Garageband mixing and mastering

hey all,
I am looking to outsource my mixing and mastering needs. i am wondering if you know of anyone who will mix and master garageband files. not just anyone of course, but someone who knows what they're doing, a reputable studio, or mastering house. wondering. thanks in advance,
jon

Do a Google Search for professional mixing and mastering, and you may come across one that can handle Logic. You might also pose your question in the Logic Express or Logic Pro forums, to see if any of those folks know of a house that can do it.

  • Should i use Logic Express for Mixing and Mastering?

recording an LP with GarageBand. are express and pro very close in what they offer ? express good enough for mixing and matering an LP? would like to keeps costs down. thanks SJM

It can be done, but you will need to do a lot of reading and make many mixes to get it down. Mastering is not something you can learn overnight. It'll take you many hours of trial and error just to get something that is OK. A pro mastering engineer has years of experience and thousands of dollars worth of high quality gear. With a lot of practice, you can get something fairly decent, but it won't be like a real pro job would be.
As Hangtime suggested in the GB forum, do a google search and you'll get a lot of sites with articles on the subject of mixing and mastering.

  • Mixing and Mastering?

I looking for information on how to best perform mixing using the following:
    1. Logic Pro 7
    2. Motu Ultralite
    3. 6 channels of audio (aka 5.1)
    4. 5 monitors and 1 LFE
Any links to good books, I searched Amazon and didn't find much specific to Logic Pro 7. I've got my DAW setup working but I feel like I'm missing something to obtain the best possible mixing.
A book or web site that can start me from scratch with adjusting the hardware and then move to adjusting the software.
My approach that I've used so far:
    1. Use the 6 analog output volume control on my Ultralite - just randomly selected -10 db as my reference point.
    2. Use the Ultralite noise generator to equalize each output on the 5 monitors and 1 LFE (output on monitors is about 25% of max)
    3. In Logic Pro adjust each tracks volume and the Master Volume
Why I'm concerned is that I don't usually pay much attention to the meters (some are way into the red others are not), I just adjust volume specific to each track until I reach what I consider the correct balance. I often find myself turning the master way down or with a wide variance in track levels (even having to adjust gain at the wave form level).
I know when I'm clipping and adjust accordingly (oddly enough I rarely clip -- oddly enough my final output is often too soft/quiet). But I still think my approach is a little too "unscientific" and is perhaps not utilizing my hardware and software to it's pure potential. I know a mixing engineer would probably roll over with pain.
I don't do any "live" recordings and all my mixing is either from existing sample sources on my DAW or from captured video/audio. Often a mix of 96/16 and 48/16 material.
Should I have my Motu Ultralite at 0db reference?
Should my monitors be as close to Max output as possible?
Any links, help, references, and/or suggestions?
    Thanks, Rob.

    hi, rob,
the motu output should be set to match your monitors/power amp.
if you can, set it to +4. this is pro level.
you motu sould be a close to max on the out meters, and logic's two bus should not be clipping.
you can use the "master" fader to bring the whole output down if you like, but on a mix with good gain staging, this should not be needed.
if you trks/VI's are showing clipping, back them off and raise that channel's fader.
on a good mix, nothing needs to clip.
buy a SPL meter, and play back your mix, turning up your monitors until ~86db spl is reached at your listening position.
this gives the best balance of highs and lows to the ear.
    best, david r.

  • What should I send my producer to mix and master with?

My friend is going to be mixing and mastering my band's EP. I was hoping I could just send him the Garageband files that he could open up on his end, but I understand he just needs the AIFF/WAV files for the tracks?
    How does that work then?

  • Is it possible to take a mixed and bounced wav and convert it back into the original individual aiff separate tracks?

Hello.  Is it possible to take a song that has been bounced down to a .wav and is now in itunes, and import it back into logic but as the original seperate tracks that make up the bounced .wav?  I have some songs I recorded when I first started using Logic, and the mix and mastering is horrible.  I have gotten way better since then and I would like to remix and re-master some of these tracks.  Only trouble is I no longer have the original seperate track Logic Aiff files. I know I can obviously import the bounced down stereo .wav file and remaster that, but it would be really cool if Logic had some way of recalling the song back into its seperate tracks.  Is there any way at all to do this? If Logic can't do this maybe there is an app out there that can?
Even though I just downloaded Logi X I also decided to keep Logic 9.  So I can run both if that helps.
    Thanks,
    Mike

That would be like mixing a cake batter and deciding you wanted to start over using the same ingredients, separating the eggs, milk, baking powder, baking soda, flour...etc, back into their original form.
Can't be done... the instruments share the same frequency ranges.  There is sofware that let's some adjustment to pitch be done but trying to pull out individual instrument/vocal tracks from a mix would leave you with very, very inferior tracks to re-mix with.

  • Using Logic 9 with mixer and audio line in on Mac Book Pro.

Hello, I Just began studio recording, and am making the switch from garage band to logic 9.
I do not know how to make my instruments play through logic 9 using a mixer and a Line In connection to the mac like I could with garage band.
Please scroll down to the bold underline text for tl;dr
I am self taught, and never thought I would love working with sound, and I spent over a year touring the US doing live sound for concerts and am now helping out with live studio recordings, and projects on my own.
It started as something to do to fight boredom and to help, basically making sure nobody touched the mixer or to unplug it if things caught on fire.
By the end of the year I had been helping "Others" with live sound, and I learned a lot about the features and trims on the analog mixer that are more complex than "mixing the volume of each track" lol.
So please be patient with me. I do not know many of the terms, I just "feel" when something is not right and know where to go to in order to fix it or make it better, I dont have much practice when it comes to the technical side with computers and sound.
so I will try my best to understand your help.
Anyway's, I looked up online, and I cannot figure out how to get logic 9 to playback instruments set up on my mixer.
I currently have Male L/R 1/4inch to 8th Inch cables coming from main into the Line In port on the mac.
I know this setup is called "stereo" (I think?) and Im limited with only two separate tracks to record, so I have my selected tracks panned right and left for two separate inputs on the program.
I know everything works because I had it all setup on garage band, I changed nothing for logic, but all I can find are MIDI tutorials and I am using analog to line in, not MIDI.
Please let me know what I have to do to bring up two separate tracks, and also be able to hear them wile I play before recording.

Kudos to figuring it out yourself.
Yes, Logic is geared to the professional user, you will need to set up the program to your particular way of working, Logic was well developed for professional use long before Apple purchased it, it's not an Apple program per se. It's complex and offers a myriad number of choices so that it can be configured to many styles of working, there's often 3 or 4 ways to perform the same function.
Logic insists the user educate themselves... which is a good thing.
    Here ya go!

"Exploring Logic Pro" is a good one to start with.

  • Trouble with mediasource mixer and equali

I have tried to start the mixer and equalizer and get the following messege "unable to change sound device to your selected device." All was working just fine yesterday. Also, I was unable to configure the speaker setup. I had to go to the audio setup and change the speaker setup from desktop to 5.. For some reason it reverted back to desktop.
    I have an Audigy 2ZS.

Yes, just checked the Presonus release notes for Universal Control 1.7.2 (the latest), and it has removed support for Snow Leopard (OSX10.6.8), so that may be a possible source of the problem - might be worth contacting Presonus Tech support to confirm.
You could update your OSX, but I'd be a bit careful there - not sure if Mavericks supports Logic 8.  If not, I believe there are places where you can still get hold of Mountain Lion (which is supported by UC1.7.2) - a quick net search should do the trick.
Also, I've just re-read your post and notice you ask about the start up order.  The Presonus manual says to switch the desk on first, then fire up the computer.  This used to work with me, but I've recently updated to a new Macbook Pro and had to start using a firewire to thunderbolt connector, and I found that I could now only get the Studiolive to show up in Logic if I start the computer first, then fire up the desk then open Logic.  I raised a tech support ticket with Presonus and they were baffled by this, and couldn't see any reason why it should be, but nonetheless, it's the only way it'll work for me, so probably worth giving it a shot.

With the updates came iTunes 11.1.1 and Quicktime 7.6.6. I am still using Garageband 2008 and iPhoto 2008. When I create music in Garageband I usually adjust the volume and save it. Even now when I share the Garageband created files with iTunes 11.1.1, the volime I previously set in Garageband is retained. However, when I use the music to create a slide show in iPhoto 2008 and export to Quicktime 7.6.6, the volume level I previously set is lost and seems to default to a low level. The problem seems to be either in the slide show export from iPhoto 2008 to Quicktime 7.6.6 or in Quicktime itself. Is there a work around, so that I can retain the volume level I had previously set in Garageband, a volume level that seems to transfer without problem to the new iTunes. But then iPhoto 2008 (slide show) possibly or Quicktime 7.6.6 do not cooperate. Before I did the upgrade to Snow Leopard, the new iTunes and Quicktime I had no problems with the set volume being retained in the old Quicktime. The reason I need control over the volume is that all these music files are uploaded to YouTube.

  • Hello, can I still play Garageband 9 projects/loops in Garageband 10, and how? Thank you

    Hello,
Can I still play GarageBand 9 projects/loops in GarageBand 10, and how?
Do I need to re-install iLife11 to be able to play GarageBand 9 projects/loops in 11?
    Thanks in advance

GarageBand 10 needs the loops and instruments from Garageband ´09 or ´11 installed to be able to play the older projects with all sounds. Otherwise instruments and loops may be missing. If you uninstalled GarageBand completely, reinstall iLife '11 to be able to use the older instruments and loops in GarageBand 10. before you install GarageBand 10.0.
GarageBand 10. comes only with a basic set of instruments and needs to be expanded by an in-app purchase. If you have GarageBAnd '11 installed, you should be able to get the in-app purchase for free.   Expanding GarageBand for Mac (v10.0) content with an in-app purchase

  • Best way to move Ap library and masters to a new HD

    Hello,
I currently have my library on a 500GB HD on my mac pro. Since free space is running out I purchased a 1TB internal drive. Now I want to move everything to this new drive (library and masters).
By copying all the masters and the library to the new location and pointing to it in the general preference of aperture would work but copying just will take too long.
Is there a better way to do that?

If you are moving masters, that sounds like you have referenced master files.
    1) Backup your Aperture Library if you can; don’t delete it and your original referenced masters until the last step, if ever!
    2) Use Aperture -> File -> Relocate Masters so Aperture makes all the connections to the new location itself:
To move masters for referenced images to a new location
In the Browser, select the referenced images whose masters you want to move.
    Choose File > Relocate Masters.
Choose a folder location in the dialog that appears.
Choose None from the Subfolders pop-up menu to specify that the files be stored as separate, individual files in the selected folder. You can also specify that Aperture create a hierarchy of subfolders with specific folder names to store your files. For more information about creating folders to hold your imported image files, see Importing Masters for Referenced Images into Folders.
Choose a naming convention from the Name Format pop-up menu to specify how you want the masters named.
For example, choose Master Filename from the Version Name pop-up menu to have your files stored using the current master filenames from your camera or card. Choose a name format from the Version Name pop-up menu to have your masters stored using a specified name. If you choose a custom name format, enter the name you want in the Name Text field. For more information about naming files, see Automatically Naming Your Imported Images.
    Click Relocate Masters.
    3) As for the Aperture Library now updated with the new locations for the referenced masters, you can certainly simply copy your Aperture Library to the internal drive.
    4) Then drag that internal drive library icon over your Aperture program icon in the dock, and you’ll launch the program with everything taken care of on the new location and the new library.
    5) Once confident everything worked properly (maybe in a few months unless you need the disk space sooner), delete or archive your original referenced masters and original Aperture Library.

  • Interface to go between mixer and computer.

I'm looking for something to hook up between my mixer and my computer so I can record at least 2 separate tracks at one time in GB.
Anyone have an idea of what I'm looking for?
    PB G4 Ti   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

If all you want is 2 tracks at once, then the mixer will do that as described, or a 2 channel interface will do that ALONE, and the mixer wouldn't be needed. I see no reason to connect the mixer to an interface to get 2 separate tracks. Using the mixer in this way WOULD be desirable if you were wanting to get a stereo mix of a drum kit, for example. Then you could pan the drums where you like and have 2 tracks of the drums in stereo, but that doesn't sound like what you are saying. If you simple want 2 separate tracks, then either will do fine. Both are not necessary.

  • GarageBand, iMovie and iPhoto won't upgrade

    Hello,
Since a while ago, I've been receiving every day and every time a notification saying a new upgrade for GarageBand, iMovie and iPhoto is available.
For some reason, whenever I go to the app store and try to upgrade all, I get a message saying: "To upgrade these apps, connect to the account you used to buy them".
I don't have any other accounts meaning that the only one I have should work. There is another user on my computer and he also has a different Apple ID which we tried to use but nothing happens either.
So, is there anything we can do to either upgrade those apps or to stop getting the upgrade message?
    Thanks.

I'm not sure if upgrading to Lion could be the issue, it didn't came preinstalled so when it was released, I bought it and upgraded.
Do you mean Lion or Mt. Lion? Did you make a clean install?  If you upgraded from Snowleopard, you probably bought your Mac before the AppStore was released, and then you should upgrade iLife using Software Update from the -menu and not from the AppStore. Have you moved your iLife apps to from their original location to a subfolder of Applications? Then move them back.
But if you bought your Mac with Lion preinstalled, try to log out of the AppStore and then click the "Updates" tab and sign back in. Does that show the updates?

  • How to Import Garageband projects and files into Cubase for Windows?

    Hi
I've recently started using Garageband to record my ideas and compositions. I had 2 main questions:
    1. How do I transfer the audio files created in Garageband in a format which will allow me to edit them in Music Software for a Windows based Operating system? Tranferring them to iTunes and then converting them to MP3 doesn't help because then my friends can't edit my guitar parts and other backing tracks.
Mainly I need to know how to save and import Garageband projects and individual tracks into Cubase/ Cakewalk for Windows so that my band guys can edit the tracks and send me their ideas.
I'm the only one out of my friends who has an Apple Macbook and most of my band guys still use Windows based Operating systems.
    2. I record my guitars and other instruments using the Digitech GNX4 guitar effects processor as the sound source through USB. While I can record clean guitar without any problem, the moment I switch on the distortions on the GNX 4, there is a loud and constant hum from the speakers. I am therefore not being able to record distorted guitar sounds.
    Please help on this.
Thanks and hope to hear from you all.
    Cheers
    Prash

Tranferring them to iTunes and then converting them to MP3
    same as the protools procedure:

there is a loud and constant hum from the speakers.
Could be a ground loop problem. Test it using the MacBook on battery power only.
