GarageBand importing

Hi everyone,
I recorded an MP3 sound recording a few weeks ago on a digital recorder and saved it in a folder on my computer. When I tried to import it into GarageBand, for some reason, nothing came up. I've created new tracks, and fiddled with the program , but it does not import anything. I know it is not the audio file itself since I can play it on iTunes. Any suggestions?
Thanks all

  • First GarageBand import: resounding silence

Torally wet-behind-the-ears Logic Pro 9 nooobie here. Wanted to move to Logic because GB keeps unpredictably and silently wiping real instrument files in the .band package. I'm sick of it and nobody on GB forums can explain why it happens or how to prevent it. Sorry for off-topic intro.
So I took a nice GB project from my backups and opened it in Logic as advertised. It appeared to import OK. I see tracks with wave forms. The tracks were all muted, which I expected because they were muted in the GB project. So I unmuted them. At that point I clicked Play. The silence is deafening. No VU meters blinking. Nothing. Well, not nothng... the transport is moving to the right as I would expect.
My Preferences settings are all default settings.
    Screenshot of Device preferences
    Screenshot of I/O preferences
And here's a link to a screenshot of my Logic window - you can see how levels are set.
I have tried with both Built-in Input/Output and my Presonus AudioBox (Core Audio compatible interface) as devices. Same result both ways.
Please don't assume I know anything - I don't! Jargon, abbreviations... nada, zip. I'm a banjo player, OK? Not doing anything fancy. Acoustic instrument and vocal trax, with occasional software instruments. I have a lot of stuff I need to remix and I'm feeling like I just rushed up to the top of the mountain and went over the edge.
    Thanks in advance.

OK, summary for the benefit of others who may meet the same problem.
If your tracks are muted in Garageband, they're muted in Logic when you import the project.
Evidently there is muting for regions in Logic, separate from/in addition to track muting.
If a muted GB track is imported, it looks like it's not enough to just unmute the track in Logic with the little M button. You also have to unmute the track's region(s) as nasrudin said. 10 big ones to da man.

  • Scripting for GarageBand: import; compress; export

    Hi there -
I'm not sure where the best place to post this is, so forgive me if this was not the best guess. I'm doing research on language and have a workflow that involves collecting thousands of recordings of individual words:
         I record someone for half an hour;
         splice that single audio file into hundreds or thousands of single-word chunks;
         export each splice as a separate audio file;
         (would like to) use automator / script to automatically rename the resultant files with an alphanumeric prefix and numerical postfix;
         import each of these files into GarageBand (or StudioOne) individually;
         compress the file to reduce dynamic range;
export the finalized file into a designated folder.
I have some very basic background in programming (primarily MatLab, but very basic dabbling in C), but I know nothing about scripting for Macs. In the long term, I'm interested in learning how to do this, but in the short term I'm looking at a lot of work that needs to get procssed and just need a quick fix for automating so that I don't have to (continue to) do this manually for each file!
In case it is of interest to anyone who may respond: the ultimate goal fo the process is to attain as constant a volume across all the files as possible: I record many different people, in different settings over the course of months or years and was told that compression will help standardize the playback volume. The reason for compressing each file individually is because even within a single recording session, the individual's voice may fluctuate notably as they move closer and further from the mic, or even if there is a single loud noise during recording - it would act as the reference point for compression, even though it was an anamoaly.
Finally, to clarify the questions involved here:
How can I automate the last 4 or so (or more?!) points from the above workflow? or Any suggestions where to find someone who could do this?
Alternatievely: suggestions on standardizing volume playback that does not involve the above process (NB: the standardization has to be as professional as possible, so I don't want to compromise the result for a simpler workflow).
Where can I start to learn more about scripting on the Mac so I can tackle such issues on my own, in the future?
    Kind regards,
    Rax Adam

Yes, the Keynote presentation slides/project is set for 1920x1080, the reason is I'm outputting via a high lumens projector that natively projects at 1920x1080p.
Even though a Macbook Pro does not have a screen that size, the Macbook can send out even larger than 1920x1080, but I am limiting the output to the native screen res of the projector.

  • Garageband Import Horror! Help! Please!

Hi, I've just upgraded to Logic Express 8 and if I try to import a garageband project with anything more than a couple of tracks i get horrible noises and the message 'Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI - sample rate 23086 recognised. Check conflict between logic express and external device.'
I get this message even after disconnecting all external devices.
I'd be very grateful for any advice.

Whoops! The garageband file opened in logic with too many inputs monitored. All is well. Be warned.

  • ITunes to Garageband import at double speed

When I click and drag a spoken word file (WAV) from iTunes to Garageband, it shows up in GB as double speed - Alvin and the Chipmunks-style. Tempo doesn't fix it. I've worked on Garageband before and this has not happened, so it may have to do with my recent upgrade of iTunes to 9.1. I'm on Garageband 3.0.4. Any ideas? You can email directly to: [email protected] Thanks!

  • My garageband imported podcasts are missing the interface?

    Hi Everyone,
I have my website where I post all my original music and covers. I record on Garageband, and use Garageband's export to iWeb as podcast feature to export the music to my website easily. Recently I myself, and a few of my listeners have had issues. When they click on a song, it goes to the song's page and the play box won't have an interface, so you can't start the music or anything. I'll link my site below, just go to the "Music" page, and click on a few songs. Hopefully, you'll see what I mean. It's odd though, it only happens on certain computers, very randomly. But it's more frequent now.
Thanks for any help, I'm releasing an album soon so I can't have my website not working.

I can't replicate your problem on an iMac using Safari.
Using this type of QuickTime player is not the best way to showcase your songs and anybody can easily rip them off.
Either a Flash or Flash with fallback to html5 playlist player would be better...

  • Import Audio into Garageband on iPhone 4s

    Hello,
I am hoping that I can get some assistance with this really annoying issue I am having.
I would like to import my own audio/music files into Garage Band on my iPhone 4s.
Basically I want to be able to plug my iRig in, open GarageBand, import my chosen song/audio stems and jam away.
I am a bit of a novice with this so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers, Simon

  • How do I create ringtones from iTunes songs with Garageband?

I have an iPhone 5s.  Is it possible to convert itunes songs into ringtones with Garageband ios?

Yes, you can, if you sync your iTunes songs to the Music.app.
    See this Help-Page:
    http://help.apple.com/garageband/iphone/2.0/index.html#chs39284d66
Share a GarageBand song as a ringtone or text tone
In the My Songs browser, tap the Select button, then tap the song you want to export (or touch and hold the song).
Tap the Action button , then tap Share Song As Ringtone. The Export Ringtone panel opens, showing the name for the ringtone. By default, the ringtone uses the same name as the song. The maximum length for exported ringtones is 30 seconds. If the exported ringtone exceeds the maximum length, a dialog appears. Tap Continue to have GarageBand shorten the ringtone automatically, or tap Cancel to return to the song so you can shorten it.
To rename the ringtone, tap the name and type a new name.
    Tap Export.
In the Ringtone Export Successful panel, do one of the following:
To return to the My Songs browser, tap OK.
To choose a use for the ringtone, tap Use sound as, then do one of the following:
To use the ringtone as your standard ringtone, replacing the existing ringtone, tap Standard Ringtone.
To use the ringtone as your standard text tone, replacing the existing text tone, tap Standard Text Tone.
To see a list of your contacts, tap Assign to Contact, then tap the contact you want to use the ringtone with.
To return to the My Songs browser without assigning the ringtone, tap Done to return.
The next time you sync your device, the ringtone also appears in the GarageBand File Sharing area in iTunes. You can drag it to the Tones list to add it to your iTunes ringtone library.
And see this page, how to add a song from the Music.app to a track in GarageBand:

  • Edirol R-09 "Joint Stereo" MP3's do not import

Recently acquired an Edirol R-90 digital recorder. It works great, but I cannot import the MP3 files it creates into Garageband for a podcast. The R-09 creates "joint stereo" MP3 files (no option to change this, though I could use larger WAV files)
The MP3 files transfer fine to my Mac, play fine in iTunes or Quicktime, and are seen and can even be previewed in Garageband. But when you drag the file to a track, nothing appears after the Garageband import file(s) progress bar.
If I convert the original file to MP3 again in iTunes, a standard stereo version is created, and that file can be imported without a problem.
Since I cannot surmise any other differences, it appears Garageband cannot import mp3's in a joint stereo format. Can anyone confirm this? There is not an option to turn joint stereo off on the R-09 either...
    Thanks

Ah, something just occurred to me: Is the file extension of your recordings ".MP3"? Then you might change it to lowercase ".mp3" and see what happens.

  • Missing iMovie HD tracks in GarageBand 3: what can be done?

I have a 20 min. project in IMovie HD that utilizes camcorder video, narration and musical tracks derived from ITunes. When I shared the project with GarageBand 3 (wishing to elevate the volume in certain places of the camcorder soundtrack -- having boosted it to the max in IMovie HD but still found it hard to make out the words) the project appeared to lose its music track. That is, NO music at all could be heard.
I WAS able in GarageBand to boost the camcorder sound satisfactorily but without the music I could not go forward and burn a DVD.
Not sure what caused this to happen...
Can GarageBand import multiple soundtracks from iMovie HD?
I have gone as far as I can with sountrack editing in IMovie HD and now wish to add some finishing touches in GarageBand or some other program...
thanks in advance for any help that is received....

I had the same problem but in my case the music track was purchased music from iTunes music store. This will not export to Garageband. For reasons that are not clear to me, iLife will import purchased music into iMovie but not Garageband. If your music did not have DRM, then I don't know what happened.

  • High quality export?

    Hi,
I've been waiting for the GarageBand '11 update just to find out now that some instruments sound wildly different than what my iPad plays.
I had hoped the GarageBand import of iPad project files would be my way to get a version above the quality the iPad exports for AAC, but apparently for my songs it's sounding so different that I hate what I hear (as opposed to what I hear from the iPad itself)
Is there a good way to get high quality renderings of the single tracks out of GB for the iPad? I'm willing to record each track individually in real time, but what kind of connection would I use? Or is there a way to dig into the .band files created by the iPad and get prerendered tracks that the iPad creates when it "optimizes" the track?

  • Hate to burst the bubble of Logic users, but...

There are some very cool things about Logic...
The Node capability can't be understated. Unreal. The loop browser is very functional and a time saver. The VI's and effects are good to great. One standout is the organ emulation. Garageband import capability is nice. The environment is a pretty amazing thing as well...
The notation appears to be superior to anything I've used as well as the chord recognition stuff. I also liked the convenience of the on-screen keyboard. Obviously, the fact that it is MacIntel already is a big plus. There are some cool things about Logic for sure...
But... with all these pluses, after waiting years to try it and finally doing so for the last week - and having worked with sequencers since Passport designs WAY back in the day... Logic is a complete dissapointment.
If you're buying a MacBookPro for portability, better leave plenty of space in your bag for a hub since you'll be bringing along a USB hardware key.
The UI is still butt ugly. Logic has been in the hands of Apple for years and by their own admission (by virtue of them stating "Logic 7 is now 'closer' to Apple GUI conventions" ("closer" being the operative word), it is still not really in-tune with standard Apple GUI.
This is one of the most un-intuitive programs ever. Finding anything is a process and a chore - granted one you could memorize in time. Of course all things have a learning curve, but the point of Mac has always been to be simple. Pro-Tools, Live, Digital Performer and to a certain extent, GarageBand - all intuitive. Logic is not. Thankfully, Apple provides plenty of reading material and there are other very detailed books such as "Logic 7 Power", etc.
Live is a LOT of fun. GarageBand is fun. Pro-Tools - does what it does and not much else (notation or advanced midi editing anyone?) But flat out... Logic users are really doing themselves a disservice if they don't look into MOTU Digital Performer. Time to check into Apple's return policy (maybe this is one plus of the hardware key!)
    Just my opinion.
    ~dougieb

Just make sure you give it a real spin before
    returning or selling it.
These aren't initial impressions, but solid ones after a week of spinning it on a few different tracks and with a full compliment of reference material.
Logic is definitely not an intuitive program, and it
doesn't make the best first impression. But if you
dig into it, it's incredibly powerful.
No doubt there. The environment and transform functions are very deep. You don't even need to dig deep to see the power that is there - that I never disputed. It is powerful - credit where it is due.
If ease of use and shallow learning curve are more
important than power and features, than DP or PTLE
    are probably better choices.
LOL... PTLE - and really PT for that matter - as you probably know, are a joke.
Don't get me wrong, I was able to do everything in Logic I can do in other platforms, but honestly it just made DP stand out all the more. Sure... it can all be done, but experience or not, I'm betting that it can be done faster in DP. If time is money (and for me it is), then I'd have to go with DP. Also, other than the many pluses I mentioned for Logic, I'm failing to see any area DP is deficient in power compared to Logic. If haven't even gotten into areas that DP is clearly superior. If you know of any, I am happily open to elightenment.
If I can have power AND ease of use, I'm going to take both for the sake of spontainaity and efficiency. ****, if you want the ULTIMATE "power" while completely negating ease of use, you could always formulate some sort of command line editor/sequencer. :-P
No one screwdriver fits all screws. Unfortunately, I have to work will ALL kinds - but the fact is that I was really dissapointed by Logic, because I REALLY wanted it to be better. I really WANTED it to work for me, but knowing what I know about other softwares, I realize that I am used to a cleaner tool - and I think that most anyone that was to try DP after Logic would see it the same way.
Trust me... MOTU the company is a huge pain in the *** and has this ability to make their customers feel completely unappreciated. I REALLY wish I could accept that Logic as a superior product so I could leave them, but so far, having now done my week of time with Logic while being used to DP, I'm completely underwhelmed.
And for the record, this isn't a case of "well I use this more so I know it better". I have to work on all kinds of sequencers - MC-500's even. Akai MPC's, Cubase, etc. I've even used "Notator" on occasion.
I just seriously think that Logic users are doing themselves a disservice by not trying DP as I did with Logic. There are some great things about Logic. I wish it was all there for me.
Maybe Apple could just buy MOTU next.

  • Logic Pro 9 won't import GarageBand songs from iPad

This used to be a simple process. Import the song via iTunes from the iPad to the Mac, save the ".band" file to the desktop, click on the song and it would open in Logic Pro 9. I can no longer get iOS GarageBand songs, new or old, to open in Logic on the Mac. Logic keeps crashing. When I click on the ".band" file, try to open it from within Logic, or try dragging onto the Logic icon, the only option I get is to save the file that I'm trying to open. If I save it and then try to open it, there is nothing there but an empty arrange window with the name of the song at the top. If I click on all of the advanced options when saving, Logic crashes and says it needs to be updated yet there are no available updates. It's already up to date. Is it suggesting that I purchase Logic X bc the iPad has the latest version of GarageBand? One problem there is, I can no longer open the old files, that opened previously on the same Mac, etc., that were recorded on the 8-track version of GarageBand. Any ideas? Should I re-install Logic Pro 9?

Hey, thanks. I have GB 2.0.1 (which is probably linked to GB 10) on the iPad 2 and LP 9.1.8 on the Mac. I take the iPad on the road and sketch out ideas then transfer them to the Mac. I have found a way to transfer the audio manually by opening the project folder and copying 1 track at a time, but that does me no good as all of those audio tracks get replaced anyway. I want to keep the MIDI files and know how to access them in the ".band" file or change the language in the file to make GB 2.0.1 open in LP9, if any one knows how to do that.
Do you know how to downgrade to an older version of GB for iOS? The one purchased on my app store is 2.0.1, unfortunately. Where/ how can I get an older version? Thank you.
As for buying LP 10, my Mac won't support it as it's 32-bit.

Save the file from Gmail onto your computer and add it to iTunes.  How you save from Gmail is a Gmail question (their own support pages), not an iTunes question.
