Garageband Effects Produce Hiss

Hi,
I'm running Garageband 1.1.0. I'm playing an analog guitar and using Griffin's iMic to convert analog to digital.
Whenever I use any of Garageband's guitar effects I get a loud hiss. If I click on "No Effects" or "Clean" I don't get any hiss. Is this a software defect? If so, is it fixed in the current version of Garageband?
Thanks.
G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I find that "hiss" arises when I am digitizing old analog tapes. I eliminate most of it (during quiet passages) by using a combination of Gate and Equalization. These are available to you after double clicking on the Track header. Go for Gating first as Equalization will change the sound of your recording.

  • After reverting back to Garageband 6.0, I find that I still lack all the Garageband Effects (Distortion, Vocal Transformer, etc.). The Garageband 10 "AU" plug ins are there instead. I need help getting the old effects back.

For background: I lost my v6 because I had to reformat my whole hard drive. When I reformatted I lost GB and everything else I had. I downloaded GB (unaware of the awfulness that is v10) from the App Store. The fact that v10 does not have all my favorite and most used effects from v6, I uninstalled v10 and redownloaded v6 from my App Store Purchases. I load up v6 only to find that all the default effects are there for each instrument, but when I go to add an effect (i.e. Distortion, Vocal Transformer, Flanger, etc.), instead of the list of classic effects, there's the list of awful AU effects from v10. What gives?!

For me, the "Edit" panel in GB6.0.5 looks like this:
Are you saying, that the upper part with "GarageBand Effects" is missing?
Then check, what is installed in your System Library in the folder
    /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/
(the topmost "Library" folder on your Hard Drive.
You may need to restore the old GarageBand effects and Track settings files from your backup:
    i.e look into the folder /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Plug-In Settings/
and restore the settings for Chorus, Flanger, Vocal Transformer, Tremolo, whatever effects you are missing.
And also look for missing files in "Track Settings" folder and "Sampler" folder.
What kind of backup do you have? If you have a Time MAchine backup, go back in time to the time before you upgraded to GB 10.

I don’t have this issue, but I am looking to learn about which parts of the old GarageBand can safely migrate to the new GarageBand 10.
(Personally, I like most of what changed in the new version.  I sorely miss a few features, and I submitted some detailed feedback.  If you think similarly—or if you hate the new version like babygotbackup—do the GarageBand community a favor, and send in your own feedback!  From the menu, select GarageBand ▶︎ Provide GarageBand Feedback.)

  • Imovie/Garageband - Effects dont come through on isight recording

So im recording via iSight into iMovie while playing my guitar via GarageBand. Everything is great except when i play it back - iMovie has stripped out all the effects in the audio (flange, delay, etc) are completely gone and all i am heard to be playing is naked guitar into GB.
    Help?
    Thanks

I had the same problem. It sounds great while you're recording but it's an illusion of sorts. All that I-Movie is actually recording is the input (pre- Garageband) of your guitar. You need to get GB and I- Movie recording just as you have. Then before your actual GB mix starts to play make a loud sudden hand clap. The hand clap will show up as a large waveform 'spike' both in GB and I-Movie. Okay? After you're done, go to the mix you created in Garageband. Click on 'track' in the upper edit area (file, edit, track, control etc) and enable 'show movie track'. This will open the movie track at the top of your arrange window in GB. Click on the 'media browser' tab bottom right of same screen. You will have the option to open the movie you just created. Click on the thumbnail of that movie and drag it to the 'movie track' you just enabled in Garageband. You will now see the movie with it's cleanaudio AND the Garageband mix with your guitar sounding the way you want. Look for that hand clap spike you made just before your mix started. Line that up with your movie 'spike' and you will be in perfect sync! Then, just mute the clean track in your movie audio and let Garageband be the soundtrack. It works like a charm. ~King

  • Want to hook up my laptop with guitar amp to hear garageband effects

I have a MBP (early 2008) and use garageband with a blue snowflake microphone and headphones to record. However, I was wondering if it would possible to have my laptop hooked up to my Marshall MG10 CF amp when I am in garageband just messing around with the many effects that it offers and having the effects from my guitar come out the amp speaker (without having to use headphones. I hope my explanation is clear.

You should be able to use a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter to plug the guitar into the audio input on your mac.  Then run the audio output to your amps guitar input or it's mp3 player input.

  • How can i use a garageband effect on a live microphone while recording?

hi, i am recording a vocal track on garageband, using an m-audio fast track, does anyone know how i can use the effects of gb, so that i can hear them in my earphones while i am recording???  thank you!

Make sure you have GarageBand,s output set to what you have your headphone plugged into.
And turn on monitoring for the track.

  • Garageband Effects Pedal

Hi, I came out with this idea of building an application for the iPhone that turns your device into an "Effects Pedal" for your instrument (guitar, bass etc). You can export the Effects that you create in GB to your iPhone and then insert your phone to a console that has couple of pedals to control the effects.
Could anybody tell me if there is something similar out there, you can minimize and have all sort of effects pedals in one single device.
    pdr*

All 10 pedals can be set with the same controls as it's real pedal counterpart. The different amp models have the same basic controls as the amp they simulates. You can even set compression and EQ and add a Garageband or other AU and can even create your own presets.
Of course the sims and FX don't sound like thousands of dollars worth of amps and FX but they are available.
But if you're using your Digiboard FX you probably don't want the Garageband sims also.

  • "Sharpen" effect produces white rectangle around the frame?

I've been noticing this behaviour in CC 7.1.
When you place "Sharpen" and some third party plugin (Sapphire, NewBlue, BorisFX, ...) the 1 pixel wide rectangle starts to appear around the frame.
    Is it a bug?

Remove 3rd party effect from clip, see how that works.
Or try nesting first then apply sharpen.

    Hi @kv_laldika
Welcome to the HP Community! I saw your post regarding the problems with the static and hissing heard through your headphones. Does this occur when you play sound normally from the speakers? What about if you try a different set of headphones? What is the product number for your Pavilion? There are a number of different models in that series.

  • Help with the garageband effects!

Once I go to Track info, if I double click on Vocals>male basic it takes me to a screen that shows noise gate, master echo, and master reverb. I wanna go back to the original track info screen and change it to megaphone but it won't let me go back. What's the solution?

  • ACR 4: Fill Light and Recovery producing halo effect in CS3

When adjusting Fill Light or Recovery in ACR 4, I'm getting an outlining effect in contrasty areas of some images. Happens with both RAW and DNG files.

    David,
In case you are still monitoring this discussion, I also have experienced these halos whilst using Lightroom to edit Tif files which are both under and overexposed in the same image - that is, they are very contrasty. This experience has been subsequent to the release of both CS3 and Lightroom - which both use the ACR 4 engine, as I understand it. From my observations, the halos result from using a combination of too much Fill and Recovery but seem more influenced by Recovery than Fill. I have thought that this is not unexpected, and is therefore probably not a bug, as there must be a natural limit to how much of an overly contrasty image that you can rescue. I have been able to minimise (but not completely eliminate) the halo effect by judicious use of added Exposure in lieu of some Fill (to recover at least partially some of the underexposed regions) and a reduced amount of Recovery - and just accepting that all the highlights might not be as optimally enhanced as desired. Perhaps the halo effect produced by these wonderful tools may be further reduced in subsequent releases of CS3(ACR4) and Lightroom - a possibility hinted at by Jeff Schewe in his reply to your post.

  • "Illegal Sequence" message: GarageBand won't open, possibly due to corrupted files

GarageBand recently crashed while trying to save a particularly long composition, around 200 bars long at the time, but it's been laggy since it exceeded around 60 bars. Recently, while saving the song, the app suddenly crashed. Now, whenever I open the app, it attempts to load the song and a prompts me with a pop-up message that says "Illegal Sequence (1)" with the option to either "Repair" or "Quit." Neither option appears to have any effect, and after hitting either of them a few times, the app will crash again.
I have a feeling that some files have become corrupted, and I fear that I will not be able to recover this song. It's the only lengthy composition that I never backed up to iCloud, and I am beside myself for being so careless with a project that I have put over 48 hours into. If I could at least get GarageBand to open to the menu so that I can backup the song to iCloud or email it to myself, the problem would be virtually solved. Even if that didn't work, I could at least have some resolution.
I'm using GarageBand Version 1.4.1 (180.17) on an iPhone 4 running on iOS 6, because I'm one of those people who hated iOS 7 the moment I saw it and refused to update.
If anyone has any idea how to fix this, please help. This happened about an hour ago, and it is destroying me.

    Hi,
I just had this same issue on my MacBook Pro.  I was able to recover the real instrument audio that I had recorded and saved previously, but not the MIDI.  Hopefully someone can help
Here's what happened: I was saving a composition of about 130 measures, and instead of saving, all of my recorded tracks went blank.  They were still in the right places, but none of them made any sound when I hit play.  I tried reverting to the saved version, but that just brought up a completely blank file.  No recorded tracks, no instruments, nothing.  [picture below]
I tried reopening the file, and I got the same message you did, "Illegal Sequence (1)" with options to 'Repair' or 'Quit'.  Repair brought up the blank Garageband document as above. "Quit" made garageband crash, producing some sort of divide by zero error in com.apple.main, but my Garageband often crashes instead of quitting so that could be a separate issue.
However, I was able to recover all of the recorded audio that I had saved previously (!!).  To anyone else out there with the same problem, just control-click on the damaged Garageband file and choose "Show Package Contents" from the drop down menu.  You'll then see a folder with the components of the Garageband file.  Any audio recordings you've made will be in the Media folder, and you can make a new Garageband file and drag and drop them in.
I haven't found where the MIDI sequences are stored, and I lost the last 15 minutes of audio I had recorded. Does anyone know if there's a way to recover them?
    I'm using Garageband Version 6.0.5 (428.5) on a 13-inch late 2011 MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.5
Thanks for any help anyone can give!

  • Stutter Edit plugin by iZotope. Is it compatible with GB11 AU EFFECTS?

    http://izotope.com/products/audio/stutteredit/index.asp
Now, you probably know that Stutter Edit will work with Apple Logic.
However the question for a GarageBand 11 user is: Will Stutter Edit be able to send MIDI to Garageband Effects?
Yes, you can send MIDI signals to Garageband's Instruments, but sending MIDI to its AU Effects may be an entirely different matter.
Has anyone (reading this post) used Stutter Edit with Garageband 11?
    Please, FACTS ONLY. No guessing.

TMPEG is still top notch and has a sensible price (though it seems their support for BluRay/H.264 has made it less stable and a bit buggy). The pro-version even allows you post-encode profiling and matrix adjustments.... Short of that, ProCoder LE or Sorenson Squeeze of course. Regarding the bitrate discussion: As said before, this depends more than anything else on the type of content. Evenly lit and colored footage, that is not moving too fast will not show much difference between VBR and CBR, that is true. High contrast items with lots of edits and fast moves however will due to the allocation scheme. In general it is better to keep a somewhat tight leash as it enforces the analysis algorithm to act smarter, so e.g. a full 7.5 MBit/sec may result in a uniform visible grid, but 4 Mbit/sec may produce a larger number of smaller P and B frame blocks which are less visible. Our trusted specs are all in the 5Mbit/sec average data rate, with 3.5 for the minimum and 6 as the ceiling (as some of our DVDs have up to 12 foreign language audio tracks that need room). As usual - a short test run with e.g. 2 or 3 minute samples is the only reliable way to find the perfect setting for a given project. No need to feel bad or amateurish about it - even we occasionally still encode many hours worth of footage several times to find the right settings, and we've been producing DVDs ever since 1998... It's perfectly normal.
