GarageBand iPhone4 and Midi input: USB or standalone?

Dear collegue musicians,
I would like to play my master keyboard (which has Midi IN/OUT ports) using the piano sound of GarageBand for iPhone.
I've got also a Korg NanoKontrol that I'm already using with my Mac.
http://www.korg.com/nanoseries2
My question is:
is it better to buy a standalone device like as iRig Midi Interface (http://store.apple.com/us/product/H7498VC/A/irig-midi-interface) to connect directly to my iPhone4 or use my old usb to midi interface ESI Rom IO (http://www.esi-audio.com/products/romio/) with the USB Camera adapter (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC531ZM/A?fnode=MTc0MjU4NjE)?
Will the second solution work with any midi software for iPhone?
I've seen on this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frN-kGKV5BM&feature=related
that with the camera adapter I could even connect the Korg Nanokontrol.
Can I connect both the Korg nanokontrol and the midi interface to the iPhone?
Hope you can help me.
Cheers

Yes. I mean that it goes into the lock screen and I didn't notice if it happens after a minute or more.
When you unlock the device (after the standby) if the phones-output is connected to an audio-system like as an hi-fi or a mixer the mobile makes a spike that makes the garage band useless for live playing. The spike is not a bug of garageband, the bug is that there should be the possibility to setup garageband to not go into standby.
On the other side, garage band has an amazing hammond organ which is named "Soul organ" and it's not good when using its default settings but if you set the distortion to 0 (minimum level) it's just amazing! After this, try to set the rotation to fast and just enjoy! It's the leslie. Nothing less compared to a PC sound module.
I don't like the piano of Garageband because it's too bright. I prefer the ones of iRig SampleTank.
Furthermore, iRig SampleTank support also different tones for different tracks and you can load/save preset of sound. I have still to find a way to play piano + slow strings together because I have the sample tank basic version + piano suite but I want to buy all the tones suite. It costs about €30 which is more expensive that GarageBand but it works!
Hope this can help you.

  • Mac GarageBand with iOS MIDI Input Device???

I was walking by a One-on-One at an Apple Store today, and the Apple guy had GB on an iMac but had an iPhone with a keyboard display adding notes to the GB song on the Mac. I thought, "Whoa, I didn't know you could do that with a Mac and iOS device." (both with GB installed).
Well, I can't seem to figure out how to do that. I'm thinking it wasn't GB on the iPhone at all, and I can't remember if the iPhone had any wire connections or not.
What I want to do is to use the iPad as an input device for a song on the Mac, especially for drums. The drum input on the Mac is ridiculous in that it only shows a keyboard and you have to randomly guess on what key makes what drum sound. Right now, I use the iPad that at least shows the parts of a drum kit next to a piano key, and then I use this to input drum tablature into a song. Then I upload the song to iCloud, and then open that on the Mac side, and my drums are there.
So, *is* there a way to use an iPhone or iPad as a MIDI device (or whatever) to input music from a keyboard or drums into GB on a Mac, wired or wireless?

  • AU Lab audio and MIDI input irregularities

    Hi,
Using AU Lab with the internal mic on a macbook pro, audio will not become active
until I reselect the audio input from the studio window.
Similarly, it will not respond to MIDI from a software input (Supercollider 3) until I reselect the "Any MIDI Controller"
option in the MIDI Editor.  Oddly, the problem goes away if there is an external MIDI source (i.e., an Axiom 49)
    connected.
Any clues as to what to do?
    Cheers,
    RJK

Just a very quick starter, since it's late & I'd have to read this a lot more carefully to be much use to you… but perhaps it might help… worth a shot…
Are you trying to use two different devices, one for recording & one for playback? It sounds like you are. If that's so, either select your external device for playback +as well as+ recording, or set up an aggregate device (search for 'aggregate device' if this would be useful).

Tsk tsk, Nigel, don't you see: this is a story - with a cliffhanger... he said he tried... but he never clarifies if he succeeded or not... but still, he has to do it. It's stronger than him, bigger than him, there's no escaping the step-input and midi-input via usb-keyboard scoring... it's fate I tell you! Fate!

  • Midi to usb. Microphone

so i have a casio plugged into my garageband via a midi to usb cord, and when i try to record it won't record any sound unless the microphone is on, which of course has horrible quality. then when i turn the microphone off it doesn't register that it is making any sound just that im hitting the keys...whats the problem why won't it register any sound? how can i record without the mic? sorry if this is a stupid question...thanks!!!

Without an interface of any kind I guess you'll need to plug into the Mac's line-in, which would be a mini (1/8").
If your Casio has a headphone out it could be a 1/8" or a 1/4" (TRS). So you'd need a 1/4" to 1/8" plug or something like that. (there are cables with one of each size on either end or there are little 1/4 to 1/8 connector pieces).
They you'll need to choose the built-in input in GarageBand Prefs>Audio/MIDI.
The Casio may also have a line-out. It could be two RCA or phono jacks. You can also get a cable to convert that too. I would prefer a line-out because it's a fixed output, unlike the headphone out which probably responds to the unit's volume control.

I'm using an iPad camera connection kit and a MIDI to USB cable to interface a MIDI keyboard with GarageBand. It works flawlessly... until I use the sustain pedal. Once the pedal is depressed while playing a given note, from then on, the pedal itself plays the note every time it is depressed. It's not the keyboard or the pedal. I've tried others. That leaves the app or the connection between the iPad and the keyboard. I find it hard to believe I'm the only person who is experiencing this problem. Anyone have a fix?

Yes.  There are a ton of write-ups on how to do the connections.   I connect my m-audio Keystation 61 es through the CCK to my iPad and use GarageBand to control it.  Some keyboards require a powered USB hub to make things work.  I use a belkin 4 port hub in my own setup.   Here is a link to tested / verified keyboards that work via the CCK:  http://iosmidi.com/devices/

  • GarageBand: Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI.

This error recently started popping up for me while using garageband.
GarageBand: Error while trying to synchronize Audio and Midi
    Sample rate xxxxxx recognized
Check conflict between garageband and external device
When I use garageband, my input and output are usually set to my scarlett 2i2 interface and I've never received the synchronizing error before today.  I am not using any Midi.
I've checked the Audio Midi Setup tool to make sure that my format is at 44100.0Hz and have set the "sound" in system preferences to use my scarlett 2i2 interface for input and built-in system for output.
Can anyone help me out with why i'm receiving this error?

Good grief!  I'm on a Mac OS X and was having this same problem.  All these discussions about so much technical jargon just had me exhausted ... not only did I not understand what was being referred to, but I couldn't imagine how to do what was being said.
    Here's what got me straight:
    1.  Go to System Preferences and click on Sound
    2.  Click on Input and select your USB mic (or whatever you're using)
    3.  Click on Output and select Internal Speakers
Done.  No more problem with Garageband!

  • Error while trying to synchronize audio and MIDI.  Sample rate 42804 recognized.  Check conflict between Garageband and external device.

Sometimes, while playing back my software instrument songs, I get an intermittent pop-up error message, saying "Error while trying to synchronize audio and MIDI.  Sample rate 42804 recognized.  Check conflict between Garageband and external device."
(Sometimes the five digit number is different, but remains a five-digit number beginning with "4".)
Simultaneously, the song stops until I press the "Okay" button in the pop-up window.
When I continue to play the song, the sound is jerky and clipped, and the playhead doesn't keep up with the song, and then suddenly jumps to the part of the song currently being played.
There's also a sound of static.
The issue seems to occur whether or not I have my MIDI controller turned on and plugged into my desktop Imac.

  • How do I select a midi input device and record midi?

I have several midi input devices connected to my computer. I use them regularly with Digital Performer. I am trying to record a single midi track in Garage Band using an Oxygen 8 keyboard. In the preferences GB says that it sees 7 midi devices. How do I route midi with Garage Band and how do I tell Garage band which midi device to record from? When I create a midi track (well...I think that it is a midi track) and I try to record I do not see any midi notes being recorded.
Searching the help file for midi provided surprisingly little information. I am sure that this is simple stuff...perhaps so simple that I am missing something obvious.

Yes, if the controller sends the right MIDI messages
What do you mean by "the right midi messages"?
I have a virtual instrument (with for example) a delay effect knob. I would like to turn a knob on my midi controller and adjust the delay in the virtual instrument (as I can in just about any other sequencer). Can GarageBand do this, if so, how?

  • Selecting one of multiple midi inputs in Garageband

    Hi,
I've connected an M-Audio Midisport 4X4 to my powerbook G4 and am trying to control the synths in Reason Adapted at the same time as a synth in Garageband, in order to play them together.
Does anyone know how to select the midi input in Garageband? At the moment it only acknowledges that there are 4 inputs and all controllers set off the synths...Reason is fine, you can select which midi input you want...I have Garageband 2...does version 3 have this option or have I overlooked something in 2?
    Thanks for your help,
    Alex Taylor

Well, if that's the case, you must have a different finish on yours than I have on mine. Either that or you are extrordinarily careful when using it. Mine literally scratches when using a microfibre cloth. I would really like to know whether yours is somehow different. It would really piss me of if some people got a good quality exterior that doesn't scratch and some of us got the opposite. Did you try holding your player under a light to see if there is anything. You may just be looking at it in bad lighting. I find it hard to believe, unless your unit has a different type of plastic cover, that it hasn't received any type of scratches. Can you take a picture of it's It probably seems as though I don't believe you. That's not the case. Its just that I was so careful not to scratch it last night and it got scratched anyway. I have read of similar experiences by others who have the Vision:M as well.
I wish I could return mine and get a different color, it really upsets me that a $300 item that is meant to be hand held and used heavily scratches this easily!! If anyone from creative is reading this, I would like to know what you plan to do about it! I didn't pay all of that money to have this player look like Sh*t when I am only using it the way it was intended and am being very careful at that!

    Hello --
Here is a weird one. Does anhyone know how you can loose the midi input button for step input on the score window in screen set 1 but have it on screen set 2 and others. In screen set 1 I had the arrange window openned with matrix, score, events and keyboard input.
I dumped the autoload and create new windows and it seems to work now but how could something like that happen? I searched for some setting that might affect buttons but did not find one.
Mostely curious if something like this has happend to others.

  • Newbie: 6020E (USB) slow performance with mixed digital and analog input

    Hi,
I'm using a 6020E to do analog and digital input, and I'm getting very bad performance.
Please note that doing IO in Labview is new to me!
I have read the post about 6020E slow performance, and it says I should do buffered IO.
Can anybody point me to some DOC or SAMPLE that actually shows or explains how one should do this. I need to read several digital IO lines (which I can combine in one port-read), and several analog inputs.
Seeing how slow the reading on the 6020E is, I am amazed there is only one post that deals with this issue.
I would be satisfied to get the 6020E into some sort of continuous read mode so that whenever I need data, I get the latest reading right away.
    thanks,
    Peter D'Hoye

    Hi Peter,
Your cannot do buffered digital I/O with your daqpad. It doesn't have that capability. You can only make direct software calls with digital read/write from/to your port. So your digital IO is completely software clocked and not hardware clocked. The example you are trying is only for specific Simultanuous sampling boards or now also for M-series boards that are able to do correlated DIO.
Use the Cont Acq&Graph Voltage-Int Clk.vi example for your analog measurements. (NI Example Finder) For your digital IO you can only use the examples like Read Dig Chan.vi, Read Dig Port,...
There are indeed some slow performance issues with single point I/O Operations, that is correct.
    Check the explaination below:
DAQPads are offered for the Universal Serial Bus (USB) and the IEEE 1394 (also known as FireWire). Both of these standards use a high-speed serial communication protocol between the computer and the device with a bandwidth up to 12 MB/s for USB and 400 MB/s for FireWire.
During a single point operation, the DAQ device requires a complete set of configuration commands. This is done through serial communication (USB or FireWire), making the process slower than in a PCI-based board. The speed obtained for single point operation in a DAQPad is system dependent; this means that your computer processor, memory, bus speed, and other factors alter the speed at which you can do single-point operations with a DAQPad.
For example, on the DAQPad-6020E, timed non-buffered analog input operations are limited to about 50 Hz. At higher rates, the software may become unresponsive. On a FireWire device, you can expect stable operation around 3,000 Hz. But again, these figures are system dependent.
    Regards.
