GarageBand in Mountain Lion
Hello.
Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, GarageBand has not been fully functional (I can work with it, but certain functions, such as track editing, are not always available).
Is there someplace I can download a Mountain Lion-conpatible version of GarageBand?
I'm reluctant to download the newest version of GarageBand because of some poor reviews I've read. Also, that would require an upgrade to Mavericks, which, again, I'm apprehensive about making that my OS because I'm concerned some current functionality might be lost.
Thank you.
What is your current GarageBand version? If it is any version of GarageBand '11, version 6.0.x, you can download the update to GarageBand '11, version 6.0.5 from the support page: GarageBand 6.0.5 Download
If you are using an earlier version, you cannot update for free from the App Store and need a paid upgrade, but you cannot buy it from the AppStore. Try to find a boxed retail version of iLife '11 at Amazon or at a local Apple Retail store.
Also, that would require an upgrade to Mavericks, which, again, I'm apprehensive about making that my OS because I'm concerned some current functionality might be lost.
The functionality change when going from Mt. Lion to Mavericks is not as dramatic, as the upgrade from Snowleopard to Lion has been. But the newest GarageBand 10.0 is a completely different application - and older audio units and VST plug-ins will not work any longer. So you are right to be cautious. But you can leave GarageBand '11 installed after upgrading to the newest version.

How to re-install GarageBand on Mountain Lion?
I need to re-install GarageBand on my macbook. I'm using Mountain Lion, but the only installation CD's I have are for Snow Leopard (since I bought Mountain Lion digitally).
Is there any way to install GarageBand as a single application, or do I have to completely re-install Mountain Lion OSX?seedle18 wrote:

Question:
Did you previously purchase GB from the MAS...
Also... Updating from SL to ML does not upgrade the iLife components... you only get the OS X. -
Garageband and mountain lion confiics
can anyone please tell me why none of the controls or any sounds do not work at all since installing mountain lion on my 24" imac everything comes on and i ca play and use my amp to play through, but i have no control over garageband sounds or settings
I'd try HangTime's fixes for "oddball problems" first, i.e. delete GB's preferences and repairing permissions on your computer, as described in the FAQ, see:
http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/FAQPages/OddBallProbs.html
The user library is hidden in Mt. Lion Mac OS X 10.8.3. To reveal it, use the Finder's "Go" menu.
Click somewhere on your empty Desktop to bring the Finder forward, then you'll see "Go" in the Finder's main menu bar.
Then hold down the options key ⌥ until "library" appears in the drop down menu. Click Library to open. Remove the file
your Home Folder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.garageband.plist.

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I repurchased Garageband and I can't get passed the complete installation. I've read through several posts that all reference the "com.apple.garageband.plist" solution. I don't seem to have the referenced .plist. Any solutions or suggestions?
Did you upgrade from SnowLeopard?
I can't get passed the complete installation
What exactly is happening? Is GarageBand trying to download over and over again?
all reference the "com.apple.garageband.plist" solution. I don't seem to have the referenced .plist.
The property list stores your preferences, but also the settings from the last run of the application. If that file is corrupted in some way, you might see third behaviour.
You must have this file, for it will be recreated automatically, if it is missing, or you have a permissions problem with your user library.
Perhaps you did look in he wrong place.
in MacOS 10.7. or later the User Library is hidden. To find the Preferences Files use the Finder's "Go" menu:
Quit GarageBand, if it is running.
Click onto you Desktop to bring the Finder forward.
In the Finder Menu press "Go" and hold down the "option/alt" key, until your user library appears in the drop-down menu
Select "Library" and in the Finder window that opens navigate to the "Prederences" folder; move com.apple.garageband.plist to the Desktop.
Log off and on again (don't skip that step!). Retry GarageBand and see if it GarageBand is now downloading the missing content properly.
If that does not fix the problem, post back and explain in more detail what the download problem is.
Why did you "repurchase" GarageBand? If you already owned GarageBand '11, it should be unnecessary.

Garageband Wonky after Mountain Lion Install
I just upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard and now Garageband '09 (5.1) is acting weird. It will let me start a new project but after working with the software instruments for a bit, Garageband will no longer let me add effects. The effects slots don't even show up. Then the icon for whatever instrument I'm using disappears completely. Then, if I keep trying to work, Garageband crashes. Please help me out here if anyone has any answers.
post in the GarageBand forum.

I cannot seem to update Garageband 11 on my new MacBook Pro retina (Mountain Lion)
Hi,
I've just bought a new 15" MBP retina (Mountain Lion). I have Garageband '11 pre-installed.
When i try to add additonal instruments Garageband opens a prompt box and asks if I want to update now or later. I have tried both options and neither work - the app store opens but it cannot find any updates.
Any help would be much appreciated.
thanksSometimes you need to reload the updates page at the App Store after you selected to "Update Later":
From the App Store main menu bar: Store > Reload page
If that does not bring the update forward, see my post here:
Re: Can't download loops for Garage Band '11

Os X Mountain Lion and Logic Pro, Garageband Audio Recording Driver Update
HI just purchased the os x mountain lion upgrade....and ever since my recording software like logic pro and even garageband audion recording is given me a problem .....ive been getting loud static noise during audio recording.....is there an update that will fix these issues...need to know

How do you stop Mountain Lion from making endless copies and backups of everything?!
I already have a similar topic on this when I needed to figure out how to stop Mountain Lion from making endless copies of my text edit files and I was going to try the disabling of it that someone in that thread suggested, but I can't find where the Versions backups are being stored.
Anyway, tonight I cam across a new problem, when I went into "about this Mac" and looked at my Storage, I had almost 1gb of data in the "backups" section. I just happened to have Finder open when I went into the Time Machine in the status bar and when it entered Time Machine, I had dozens of copies of my desktop. Thing is, I don't have my Time Machine hard drive connected and I don't have a Time Capsule router/hard drive. And don't give me this garbage about how "It's not real backups, it's just a snapshot" or whatever, because the ONLY things that I have stored on my computer that I have altered since I got mountain lion is two Text Edit files and the Finder Desktop (and yes, I have checked almost all the programs I use, and of the things that Time Machine will open in, those are the only things that have backups listed that I can access) and almost 1gb is being taken up completely needlessly with the computer backing up things onto itself. Obviously these are more than just snapshots and are obviously the real files because after throwing EVERYTHING on my desktop into a file, that file is only 3.8mb in size, so that almost 1GB in backups is coming from SOMEWHERE.
The solution I aluded to in my first sentence also depends on going into the Terminal to make each individual app stop auto saving Versions, however, since my desktop is being backed up, there's no program to stop Mountain Lion from doing that.
Can anyone help me figure out how to make it stop backing up? Seriously, almost 1 gb is being totally wasted on a series of desktop items that are 3.8mb in size, one Text Edit file that is 250kb in size, and another text edit file that is 41kb in size. What person in Apple would possibly have thought this endless backing up of files onto the main hard drive would have been a good idea? So in a year if I did nothing but go on the internet, save one picture to one file on my desktop and did nothing else with my computer, would I have 200 gb of desktop backups that the computer saved onto itself? Are you kidding me? OR failing that, can anyone tell me how to find this damned backup file and delete it? I'm not an idiot, I know how to plug in a hard drive or flash drive and backup my information, I don't need my computer to be making hundreds of copies of every single file on my computer that I change slightly onto itself that not only needlessly eats up it's own space, but if the hard drive died, all those "backups" would be gone too because it wrote the backups to itself.
I am so frustrated by this totally ridiculous and wasteful "feature" they put in, it does nothing but waste hard drive space with it's hundreds of copies of everything you alter slightly. And I am absolutely not starting any video editing projects until I figure out how to turn this off. If around 4mb of total text and desktop backups add up to almost 1gb in a few weeks, what the heck is a video editing project going to end up in with size? Am I the only one completely flustered by this ridiculousness? Is there any point in writing into Apple to complain or are they just going to say "No, we're brilliant, we think this is an amazing feature so you just have to deal iwth it and when your hardd drive fills up, too bad, jerk!"?? Help! Thanks!Well as I pointed out in my post, "Sadly, my Text Edit documents are still all there, every single time I opened them and made a small change, there is another copy stretching all the way back to the day I installed Mountain Lion." so if you can explain to me how July 26 - Aug 16 is a week, I will concede that it is a good idea. Short of that, no I have been capable of making my own backups since I was 16 years old (16 years ago) I don't need my computer to endlessly do it for me in a way I am completely unable to shut off. That's what I have external hard drives, flash drives, a DVD burner, Drop Box, E-mail (as in emailing copies to myself) and icloud for. If I am doing something and I don't have access to a single one of those options, I don't know why I brought my computer with me in the first place. And I don't see how you can say it's an illusory gain in disk space, hundreds of copies of text documents, garageband files, Final Cut files, Motion Files and basically any program that makes files onto my comptuer that I can myself make incremental changes to, those all need to be stored somehow. Again, if you can explain to me how July 26 - Aug 16 is a week, I will agree with you that that is a good thing because IF it only saved for a week, it wouldn't be an issue. Sadly, no matter how many links you post, I still have text edit backups stretching from today back to July 26. They're not going away and I have no reason to beleive any other file I edit is going to go away either since they haven't been. They're all there eating up HD space and this imaginary "week" limit is simply not coming into effect. I hate it and there needs to be a simple way to simply shut it off. I didn't spend hundreds of dollars on external drives just for my main hard drive to be filled up with hundreds un useless, undeletable backups of stuff I already have backed up.

Restoring files from time machine backup made using Mountain Lion
Hi Guys
I have trawled through the Internet and found many sources of help for some of my headaches but still can't help the problem. So here I am.....
I have an early MacBook Pro 13" that came with snow leopard. I immediately updated to lion which was a disaster being so slow etc. Then I upgraded to mountain lion which was pretty good. I always upgraded and never clean installed.
I have been running time machine on a Qnap nas (model 212) which I must add has been a headache to get going in itself.
Anyways I recently upgraded to mavericks which made my MacBook grind to a halt. I mean even the beachball was struggling. To the point after 2 weeks I couldn't get anything done on it!
So I decided to do a clean install. Did that and then tried to do restore files using migration assistant at first log in. Turns out my back is corrupted!
Now I know I have a good complete backup of my mountain lion system just 2 weeks old on my nas. Only problem is that mavericks won't let me get to that when I try to upgrade from that drive as it just says no OSX backup available.
Now I am trying to install snow leopard cleanly and the try and upgrade to mountain lion hoping that it would recognise the mountain lion backup on my nas.
Can you please let me know if I am going in the right direction?
Any help appreciated guys.
ThanksEverything since the fresh install, has to be done manually from my Backup drive. Wasn't, or isn't TM supposed to do that automatically (for example restoring iTunes, is it supposed to restore just the application or all the folders with it as well?). Why, when I select a folder with many subfolders in it (and eventually the files I want within) does it say that the original whatever doesn't exist anymore at that location, then I have the option to choose a new location or to recreate the enclosing folders? I Click on recreate but when I do, just the top level shows (the first folder, for example, garageband). No more folders are shown inside, despite there being plenty of files in my backup version. Am I misunderstanding TM's powers/capabilities here? Is it supposed to be this frustrating and difficult?
Everything that I want has to be done manually it seems. I don't understand it. The other thing is that it denies me access (I don't have the privileges or whatever it says) to move the files directly via the mounted disk on the desktop rather than entering TM. So, I can't go into TM and click restore, I can't manually open the mounted drive and drag files (denies me permission). The only way I've been able to do anything successfully is to archive the **** folder/s or files.
Any help or direction, or a manual on how to use or tutorial on Time machine would be great. Someone point me in the right direction please, this is highly annoying and I am debating switching back to Leopard (having issues with iChat in Snow Leopard).

Can't restore iLife after reinstalling Mountain Lion
After I erase the internal disk and reinstall Mountain Lion, I followed this instruction which Apple provides officially to restore my iLife:
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion
If you erase install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion on a new Mac that shipped with OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion installed, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start (up) from OS X.
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.
However, when I finish #5, I can't find my iLife apps are listed in that "Purchases" tab. Can anyone help me solve this problem?http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Yes, that is what is supposed to happen.
I'd contact MAS support -
I lost iLife after reinstalling Mountain Lion
I bought my iMac in April last year, it is the 21.5 inch mid/late 2011 iMac (if I'm not wrong), the thing is I used to install lots of things in here until I decided it was worth to erase all the unimportant content, but to make myselfe sure I decided to back up in an external hard drive everything I thought it was important and then I proceded to reboot the system and enter in restore mode while startup (using cmd + r, as you may know).. Once in there I went to disk utilities and erased my HDD and after that I proceeded to reinstall Mountain Lion. Everything went OK, I entered my Apple ID and Password and the installation went through without any further problems. When I started to reconfigure everything I noticed iPhoto was missing, so I inmediately checked if iMovie and GarageBand were there, but they were not. So I logged in the Mac AppStore but there said I should bought them (which actually makes sense, because I got iLife with my iMac) but I honestly don't know what to do. I used to use a lot these softwares, and it would be nice to have them back.. Do you have any idea of what should I do?
I also would like to add that my iMac came with OS X Lion, I bought Mountain Lion personally.. if that has something to do with..
Thanks for your attention,
PD: Please bear in mind that I'm from Argentina, any mistake you can found wasn't intencionally, sorry if you happen to find manyThank you very much for your help and your time, this problem was in deed very simple to solve, I tried to click the buy app button just to see what happens and it turned out that was the right thing to do.
If any one has this problem here is a screenshot that will more or less tell you what you got to do: -
I had iLife pre-installed on my aluminium Macbook 2009 with OSX Leopard on it. My hard drive broke but got most of the info off it and just installed snow Leopard on to a new drive and then downloaded and installed Mountain Lion over it. Now I don't have iLife anymore. How do I get it back?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mac OS X doesn't come with iLife applications, so you have to install them manually after installing Mac OS X.
Insert the Applications disc or Mac OS X Install Disc 2 DVD and install iLfe applications. Then, open > Software Update, and install the latest update. If you want, you can purchase iMovie, GarageBand and iPhoto in the App Store, so you will get the most recent version -
I just bought a Mac Mini (late 2012) with a 1TB HDD and I'm planning to install a second drive, an SSD (Samsung 840 evo) and create the Fusion Drive, and I have a couple of questions:
1- I've read lots of articles on how to do this but I'm not sure if I have to buy Mountain Lion from the app store (to reinstall the OS after I install the second drive) since I'm not able to see it on the "Purchased" list of apps, or if I can just reinstall OS X with OS X Utilities.
2- I read somewhere that if I make my own Fusion Drive when I reinstall OS X I will lose iLife, is this true? Or will I be able to redownload it from the store? I really don't want to lose iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand and I'm confused about it.
Thanks in advance for any help and information you can give me!Thankyou very much lllaass, that's exactly what I wanted to be sure about!
