Garageband erased all aiff files of recordings made!!!

Hi there,
I spent a few hours on garageband simply recording some audio over the internal mic. Some of it I recorded normally, some in loop mode. Then I edited it, cut out what I didn't want and also deleted whole tracks with some audio on it. After all the editing I had around 6 tracks with mainly short audio loops in it (made from these recordings earlier on).
I then saved the project. Then quit. Then put my computer to sleep.
3 minutes later I woke it up again, opened the same file in Garageband I'd previously been working on. Then all I got were error messages telling me one after the other, that all the aiff-files from the various recordings could not be found. I tried the "search" button, but that never found anything.
I opened the file and all my loops were there in form, but the audio was not there, i.e. couldn't play any of it.
I opened the package contents of the GB file and the media folder was empty. The file's size is 1.1MB.
This seems to be a huge bug. This has never happened to me before. It was the first time using Garageband on Snow Leopard. And possibly the first time using Garageband 09 at all (I've used older versions frequently).
Has noone else had this happen? It makes me nervous ****. I'd have to save, quit and reopen all the time to make sure the audio data is still there.
Looking forward to your comments.
JAD

Hey there Alphaspin,
Sorry to hear you had the same thing happen to you.
BUT AT THE SAME TIME I'm very happy to see someone confirm my problem. It's a first step on the way to freeing that poor little bug from GB, I'm assuming. (you hear that, Apple? Don't be too vicious with the poor thing. It's not its fault!)
As a note to various people above who were hypothesizing my failure to save the file properly.
I understand your scepticism, but think about this. If I hadn't saved the file properly (before quitting - as I remember well - or during the quitting process), why would all the loops still be shown in my tracks in the Garageband file? I don't see how that could possibly happen if the file wasn't in some way "saved".
What I see in the file I referenced in my first post, is everything exactly in the state I left it when I quit it, except for all the loops not playing because GB can't find the original aiff files in it's project file any more (because they've apparently been deleted during the quitting process).
Anyhow, I hope more people will find this post and confirm our experiences. Probably they won't find it before the ** hits the fan, unfortunately. It's all a learning experience as always. Just in this case backing up doesn't help diddly-squat. You can seemingly save it to as many HDs as you wish - if GB deletes the aiff files in the project, they're lost in multiple places at once
morale of the story: I will not use GB until I see this addressed and fixed and I can test it with some post-modern classical junk music. (because I don't feel like going back to leopard - which might fix the problem for the moment).

  • How do I erase ALL the files on my MacBook Pro?

I've just gotten a new MacBook Air and successfully migrated all my data from my MacBook Pro. Now I'd like to clean up my MacBook Pro for my son. I don't want to erase all the applications, but I do want to erase all my files. Is there an easy way to it?

Easiest thing to do is create a new Admin account, login using that account, then delete your old Admin & user accounts. All your apps will still be present, but your user data & files will be gone.

    Forget the Pendrive stategy...
Before attempting any Major Upgrade... get yourself an External Hard Drive... and create a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive...
By far the easiest way to make such a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade,
    you will NOT LOSE ANYTHING.
(Get an EHD that is at least equal to your current Drive...)
Also, Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using...

You should also consider more RAM... Get the Maximum you can for your Mac...
It is important to get the Correct and Matching RAM

  • I want to erase all my files on my old MacBook Pro but not lose the applications.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro Retina.  I was to erase all my files off my old MacBook Pro and give it to my cousin.  However, I don't want to lose the programs, like Microsoft Office, because I don't have the disks to reinstall them.  Anyone know how to erase everything but not lose the applications? Or do I just go manually through each file and delete?

What i would do is wipe the computer by going into recovery mode, then erasing the HD and formating it to Mac osx extended(journaled) then reinstall the operating system. After this is complete, just download a trial of office and enter your product key so you won't need the disk. But if you don't have the product key either then you would have to manually delete everything.

  • My time capsule erased all my files, is it possible to recover any of it?

My time capsule erased all my files, is it possible to recover any of it?

None of free or lower priced utilities will get the files back. Disk Warrior might be able to get into the drive.
    http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
If still no luck, you will need to look into having a professional data restoration service try to get the files.
Unfortunately, no guarantees with either approach above since Disk Utility was unable to repair things and the file structure is likely corrupted.
    Good luck in your quest.

  • I have an i mac and if I go to Finder and all my files it has made hundred of photos from the faces of virtually all the photos I have on the computer, how do I stop this happening ?

I have an i mac and under images in  All My Files it has made hundreds of face photos from all my pictures in i photos, how can I stop this ?

Hmmm, so it's taking new pics all the time?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for pic problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • If you reinstall Mac OSX 10.5, does it erase all your files and settings??

If you reinstall Mac OSX 10.5, does it erase all your files and settings, if it does, how would you install iMovie by itself, because I accidenatlly deleted imovie

    jd087 wrote:

that depends what reinstall option you choose. an erase and install will erase everything. an archive and install will preserve user data and applications.
However neither one will reinstall imovie which is part of ilife which is separate from the OS itself. you can reinstall ilife only. there is no need to reinstall the whole OS. if you bought ilife separately then use the ilife DVD. if ilife came with your mac then insewrt install disk 1 that came with your computer, open it in finder and double-click on "install bundled software only".

If you're upgrading through the App Store, no, it will not. However, always best to run a backup before doing any major upgrade.

  • My iPod touch is disabled, it says to connect to iTunes and I did but it is still disabled! How do I get it not to be disabled without also erasing all my files and data in my iPod?

I really need help with this, my iPod was disabled by my brother and I don't know how to get it back to normal again. I connected it to iTunes and it still shows up there with all my songs. However, the iPod itself is not working. I've tried multiple things but I don't want my data to be erased so im a bit cautious about what to do. Also, it would help if someone could explain what exactly happens when an iPod is 'restored' 'restored mode' or in 'recovery mode'. If someone could help me it'd be much appreciated. Thanks

    You need to restore.
Everything should be on your computer, so you can just sync it back.

  • Update 12.1.1.4 erased all my files (music, videos, playlists, everything). How do I revert to earlier version to get that back?

I opened iTunes tonight to import a CD and it asked me to update. Sure, fine, go ahead. Computer restarts after update and EVERYTHING is gone. I had 20+ videos, over 3k songs, all sorted into playlists, podcasts... it's all gone. How do I get that back? Can I uninstall the update and go back to the earlier version of iTunes? And when I plug in my iPad to sync, will it wipe everything off of there, as well??? I'm a fitness instructor, I have over a year's worth of playlists and routines that are now gone.

You're welcome .  Note, though, that iTunes doesn't really keep "backup files" - it does replicate the library database (iTunes Library.itl) during the installation of an update if (and only if) that update makes a change to the database structure.  The most recent of these was the transition from iTunes 11.4 to iTunes 12.0.  On the basis that:
Computers tend to fail at the least convenient moment
Hard drives fail. Always. You just don't know when its going to happen
There is no process that can be 100% guaranteed not to mess with your data
creating and maintaining a backup of your iTunes library is just about essential. See tt2's notes on Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy for details of a suitable method.  If you make frequent additions or changes to your library you should refresh the backup every couple of days - at a minimum I'd suggest once a week - and always make sure that the backup is up to date before installing a new version of iTunes.  I actually use two backup strategies - one that runs automatically at 3am every Sunday morning, plus as-needed updates to a second external drive that I use to refresh two other systems that I run iTunes on.

  • I de-commissioned my previous computer and erased all my files without deactivating Premiere elements first installed on my replacement computer. I now have a laptop with elements installed but cannot activate it because it supposedly is already installed

How can i activate the copy on my laptop without re-purchasing?

Activating the program is different, depending on which version of the program you're using -- and you don't say which version of the program you're using.
The program allows for two activations of the program at a time. If you've already used one activation on your new defunct computer, you'll need to contact Adobe Tech Support, explain the situation and have them release one of your activations. (Note that this is a user-to-user forum, so we aren't able to do this. You'll need to contact Adobe Tech Support.)

You go to Control Panel, click Uninstall a program, on the left side click View installed updates. AFAIK every updates creates a restore point so you can restore to a time before the update is to be installed.

  • Why Presenter erase all MP3 when Powerpoint crash ???

I want to know why Presenter erase all MP3 files if Powerpoint crash ?
    step by step...
1- Someone came in my studio and record his presentation.  I took him 2 hours.
2- When finish, I click "save" and close the recording windows.
3- Back in Powerpoint, I click the save button of Powerpoint... and... Powerpoint crash.
4- In windows explorer, I see the Powerpoint and the folder create by Adobe Presenter for the audio files with all the MP3 in that folder.
            -"Yes, everything is there"
5- I re-open the Powerpoint of the client.
6- Click on modify to see if all the audio are there
    7- Haaaaaaaaa, no audio.
-"Ok, I just have to reimport all the MP3 one by one"
8- I try to do that and.... Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa.... the folder with all the audio has been deleted by Presenter !!!!  I lost all the audio !!!!!!
Ok,  that's not what really happen.  Because I know that sometimes Adobe Presenter decide for me that it want to delete ALL my audio files.  So after step 4 (before re-open the Powerpoint of the client) I made a backup of the folder that contains all the mp3.
Can someone tell me why Presenter decide to erase all audio files when it crash or when it has a problem ????
If I did not make a backup, I would have lost all the work of the client...
And can someone help me with my other post (august 2010)
    Audio files name
All the 60 slides of my client have a name that doesn't match with the slide.  So because Adobe Presenter crashed et erase all the audio files, I have to re-import them slide by slide.  But with all those bizarre name, I have to listen each files and find the good slide that match with them.  why the mp3 don't have a name that match the slide number.  It would be very very very easiest !!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks

What version of Presenter are you using? I know this was a bug with Presenter 7.0.0, and maybe 7.0.1. I've not heard of it happening since then, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. It may be worth a discussion with Adobe Support about what happened and why Presenter would delete your audio files. You can reach them at 800-945-9120.
As to you other post, I did reply to it, but Presenter's functionality can't be changed. When you publish the presentation the audio files that are created do have a naming convention that associates them with the slide they are on, but in the build phase, it uses some cryptic method that I've never been able to figure out. So, for that reason, as well as a handful of other non-Presenter related reasons, I've taken to just using an Audio recording/editing application to deal with my audio, and then importing to Presenter. This allows me more control over the naming convention, as well as more control over the quality and settings used to record and/or encode the audio. It may seem like more work at first, but I feel like I can get through the audio portion of Presenter faster when I use a tool built for audio. Just remember to save or split your audio into individual files for each slide. Name them sequentially and then you can import them all at once into Presenter by selecting the first slide you wish to import to, browsing to the audio files and selecting them all for import.
