GarageBand instruments in Logic 8

In GarageBand I have access to a lot of instruments that I can find in my Logic Pro 8's Media - Library. Is there a way to add them?
Thanks!

In Logic's GUI, in the Inspector there a box labeled I/O called the Instrument Slot. If you click this it will open up a list of all validated AU plugins. In this list, you'll see GarageBand Instruments.

  • Jam Packs and "Garageband Instruments" when reinstalling Logic?

What's the proper procedure when it comes to Jam Packs and 3rd party Apple Loops libraries when reinstalling Logic and OS X?
I'm keeping my Apple Loops on a separate drive and know that I can just drag them to the Loop Browser after reinstalling Logic. However, by doing so, I don't think I'll be getting the "Garageband Instruments" that are installed with the Jam Packs and some 3rd party Apple Loops libraries. Is that correct? If so, what's the best way to deal with this? Always installing all Apple Loops from the disks or perhaps saving a folder (which one?) with the Garageband Instruments before re-installing OS X?
When I last installed Logic, and told the installer to install the Jam Packs on an external drive, they were still installed on the system drive! Does anyone know why? Now what's the best way to move the Apple Loops? What I've done in the past is installing them to their default location, and then creating an alias in Home:Library:Audio:Apple Loops folder that points to the new location on the external drive. Is that the way to go or is another way better?
Any input or help would be greatly appreciated.

Jam packs consist of two types of content. Loop content will go to where you choose to install it (an external drive if you wish). Instrument content has to go to the GB library, for a number of reasons, and the GB library will be on your system disk under Application Support/Garageband.
So backup your GB library in addition to your Logic related stuff.
It is possible to move much (but not all) of the heavy Instrument content to an external drive too, but there are gotchas with this.

  • Garageband sounds vs Logic Express

    Hi All,
I'm new here and I apologize if this has been covered in an existing post. I've searched a lot and not found an answer to my specific question...
I've read that the loops that come with Logic Express sound better than those that come with Garageband. I understand that Logic's instruments sound better. I'm thinking about upgrading to Logic Express for this reason (and others).
But what I would like to know, is upon upgrading to Logic Express, will my existing Garageband loops sound any better?
If a Garageband loop is just a simple audio sample, then I wouldn't expect any improvement. But if the loop is based on a MIDI instrument - then would it make sense that Logic could provide a better "engine" for all those existing instruments?
To take it one step further, how do the Jam Packs apply to this? I'm thinking of getting one of them. If the instruments in the Jam Pack only sound as good as Garageband instruments, then is it really worth getting it if you have Logic?
    Any advice is much appreciated!
macboook core 2 duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi noeqplease
I think my problem is that I still don't understand exactly what makes up a "loop".
If a loop is just an audio sample, then I understand why it will sound the same using any software. I also understand that Logic will be able to get more out of that sample - because it has more tools to apply to that sample.
However, take a look at this quote from the following Jam Pack review article:
    http://www.tweakheadz.com/reviewof_garagebandjampacks.htm
"In a typical Jam Pack you get loops AND audio instruments. The "blue" loops are straight audio loops and are typically of high quality. They can be stretched, compressed, effected, like any other audio track. But the "green" loops in the browser are actually an audio instruments with a MIDI track associated."
After reading that, it sounds like some loops are really just MIDI files which point to a certain instrument. Therefore, if you get all new (and better) instruments with Logic, then maybe all those loops will sound better.
So here's where I ask again:
-is it true that some loops aren't hard samples, but rather depend on the quality of your instrument synthesizer?
-if so, will installing Logic make those loops sound better? (i.e. does Logic have better instruments to use for all the old Garageband loops? - OR does Logic only provide new and better instruments for the new loops included with Logic?)
-if so, what % of Jam Pack loops are "green" and would get the benefit of being used with Logic vs GB?
    thanks again!!

  • Sync Problems - Importing Garageband FIles Into Logic Studio 8

    Hi Guys,
I was wondering if anyone can PLEASE HELP?!!
I'm having a real headache when I open my Garageband files in Logic Studio 8 - most of the real instrument tracks end up out of sync with the software tracks!!
For example, I opened a song in Logic 8 (mostly Apple loops/beats & software synths - but with some rhythm guitar parts and bass) and the guitars and bass are a few beats in front of the rest of the song.
The same thing happens (sometimes) with the vocal tracks too...
It's become a real nightmare for me - I'm due to go into a professional studio in a few weeks time to start mixing my (Garageband) songs (in Logic). Aaaargh! Pressure!
A previous advisor kindly advised me that I may be exhausting my Mac's processing capabilities.
However, I use an iMac (250GB, 3GB of RAM, 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo). It's only around 1 year old - so I'm sure it should be man enough for the job.
However, the studio I am using to mix my album have the latest up-to-date MacPro's - and when they open the Garageband files I've supplied to them (on dvd) in Logic 8....they are having the same problem. The tracks are out of sync...
I've supplied them with both the Garageband files (as an exported project) and the imported Logic 8 version...
    I just don't get it.
The songs play okay in Garageband. (Ok, I get the occasional processor warnings....so I lock the tracks, problem solved).
I'n not using any fancy plug-ins.
I don't have any other applications running.
I'm not sure what the RPM of my iMac hard drive is (can anyone advise me how I can find this out please?) but I'm sure that can't be an issue either....
If anyone can please help, I'll be so grateful.
I've been working on my album for 11 months now - and I'm about to go into the studio to mix it in late August.....and after all my hard work, I'd be so relieved if anyone can help me avert a catastrophe!
Many thanks folks (in advance) if you can help.....

And it's the same in Logic?
Also, if you have plugins on the main output or busses - what is your PDC setting in your audio prefs? Make sure it's set to "All".
Yes, it's the same in Logic (44.100).
No sure about PDC settings etc as I am not familiar with Logic.
However, I'm not using any plug-ins - and when I check under Logic/preferences/audio/general - "Plug in delay" is set to "Compensation: All"
(Sorry to sound like a novice, but as I mentioned in my original post, I'm not familiar with Logic........but the studio where I'm taking my album to be mixed is)!

  • Plug-ins not available when opening Garageband song with Logic-Pro 7.0.1

    Can anyone help?
Whilst on the move recently I found myself composing a piece using Garageband. However when I got back to the studio and attempted to open the song using Logic Pro 7.0.1 I get:
Core Audio: Plug-in "BassAmpSi" not available! then
Core Audio: Plug-in "Hybrid Bas" not available!
As these must be Garageband instruments I don't understand why they're "not available" or what to do to make them available.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks everybody!

I googled this topic and found a Logic forum - they said you should update your software to 7.1, then the problem vanishes.

  • How do I set up an instrument in Logic that can control various perimeters at a time?

    Hey guys,
I want to make a composition, using the guidelines from an amazing John Cage composition called 'Variations II'. The guidelines involve measuring out a set of lines and dots, the measurements each relating to a sound's frequency, amplitude, timbre, duration, structue, and point of occurence within a piece of music.
So, I want to create an instrument in logic that will allow me to control a sound's; frequency (pitch), amplitude (volume), timbre (tonal colour/quality), duration, structure (how many notes within each section of music), and point of occurence within the piece (when it is played). I know this is an epic ask! But I also know it can be done.
Someone else has done it in Native Instruments.
    https://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=userlibrary&L=1&type=0&ulbr=1&pl view=detail&patchid=5281
Any advice on how to get this going?
    Thanks so much!

The example you gave was done with Reaktor, one of it's features is a type of instrument construction kit. Logic does not have tools to "Create" instruments. It does have built in instruments which have control over frequency/pitch, amplitude/volume, timbre/color, duration,..etc.
Logic is more like a recording studio in a box, with an included set of instruments.
Do you use Logic? Are you familiar with creating music in Logic, sequencing, using a MIDI Keyboard controller?

  • U201Ccom.apple.garageband.cs\U201D - Logical end of file reached...

    Hello,
I'm getting two errors. Hopefully someone can help with one or both.
    1) U201Ccom.apple.garageband.cs\U201D - Logical end-of-file reached during read operation.
From other posts, I've tried to go into Library -> Prefs -> but, there's no file there to delete. I also have reinstalled Garageband, with the same issue popping up.
    2) "Garageband unexpectedly quit." - Not sure what's going on here. Anytime I close the program, it has a 2 second lock-up, and then the yellow triangle with the exclamation point pops up with that message?
I do not have any 3rd party apps or add-on's.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,

  • Why can't I open garageband files in Logic

Loaded Logic pro 9 last evening and whew that took a while.
I started trying to open Garageband files in logic and
it made the attempt but didn't get very far. The progress
window open but there is no progress. Just the beach ball
and finally force quit of Logic.
Logic works on it own, and Garageband works on it's own
    just fine.
Another question, Do I need to install the Jam Packs I used with
Garageband into Logic. I also have a few third party loops,
should I install those as well or will Logic see all those loops
when I finally get logic to open my Garageband files?
Of course many thanks in advance.

I have Garageband 5.1 and yes Ilife 09 as well.
As an Update, I checked off all the items that were
unchecked in my second installation using the install
disc. Then I restarted the computer.
This allowed some success with opening some of the
garageband projects in logic. However 3 of the projects
still refuse to open in logic.
These 3 files seem to have one thing in common. When I try
to open them in logic they get as far as the progress
bar but then they all stop at a point where the words
" channel eq" or "noise gate" is displayed and then I
get the beach ball followed by force quit.
I suspect the problem may be associated with plugins.

  • Opening Garageband Project In Logic Express

I have successfully opened / saved a garageband project in Logic Express and everything seems to have come over fine. In the arrange window, the 'Input' button is highlighted on many tracks (the button next to mute, solo, etc.). Should the 'Input' be selected or de-slected? It seems like its automatically sending it to a Bus. Any suggestions / basic ground rules?

Well, the Input monitoring button activated live input monitoring. So, if it is activated (and you have selected input monitoring in the preferences, of course), Logic will pick up any audio signal coming in via the selected inputs and feeds it into the channelstrip, even if it's not running. You can also play along without recording. Recording, however, activates monitoring either way.
Maybe you have an open mic, which might produce feedback or other disturbing noises. Turn off input monitoring (and disarm record, of course) to mute the live input monitoring.
Basically, only the channels you need to hear should have Input monitoring activated.

  • Does anyone know how to separate vocals from instrumentation in logic 9 ?

Hi, does anybody know how to seperate a vocal line from the instrumentation in logic 9 ? I tried splitting and inverting the audio but I cant get it to work.

  • Can Garageband instruments be imported to LE's library?

I'm having a rough go of setting up an external keyboard as a midi instrument. As a temporary workaround I thought of setting it up as a software instrument, which proved much easier, but then was disappointed of the piano offerings in LE's basic Library. Can Garageband instruments be imported to LE's library or is the only way to upgrade selections through additional software purchases? I'll eventually figure out the midi instrument angle, but until then wanted to know if this was a viable workaround? Thanks

You should be able to see Garage Band stuff in the EXS24 sampler and load a set.
Open up the EX and look for the [cut off] and just above that is black window, click and hold and choose which you would like.
    Good luck.

  • How to set up external instrument in logic pro x

how do you set up external instrument in logic pro x without triggering the instrument twice - by the external instrument GM device to control playback and playing the instrument itself?  thank you

I use the local off method but there is another way.
Go to Settings/MIDI and use the  "Instrument Without MIDI Thru Function" selector to pick the device and channel your hardware keyboard is transmitting on.
Settings are on a Per Song basis, they're not global like Preferences are.

  • Opening Garageband Projects in Logic-Question

When I open a garageband project in Logic 8, most of the audio tracks won't have sound, and when I create new audio tracks in those same projects, they also often don't have sound.
It seems random which tracks don't work and which do. And doubling tracks that are functioning right usually doesn't work.
All other kind of tracks (software inst., ext. midi, etc.) work.
    Any idea what's wrong?
I looked through the discussions and couldn't find an answer- sorry if it's been asked.
Thanks in advance for any help...

  • Opening garageband projects in logic

opening garageband projects in logic seems to be a very simple procedure, however im having some difficulties.
I've tried to open all my garageband projects in logic pro 7, but none are working. I get a message saying "Damaged song, or not a Logic Express Song"
I dont know how to go around this message, because its not letting me open any.
Can someone help me with this?

im using logic pro 7 and my garageband is version 3
I have been looking through the "logic for garageband users" manual, but the process goes a lot smoother in the manual. I actually got the idea from there to open the garageband projects in logic. It just tells me how to do it, but it didn't address any troubleshooting issues with opening them.

  • Can I use Mainstage software instruments in Logic Express 9?

I would like to add more software (MIDI) instruments to Logic Express 9. I understand Mainstage comes with what used to be called Jam Packs. Can I use those Mainstage software instruments in Logic Express 9? If not, where do i find additional software instruments?

    All JamPacks: yes, no problem.
Actual instruments, effects, like Space Designer: no, they are part of the application code (MainStage or Logic Pro)
