Garageband, Audacity, Soundtrack Pro Problem

When ever i try to boot any of these programs they all freeze and bring up error reports. I think my coreaudio driver is to blame. anyone know how to force update the coreaudio driver to reinstall it. or have anyother suggestions as to what maybe causing this. Thanks.

it turns out it was my waves plug-ins that were
causing it.
I'm having the same problem with GarageBand - first 2.0 and now 3.0.
How exactly did you resolve the issue?
I'm on Mac OS 10.4.3, (Pro Tools 7 installed along with Waves TDM plug-ins)
thanks,
Michael

  • Soundtrack Pro Problems?

Hello all, I'm having a problem with Soundtrack Pro and would like some help...
When using the PlatinumVerb Effect (Process>Effects>Reverb>PlatinumVerb), everything works fine in that sitting BUT when I export and leave the program only to then come back to that same Project File; I that find all of the PlatinumVerb Effects that are attached to individual tracks change back to their default settings for PlatinumVerb.
You can image the pain it causes to go back into the File and change X amount of tracks to only get it to the point where it should be when you open it. Please help me to understand why Soundtrack does this and how I am to avoid it.
    Thank you.

I've had a very good experience working with Soundtrack. It seems like your system has a problem. If you're interested in solving the problem, why don't you try a few things and post back to the list.. Someone here might have an idea for you!
First, Play the file using Quicktime Player to rule out a bad video file. If the video file does play back smoothly in Quicktime Player, there's likely something with your confiuration. Does audio play back smoothly, or does it skip around too? Do you get any performance warning dialogs while it's attempting to play?
Let us know what hardware you're using including any external audio and video devices. How much RAM do you have? Also, let us know what version of the OS and of Soundtrack Pro you're running.
Are you playing back video in the video window, or are you trying to use the video out on the preferences tab?
I'm confident you can get Soundtrack working smoothly.

  • Professional Podcast Recording - Soundtrack Pro

I'm looking to start recording a high-quality podcast to be featured in iTunes. Before I make my investment of hardware and software I wanted to get an opinion from the forums on Soundtrack Pro. Apple recommends Soundtrack Pro as it's preferred software for making professional podcasts. I'm looking for some opinions to validate this claim. I have a few questions about it myself:
    1. If you've used GarageBand is Soundtrack Pro easy to learn and use?
    2. Is it easy to create live podcasts in Soundtrack Pro? Meaning, can you make a podcast without a lot of post-production work?
    3. Along the lines of live podcasts, is it easy to have music and sound effects queued up to play during a live recording?
    4. Is there a better piece of software than Soundtrack Pro to accomplish what I'm looking to do?
Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

I'm Tee Morris and I'm one of the authors behind Podcasting for Dummies and Expert Podcasting Practices for Dummies. It was in my first year (2005) in podcasting I made the jump from GarageBand to Soundtrack Pro, and I have no regrets in doing so. While many of my podcasts are simple in their production, my podcast novels tend to be production heavy. I prefer them that way. Soundtrack Pro allows me a few extra features (and some post-production tools that are superior in performance) that GarageBand lacks.
This does not mean that I have completely abandoned GarageBand as an essential podcasting tool.
To address your questions one at a time...
    1. The learning curve between GB and STP is minimal at best. I was worried about that, too, but was recording within minutes of launching the application. There is a lot to STP and I feel as if I continue to learn new things about it. The jump is an easy one to make.
    2. Now that STP offers multitrack recording with verison 2 it is very easy to create live podcasts. As it is with any dramatic upgrade (and the change between STP 1.5 and STP 2 is a pretty big one), there are a few quirks. I am confident that STP is on the right direction. The multitrack recording ability is fantastic, and its features geared for podcasters are a real blessing. Exporting at mp3 is a touch slow (I've seen some "5 seconds remaining..." files take five minutes to export.), but still a nice upgrade from Apple.
    3. As far as playing live music and sound effects, I'm going to have to say STP takes a hit on that. To play live drop-in's in my podcasts, I have to rig up an audio loop from my speakers to the mixer board, and then use cart software (in my case, SoundByte) for the audio. It works. It would be nice to see STP come up with a cart interface similar to SoundByte but I would rather see the Enhanced Podcasting feature improved.
That is the other hit I think STP v2 suffers. It's promising Enhanced Podcasting features, and after several attempts and even a few checked resources, I am either still missing a step or the STP Enhanced Podcast features are not quite right. The images pop up fine in the m4a file, but none of the URL's embed. As it is a new feature for STP, the ability to incorporate images I find a bit clunky when compared to GarageBand. GB's ability to make Enhanced Podcasts stands head and shoulders above STP's and that is why we use it for our enhanced feed at Podcasting for Dummies.
    4. With the amount of production demands in my podcasts, I can't imagine NOT using STP. I've been very happy with it since 2006, continue to be happy with it, and look forward to the improvements coming in the future. I do wish they released it as a stand alone and think it a shame that many will not turn to STP for their podcasting solutions as it is bundled with the Final Cut Suite. That is a mistake on Apple's part. I find the FCS a worthwhile investment, but if you are not into video then you are wasting money.
That being said, I think GB is a better tool for Enhanced Podcasting, and always keep an eye and ear out for new software packages that offer something for what we do. In my experiences since 2005, I find Soundtrack Pro a must-have for audio professionals and high-production podcasters. Many third-party vendors, however, are working on some really cool stuff (ala Wire Tap Studio Pro) and Apple should stay on their game. The competition is out there.
Hope this answers your questions. Good luck!

  • Unexpected problem: uncaught exception when working with audio files in Soundtrack Pro

    Hey,
Whenever I double click an audio file in the timeline to work on it, I end up getting the Error message: "Unexpected problem: uncaught exception" and Soundtrack Pro eventually crashes.  Also, this happens when I try to work with audio files in the file editor.  I have Leopard and am using Logic Studio 8.  Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks
    Matt

Didnt know how to remove the original clip from the STP arrange window - or whatever it's called in STPro.  So I could go no further in my perverse science experiment.
It also appeared that I could only import an aif but not a wav?
I gave up on STPro and did what I needed to do in Logic, which I use regularly.
Thank you for folowing up on this.
PS.  I used to use an old PowerPC version (1.0.3) of STPro and loved the way it visually showed the change in the waveform when you added each efffect.  It appears that the new version (3.0.1) does not allow you to do this anymore?  You can render or flatten the effects to see the final waveform, but then you are dead in the water and cant make changes?
Im such a newbie at STPro that I am probably not using it right?

  • Problem sending to soundtrack pro

I am using FCP 5.1.4 and in my timeline I have a clip with bad audio that i want to clean up in soundtrack. I right-click the file and go to "send to.." "soundtrack pro audio file" is greyed out, but the multitrack option is not, so i tried the multitrack option. In soundtrack i cannot set noise print or anything in the multitrack file. If i disconnect the right and left channels I can send them one at a time to soundtrack and clean them up, but that is too time consuming after a while. How can I send a stereo file, clean up the noise, and have it appear in FCP? I know i have done it before, but for some reason it will not work now.
    Thank you for your help.

Okay... so now it's not working again.
This was after getting the message:
    Unable to render file
    when I tried to normalize.
Then STP froze up on me and I had to force quit.
Resent from FCP, then tried to double click on a track to open it up, and STP crashed on me.
This is about the 5th crash I've had this evening in STP.
Not sure what the problem is... maybe I need to re-install the OS. But that's not going to happen tonight.
Would be nice to know if others are having this problem or if it is just me?

  • Hi, I have small problem, for some time in music area I had two folders to use 1. Apple loops for soundtrack pro 2. Final Cut pro sound effects now both are gray and with out content may I know what happend

I just went through this and it appears that my Focusrite Saffire was the culprit. I connected all the outputs on the focusrite according to the way the jacsk on the back were labeled and then set up the multichannel speaker setup to match. Then I went into STP, created a pink noise clip and panned it around, the LFE, center and rears were not in the right place.
I reconnected the hardware to match the 5.1 pan pot in STP then changed the multichannel speaker setup to match. Everything appears to be correct now but I would have loved to have been able to just assigned the output busses to correct outputs in the saffire.
Next step is to pan that pink noise around with my SPL meter to calibrate the room.

  • URGENT-  I need help: Soundtrack Pro Freezing Problem!!

I just sent my FCP project to a multitrack project in Soundtrack Pro, but when i want to work on the Soundtrack Pro project, everything keeps freezing. its dead slow!
i can barely do anything with it!
whats the problem? and how can i solve it?

Couple of possibilities. One, your media files are huge. STP reference the entire media of a clip edited in FCP . . . not just the edited portion. That can result in some large files being brought over. Also, when you send a clip over, use the base layer option if you can, or export an mp4 to bring in to STP.
If you're ready to do the post audio work on a finished FCP project, export an omf file. Close FCP, then open the omf file in STP. That can help.
Other "obvious" but still good to review considerations . . . have enough RAM? Is there enough disk space? Are you using a different media drive than where the system is located?

  • TS2847 Soundtrack Pro 3.0 output problem

In Soundtrack Pro 3.0 the meters move but no sound comes out. I've tried removing the AU plug-ins to no avail.  Logic work just fine.  FCP X works fine. Has anyone had this problem and found a solution?

I am starting to think that what i ask cannot be done! The "in" point marks a cycle region in the project. Even if i make this region active and/or select that region, the export option still bounces the project from the beginning. It can only be done if i use the "trim in point to playhead" option through "clip" menu, because the project is obviously deleted from the beginning to that position.
I am stuck to a problem that should have a clearer way to do. Or am i missing something?
Again thanks for the immediate reply.

  • Audio scrubbing problem in Soundtrack Pro

Hi, new to this forum but not new to pro audio! I've been all round the houses trying to fix this one; hope somebody knows the answer.
The problem is that although FCP's audio works as expected through the AJA, Soundtrack Pro only outputs playback audio through it. Scrubbed audio outputs through the Mac's audio out and there doesn't seem to be anywhere to change it. With the way the edit suite's set up this means switching the monitoring selector just to hear scrubbing - not the best workflow arrangement!
The AJA device only seems to be recognised by Soundtrack Pro for video, not audio.
I'm using a Mac Pro 2 x 3 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with an AJA Io audio/video interface; OS is 10.5.8. I'm also using Final Cut Pro 7.01 and Soundtrack Pro 3.0.1
    Anybody got any ideas?
    Thanks, Doug.

I'm using a Kona 3 in a quad core and it works in all aspects of I/o.
16 tracks in and out and mixing and monitoring in stereo and surround. And yes, I have a proper surround monitoring setup.
I suspect it's the I/o box itself. Maybe, because its outboard it isn't setup to handle that kind of monitoring. Did you ask AJA?

  • Soundtrack Pro / Flash problems

Since installing Soundtrack Pro, I have had problems with Macromedia Flash.
I installed Soundtrack Pro yesterday and imported MP3 voice-over files for correction & improvement and saved them as .aiff files for import into a Flash .FLA file on my MacBook Pro.
On importing the files, Flash began to behave strangely - notably, impossible to play the .FLA file to check it (file works OK when published to an .SWF file). Also, Flash refuses to import .WAV files created in Soundtrack Pro.
However, Flash works OK on a G4, where I have not installed Sountrack.
I have tried repairing permissions / deleting the Flash preferences file / reinstalling Flash... but these have no effect.
I would be grateful for any help/suggestions.
    Best regards,
    Garry

Thanks for the reply. I discovered what the stuttering problem in Soundterack was myself, by running around the Internet doing searches. It turns out that these G5 quad-core Macs have a defect in their optical ports on the back of the case. Light leaks in there and causes problems in Soundtrack. It can be cured by plugging both ends of a toslink cable into the ports, to prevent light from getting in there. One of these little cables only costs a few dollars on Amazon.com. I bought one and plugged it in, and the problem disappeared. Soundtrack now works smoothly.
It's too bad that programs such as Final Cut 7 and Soundtrack were simply abandoned by Apple, and declared obsolete and irrelevant, because they can still do excellent work. I have another, Intel Mac with the latest (as of last summer) Adobe suite on it, including Adobe Premiere, and yet I can do many things better in Final Cut than I can in Premiere (for one thing, Premiere can only open one project at at time. On my current video project in Final Cut 6, I have three projects open at the same time and am moving clips between them easily). However, now that Adobe has moved to rental versions of their software, my copy of Premiere is also obsolete, and gets no updates or improvements, just like Final Cut 7.
So I'm making my videos on my obsolete Mac G5 using obsolete software, Final Cut 6 and Soundtrack. I guess I'll remain a defiant holdout for as long as I can.

  • I have Soundtrack Pro 1.1 It opens OK but the everything takes 4 seconds to work. It's very slow and unusable. Is this a well known problem?

I have Soundtrack Pro 1.1 It opens OK but the everything takes 4 or so seconds to work. It's very slow and unusable in its present state. Is this a well known problem?

STP 3.0.1 was the version designed to work with OSX 10.6.8. Anything earlier than that and issues may arrise. Hard to tell what yours are.
You may want to run Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager to reset the prefs back to the default state. If nothing else, it is a good troubleshooting step.
    Good luck.

  • Audio sync problem: exporting from FCP to Pro tools or soundtrack pro

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Final Cut Pro sound export for mastering.....sync problem
    Hey,
I'm editing a 30 minute film and I have done most of the sound edit in FCP and Soundtrack pro and I want to now bring all the sound into pro tools to master the sound but every time i export sound into pro tools it seems to stretch by two or three seconds.
I have tried OMF, AIFF, XML, and Quicktime audio file sut to no avail!!!!
There are 50 tracks in the file so it is quiet large. It's not that there are handles of the file also as when I sync the file with the audio track with the video it syncs in one place but it is still out of sync in another.........It's as if the audio has been stretched!?!
If anyone has any advice it'd be much appreciated
    Keith

Try mixing down the audio first. Sequence/Render Only/Audio mixdown.
You could even try exporting the audio with the Export QT movie command using "current settings" and reimport that file, Add that mixed down file to a copy of the sequence. If it syncs in FCP I'd think it will sync on export too.

  • Tascam US-144mkII Causing Problems in Soundtrack Pro 3.0.1

Just got a Tascam US-144mkII, as recommended by the Apple site, to use with Soundtrack Pro 3. So far, though, it's causing a problem - while I can hear audio that I'm playing and I can monitor that sound through the Tascam, the cursor won't move when I record and if I try to play any loops, I get an error - a CNSExceptionWrarpper?. If I unplug the Tascam, everything works fine.
    I'm using the latest driver - 2.0.
Any suggestions on how I can get this thing working would be greatly appreciated...

You're right. It wasn't recommended. I should've said it is supported.

Anyone with any suggestions, I'd still love some insight into this.

  • What does GarageBand have that Soundtrack Pro doesn't?

I'd like to see an up-to-date list of functionality that is available in GarageBand but not in Logic Pro or Soundtrack Pro. Can anyone direct me to such a list already on-line, or name some items? I've seen the old "STP - Logic - GarageBand Compatibility" thread, but it doesn't seem to give the detail I need.
    Thanks.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Logic has everything
    that GB has even more.
Actually, that isn't true. As mlehmann said, Logic doesn't let you add podcast artwork.
I also believe GB has a feature that automatically records and compiles ichat sessions, with each participant on a separate track.
