Garageband Compound Time Rhythm (9/8)

I notice that when you put a piece in 6/8 it can register that this rhythm is compound time and puts the emphasis in the correct spot, however when putting the piece in 9/8, Garageband reacts as if I have asked to put it in simple time and therefore plays it straight with the emphasis all in the wrong spot. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a piece in 6/8 with one blasted bar in 9/8 so I've been trying to record the drum rhythm separately - this has been a real pain because the drummer emphasis is stuck to the overall framework of the piece so that once you start half way through the bar, the drumming sounds off-kilter, but now I have come across this other problem where I cannot even get the right emphasis for the compound time signature.

Logic has never had the ability to provide a dotted-quarter click for use with compound time sigs. Strange, but true. Even in the 21st century they haven't seen fit to "fix" this long-standing omission.
You have two workarounds:
1) create your own dotted-quarter click track by assigning the klopfgeist to a track and recording dot quarters (1 measure's worth, then enable the loop parameter on the region)
2) go to this link where you can download a Logic project with a custom environment I made which provides a dotted-quarter click. Be sure to read through the thread and download the latest version (towards the end) where you can select 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8 using a menu:

  • How do you set up tempo for compound time signatures? ie if I have a song that starts in 4/4 then goes to 12/8 but I want the same tempo

Logic doesn't let you set a bpm based on a compound time signature
So for 12/8 it gives the tempo for the 8s not for the dotted 4s
In order to get Logic to deal with this, I had to manually increase the tempo from say 90 for 4/4 to 135 for 12/8
    Am I missing something?
    Thank you
    David

    Hi
Yep... Logic's tempo display in the Transport etc. is always based on 1/4 notes (crochets), regardless of time signature.
You can get the "correct" tempo to display in the Score by using "dotted crochet=" or "quaver=" symbols, which may help with the necessary tempo calculations.

  • How to get new project page on opening garageband every time?

sorry if this has been asked a million times before, but is there a way to get garageband to come up with the page asking me to make a new project every time i open it (rather than taking me to the last one opened)?
i work at a college and stuidents share machines and use a generic "student" account, so if they use garageband they will open it up and the last person's project will open up automatically (which may not be theirs). occasionally it just comes up with the "make new project" page. can't find anything in preferences.
    any ideas?

it'll work if you can get each last student to close their work ... easier said then done, usually. good luck!

  • Compound time signatures and the metronome in GB 09

    Hi,
    Two questions.
    1) Is there any way to set up a project in GB09 with a 6/8 time signature, where the metronome beat is a dotted quarter note (dotted crochet) equal to say 48 bpm?
    2) Can a backing track (not midi) loaded as a Real Instrument be somehow "synched" with the GB metronome?
    Thanks

    1) The metronome will always count the units of the time signature, in this case six eigth notes. If you want a different metronome, create your own click track using a drum set!
    2) Sure. There's several methods to do that, and everybody has his own. I understand that you want to set the project's tempo to that of the imported audio. The easiest way is to count the beats per minute (or in 30 seconds and multiply by two) and then fine tune the song's tempo until it syncs perfectly. (It might never sync perfectly since GB only supports integer number bpms.)

  • Inputting ususual time signature

Hi- I like to write using 332 or 323 ( quavers )rhythms but I haven't yet succeeded in changing the key signature in the Transport bar so that when I input music (via keyboard) the quaver groupings looks correct in the Score Editor.
    Can this be done ?
    Thanks, Kay.

You can't use the transport bar to enter compound time sigs. But if you were to enter 8/4 in the transport bar, you can modify it after the fact by 2-clicking on that sig either in the score editor or the global time sig track and then enter the beat grouping (shown below).
You can also enter time sigs directly in the global time sig editor track (pencil tool) or go into the score editor itself, select the "A+B" signature and enter your beat groupings. In any event, just be sure to check the "print compound" checkbox.

  • I own and work on two Mac computers.. a MacBook Pro and an iMac. Am I required to "purchase" the one-time in-App purchase of $4.99 TWICE, one for each computer..??

I own and work on two Mac computers.. a MacBook Pro (dual core, 3.06GHz, 8 GBs RAM) and an iMac ((dual core, 3.06GHz, 4 GBs RAM). Am I required to "purchase" the Garageband one-time in-App purchase of $4.99 TWICE, one for each computer..??

The answer to your question is not about the GarageBand content but the concept of downloading any apps (or in-apps purchases) from the app store. The Key is your Apple ID.
Whenever you download an app (it doesn't matter if you pay for the app or if it is free) you have to to be logged in to the App Store with a valid Apple ID. That becomes your "Online License". Whenever you are logged in to the App Store with that Apple ID you will see your Purchase History, what apps you downloaded and also what apps have updates available. As you see, this procedure is independent from your actual computer. The App Store is only interested in your Apple ID for verification.
To download an app or content on a different computer, just make sure you are logged in to the App Store with the same Apple ID you did for the initial purchase.
The button will now display (instead of Free or the price tag) "Install" because the App Store knows that you purchased the item before (with that Apple ID) and that you computer you are on at the moment oesn't have th app installed. Just click the "Install" button to download the app.
Here is how the Button looks like depending on the condition.
The same principle applies to in-app purchases. With GarageBand, when you try to restore Purchases, make sure you are logged in in the Apple Store with the Apple ID you made the original purchase.
One more thing: You don't need to be logged in to actually run an app, only for online activities (downloads, updates)
    Hope that helps

  • Garageband wont import song from iTunes

Hi,  I've imported songs from iTunes to Garageband many times by just selecting and dragging the song from iTunes into the GarageBand application window.  Not sure why... but now that does not work--GarageBand is not accepting the song when I drag it over.  Help!  I'm using iTunes 10.6.3 and GarageBand 4.1.2.
Update--just saw posting from HangTime with  link to instructions to highlight song in iTunes, select "Show in Finder" from the iTunes File pull-down menu, and then drag the song into the Garageband window from the Finder.  It worked. Just wondering (now) why GarageBand is not allowing me to simply drag a song into Garageband directly from iTunes.

Thank you for posting that 'update' Kingpalm. It just solved my (same) problem, today 1st January 2014!

*I purchased Mac Pro recently about 3 weeks ago. I am on the latest updates including the recent firmware update. However whenever I use garageband with external USB mic(Blue Snowball) my Kernel Panics and OS freezes and forces me to Power On again. It happened 20 times so far in few hours.*
*I opened garageband first time today after bought this external mic from apple store. I did not use garageband without this mic plugged into USB, I only used garageband with MIC plugged in and in couple of minutes to 5 minutes of using garageband the Kernel Panic occurs. Need your help please. Here is the message I get after login again which I reported consistently to Apple. Any immediate help is appreciated. I use iMove, iPhoto and other apps without any problem. Harddisk verification went o.k.*

I've been getting a number of kernel panics when using USB Mics with Skype, though I have not experienced any crashes when using Garageband.
The crash report cited the AppleUSBAudio driver as the culprit. Here's the set up:
    MacBookPro Core2 2.66 15"
    Mac OS X 10.5.2
Blue Snowflake USB Mic, Blue Snowball USB Mic
    Skype (latest rev - 2.7.0.257)

Seems to be a lot of crashiness with USB Audio in 10.5.2 - let's hope we see a patch soon

  • Garageband on my iphone will not allow saving to iCloud. I have GarageBand 1.2.1

Garageband on my iphone will not allow activation of icloud. I continually get an error message that 'you have not set up iCloud on this device, close garageband open the settings app and sign in to iCloud.' i am signed in. I have GarageBand 1.2.1
I have uninstalled and reinstalled GarageBand many times,
I can't share between iPhone and iPad which is really frustrating.
Is it an iCloud bug or a GarageBand bug?
    Any ideas?

I have the same message!  I just got a new iPad yesterday, to replace an old one.  I also just bought $40 worth of extra iCloud storage space, and my iCloud from within GarageBand on my iPad won't work at all!!!  It keeps saying the same message you stated above.  I have been on the phone for literally hours with Apple iPad support on the phone yesterday and today, and it's still NOT FIXED.
    APPLE, PLEASE HELP??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • No signal from line in in Garageband, though okay in OSX!

My line in jack is clearly working in OSX - in System Preferences/Sound, the "Line In" input meter reads my guitar as I play it, with a good signal strength. In Garageband however, no matter what I've chosen in Sys Prefs, all "Real Instruments" activate the built-in microphone ONLY. I have used Garageband many times on a powerbook (G4) successfully, plugging a guitar directly into the line in jack. Yes, the gain is a little bit low, but is fine, and I've recorded plenty of guitar based music (indeed Apple suggests such a direct connection in their literature).
The problem just seems that Garageband is not switching over to line in when I switch it with the operating system. I cannot get the internal mic off. Help! Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Kip

I wish the software's help file mentioned this as clearly as you! They seem to suggest doing it only with Sys Prefs (see below). Thanks.
"You can connect an electric musical instrument or microphone to your computer and record it in a Real Instrument track. There are several ways to connect instruments and microphones to your computer.
To connect an electric musical instrument or a microphone to your computer:
If your computer has an audio input port, you can connect a microphone or an electric instrument to it. When using the audio input port, be sure to set sound input to "Line in" in your computer's Sound preferences. Open System Preferences, click Sound, click the Input button in the Sound pane, select "Line In" in the sound input list, then drag the Input volume slider to set the input level.
You can connect an audio interface to your computer, then connect instruments and microphones to the audio interface for recording. Audio interfaces are available in a variety of compatible formats, including USB, FireWire, PCI, and PC card formats. When using an audio interface, be sure to choose the interface from Audio/MIDI pane of GarageBandPreferences.
You can also connect an audio mixer or console to your computer, and record microphones or instruments through the mixer.
If you use an audio interface to connect musical instruments, check the manufacturer’s specifications to make sure the interface is compatible with Mac OS X 10.2.6 or later. Also make sure the audio interface uses a format supported by your computer. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, which may include installing the correct driver on your computer."

  • Audio line-in input won't work

    Hello,
have used Garageband several times in the past, and have had no problems setting the input as audio line-in to record my guitar. However, I tried again for the first time in a couple of years the other day and neither my Powerbook or my iMac would allow me to do it. In System Preferences, the audio line-in input option was not in the drop-down menu. I could only choose iSight or built-in microphone.
I don't think it is the mini-jack adapter that I am using that is the problem. It hasn't been damaged as far as I can see and fits in the socket fine. I tried it in the headphones socket and it clicks in place there and registers in the system preferences. Has there been some kind of bug in a recent(ish) update that has killed audio line-in inputs?
Am running Leopard on PowerPc processors. Realise that the tide has turned against these two computers and that they will need replacing in the next year or two.
    Any help massively appreciated ...

Did you see the fix for this problem and did you try it?  I use to do a lot of direct line in recording with my guitar and now I have the same problem. I won't be able to try to fix till tonight. I am in Oregon.  So I was just curious if you got a solution.
Cause I am kind of ****** about this.
    I would appreciate you feedback!
    Thanks
    Mat

  • IWeb not recognizing podcast exported from Garage band

I've been sending my podcasts to iWeb for over a year. I used to host my site on MobileMe but switched to a WordPress site through GoDaddy last year. Regardless, I've always continued to send my podcast to the old iWeb site and pinged iTunes from there. Have had no issues doing so.
When the podcast exports, iWeb has always prompted me/asked me which "blog" page I want to use for the new podcast. (Naturally, I chose my "podcast" page as the old site had multiple pages). Now, iWeb is not prompting that option, essentially not acknowledging that there is new content being exported in.
Any ideas where the disconnect might be? I've redone the share/send podcast to iWeb process from GarageBand 5 times with no success.

Did you ever figure out the answer? I am having the same problem.
