Firewire PAL”. Could this have something to do with it the problems I previously described?
Can anyone help me with these problems?
G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4)I've run into a simliar problem and I believe I traced the issue down to the number of files on the drive. A drive I was using had over 600,000 files on it. Opening projects took 5+ minutes, saving took 2+, for a 15 minute simple project.
See if that is your issue.
Edit: 600,000 files on the scratch/capture disk. -
I have not ascertained what causes the crashes. I do believe they are much more frequent and as stated abovbe, I wonder if they have to do with unresolved issues with my graphics card as stated on the troubleshooting page.
I realize that I have an HP/Compaq Presario s6500NX computer- and running 32 bit Windows with Windows XP Service Pack 4.
I have upgraded to the newest Firefox for security reasons but wonder, among other solutions, if there might be a previous version of Firefox that is more stable for my older hardware and software. Thanks.Oops, SP3 I meant.

How to fix iPad 3G frequent crashes and going to reboot loop
II'm having problems with my iPad 3G iwi-fi it always crashes while using and sometimes it goes to a reboot loop. I tried everything reset, pressing the home and power buttons, and even restored it many times but still the problems can't be fixed. Is there someone knows what to do?
If anyone has faced this issue and was able to fix it, I am hoping from you to share your fix.
If no fix is there, so i can take it to be fixed since it is not under warranty, and wehre i live it will cost a lot for fixing -
Time capsule is frequently crashing and has to be powered off and back on
I have had my Time Capsule for several months with no problems. Last few weeks it is crashing several times per day and has to be powered off and back on. When this happens there is no light of any color. The reset button does not work and I have to unplug it and then plug it back in. I have the latest updates. A couple of times it wouldn't restart after I plugged it back in for 10-15 minutes. Any thoughts?
At minimum power down your entire network starting with modem first. Then wait a few and power back on start with modem first.

Frequently crashing and restarting. Zone map exhausted
I'm a Mac newbie having use of a friends MacBook Air Model A1465 (2013). It keeps restarting with the usual notification and a system log report which I've copied in below.
At first I associated it with TimeMachine and the ADATA HD710 2TB external hard drive I'm using to back it up, however I have no clue and I'd like to resolve it if possible.

If the panic is recurrent, I suggest you uninstall all of them according to the developers' instructions, reboot, and see whether there's any improvement. If there is, you can experiment with putting them back, one at a time, to identify which one is at fault.
