GarageBand and supported Audio Interfaces

Hi
Is there a list of supported audio interfaces that work with GB 09?
Cheers.

Strange that Logic sees it but not GB.
First, I'd make sure the audio interface is selected in GB's preferences.
If there's still a problem, you could always try throwing out both GB preference files, which often fixes mystery problems. However, I've found that problems with the computer not seeing the interface can sometimes be fixed by restarting the computer and cycling the interface of and on (occasionally I've needed to do this twice). And then confirm the interface is seen/selected in GB's preferences (also - you can check more universally in the Audio/MIDI Setup utility).

• Windows and firewire audio interfaces

I have a new MBP I'm getting set up with windows, and everything has gone fine but I'm stuck trying to get my Presonus Firebox audio interface to work. I've been poking around and it seems to be a pretty wide spread problem, so I thought I would consolidate some information and hopefully get a few recommendations.
My basic problem is that the Firebox seems to install fine, but is not useable by any application (ASIO reports the error "No sound device is connected to the PC." when selecting the Firebox). I've done the usual tests, and the device works fine in OS X, in Windows on different computers, etc. Only issue is in Windows running under boot camp.
The problem doesn't seem confined to a specific windows version (personally tried XP SP2 and SP3, seen reports of Vista).

The problem does not seem to be about the firewire chipset (I've seen reports of problems with some chipsets, but my MBP is several days old with the TI chipset, which as far as I know has no known problems).
The primary app I use that's critical needs ASIO drivers, so I installed ASIO4ALL and that works fine -- it's not a long-term solution, but I can run with it for a little while. Right now I'm primarily interested in understanding what the variables are, i.e., are there any interfaces known to work with my config of hardware, or is there anyone using my config that's running one of these 'problem' interfaces without problems? I've got the 15" MBP at 2.6, with 4 GB of main memory and 512 MB of video.
thanks much,

Also please have some sympathy for the Apple programmers.
This has been an extremely frustrating experience, and it's started me off on the mac platform feeling pretty negatively toward apple. I get that boot camp is a collision of independent companies where no one really has full responsibility, and I don't fault apple for bad drivers (including some REALLY bad drivers, like the broadcom wireless, which I think is dubious to even claim that it works). I have two basic issues with apple: I wish they would have acknowledged the existing problems on the front page of the support, and provided links (making sure everyone knows up front you should try turning off wireless would resolve a number of complaints here). Also, for us laptop users, I have issues with being dependent on apple for drivers (i.e. for the nvidia card). Not knowing if a problem is fixed by a recent driver, and not having access to that driver, is very frustrating. There's the same problem with PC vendors, but at least they have market pressure to keep drivers up to date; Apple has a monopoly on machines that run OS X.
How do you like that Tascam unit?
Now that I've had it a little while, I'm very impressed. What I don't like:
* The largish form factor and ridiculous big knob and buttons that I find worthless.
What I'm ambivalent on:
* The sound quality -- at first I thought it wasn't very good, but I suspect I was being subtly influenced by the fact that I think it's hideously ugly. Now, with it at home and integrated, it sounds pretty good, the output at least is approaching the firebox/828mkII range. Don't know about the preamps, that's hard to say without A/Bing but they are at least decent. Overall I have no complaints at all with the sound quality, certainly not enough for me to pull out another device and really try and compare.
What I like:
* The drivers are multiclient, letting multiple audio apps run simultaneously -- not sure how common that is, half the interfaces I've owned can do that and half can't.
* Fully bus-powered. The firebox has a problem where, on the new MBP, you need to have the power supply plugged in when first starting up; it's nice to not deal with that.
* And then a couple small things that are obvious from the pictures: The knobs are reasonably spaced (the firebox and some motu's are way too close together); dual headphone jacks is nice; independent volume and gain controls on everything is nice (my old 828mkII had a single encoder for both volume and main outs, which drove me nuts).
Overall, for the price you can get them at now (US$135), I think it's a really, really good deal.

• Using GarageBand with DJ audio interface

Hi. I have an audio interface (Final Scratch Amp) which is designed for use by DJ's. As long as it has a driver for the mac (CoreAudio) is there any reason that GarageBand wouldn't recognize it? I will be using the firewire port; I have an iBook laptop and Tiger.
Thank you

if its Mac compatible, and doesn't need it's own software to be used, it should work.

• Supported audio interfaces

Hello all,
I just picked up a new MacBook Pro and was surprised to find out my mbox2 wouldn't work with it. Pretty sure it's a usb3/power thing. That being said, it's probably time for a new interface anyway. My question is, "Is there a list of supported interfaces anywhere?" Preferably audio/midi. It'd be nice to browse something like that before taking a plunge.
Thanks for any light you can shed on this.
Dave

• Recording Skype using Soundflower and usb audio interface as aggregate

I want to record Skype calls.
I installed Soundflower and Audacity records Skype far side audio fine when Soundflower is selected as the input. However, I want to record far side audio PLUS my microphone that runs through my Focusrite Forte usb audio interface (Audacity records my mic just fine with Forte selected as the input).
So I created an aggregate input device in OS 10.9 consisting of the Forte and Soundflower inputs. When I test out the aggregate audio input in the Mac audio settings, I see soundbars from both devices. However, when I choose the aggregate device as the input in Audacity, only the Forte device is recorded (not Skype).
Any ideas as to why only one of the two devices in the aggregate input is being recorded by Audacity?
Did I set up the aggregate incorrectly?
Many thanks!

The people over in the GarageBand forums are amazing at diagnosing and fixing these sorts of things. I recommend that you give it a try posting the question over there:

• Live Capture with a camera via firewire and usb audio interface

I am trying to do a live capture through Final Cut 7.
I want the video feed through the firewire from my HVX200 and the audio feed from a 4 channel usb audio interface (Alesis iO4).
When I have both audio and video input coming in from the HVX200, the live capture works fine.
However, when I change the audio input so that it is coming from the usb audio interface, final cut has an error message saying "Video is not available."
During the preview, I see the video clearly and am getting levels from the iO4.
But when I try to capture, I get the error message.
Is it a processor issue (I've attached my specs below) with problems handling 2 separate inputs?
I'm not quite sure what the problem is.
Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi MtD,
Yes I am changing the Capture preset to iO4. Once that happens, it lets me run both the camera and the iO4 into the laptop but then an error message pops up the moment I try to capture it.
I was only trying to use 3 out of the 4 channels of the iO4.
Thanks!

• Is there a way to use the onboard mic and an audio interface simultaneously with the iPad?

I teach bass lessons with skype and was wondering if theres a way to do this with an ipad
Can the ipad pic up my voice(through internal mic) and bass(throgh audio interface) simultaniusly and then use both of those signals with skype?
Any ideas on how I might teach skype lessons with an ipad? Thanks http:/http://basslessonsunlimited.com

Yes.
1) Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on your existing wireless router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
2) Go through the standard configuration suggested by the setup "wizard"
3) Then manually turn off the wireless function using AirPort Utility

• GarageBand`11 with audio interface

Is it possible to send through a audio interface a click track to the drummer headphones and the rest of the tracks to the PA´s?. We need that to live performance, so de click track not to be listened by de audience
I know thats possible with other software but I´m using GB and I wonder if it´s also possible with it.
Thx
Manu

you would need to pan the click track to one side (e.g. left) and everything else to the other side (e.g. right)
GB only offers two channel-OUT

• Installing Logic and the audio interface

I will finish reading all the manuals one day soon… but meanwhile, and because I haven’t found anything on the subject yet, can anyone please tell me if I should I install Logic first and then install the Audio Interface (MOTU 828 Mk3), or should it be the other way around? Or is it of any difference??
(I know with Cubase u must install the Audio interface first – but that’s a totally different scenario)
Thanks

Install both, in whichever order you prefer, then restart and configure *Audio MIDI Setup*, and/or any dedicated MOTU software (drivers, control panel) and Logic (audio and MIDI preferences/settings).

• Surround /mixing and monitoring audio interface

Dear forum,
I am searching for an audio interface to use with MBP or G5 for mixing and monitoring of four to 6 outputs channels into PMC active speakers. I am using a Lavry DA 11 DAC for stereo monitoring. I do not require an interface with inputs for recording music as all my recording is done away from my macs, it just the outputs i need to monitor audio I have loaded to computer via CF card. All the interfaces I see have loads of inputs I don't require. Is there an interface available without inputs?
Or I am looking at the wrong sort of device?
regards
David

You need an interface that has 8 outputs. Most of these include 8 or more inputs as well. The inputs will not be a problem when mixing, you can ignore them.
I have yet to see an interface that is only outputs.

• Question for music producers ! MacBook Pro and my audio interface from Virus Ti doesn't seem to work properly after I updated 10.9.4 Mavericks

Hello
Few days ago I upgraded my Macbook Pro to 10.9.4 Mavericks And I’m using the sound card from the Virus Ti for all audio in/out and when I’m not producing music , I usually close my Logic and I use the Virus Ti as a sound card for listening to Soundcloud or iTunes on my Mac and the audio usually come out of my studio monitors , but right now even when everything is connected , the sounds from the web site is coming out from my Macbook speaker instead of my studio monitors ? and I already checked the “Output/Input” in preference and is already say Access Virus Ti and I already repair disc too ! ,
Right now when I’m using Logic to produced with Virus sound card everything is working fine and the audio is coming out of my monitors but as soon as I turn off Logic to use Youtube or other web site, the audio automatic switch back to laptop speakers ?
If anyone had this problems with their audio interface and OS 10.9.4 , please advise !

• Does Logic support Audio Interface and MIDI simultaneously over USB?

Hi -
I'm new to this so please bear with me :-). I have a MacBook running Logic. Also have a MIDI controller hooked up via USB.
I also have a USB Mixer that I'd like to hookup to the Mac's audio output. Currently, I have the MacBook's headphone output going into the mixer. I'd love to get the cleaner sound afforded by the USB connection. Is this possible while keeping the MIDI connection over USB?

Thanks, Fox. You're right - I just tried it out and it worked out very well (although I'm getting I high-pitched noise through my monitor speakers only when Logic is running. The noise stops when I exit out of Logic.)
I couldn't get myself to believe that the Mac/Logic could keep the USB data straight - MIDI on one, and audio on the other, but sure enough, it works just fine. :-)
Thanks!

• Usb ports and FW ports not supporting audio interfaces

Peace! I have recently ran into a situation with a fire wire interface and usb interface, where neither one will stay powered for a long time. Now its to the point where my macbook, doesn't recognize them at all. I have re-installed drivers, erased the drive, and re-installed the OS. I have also reset the SMC and PRAM, nothing seems to be working. If anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated as this is frustrating for me at the moment. Thanks in advance! Peace!

iMac 21.5-inch, Mid 2011(OX 10.8.5).
I call the repair shop and they told me it would coast $2000 to get it fix, they told me that my mother board was burn, so I send them an email telling them if my mother board was burn wouldnt be able to use my imac. I could get a new one for that price.

• Why am I not getting any input signal into logic X or GarageBand from my audio interface?

Hello all,
I'm completely new to all this so I will try my best here to give all the details needed.
So, I am using a Mac mini (2013 model: i7 overclocked at 2.6, 16 gbram) and a focusrite saffire pro 24DSP. Overall both are in perfect working order.
My problem, however, is that I am seemingly unable to get any form of signal from my saffire into either Logic X or GarageBand. I am trying to record guitar lined in and I have set all the settings in logic to what I think is right (software monitoring checked, output channels selected, saffire selected for both input and output) and I have set up my saffire mix control - I spent days reading the manual and watching online tutorials.
The saffire mix control is set up thus:
Input 1 - instrument
Daw 1+2 = GarageBand
Daw 3+4 = Logic X
Sample rate 41Khz
Master Output = stereo monitor mix (line outs 1 &2 to my monitor speakers)
Output 3+4 headphones
Is there anything missing here?
As far as this all goes, when I plug in my guitar I can get a very clear "raw" signal from the saffire mix control, but when I then go to set up a track in either DAW and assign the necessary line ins and outs, no matter what I do I cannot get an input signal, not even a partial one (I have the monitoring and record armed options checked btw). I am close to giving tearing my hair out.
I'm sure I am just missing something out?
Thanks in advance :-)

I've plugged into the interface a mic and an electric guitar.
I'm not sure what I did but the guitar is coming through (though it shows no signal on the interface). Mic input level on line, mic registers a tiny bit of sound when I hit the mic (on only one channel) but doesn't register any vocals when mic input is turned up to the max.
Odd thing: stereo/mono button reversed that is when the button is pushed in it equals stereo on the head phones when it says it should be mono and when the button is left unpushed it equals mono when it says it should be stereo.
Monitor is on and volume is at max.
GB system preferences don't list Input 1 or/and 2. Where do I find them?
I've tried everything I can think of. It feels as if I just need to find the right switch but I don't know where to look...

• GarageBand and M-Audio device

Sorry to ask the most basic of questions BUT, have just got the M-Audio 49e Key Station as a gift. Works great through GarageBand - but would work better if I could play it correctly. So am looking for a simple on screen tutorial to teach me to play the keyboard properly and ideally via GarageBand.
Would welcome any thoughts or guidance.

Playing a keyboard is not a good thing to learn on GarageBand. I would recommend, as I have done, getting Practica Musica and learn how to play the keyboard as a keyboard and then apply your knowledge to the keyboard by playing wha you now "know" in GarageBand. It is a painless program to use and you will definitely learn. I love Practica Musica and would recommend it to ANYONE wanting to LEARN to play a keyboard.
Anyse
