GarageBand hiccups with M-Audio MobilePre in leopard

Hello,
Previously, I used Garageband 08 on my macbook with no issues. I've since upgraded to 10.5.2 and I just updated the firmware to the recent version. I've also downloaded the latest driver for the MobilePre from M-Audio's site.
But now when I try to record it either freezes or makes very loud noise tones rather than what I'm playing. I was using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse yesterday when this was occurring, I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it. Has anyone else had similar problems?
Thanks!

It could be be the bluetooth keyboard and mouse; try disabling bluetooth and see if it fixes the problem.
Several people have reported audio problems after a recent Airport update, try disabling that to see if it fixes the problem.
Finally, 10.5.2 could be there problem. There are several threads on this forum and others reporting problems with USB audio in 10.5.2.

  • Can't hear sound with M-Audio MobilePre USB driver in Logic 7.2

Hi. I've installed an M-Audio MobilePre USB interface to hook up a nova mic and i've also hooked up an oxygen eight midi keyboard. Can't get any sound from Logic when i select M-Audio MobilePre USB as my driver, and can't get Logic to recognize my midi keyboard. I have downloaded the latest M-Audio MobilePre USB update off the web, and still nothing. I'm new at all of this. Can someone help me? Thanks in advance.

I'm wondering did you install the drivers and after that plugin the usb devices or did you leave them plugged in during install?
What happens when you unplug the midi interface and put it back in? Is it recognized by Logic by putting up a dialog that something has changed?

  • Problems with M-Audio Fasttrack Pro and Garageband after 10.5.2

    Hi all,
I use GarageBand daily with my M-Audio FastTrack Pro and have had absolutely no problems until I installed the 10.5.2 update.
Suddenly the Audio randomly cuts out when I'm recording, monitoring or playing back - also my recordings appear to skip and jump too. Usually I can rectify it by power cycling the Fasttrack but the problem re-occurs after about 30 seconds of recording.
I have double checked the I am using M-Audio's latest drivers and have repaired permissions and the disk. I was wondering if anyone else had had any problems with this?
All help would be appreciated, looks like I'm going back to 10.5.1 though.

    Hi !
Still no answer from M-Audio but it seems that they are not in cause.
I read on several topics of Apple's Forums some similar problems with other audio devices and also with some USBhubs.
I ran some little tests and for my case, using the other USB port of the MacBook seems to resolve the problem (but that's not a permanent solution for my point of view).
Using a selft-powered USBhub works also, even on the port that makes it crash without hub.
As I studied a little bit of electronics, it looks really like a problem of power supply through USB to me. It could be some kind of micro-cuts (or micro-undervoltage) that are sufficient to cut the audio stream and freeze a bit the system but not enough for MacOSX to switch significantly to the internal audio.
But two questions still remain :
Why one USB port of the MacBook and not the other one ?
    Why since 10.5.2 ?
Steve, if you hear me ;o)
'Hope they will react quickly !

  • M-Audio MobilePre USB Drivers settings with G4 PB 1.33

Can anyone tell me the optimum driver settings for play and record on my PB G4 1.33GHZ 768MB RAM
Currently getting intermittent 'cracks' with 4 audio and 4 Instrument channels with not a lot of plug-ins. CPU AUDIO reading 80% at 128 I/O buffer, larger disk buffer unchecked.Thought it was 'static' but no!
    Driving me mad!!!
Will a Firewire I/O improve things, if so what?
    Powerbook 12 1.33GHZ Mac OS X (10.4.8) 768MB RAM

Hi, I'm new to logic and the forum but with a similar powerbook I wanted to see how far I could push it without having problems.
With 28 audio tracks and 3 instruments with maybe 8 reverbs, compression, flanger and eq while playing an additional audio instrument my CPU AUDIO meter never goes above 60-70%. The I/O meter peaks every so often but I don't notice any ill effects.
I've set the I/O buffer from 0-1024 and larger disk buffer checked with not much of a difference. The only thing that affected anything was having cpu performance set to automatic in the system preferences/energy settings.
When you say "cracks" do you mean latency while recording a guitar, etc.? I'm really curious to find out because I'm shopping for an interface to record guitar with amp modeling and have been told firewire's the way to go. The TC Electronics KONNECT 24D comes highly recommended because it has onboard DSP and Hardware monitoring which does'nt use CPU power.

  • Funny latency with M-Audio Mobile Pre USB

    Hi,
I'm using an M-Audio MobilePre USB interface with Garageband, and I'm 99% certain that GB is doing something funny with latency. I'll record a clip, finish recording, and it'll do some funny compensation where it assumes that there is latency there where there is none, so it shifts the clip left by a few milliseconds (enough to sound sloppy). In every case where I record from the Mobile Pre USB, I find that if I shift the clip right by a few ticks, it'll sound like it did when I was recording it. Is this a known issue, and, if so, is there any way to calibrate it? Otherwise I'm left manually adjusting clips.
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
As you can see I believe I am having a similar problem except I am using a Fastrack Pro. Hopefully you will get a response that may also help me.

    Hi there,
I am new to Mac so bear with me. I have just purchased a Macbook Pro with Logic Express 9. I also purchased an M-Audio Fast Track Pro to connect my instruments. But I have a problem. I can't seem to record anything through the M-audio interface. I ran a test and can record using the internal microphone (which I then turned off).
I have loaded the drivers and the O/S sees it. I check in Logic Express 9 and it sees the interface. In the Mac system preferences it sees the M-Audio USB line input but when you highlight the line it says "the selected device has no input controls". In the Logic Express preferences the Logic software sees the M-Audio device.
Would appreciate any suggestions as to why this is happening. Suspect I am just missing a setting or two.

  • Metadata with Multichannel Audio doesn't work...

I've been attempting to create metadata entries for some movie files and have found that the data will display properly only if the file has 2-channel audio. Other files with multichannel audio will not display the info correctly from within iTunes. I'm referring to such things as the poster frame, movie rating, list of actors, and description. I've used some freebie apps such as MetaX and vID Infiltr8 to get the 2-channel files to work, but no success with 6-channel audio files. Is this a bug, or will I need to acquire some additional software to import the data correctly?
    Thanks...

To revert to 10.6.3 or whatever you were using before 10.6.4, you'd need to reinstall the earliest Snow Leopard version you have (either the one that came preinstalled on your machine, or if the machine is older than SL, then the Snow Leopard version that you got on a DVD later). Then reapply the Combo Updater for the version you want to revert to (10.6.1, 10.6.2 or 10.6.3). Then run Software Update to get all the ancillary Apple updates that are compatible with that version of SL.
I presume from your interest in reverting that you had the Kanex adapter before you updated to 10.6.4, and it worked as expected then. Is that correct?
If it isn't, and you haven't had the Kanex adapter working correctly at any time in the past, then I urge you to hold off on downgrading the operating system at least until you've gotten some substantive feedback from Kanex tech support and other posters here.

  • Using Garageband files with IDVD

I am posting this question again hoping someone can answer. I posted my question in the idvd forum and got zero responses. I used imovie08 and successfully edited a 58 minute movie and published it as a medium sized movie. I then used garageband to add chapter markers and I chose the yes option for ilife preview. I opened idvd and clicked on add movie. From media files I choose the audio files and attempt to drag and drop my garageband movie file into the add movie icon. But nothing happens. Add movie won't take the file from garageband. If I open my media files and use the imovie file that hasn't gone through the garageband chaptering process the file will drop in. But this doesn't give me the chapters that I want. Something I tried in idvd I used the menu view, highlighted that and used the advanced tool to create chapter markers hoping that this would help idvd to recognize my garageband file with previously made chapters. This doesn't work for me.
So what am I doing wrong? I did this process once before and finally after days of trying it worked for me. I chalk that one up to dumb luck. But now I can't repeat the process and have no idea how to get past this problem. I am running a business here and need to get on with this, please someone help me.
    Thanks,
    Zach

    Zach,
Did you choose the option of sending the movie (from GB with the chapters) to iDVD?? Secondly, where is the option for 'iLife preview'?

  • Using garageband 09 with imovie 09

    new to imove & garageband
some questions on using garageband 09 with imovie 09...
    - Is there a URL that explains in detail how to use garageband with imove 09 to improve a voice only naration track?
    - Is there a URL that explains in detail each of garage bands effects/audio unit effects on the sound track?
    - is it correct that once you share an imovie to garage band and edit the sound track with garageband you can not "re-share" it back to imovie for video editing?
    - in post production, I am use to doing the following for sound track:
noise reduction, compression/expansion/limiting, equalization, normalize to -1dB.
Some have garage band effects have corresponding names, like compression. But, is there a noise reduction?
    Thanks
    Bob

    This might be helpful: http://comtechlab.iupui.edu/tutorialsfolder/tutorials.html
No URL that explains the effects in depth to my knowledge, maybe one of the books, like Missing Manual or the Apple Certified when it comes out.
Some high level info here: http://www.thegaragedoor.com/index.html
Correct, there is no round trip editing. However, you should be able to import the completed movie back into iMovie as a new event and then bring it into a project.
Not sure there is noise reduction.

  • Manuel slide timing with an audio track

My wife is a professor and she is wanting to post podcasts of her lectures. I am trying to figure out how to include her Keynote '08 slides in those podcasts. Is there any way in Keynote '08 to add an audio file and still have manuel timing of the slides? Obviously, the slides are going to need to be displayed for varying amounts of time depending on how long she talks about the subject of each slide in the audio file. I have figured out how to do the record function and record varying timing for slide transitions. But that also picks up noise from my computer microphone. I already have the audio as a file. So how can I record the slide transitions so that they sink with the audio file without getting unwanted noise recorded? Should this be accomplished in Keynote, or is there a way to change slides at the proper times in Garageband?

I believe you would have to break up the audio and place a clip on each slide. You can have one audio file for the whole keynote presentation, but if the timings change it would be better to use just the sound clip you need for each slide. You could do this in garage band and import them through the media pallet.
    Hope that helps.

  • Problem with extracting audio

Hi. I just ripped a show episide from a DVD using handbrake software. Then I imported the episode into imovie. I want to extract a small clip of the audio and bring in into Garageband and use it as a sample.
I split the video and the audio so I could have the one section that I wanted to use. I selected only that one section, and I extracted the audio from only that one section. It's only supposed to be about 20 seconds of audio. Instead, imovie keeps extracting that audio ffrom the entire 24 minute show no matter what I do.
The audio clip itself plays correctly in imovie. But whenever I copy it onto my desktop, or in Garageband, it copies the audio from that whole show. The info window for that clip states that it lasts 24 minutes even though it's only 20 seconds long. it makes absolutally no sense. I just need halp extracting the audio that I need. Thanks for your help.

Earlier versions of iMovie used to sometimes corrupt bits of the project, especially if or when you emptied iMovie's Trash.
iMovie was re-engineered (..starting with version 5, I think..) so that it now does "non-destructive editing". This means that when you choose to split bits of things into separate clips, or to choose to extract the audio from just one small section of a clip, iMovie nevertheless does not split the clip into small pieces, but directs its attention to just that section which you want to work with.
It always retains the whole entirety of the original clip(s), so that there's less possibility of corruption of all the tiny bits.
This means that when you come to extract just a few seconds of - for instance - a 30 minute clip, iMovie extracts the whole 30 mins instead of just the teeny bit you want, but then makes available to you just the few seconds you're interested in.
This was intended to improve the stability and reliability of iMovie HD ..though it makes some aspects more long-winded.
A more circuitous way around this, but a "workaround" which will give you exactly what you want, is to:
1 Split the original video clip so that you have just the one small video section which you want to extract the audio from.
2 Click on and Select just that one small section.
3 Click on File and Export and choose the QuickTime tab and alongside "Compress movie for:" choose 'Full Quality', and tick the box marked "Share selected clips only". In the next dialogue, give the clip a meaningful name (like "20 secs video clip") and Save it in your Movies folder.
4 When that's done, in iMovie choose File and Import, and choose the file you just exported (e.g; "20 secs video clip") and that will be imported into iMovie. Put it on your Timeline, and Extract the audio. It'll extract very quickly, as you've got only a very short video clip to extract it from. You'll now have an audio clip of exactly the right length.
Simple, logical ..but necessary because iMovie now has some "safeguards" built into it ..but they can make audio extraction a longer process than before.

  • Possible audio bug in Leopard 10.5.4?

    Hi guys,
I've recently moved to a MacBook running Leopard 10.5.4, and found the following weird problem.
After a while I use Itunes through my headphones, and I hit the pause button, the kernel_task goes crazy, going from -880 to 3,200 (yes, I'm serious!). If I unplug my headphones, kernel_task goes back to normal. Plugging the headphones back, it goes crazy again, but if I let ITunes play, the problem disappears. I've also tried this with VLC, and for a few seconds of the Avi file I'm opening, there is no sound on the headphones, then the sound comes back, and kernel_task goes back to normal.
This is independent of the headset, since I've tried with various headsets, and speakers. Also, Console doesn't report anything strange going on.
Of course, I've tried quitting Itunes, and any other running application, but the problem is still there.
Any idea about it? Could it be a bug in the audio management of Leopard?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sandro

I've not had this problem, and I've used at least two other sets of headphones besides the set that came with my iPhone. Did you update to 10.5.4 or was it already installed on your MacBook? If it was an update, I'd recommend performing a 10.5.4 combo update, which will replace any corrupted or damaged files that may have changed since the update. It can be found at: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1054comboupdate .html
Last questions: did you boot off of your Leopard DVD and run the Apple Hardware Test, and did you try to replicate this in Safe Mode? (boot while holding down Shift) If there are no remedies and Console still shows nothing, you could wait for 10.5.5 to be released, or call AppleCare.

  • No signal with M-AUDIO Fast Track

    Hello,
I just got the Logic Pro 8 and I have only used garageband.......I used to be fine with M-AUDIO Fast Track......but now in the logic studio I'm not getting a signal......I went to preference click on fast track as the input source but not even getting the smallest signal........I have no clue what I'm doing wrong.....does fast track even work with logic pro?.....
    Thanks

I have a FastTrack, and in my experience, it has many issues. The biggest is that it craps out on a regular basis, say every couple hours, or if sleep mode occurs, etc. Then, in order to 'wake it up' again, it requires cycling the power, which in many cases will cause the entire system to hang (no mouse movement, nothing) for about 2-4 minutes! I have the latest drivers for it, and my system is clean. This is simply bad driver code on M-Audio's part I would recommend anyone who is thinking of buying this unit, look elsewhere. Go with MOTU or etc.
I know that doesn't help much, but it needs to be said...

  • Home Recording w/ AT3035 & M-Audio Mobilepre USB

    Hi All-
I am looking for a good way to get sound from my mic (Audio Technica AT3035) into my iBook (G3, OS X.3.9, 900MHz, 256 MB RAM).
A friend recommended the M-Audio Mobilepre USB, but I've read about people having problems w/ condenser mics.
I realize ideally I would get a new computer and an Mbox, but that's not an option. I'm a grad student, and funds are very limited. Even the Mobilepre is stretching it.
    Any suggestions/comments?
    Thanks,
    Wes.

Wes: I purchased a Behringer mic200, which is a low priced tube preamp with +48v phantom power for a condenser mic. I have been very happy with the results and features. I know that A.R.T. also makes a good one. Only problem for you is that these preamps are powered via a wall wart. Set up is via the audio input jack as opposed to usb.

  • M-Audio MobilePre USB on new iMac

    Hi All
Well, I ordered my 20" iMac on the 25th of August, and it wasn't suppose to ship till tomorrow. And today, I found out I got a nice free upgrade to the new Core 2 Duo 20" iMac, which really made me happy Looks like I'll be getting one of the first BTO Core 2 Duo iMacs, which is really awesome
Anyway, my question to you all is about the M-Audio MobilePre USB and if any of you got it working on the Intel iMacs running 10.4.7. Last I checked, they only had Intel and PPC drivers for upto 10.4.6. My Powerbook is running 10.3.9 so I can't test to see if it would work with the latest OS (plus, the power adapter had a melt down, so I can't even use it at the moment).
