Garageband in the music industry

I know that there are a lot of DAW's out there that are used for professional-level production and recording. I just wanted to know if it was possible to use garageband itself in the industry. If I wanted to producer or write music for artists or movies, could Garageband be sufficient? What else would I possibly need?

A couple of years ago Oasis recorded an entire album in Garage Band. They said it freed up their creative process (or something similar). Probably something worth googling.
Also, a few years ago Trent Reznor released his song The Hand That Feeds in garageband format for anyone with a Mac to remix as they please. I had a lot of fun with that one.
Sounds sufficient to me ; )

  • Why does emailing a song from iPad Garageband distort the music?

When using Garageband for iPad (which is amazing by the way), when I export to iTunes, the sound is perfect.  When I use the email export function, I find that there are almost always often distortions, artifacts, or ommissions.
My process is usually to make the song, make a screenshot, switch to photoshop, rotate the screenshot, go to Photos, copy the screenshot, return to Garageband, export to email, wait for the encoding to take place, paste the photo beneath the song in the email, then send the email (usually to posterous).
If I export through my mac in iTunes it seems to work flawlessly.

I've found that the AAC file exported through iTunes or through email are exactly the same... however... I've noticed this: Sometimes when I first boot up iPad garageband and start playing a song, I get distortion, dropped notes or ends of notes. If I stop the song, rewind and play again, it sounds fine. Just recently I booted up garageband and WITHOUT opening or playing the song, I exported the AAC (.m4a) file to iTunes and also emailed it to myself. Both versions had chopped notes, stuttering, etc. throughout the whole song!!! On a hunch, I went back to garageband, opened the song and played it. Sure enough, at the beginning it played like sh*t. When I touched the 'go to beginning' button and played again, it played fine. I then closed the song and exported as the above procedure. Both files played fine!
Maybe it's my earbuds but the imported songs sound duller than when listening to the originals on the iPad.

  • Is there a way to creat a hard break in a song, followed by a measure or so of silence, then bring the music back in within the garageband format?

Is there a way to creat a hard break in a song, followed by a measure or so of silence, then bring the music back in within the garageband format?

I am not quite sure what you want to achieve, but you can
    select all tracks at once,
move the cursor to the measure where you want to cut your song
Press cmd-T to cut all tracks at the same position
select all regions in all tracks to the right of the cut and drag them one measure to the right
Alternately you might show the Master  Track (Main menu; Track -> Show Master Track) and use the Master Volume automation curve to silence all tracks at once for exactly one measure.

  • Garageband - "System Overload. The audio engine was not able to process all required data in time. (-10011). Im making a song on Garageband and I have recorded guitar, drums recorded on the musical keyboard, and vocals. It now says this, and won't play.

Im making a song on Garageband and I have recorded guitar, drums recorded on the musical keyboard, and vocals. It now says this, and won't play. Ive worked so hard on this and I don't know how to fix it. I am not very skilled or knowledgable in computers and barely know how to operate Garageband as it is. I have many different tracks in this song for different drums and beats. Please someone tell me how to fix this, I'm not even finished it! And again I am not very informed on how to work computers as well as most of you are, just saying. thanks!!!
P.S.: In my about this mac thing, it says i have version 10.9.1, 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and Memory is 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

    Could you do this?
    Go to Finder
    Go to Applications
    Go to Utilities folder
    Launch Activity Monitor app
go to its Memory tab on top
tell us what you see at the very bottom?
Here is a sample of mine.
I bet your page/swap amount will be huge.
If there is not enough RAM, OS X temporarily stores RAM data on the harddrive and tries to retrieve it back into RAM when needed, unfortunately that is so slow that GB throws an error as it cannot play it all in real time.

  • Questions about the music included in iMovie/iLife

    Hi guys!
Im making a small presentation movie for my small companies website. I've added some tunes from the library in iMovie (I know there is free royalty-free music of there but i didnt find what I was looking for). From what i've heard the songs are royalty-free, right? But not maybe for commercial use?
Then i read something on this link (http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=3846f9dc40458d5a&hl=en) meaning that I am allowed to use the tracks in movies or in Garageband arrangements for commercial use, but as long as the music clips are no longer than 30 seconds, and that i write some kind of credits to the artist or Apple.
Is this true? Anyone with an answer? I've searched for more license notes about iMovie but have'nt found anything.
Thank you so much guys for helping me of here!

I would add that sometimes a record company will claim ownership of one of the Apple jingles. YOu can contest this with YouTube, but do not say that you own the music. Say that you are licensed to use the track by Apple Computer and attach a link to 2C above.
Use of credits or attribution in the YouTube comments may help, but usually the process of the record company claiming it is automated. The comments will help only after YouTube reviews it.
I found that some minor rap artist was using one of the Apple Jingles in his rap record and the record company was flagging all videos that used this jingle. I was never able to convince YouTube that I had a right to this music. Very frustrating. You only get one chance to explain to YouTube why you have the right. After that, if the record company still contests it, YouTube will assume the record company is right and offer you a path that includes going to federal court to prove your case.
Youtube is horrible on this, but maybe they have to be given the large number of videos added every day.

    Hi
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an audio-CD .aiff
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provocing it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.
    176x144
    480x360
    640x480
    720x540    960x540
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In
    6. Ed Hanna
Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies—except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format—that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • How good is the music notation facility in Logic Express 9?

The music notation feature in GarageBand is frustratingly inadequate. For instance, using a piano keyboard it is impossible - as far as I can tell - to show notes below middle C as being played by the right hand. This means that some very basic chords appear in the notation as being physically impossible to play. For instance, if I play C1 & E2 in the left hand and G2, C3 And E3 in the right, the music notation shows the left hand as C1, E2 and G2. I can't stretch that far!
If I upgrade from GarageBand to Logic Express 9, will the music notation facility enable me to print what I play?

Not without a lot of trouble, and not in an easily readable way. E.g., if you put a quaver over two semiquavers (thats an eighth over two sixteenths), the quaver will be split in two, so you'll see 4 semiquavers, two of which are bound. Changing a note's staff is possible, but can lead to ugly results. Logic Express (and I think Pro too) doesn't have a ready-to-print scoring facility.
I can advise you to use Logic for recording. There you can edit it until all the notes are correct, and then export the midi file to e.g. the freeware MuseScore. That gives you great control over the score. If that doesn't suit you, you'll have to move on to Finale, Sibelius, Overture, ...

  • Export from QuickTime: Just the music

Posting this under QuickTime and GarageBand2.
Is it possible to export just the music from QuickTime Player? If so, how?
To, for example, iTunes. And/or burn song to a CD?
Brought in some music I created via keyboard and a music program called Band-in-a-Box. Plays perfectly in Quicktime, but I want to get it into iTunes, or burn it to a CD.
When going through GarageBand 2, I lose some of the original sounds and effects I created.
It comes into QuickTime as MIDI.
I'm using QuickTime Player 7.5(v149.5) Computer specs are below.
    Thanks.

MIDI isn't really "music" (in the CD sense).
QuickTime Pro could export what it "hears" into an AIFF file (like those found on CD's).

  • Copying the music from an itunes movie to itunes music

Hi this may have been answered but I have a number of video clips from youtube which I've copied into itunes movies. What I want to do is now take the music from those video clips and copy it into music on itunes. Is that possible???
    Thanx

After posting and re-reading, I just realized you are running windows 7. The QuickTime tip may still work, nix the iMovie and GarageBand tips, they are Apple only software.
    Sorry for the error.
I'm sure you can find some video editing shareware at a site like Version Tracker to do the trick.

  • How to open m4a file in GarageBand from iTunes music?

How do I open m4a file in GarageBand from iTunes music (first recorded on iPhone Voice Recorder). I am recording my foreign language teacher and want to be able to replay at slower pace than she speaks.

  • Emptying the Music folder

My first time on this forum, so forgive me if this is an old topic. I have an excess of tracks in my iTunes Music folder. I would like to clear it out completely. But if I do, I wonder if the same tracks would automatically clear from the individual folders. Any thoughts please?

Many of the files in my Music folder are duplicates of personally produced material, all of which is duplicated there when I send it from GarageBand to a folder, which means that most of the files in the Music folder are redundant. There are a great many commercial tracks there that I no longer want too. Naturally, I don't want to lose the music in the individual folders, so thanks for clearing that up for me.
As for an 'excess'... the status bar at the bottom of the Music window reads thus: 2552 songs, 9.7 days, 54.22 GB. That has to be pretty excessive, wouldn't you agree?
Is there any other way to delete continuous batches of tracks than to deselect them one by one?

  • How can you let GB show the music sheet of what you've played

    Hello,
I heard that it is possible to see the music sheet of what you've played in GB.
Does somebody know how to do that.
    Greetz Indy

    Hi,
You can view a Software Instrument region in notation view.
Select the track, open your "Track Editor", look in the section to the left, at the bottom, there are two choices - one is lit (has two bars on it). The other is a note. Click on it to select "Notation View".
You can edit your track in this view if you want to.
(There is unfortunately no way at this time to print this notation out from within GarageBand.)
