GarageBand Functionality

Hey everyone, has anyone noticed any odd behavior in GarageBand since Mountain Lion came out? My GB worked very well, then over the last couple of weeks after installing ML, it's running poorly. It'll crash a LOT, I keep getting "Disk is too slow. (Prepare) (-10001)" errors, it hangs up on me, the lead (top) track will randomly blank out controls and I can't do anything with it unless I close GB down and restart. I have a late 2009 24" iMac, with 8GB of RAM. This is highly annoying. I use GarageBand a LOT as I produce many podcasts. Thanks!

No.

  • Can Rev A Air Owners give some feedback on Garageband use?

Hi I think it's much better to rephrase the question like this:
If you have a Rev A Macbook Air please can you tell me how Garageband functions, using up to 8 tracks of software intruments and perhaps recording in 1 track of audio. Can it cope with up to 16 tracks (software instruments only). This only need be with the Garageband application open, nothing else.
-Please can you tell me also which processor speed, hard drive capacity and hard drive type you have.
Thanks in advance. (Reposted as I realise most people won't own both models of Rev A to compare, my question was phrased badly first time.)

Ive got BOTH the Pro and AIr youre interested in, for what YOU say you want, Id get the Air.
Since you said you were only going to "some graphic/plan design programs", the Air is perfect for moderate Photo editing.
    and you said no games.
Air has fewer parts, only one moving part (the fan), lite as an Ipad (almost) but a full powered computer.
No HD heads to crash, fewer parts = simplicity = less to fault.
Runs cooler than anything else out there (which = durability).  Heat is a killer on a scale of 10X over that of accidents.
Pack around a regular notebook around about 20 days, then an Air, .....after that the standard laptops stays at home.
Air is the only Mac that has Haswell, 802ac wifi, and incredible 12hr. batt life in 13" I5.
Get the 13" much longer battery life, and the screen real estate is better, Ive owned both 11" and 13".     13" also has an SD card slot the 11" doesnt have.

Well I guess I need to answer my own question - do I get points for that?
For $60 I decided to take a chance on the Korg NanoKONTROL2 and I just received it from Amazon. Downloaded/installed the KORG MIDI driver, then the GarageBand plug-in. Everything seems to work as it should with no messing around.
It is somewhat limited, but gives full transport control and volume/pan for 8 tracks along with buttons for Solo, Mute and Record on each track. The pan knobs feel a little wobbly, but not too bad. All things considered, it looks and feels like a decent piece of hardware considering the low cost.
Maybe this will help someone else who is getting tired of using the mouse and keyboard shortcuts to control basic Garageband functions.

  • Do IK multimedia products work with Garageband 10 yet?

I've still been unable to use amplitube 3 with garageband 10, I've looked endlessly through forums on IK and their twitter feed but I've heard nothing on a fix for this issue. Has anybody found a fix or alteast heard of a time frame for an update (either amplitube or garageband)

If so, how do I set it up - - I am using a zoom R16 that emulates a mackie.

  • Using modulation function in GarageBand '08

I am creating a software instrument track using the Caribbean Steel Drum from one of the Apple Jam Packs. I am not using an external keyboard, I'm just doing it within GarageBand.
When playing steel drums, you either hit the note singly with one stick, or you hold it by "rolling" the note like a drum roll. I have been frustrated for months because sometimes when I enter a note to be held (say, a 1/2 or whole note), it will roll when entered- but when I play it back, it won't. I have finally discovered in some documentation that the way to roll a note is by using the modulation function. However, nowhere do I see instructions on how to use it. What I want to do is go back and use that function to make the appropriate notes roll (usually not very many).
Can I do this? If so, how EXACTLY? Is there a better way? Does '09 do it any better?

Solved, despite Apple not being able to help me. To use modulation on the score, shift to advanced mode, select modulation and... wait for it... hold down the command key and click in the field at the beginning of the note- which you won't see in the field, but in the "piano roll" at the top of the window. Command-click again at the end. Drag the first dot to 100%, drag the 2nd one to 0%. Command-click on the lines that form to shape the modulation any way you want.

  • Can GarageBand use airplay functionality with a Griffin GuitarConnect?

Hi, hope someone can help answer this. Before I invest in any plug-in devices for my guitar into iPad 2 / iPhone 3GS I'd like to know if the Griffin GuitarConnect device can be used alongside the airplay functionality in GarageBand (i.e. plug the guitar in through headphone jack and use airplay to stream to A/V receiver)? If not, is there a device that will (maybe Apogee JAM)? I'd like to avoid spending hundreds just for this feature.
    Thanks in advance.

GarageBand for iOS can stream audio to airplay, Bluetooth and HDMI sources (option found under the "Song" section within the settings), but by enabling this it disables any audio input functionality.
You can, if you like, still use touch instruments when streaming to external speakers, but there is a delay which makes doing so impossible to use in practice.
This sort of streaming is designed for playback only.

  • Garageband 'Compare' function in Yosemite

When I adjust a plugin I can click on 'Compare' to switch to previous setting for comparison but then can't switch back to my newly adjusted value I was working on. Seems a pretty useless function at the moment...any clues to what I am doing wrong or is this a bug?

Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service. If you are within 14 days from date of purchase then do this ASAP. You can exchange it or get a refund without question.

Have you checked dmesg for USB and mouse dropouts and reconnections?

Looks like my mouse really gets disconnected because of the APC.
I'm assuming you have a USB mouse.
    That's right. High-speed USB mouse.
smudge, your advice works. Speed now keeps its value after those reconnections. But I'm very disappointed in my Line-R 1200...

  • Does garageband for iOS include the lessons function?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but i see that they specifically mention this on the Mac OS version writeup, but not the iOS version. I'd like to try it out for the lessons.
    Thanks for the advice!

It's still a great app, and a steal at the price.

  • GarageBand stalls when trying to update loops

Opened the new version of GarageBand (10.0.2) on my iMac late 2009, it downloaded the new sounds and loops, asked for my Apple ID, and then it stalled. The progress bar does not move, and GarageBand won't respond otherwise. Any ideas to get it to finish the install properly? I've gotten rid of 6.0.5 and trashed the .../Library/Application Support/GarageBand folder, (and rebooted) but still nothing happens.

That was unnecessary, and you'll probably regret it. If you still can, restore GarageBand 6.0.5 from your backup. Both versions are sharing large parts of the instruments library and loop library, so you will not save much space by uninstalling GarageBand 6.0.5. And the new GarageBand is missing some of the functionality, that the older had, for example the podcast template, Magick GarageBand, free combination of effects.
I've gotten rid of 6.0.5 and trashed the .../Library/Application Support/GarageBand folder, (and rebooted) but still nothing happens.
If you trashed that folder, you first need to reinstall GarageBand 10.0, because it needs the Instrument library.

  • I'm assuming the functionality is there. I just can't find it.

Last year I put together a video for a class I was taking. It was roughly 3.5 minutes long and had about 140 clips. All the video clips came from television (my Tivo) and the still images (using Ken Burns effect) were from the web. In addition, the audio I used was from the original clip or music from my CDs.
I enjoyed creating the project, sort of a commentary on one of contemporary life’s issues, and it would have been a little longer, but I started having problems with iMovie HD, probably because my old PB G4 had only 768 MB of RAM.
Just for my own enjoyment I’d like to add to the video. With my MBP with 4 GB RAM I was hoping to use iMovie ’08 to continue to edit, enhance and add to the existing video.
I’ve started to play with the upgraded iMovie and there are some things that I can’t seem to be able to do. I’ve read a number of the comments from others about how iMovie ’08 has removed functionality that iMovie HD had. However, I can’t imagine Apple doing that.
My hope is that it’s "operator ignorance" and that all of the same features are there, just operating differently. Yet I’m stuck on how to do a few things. Maybe someone can help.
Here are a few of the things that are causing me problems.
    1. I can’t figure out how to import music. Since I sometimes edit my music files with a separate program to enhance the sound, I want to be able to tell iMovie ’08 where an mp3 or m4a file is on my hard drive and import that file. IMovie ’08 only seems to look in one of two Sound Effects folders, the GarageBand folder or the iTunes folder. How do I import music from another place?
    2. I can’t find the facility to count frames in a clip. One of the techniques I’ve used in the video is to switch between two or three longer clips starting at say 22 frames each, then to 20, then to 18, 17, 16, 14 and so on. I can’t figure out how to get that kind of granularity in iMovie ’08.
    3. When I import the iMovie HD project into iMovie ’08 all of my audio was lost except for the audio attached to the original clips, most of which I do not use. The audio was not very elaborate, just the two additional audio tracks from about eighteen or twenty different sources. However, fading down and up (while using the voice from a clip) and the fading in and out between clips was a great deal of work to lose. Is there some way to bring in the audio from the original project? Can it really be possible that Apple chose to eliminate the two audio tracks and control capabilities? When I want a particular chord to hit a particular video event in a clip I need to manipulate the start point of the audio concurrently with the manipulation of the video clip, possibly to add or remove one or more frames. Going to GarageBand only lets me cut the audio so that’s not a solution. Is there actually no way to edit both in iMovie ’08?
    4. None of my titles shows up in the imported project. Every twenty to thirty seconds is about another aspect of the subject. I used one of the text techniques (White text with black shadow over a red banner overlaid on the lower part of the screen) for these section titles and near the end I use a scroll over the video (like for movie credits) for another effect. All of these are gone. Is there a way to import the original iMovie HD video (which I still have) so that these effects are there?
I want to stay positive about the upgraded product (especially since I just purchased iLife ’06 for this new MBP three or four weeks ago). I was expecting the facility of iMove HD to be enhanced in this new release, not diminished.
Another poster mentioned that it might be time to move to FCE. Maybe I need to do that, but it’s an awful lot of money for my needs to just do what iMovie HD does – plus a little more.
Thank you in advance for any assistance or advice.

I can’t figure out how to import music.
Import it into iTunes first, then use the media browser in iMovie '08 to locate it.

  • How do I use optical input for recording in Garageband 9?

    Hi,
I'm trying to use the Optical Line Input on my G5 for recording in Garageband, using a MOTU 828. I have the 828 optical output connected to the optical audio input on the G5, and I have Digital In (Optical digital-in port) selected in system preferences/sound. But in Garageband preferences, optical or digital input is not among my choices. If I select system setting or built-in audio 2, I get no signal. If I select MOTU 828, it defaults to the analog master outputs on the 828.
I am a Logic 8 user, and I'm able to select the optical input in Logic with no problem. I have my MOTU audio setup set so that the optical output is the default output, but Garageband still seems to use the analog output. I can tell by the record level, which is considerably louder for analog than for optical.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

  • GarageBand 08 not working on PowerPC

    Hi,
I have a refurbished G4 iBook with PowerPC that I purchased online and GarageBand has never worked properly on my iBook. The OS is Leopard 10.5.8 and GarageBand is 4.1.2. I downloaded the 4.1.2 update and reinstalled it (already had it) just to check if it was my installation. I did not receive installation media with my iBook.
Magic GarageBand does not work. If I select Magic GarageBand, I get a starting screen for it that is not completed. Some of the words are printed over other words. The window is mainly gray and black and white. The buttons are white with no words on them. The buttons click but don't do any action. If I don't try Magic GarageBand and just have the starting screen with the Grand Piano track and try to click Track Info, sometimes it doesn't resize the display to the left and show (what I think is) the Track Info panel at the right. When it does, nothing appears in that panel. The panel is gray. The "wood" frame appears consistently at the right of the window. It seems that I always get a crash when exiting after trying Track Info.
Many people have reported the same kind of error, especially Magic GarageBand 08 on Leopard using PowerPC. I have not seen any mention of the issue with Track Info.
I can record in the Grand Piano track using a music keyboard and a USB cable or using "music typing" where I can type with my iBook keyboard, but I cannot use Track Info with that track (as far as I understand). I've tried clicking the Track Info button and it will sometimes result in a "ding" and GarageBand will crash after that. I can use the Show Track Info button and it doesn't seem to get the "ding" but GarageBand will crash after exit.
I think I spent most of yesterday researching this (and had probably researched it before) and deleted the two often-mentioned GarageBand preferences files. I repaired permissions. I also deleted the emusicusbmidi driver. I created a new user account and tried to use GarageBand there, same errors as in my admin account. I do not think I have the other programs that are sometimes mentioned as conflicting with GarageBand. I looked through my Spotlight search and/or through the Applications folder and did not see them.
My crash report file seems much like others I've seen posted in forums. (I was probably reading forum notes from 2-5 years ago.) I looked through the file for plug-in or font and did not find font. Only one plug-in was mentioned. It did not seem to have error info near it in the listing. Do the "???"'s in the display indicate an issue? I see them most often near what seems to be one of the dynamic function calls.
I'm somewhat a new Mac user, though I have not used my iBook very extensively, mainly to access email and watch online webstreams. I usually accept the software updates that are offered (I think I always do). I think there was a major update I received after I got the iBook probably in 2009.
Does anyone have recommendations, including where else I might check for information? I've searched Google and Apple Support and Discussions. I am planning to also see if Google Groups is searched in a different way that just Google. I may also ask at a local store that specializes in Macs.
    Have a nice day

(NOTE: I posted this on another thread which appeared to describe the same problem)
I had this problem, and it is now resolved. I got memtest, booted into single user mode and started the test. I realized that it told me I had an amount of memory that was much lower than what I expected (I have 8 GB). I canceled the test and shutdown the machine. I then half ejected each memory module on the side closest to the front (it's a quad g5) and re-seated the modules. I've had this problem once or twice in the past and each time pushing on the modules or re-seating them fixed it. It is a wonder I don't notice losing 2 GB of RAM especially since this machine is used for heavy-duty scientific calculations by me and my research group (I also use it to make podcasts of my lectures, hence GarageBand).
I then started the memtest again, but it was clear that it was going to take forever, so I decided to just see if the GarageBand Memory Test would be sufficient (i.e. try to make GB actually work). It did. Since my symptoms were so similar to those mentioned by others, I would certainly recommend just re-seating the memory. It is possible the modules just loosen themselves or that slight oxidation of the contacts leads to poor conduction. In any case I'm back in the garage!
First check: in About This Mac, see if you have the amount of memory you should
Second check: remove the modules and put them back
Third check: test each module using memtest (find with google)
This should solve the particular problem we have been having. It is strange that the problem seemed to be correlated with both Leopard updating and iLife 08.
