GarageBand & Guitars

I tried using iRig (from the Apple store because that's the only one they had) directly with GarageBand for the iPad and couldn't get any sound out of it (speakers or headphones). I was able to do the tuning thing but I couldn't hear it even though there was obviously some connection.
I replaced that iRig with another one, and again nothing worked. Then I installed the free Amplitube iPad app, and I heard sound from that, and then I switched over to GarageBand and it suddenly worked. Apparently the green LED doesn't stay on with a connection just when there is a note???
Anyway, my question is: Has it been others' experience that you have to install Amplitube in order to get any sound out of GarageBand?

Hi
You have to turn the monitor on to be able to hear your guitar. Plug in the iRig, then touch the plug icon at upper left and it'll show you the slider switch that does that.

  • Griffin GarageBand Guitar Cable for connection

Can I use the Griffin GarageBand Guitar cable to connect my Yamaha mixer to my G5 tower. It's a 1/4" connector to a 1/8" mini-jack.
    Thanks for your help!

You'll need to tell us more about your setup.
It could be any number of things, like what effects are you using?
Or did you know that where your guitar is placed in relation to other electronics can create a magnetic field that is picked up by the guitars pickups? Try moving your guitar around by facing it in other directions and see if that helps.
Without more info though, that's all I can suggest.
    Good luck.

  • Help. Garageband guitar distortion

I've recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and now, when I create a real instrument track in Garageband for my guitar, the output sound is badly distorted like a broken speaker. The bad sound occurs when I am plugged in with my m-audio usb recording interface, or my Lightsnake guitar chord which is a direct usb chord. So the cause is neither the m-box or the lightsnake (I've tried both in every usb port). I've tried it with all other usb ports unplugged, different chords, same result. I've got everything selected correctly in main sound preferences and an garageband prefs. The crackling sound occurs with two different guitars with two different cords.
My M-audio Keystation 49e usb keyboard works fine. However, if I create a real instrument guitar track, the keyboard starts making the same terrible output noise, even though it's a different track. Delete the guitar track and the keyboard track returns to normal.
I've used Garageband for four years without a problem.
I've posted about this maddening dilemma before but haven't received any suggestions as of yet.

  • GarageBand - guitar lesson 1 is no longer in the lesson store. Why?

Am I the only one that sees this anomaly?
Lesson 1, for guitar (Intro to Guitar), is missing from the lesson store!  I am unable to download it on ANY of the 5 macs at my house. What happened? The only lessons available are 2 thru 9 (8 total).  There used to be 9 lessons in GarageBand '09.  That intro video was perfect for beginners.

I am seeing the same. Only lesson 2 to 9 are showing.
Perhaps they removed it, because it comes automatically with any new GarageBand installation and it should not be necessary to download it again.
If you still have lesson 1 on one of your macs or in an older backup, restore it to your System Library. The lessons are installed in
    /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Learn to Play/Basic Lessons

  • Garageband guitar lags on macbook

    Hi,
I hope someone can help me with this one...
Just got my new macbook 2.4ghz with 2gb RAM, plugged in my guitar with the griffin lead I've used for a few years with my G4 iMac, and the guitar from the macbook speakers lags way behind what I play.
Garageband works great on my G4 iMac, so I kind of figured it would be better on macbook! What's happening? is it the new garageband? the audio in?
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Steve

Turn the "Enhance timing" down in garageband located in the lower left corner when you open the edit bar, this botton is located next to the "EYE" botton or go into preferences and Adjust the audio settings.

  • Garageband Guitar Lesson Downloads Can't Complete

Is anyone else having issues downloading guitar lessons? I have three lessons that won't complete. I am using a MacBook Pro running OSX Lion and all software is up to date. I can't complete one download in each of the three guitar lessons categories.

If you are getting this error when trying to download to the computer, try the following.
    Install the latest iTunes.
    Remove the SC Info folder.

  • Griffin Garageband guitar cable??

Does anyone use this with Logic Express or know if it will work?
I would be plugging it into the audio input of my MacBook Pro.
    thanks

just further to what I wrote, I see that I said 'without an interface' in my first post - an iMic is an interface so I might have been a little misleading. I'm not familiar with the ports on your Mac ....but I'm think it should work. Questions to tick of would be:
    - have you had any luck with anything other than the Griffin G-cable?
    - are you enabling the track (ie., the 'R' should be illuminted red to hear the signal)
-if you can't hear anything, can you see a signal is getting through, does the meter flicker?
    - have you tried MIDI? (that's something to verify that Logic is working)
I had a lot of fun/luck with the iMic ...if you don't have one, its worth consdering. And they are good, and cheap (compared to the interface aailable), and mine still works well after years of use.

  • Garageband picking up strange radio stations with Griffin Guitar cable?

I have just purchased the Griffin Garageband Guitar Cable and have it working with my electric guitar BUT I can hear in the background some foreign radio stations . This is particularly noticeable when using the guitar effects . Any solutions to this ?

that kind of sounds like the shield in the cable might be broken. it might be a good idea to return it for a replacement

  • Saving guitar modeling favorites...

When I make changes to standard garageband guitar and pedal configurations (i.e. add pedals, etc.) I can not figure out how to save them as a favorite. I thought it would be at the bottom when it asked me to "safe settings" but I have no clue where it is saved to? Is there a place where you can save you favorite configurations?

    Napa Valley Jim wrote:

all your settings are accessible via the PopUp menu over the amp, under the top, "My Settings," portion of the menu. there is a no option to "favorite" specific presets.

  • Electric Guitar

Is it possible to plug an electric guitar straight into a MacBook Pro and record onto GarageBand?
    Thanks,
    Angie

    Hi Angie,
My friend tried out this guitar cable that they sell in amazon:
    http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Technology-GarageBand-Guitar-Cable/dp/B0002VRP8C/r ef=pdbbs_sr1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197320750&sr=8-1
I believe it will work fine. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are considering the link above be careful not to fry the computers audio board because an amp has a lot of electricity coming out if it is shooting a lot of volume.
    Hope you find this helpful,
    Vicente.

  • Yamaha NP-11 to connect to garageband

I have a Yamaha NP-11 to connect to garageband using a Prodipe midi usb 1 in / 1 out but I'm not able to do it. I also have installed the um132mx yamaha drivers.
Garageband recognizes the midi port and Midi configuration also recognize ProdipeMidi.
When I choose the instrument in garageband, guitars appear like real instrument but grand piano like software instrument.
Do I forget to do anything else? Thanks.

You need a MIDI interface - you can buy a simple thing for not too much money that will give you MIDI in and out (although the out isn't usable with Garageband) and will plug into a USB socket.
If you might want to record with a microphone or instrument in the future, then it might be as well to think about it now and buy an audio interface (most of them include MIDI in/out as well).
There should be a setting on your keyboard called 'Local off' which disengages the direct input from the keyboard but sends the MIDI out for just such a situation.

  • Why isn't the edit button not showing in my ESX24 sampler?

why isn't the edit button not showing in my ESX24 sampler?

Is that during installation when you see the two icons.. the one on the left looking like a Garageband guitar icon, the one on the right like the Logic Pro platimum record icon?
Yes.. that one.. with the choice to click on which option you want/are coming from...
p.s. I'll probably aquire a Mac Mini this fall then upgrade.... I mean repurchase!
I think I managed to grab one of the last of the 2011 refurb'ed MMS's.... at that super low price Apple were selling them for... before they bumped it up and now, they seem to have none left at all at any price
However, just in case, I have found this site really useful at keeping track of Apple's refurb stock... and pricing

  • IPad 2 VS MacBook Pro?

Hey everybody! I want to get my brother an iPad 2 for Christmas but he wants a MacBook Pro. What he is going to be doing with either is light web browsing, recording music with GarageBand (guitar with Apogee Jam), playing games, listening to music, watching videos, read some books and maybe have some guitar tabs. He doesn't really have a reason why he wants a Mac over an iPad except that he likes the "feel" of a laptop computer which I understand. However, I could get 2 iPads for the price of one Mac (maybe another iPad for my other brother). Are there any reasons why the Mac would be better than the iPad and vice versa?? I would really like your opinion on which device would be better for the uses that I have mentioned above.
    Thanks for your help!!!
    Cheers,
    Christopher

Initially until before iOS 5, iPads could only be made usable by initially syncing to a computer some data from iTunes.   I believe now with iOS 5, that's no longer necessary.  So the line is blurred.   After all, you have an App Store right on the iPad.   So double check in the iPad forum if anyone has bought an iPad and didn't need a computer to set it up yet.
As for more flexiblity, there are eReader apps that there is no substitute for on a computer on the iPad.
And the instant on features of an iPad work in areas where it would be unwise to transport a computer in sleep mode.
The downside of the iPad is it has a different software library, one geared towards a smaller screen, and not as powerful a graphics chip for certain types of games.   There are Flash based web browsers that work on the iPad if you are connected via WiFi.    3G being integrated on the iPad can't be found in the same manner on a MacBook Pro.
An iPad for instance can't rip music from CDs, but it can be used to buy music from iTunes Store.
But I agree the line between iPad and MacBook Pro has blurred with the release of iOS 5.  And for some people that's all they need.
