Garageband-24 bit?

What is the bit rate of audio that is recorded onto Garageband? I just got a new Zoom G21U multieffects pedal with a USB connection so that it can be used as an interface with my Mac. The Zoom box has a sampling rate of 96 kHz and 24 bit A/D/A conversion. How does this compare with the results of recording on Garageband?
This product came with Steinberg Cubase LE- I'm wondering how Cubase and Garageband compare. Any opinions?
Many thanks-
Remulak

Well well, an interesting twist!
I did a quickie test, converted a 16 bit AIFF to a 24 bit AIFF and dropped it in GB3, GB 3 happily imported it. I then checked to see if it had down-sampled the file to 16-bit and it had not!
It looks like GB3 is going to require some further testing to see just what more can be done.

  • Garageband 8-bit error

I usually record class lectures using garageband. I haven't had any problems so far, but one of the lecture is giving me an error. This is the first time i have tried to open it since it was recorded. At first i get a message that says "this file is not supported" then it says "GarageBand found 1 audio file(s) in 8 bit format. This format is unsupported and cannot be played back."
I have been trying for hours without any luck. Is this an unfixable bug? Anyone find a fix?
    thank you

Which version of GarageBand are you using?
I have never seen this 8-bit error myself, but when someone reported the issue, it usually has been caused by a corrupted project. In that case try to rebuild the project by opening the package and extraction the audio files, as described in this post by Christoph Drösser:

  • Is there a GarageBand community to obtain music bits?

Hi - I'm not a musician at all so I have only tinkered with GarageBand a bit. I recently made a video of a big vacation I went on. I used music from CDs and iTunes - the finished DVD is being sent to only a few folks. I have had requests to post this video on the web which I would like to do. However, based upon the music I've used - I know it can get sticky with copyright, etc. so I'm holding off.
Is there a place where GarageBand "composers" show-off their compositions and allow other people to use them (full credit to be noted if used)? If so, I'd love to know as I'm in need of seven short clips. Thanks.
    Steve

"Is there a place where GarageBand "composers" show-off their compositions and allow other people to use them?"
Planet GarageBand. They're not open just yet, but I do know that they will have a special section for people to do this. Hope that helps.

  • Volume Meters: iMovie vs Garageband

    Hi all
I really need some help with this...
I am trying to create some music video files for a performance at the end of March using Garageband to create the audio then exporting the audio then importing it into iMovie.
However, I am running into an issue...
Basically when I am creating my audio in Garageband I ensure that the volume meter is not going into the Yellow/Red to ensure there is no distortion when played through a PA system... however, after exporting the music file then importing it into iMovie the track in iMovie is going into the yellow and red again forcing me to turn the audio down again, however, I am worried that I am going to loose too much volume and the videos will be too quiet when played through the PA system. Could anybody advise.
Please note that I have tried exporting the audio out of Garageband both with and without normalisation, both give same results just with the normalised track going more into the yellow/red than the non-normalised track.
    Thanks
    James

    Yes, that's my suggestion.
That's the way it's "done" in the professional world.
I've used GarageBand a bit, but I'm not familiar with the normalization feature.

  • Torn between buying either the New (Mid 2012) 13" Macbook Pro or the New (Mid 2012) 13" Macbook Air

Which notebook do you think has more "life" in it?  Which will be the more outdated machine sooner i.e. which one do you think Apple will stop supporting and allowing you to update to the most current OS?  I'm going to get the base model of either and probably upgrade to the 8G of RAM since it's only $100 bucks more.
From my research thus far it seems to pan out like this:
Pro: More HD space, but slower hard drive.  Screen isn't as nice.  More powerful processor but I have read that performance is somehow equal to the Air (this is where I'm a little confused).
Air: Less HD space, but the SSD makes the machine open apps and such faster.  Prettier screen.  Equal performance even though the processor is not as powerful (again ?????).  It's just cooler looking and perhaps Apple will be phasing out the base level Macbooks in favor of Airs in the future (just a guess).
I will mostly use the computer at home, but it's looking likely I'll be traveling for work soon.  Even then the notebook probably won't leave my extended stay.  I will mostly be using it for fun: web surfing, streaming movies to my xbox via Vuze (I usually delete movies/shows after 1 viewing), email, ect.  I don't do any photo or movie editing but I may mess around with Garageband a bit.  Any other words of wisdom on choosing between the two systems, or if for my needs you think I should go with something completely different, would be helpful as well
Thanks so much for your help! - James

A year ago it would have been a 'no contest' situation in my mind. the MBP would bethe choice hands down.  Since you can get SSD replacements/upgrades from OWC (and probably others as well) the Air looks far more attractive.  SSD prices are going to fall quite rapidly and what might be a prohibitory expensive upgrade today will not be so in the near future.
I have come to accept (grudgingly) that the future of an internal DVD drive is limited, but the slim ones that Apple has available convinces me that is no longer such a big issue.  I do not subscribe to the argument that all downloads can always be done via the Internet.  No communications protocol is 100% perfect as is the hardware supporting it.
You are the final arbiter in this decision and I will not endorse one over the other.  Simply put, either one is a good choice from my perspective.
    Ciao.

  • Saffire Pro 24(Non DSP) Logic Studio 9 Signal through interface but no signal through logic, PLEASE HELP!

I recently purchased a saffire pro 24, rode nt1000 condeser mic, and Logic 9. My Problem is that I don't know how to get a signal through the DAW. There is a signal through the interface I can hear the mic through the head phones. With Mix Control I have the routing preset set to "DAW Tracking" with line output 3 and 4 set to Analog 1 so I can hear the Mic. All the other settings are untouched. On Logic I have everything untouched except for preference>audio I set the input and output to saffire with a buffer size of 256 but I can't hear ANYTHING through the DAW only the interface itself. Any help would be greatly appreaciated. This is my first studio set up I have toyed around with garageband a bit.

    AndySeng wrote:
thanks! it worked while recording but the gain is real high on the interface for only a low signal on the DAW. How do you turn on monitering?
The Rode mic needs Phantom power, do you have that turned on? (if not, turn the input gain down first)
The audio interface will have a gain control for the mic, it may or may not have sensitivity switches that can give you more gain, either that or a trim control.
The software monitoring is well... right next to where you set your interface and I/O buffer.
Two cents of advice, reading the manual (over and over) of your hardware interface is a must. In order to make decent recordings you will have to know and understand your hardware. Same with Logic, it's pretty easy to get going on Logic but to use more than 2 or 3% of what the program is capable of the manual and online help is a necessity. Also your mic.
I tell clients that wish to learn Logic to pretend they have no Internet access, just the program and the manuals + online help.
They usually tell me to leave at that point.

  • My user points in the GB forum dropped from 970 to 735?

I was listed in the GB forums "Top Users In Category" with 930 points. Then today suddenly it dropped to 735 points. What happened to my hard earned points?

Nobody wants you to leave. I have noticed that the harder I work in a thread the less likely I am to get any points out of it. My motivation is helping where I can and investigating something if I don't know it so I can learn more myself.
I don't think the Top Users is really a good place to look at. I don't know how those numbers work. I noticed that you have some old posts that are no longer online. I think that is where those points went. I think it calculates the number of points you have online and if your posts get moved offline (for whatever reason, however that works) you lose category points. That would be a good thing as old users stop participating and new people come on. If someone hasn't logged on for 2 years, why should they keep their top ranking?
Another problem with "Top Users" is that it is where you are essentially competing with others. No matter how hard you work, there could be someone who you could never reach. I used to be #1 in Software Development but got knocked down by RayNewbie. At least he has 4000 points till to earn before he gets level 4. Of course, at his rate of point accumulation, he'll be there in 18 months. (No - I'm not kidding)
My suggestion is to expand out from Garageband a bit into some other forums where you feel comfortable. If you see a question with an easy answer, fire it off. The points alone isn't a good reason to participate. You need to find something else to get out of it for yourself.

  • GarageBand 10.0.3 will not load any of my 64-bit plugins

    Hello all,
I recently upgraded to Mac OS X Yosemite and updated GarageBand to 10.0.3.  However, when I try to load any of my 64-bit plugins, I get the following error messages:
The Audio Unit “Dimension P” could not be loaded for your project, and may need to be updated. Contact the manufacturer for an updated version or further assistance.
The Audio Unit “LinuxSample” could not be loaded for your project, and may need to be updated. Contact the manufacturer for an updated version or further assistance.
The Audio Unit “Rapture” could not be loaded for your project, and may need to be updated. Contact the manufacturer for an updated version or further assistance.
(Note that I am using SoundRadix's 32 Lives to make the Dimension Pro and Rapture Audio Units usable as 64-bit plugins.
Interestingly enough, both "LinuxSampler" and "Dimension Pro" are truncated at 11 characters.

GarageBand can only record at the  44.1 kHz sample rate.
The error message you are seeing is typical for two apps fighting for the sample rate, for example if you open Logic Pro before launching GarageBand.
Try to change the sample rate back to 44.1 kHz in the utility Audio Midi Setup (In the folder Applications > Utilities).

  • Garageband error message 8 bit

Garageband had been doing well for us, until the other day when sharing to ITunes, an error message saying, 'unsupported file type, files found at 8 bit...', and i've tried everything to change the file types even online, to reset preferences, including the 'audio midi' and so on.  Still it says that this song, which had previously been successfully uploaded to ITunes, etc., and which we're now re-mixing, will not let us do anything as far as saving or changing to 16 bits and so on. What is going on, please? How may we fix it?   Thanks!
basically: how can i send the song to itunes where it can be converted to an mp3, since the error message occurs 'wrong file type ..8 bit' when i try to send the newly edited song to itunes.
i have, which is not on the list, a macbook pro 10.5.8 and garageband 08 4.1.2

Do your files have the extension showing? If not, you could experiment adding extensions like .aif, .aiff and see if that makes a difference, and also slide the files directly onto the Quicktime icon, forcing Quicktime to open it if it possibly can.
I was curious about this so I checked it out. The Wikipedia page lists a few issues that could cause problems:

Other than that, the only thing I can think of is file corruption.

  • Garageband seeing 16 bit wav files as 8 bit.

I am using Garage band 11.  I have a session with speech and music.  I came back to edit it and it would not open saying the audio was 8 bit. It was not it was wav and 44.1/16 bit.  I opened the package contents and checked the wav files and they played fine.  So how and why did Garageband suddenly see then as 8 bit?
    I lost my whole session.
    And ideas

i don't know the "why," but all is not lost yet.
create a new project and drop the audio file into the timeline of the new project. if it really is a 44.1k 16-bit aiff file, then it should import into the new project.

  • GarageBand does not open, but it's a bit bouncy....

Here's the dilemna: I need to create some stuff for my teacher for our Yearbook/Yeardisc, and I was going to use GarageBand to do this with. (Already know how, just hoping this will provide some incentive to help some random loser in another state as you reading the forum's post)
    PROBLEM!
Garageband, like it's iLife partner iMovie HD, does not open. But it does bounce in the dock, like any other application that decides to open.
About half a minute later, bouncing stops.
    Application does not open.
I look at the info in the finder, ie, the version number and last opened, modified, etc. It says that it was last opened the day that I tried opening it. (And any other time that I try to open it, it updates.)
Solution needed. Details abotu my machine are given below; also! It's running two 60GB hard drives, if that has anything to do with it. Honestly, I don't know much about the details of the machine, as my father fixed it up. So if any helpful hints or tips can be given (or even a place to find and download another video editing program, or a program that can do the same thing as GarageBand -I think it's under podcasting, the thing that I want to do, but I don't quite remember for certain; we did the initial project several months ago-), then please do so!
Also posting a copy in iMovie help, since that's another alternative that cannot be used...
Sorry if my post seems a bit vague or too... difficult to understand, but I'm not quite sure what the problem is.
    GarageBand Version: 3.0.4
    iMovie Version: 6.0.3
I also thought I saw one of my peers using iPhoto to create a photo-vide montage, with music, but it was the finished product, so I'm not so certain.... If anyone knows how this was done, please let me know!
EDIT: I ust learned an important lesson. Brackets are used differently on the forums here.... Note to self....

  • Can Garageband for iOS record 24bit? (24-bit)

Can garageband for iOS record 24bit? I see other competitors can so wondering if Garageband? Would be a shame
if it can't as of the whole scaling up opening sessions in Logic for further work..
    Thanks!

I can't find a defitive support docuemnt from Apple, but as far as I can tell the camera kit can handle 44.1 or 48 kHz 16-bit audio. No evidence of 24-bit support in GB for iOS, either for import or export. Uncompressed audio input files are expected to be in 44.1kHz/16-bit.
