Garageband export to wav? How much "damage" to quality if compressed?

I've made several songs with Garageband which I want to export to my album. I am thinking of ways to get the best possible quality out of Garageband. It doesn't seem to have .wav export so I need to either export it to .m4a or .mp3 OR do a workaround and record the output of my Mac to another recording device (but that's difficult to do since my project doesn't play smoothly because of so many instruments and effects). Oh yeah and then there's option to open the project with Logic Pro 9 that I also have BUT it doesn't sound the same at all and the mixer settings are way off compared to Garageband.
Can anyone explaing in simple terms what kind of damage to my songs quality does compressing to, for example, 320kbps mp3? I know it's not really an audible quality loss, but it's still something that bothers me.
Or is there any other way?

If you want CD quality don't use compression at all. Then GarageBand will export in AIFF format, the quality you get on a CD. You can compress it later to m4a or mp3 in iTunes, when your album is finished.
Simply disable the "compress" button in the export panel, when you share your song to iTunes.

  • How much damage has been done to damp iphone5?

My son was on a school trip to a beach to tidy up rubbish- the weather was relentless rain and his supposedly waterproof jacket was soaked through by the end of a couple of hours exposed to the elements. Unfortunately his iphone was in the jacket pocket and also got damp. He was still able to use the phone to contact me through phoning and text. He noticed though that parts of the screen were lighter in colour and the sound was muffled. Once we got home, the sound was back to normal, but he couldn't use the home button. I put the phone in a sealed bag of rice, and set it under a radiator. After about 4 hours we looked at it again (during this time the phone had not been turned off, though my son thought it had been) and the phone was behaving as though the home button was being pushed in as siri kept coming on. We turned off the phone, and it is currently bag in the rice bag in the hotpress. Any thoughts as to how much potential damage has been done?

Well, since Apple doesn't repair iPhones, they replace them, it really doesn't matter... The damage is total. That's like asking how pregnant a woman is... If she's pregnant, she is 100% pregnant.

  • Quicktime Pro: When Exporting for Web, how much does it reduce file size?

I'm considering purchasing Quicktime Pro so I can reduce the file size of Quicktime movies so they load quickly to be viewed on my website. Can anyone tell me how much I can expect to be able to reduce the size of a Quicktime file?

I will try some. 50-100 kB for a 4-color PDFs sounds high if any compression at all is used in the graphic. I would suggest that you look a bit at the graphics. They may not be "16-color" graphics (you may have used 4 colors, but the graphic storage would have to be 16 color, 256 color, or millions of colors and I suspect the storage is millions of colors that a lot of scans default to). You could use PhotoShop or simply IrfanView to check the properties of the colors of the images. That would be the first step I would suggest.
Once you have the colors set, then save them as TIFF to minimize loss in the graphic. TIFF has several options for compression and I really can't advise you there. Just select whatever is the default compression. I created a 8.5X11 image with 72dpi and 16 colors, getting a 55 kB file. The corresponding PDF was 60 kB. There is pixelization and such, but that is something for you to test.
Once you you have reasonable graphics, then consider the PDF. As I said, I ended up with a 60 kB PDF. A segment of the PDF is shown below as a JPeg:
When you put the files together, use Save As to finalize the PDF. Working on the graphics first is probably the best way to fix the issue, rather than dealing with the PDF directly. This allows you to clean up the PDFs and be sure that you have the level of colors (not millions, even if you only use 4) etc.

  • Decompressing iTune files to Aifs - How much loss of quality, if any?

In the bottom corner of iTunes, there's a Burn Disk button. It then takes your AAC or MP3 files and restores them to aif files to burn a standard audio CD of the playlist.
My question is this: Does the restoration process completely restore the aif to its original pristine CD quality, or is the restored aif file poorer quality than the one the MP3 or AAC file was originally made from, and if so, by how much?
    iBook G4, iPod 60GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Does the restoration process completely restore the aif to its original pristine CD quality, or is the restored aif file poorer quality than the one the MP3 or AAC file was originally made from,
Neither. It should be identical to the MP3/AAC you are converting from.

  • How much over the quality settings can I go.

FYI new to editing w/ FCP. Question, I created a movie (school graduation) and the running time is 125 minutes. The DVD settings are best 120 minutes or 150. Even thought I'm a few minutes past 120 can I still use it? If yes how much past can you go.

It should fit just fine, as long as you're encoding your audio to AC3, which is part of that preset bundle.

  • How much to charge for encoding/compressing?

I'm used to getting materials that are already pre-encoded/compressed from Final Cut Pro to a format I can use in DVD Studio Pro. I've been asked to bid on a project that would be 90-100 minutes in length that would have me do the encoding via Compressor and I'm not quite sure what to charge (as it would take hours and hours to do, I'm not sure my regular hourly rate would be appropriate, but don't want to screw myself out of $$$ either, especially since it would tie up the computer for a while).
What would be a good rate (I'm in the New York Metro area)
    Thanks for your help!

Might be a chance to cover the costs of something like Bitvice. Currently the Compressor 2 highest quality settings are not ideal, and Bitvice might do a better job. You could charge them $300 and cover the cost of the program:
    http://www.innobits.se/ssl/phform.php
Incidentally, there's a company just around the corner from me in SoHo who charge about $100 per hour of footage, so including tapes and everything they would be under $300, and that's for high quality hardware encoding.

  • How Much Does Camera Quality Matter for Pics Imported to iMovie?

    Hello,
Always appreciate the responses and answers I get from the forum - thanks in advance!
I am considering upgrading my digital SLR to something 10 mp or better. But wondering whether or not at some point the original quality of digital pics no longer matters because of rendering or compression that might take place once imported to iMovie or when bounced to iDVD. Put another way, is it worth spending $1000.00 for a camera thats pictures will end up in iMovie? (Because I like the Ken Burns feature a whole better in iMovie than the ton of work and less than results I get in FCE).
    Thanks again!

    Kevin,
These are all the pixels you need for iDVD: if you are using NTSC - 720x540 for 4:3 and 854x480 for 16:9; if you are using PAL - 768x576 for 4:3 and 1024x576 for 16:9. If you really like to do high Ken Burns effects zooms, more pixels will be useful, but 10 megapixels is probably more than you really need.
HOWEVER, a $1,000 digital SLR will have a lot of additional features that will give you better pictures. But only you can decide if the extra features are worth it to you.

  • I accidentally dropped my mac and I think I broke the LCD. How much would I have to pay with warranty?

How much would I have to pay to get it fix with warranty?

The cost varies depending on where you go to get it fixed and how much damage was done, but neither the warranty nor extended AppleCare covers that in any case.

  • I bouhght my computer a week ago and I spilled a liquid on my keyboard , and i would like to know how much coast to repaid the damage , i didnt buy in the offical apple shop.

i bouhght my Macbook pro retina display 13 Inch i5  a week ago and I spilled a liquid on my keyboard , and i would like to know how much coast to repair the damage in apple store , i didnt buy in the offical apple shop. Some places are asking to pay 620 Pounds.

The only way you can get a valid estimate is by someone examining the MBP directly.  Since no one on these forums can see or examine your MBP, you will need to get this infomation from a qualified repair shop.  It seems that you already have secured one estimate.  You can also bring the MBP to an Apple store and have a genius bar examine it for FREE.
    Ciao.

  • How much is it to repair a water damaged macbook pro?

My boyfriend spilled beer on my laptop quite some time ago. I haven't been able to go into the Apple store to get it checked out because I've been so busy. A few of the keys don't work and the backlight (where the beer was spilled) is very dim, other than that it still works perfectly fine.  I read online somewhere that you shouldn't turn it on at all until it's been checked out but I've been using it perfectly fine just with these annoying faults. How much will it cost me to have it repaired? In GBP, because I live in the UK.

Went to the Apple store (like you suggested) and it's only going to cost me £135 to repair which I'm so happy about. He said only the top case is damaged but the liquid didn't manage to get all the way inside my computer so it's great news...we would've been forking out hundreds if the liquid had gotten in deeper!

  • How much to spend on a USED Mac that will run GarageBand?

Friends of mine are looking to buy GarageBand as a Christmas present. But they need a Mac, too. They know nothing about Apple products. I know *this much* more <hold fingers about 1/4" apart> than they do, but enough to ask here.
I know they could buy any new iMac and they'd be fine, but:
    1) What would be the minimum system they should look for?
    2) How much could they expect to pay (reasonably) for it?
I found these specs on Apple's website, but not knowing Apple products, it doesn't help me too much:
    * Intel dual-core processor
    * 1 GB or more RAM
    * Older PowerPC G5 and G4 computers will not be able to play back as many tracks
    * PowerPC G4 and G5 computers will benefit greatly from having > 1 GB RAM
    Thanks.

It really depends on the version of GB you want to run.
IF they already have a monitor and keyboard, a mini will do fine too. Apple has pretty good deals on refurbished items. I have had good luck with them:

  • Exporting CP 5 to PDF - how much functionality should I expect?

    Hello,
I've been reading the Captivate forum for hours and I've learned so much, thank you to all the awesome contributors. However, either I'm missing something or I'm trying to do something stupid that has a better solution. Anyway, I need to export a CP 5 project to pdf, and view it with Adobe Reader 9 or 10. It's working great EXCEPT - external links won't work (I posted a question on that yesterday and a reply said "they are aware of it and are working on it"). Also, I discovered today that highlight boxes won't show up in the pdf either (certainly not the end of the world). Am I just barking up the wrong tree here? Is it silly to try and export CP to pdf? I thought it was going to be the best thing since...yea, sliced bread. Now I think I'm just being thick-headed and there is an obvious, easier way to do things...Didn't CP4 have the export to pdf option? Is it really that new that it doesn't work? If anyone can even help me have a better perspective on this whole thing, even if you don't have a solution to the problem, I would be very grateful. It's either run out of trial time or pay $800. Which will it be???? Yikes. Advice? THANKS!

    Hi
You are very patient and helpful and I am grateful.
    Regarding *Issue 1: PDF
Thank you for the thorough workaround. I apologize for not providing all pertinent information. The customer wants a standalone pdf on a CD. Therefore, I can't resort to hosting the files on a web server. Here is more information about my project. I am creating 4 lesson modules for middle school science. Each lesson module lives on its own CD. Each module consists of about 15 lessons. Each lesson is a separate captivate project (or, I might get cute and create one big branching project for the whole module). I am using CP 5 (is that the correct abbreviation?) on a Mac OS X running 10.6.5. Each lesson has about 20 slides, including 10 quiz slides. At certain points in the presentation, a student is asked to click a button to open a small pdf that is an activity, a practice worksheet, or a text piece. Everything is colorful and snazzy and the little pdfs have the text entry boxes so they can type in answers and save their work, or print out the pdf and use a pencil. None of the lessons will be linked with LMS. I instruct the user that the lesson module must be opened with acrobat reader 9 or X. I am actually testing everything with reader X.
I used to create these lesson modules by using a combination of PP, acrobat 9 pro extended, flash movies, flash animations, and a couple of converters here and there. By trying captivate this week, I discovered that I can produce things that look better and take half the time. Except for the fact that I can't get the external links to open when I export to pdf. That's where I'm stuck. Perhaps, since CP is geared toward web hosting content, I need to look for a different tool. Help?  Wouldn't I love to just publish to the customer's website and that would open up lots of fun possibilities! But alas, there are still schools in these great United States that have unreliable internet access, overworked and under-resourced IT departments, etc. That is what I am up against.
OH - one more piece of information. I create the reading, activity, and worksheet pieces in InDesign and save them as pdfs. I've only been using iD for a few months, I love it. I was a long-time framemaker user. Actually, seems like close to forever. I still have to use frame a little longer for some things while customer transitions to iD.
Regarding *Issue 2: Highlight box not showing up
    Mac 10.6.5
    highlight box settings:
No highlight box showing up in SWF or HTML
    Acrobat Reader X
Note: I set the display time and appear after time by sliding the highlight box to the right place in the timeline where it matches the narration. I used to use final cut pro a lot and I love using the timeline in captivate. Previously, I had to go through all kinds of gyrations to sync narration with animated text like highlight boxes...
Finally, I would like to say again how much I appreciate your help. This forum has taught me a lot in a very short period of time. Two thumbs up!
    Best,
    Peezer
