GarageBand notation view

Anyone else use notation view for GarageBand?
When I write music, I prefer using classical notation because it is easier to tab what I have in my head and get the timing of the notes perfect. I struggle to use GarageBand's notation - simply because I cannot change the type of note or re-write a section using notation view.
Products like Guitar Pro, Sibelius, and apparently Logic Pro offer neat classical notation entering. I got to the stage where I had to use Guitar Pro to tab a song and then export the midi file to GarageBand just because I couldn't get it done at all in GarageBand.
Am I using it wrongly? I noticed if you press the left and right arrows it changes the note type, but it screws everything up, like timing etc. I cannot change notes in dependently.

yeah, ditto Schneb's ditto of you.
Well, I ditto your ditto of Shneb's ditto of me.
I guess we agree.
I actually know how to read music by notation, but I like the flexibility of just dragging the bar to whatever length you want it, rather than having to do math to see if you need a double-dotted 16th note, or just a dotted one.
And if you want to change it, just drag it to the length you want it. Very intuitive, and convenient. As a composer/songwriter, it's one of the features of GB that I really like.

  • Writing in Notation view

I'm trying to write some music in the notation view and I'm having a huge problem with the time values.
I'm trying to write a dotted eigth note followed by a triplet of 32nd notes. I insert the dotted eigth note, fine, then when I switch to the 32nd note triplet the program changes the time value of the eigth note to a quarter.
I tried changing the noataion display grid to 32 and even 64th notes, but still it will not let me enter 32nd note triplets without effecting the dotted eigth. In fact, even though there is a button for 32nd note triplets, it never enters them, it always changes them to eigth notes, no matter what setting I have the display grid set to.
What gives? Why can't I do this?

  • Trying to print notation in GarageBand, the print button is not 'clickable'

I just picked up a M-Audio Keystation, plugged it in, Garageband recognized immediately, played some music, saved file, then when I try to print notation, the *print button is all gray* and not 'clickable'. I check in other programs and the print button works fine... ANY IDEAS? Printing notation was my main purpose of buying this keyboard and using GB.

Okay, figured it out... Click on the track, then the track editor. Change the track editor view from graphic view to notation view, then the print button works... WHEW! What a workout just to print notation view!

  • Writing Musical Notation in GarageBand..?

    Hi!
I am relatively new to GarageBand. I don't know how to play the piano, but can write music. I know there is a musical notation view in GarageBand, and see a pull-down menu of notes, but don't know how to add them to the bar. I know I'm probably missing something small Can anyone help me? Thanks!

  • Viewing in music notation.

I have the latest garageband on my computer, I have followed all of the instructions, and read all the help topics and I still can't figure out how to view the music as standard music notation. Someone please help!! P.S.--and don't say to select a software instrument region and click the notation view button because obviously I know that but where on earth is the notation view button (and dont say in the upper right hand corner of the editors head area)
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2GHz Intel Core Duo, 1GB RAM

Double click in the region you want to view (make sure it's a software instrument and ther is actually some music there!)
This will open up the track edit window.
Bottom left hand corner of the track edit window (below the "note velocity") you'll see a double box. The left hand box has two "dashes" in and the right hand box has a note in. Click on the note and that brings up the music stav. Click on the dashes and you get the piano roll representation.

  • Music notation inaccurate and/or missing notes

I connected my Yamaha keyboard to my iMac via MIDI cables and was able to record a track in GarageBand by playing directly on my Yamaha keyboard. However, when I play back the recording and open the music notation view, the notes shown on the staff are either wrongly notated and/or missing. For example, a quarter note followed by 2 eighth notes are shown as a triplet! I was definitely NOT playing it as a triplet and it doesn't sound like a triple on playback, yet it is displayed as a triplet. Also, when I arpeggiate a chord which is held for a quarter note length, it is displayed as a quarter note block chord with MISSING notes, but yet you can HEAR ALL the correct notes in the arpeggiation during playback. What can I do to make GarageBand notate more accurately and display every note it is playing, that is, if you can HEAR the note being played, it must SHOW it on the staff. Please help!

I haven't used or seen Logic Express before. Is the recording/notation better/more accurate in Logic Express?
Yes, of course. Logic Express 8 has the same notation features as Logic Pro 8 which is used by professional composers. You can download the pdf manuals from Apple's website.

  • Editing in Notation

I'm editing in notation view (2/4 time) and i can't get the desired note pattern. I need a beamed sixteenth note (two sixteenth notes connected by two parallel bars at the top) and then a quarter note, and then an eigth note. whenever i try to put the notes together in notation view they all get connected or have unwanted rests inbetween them...anything i can do?

I find notation view helpful but not as you expect. Its best features are:
    1. Fixing rhythm errors (aligning to the beat.)
    2. Deleting wrong notes.
Other than that it is a lot easier to redo a part if it is way off.
If you are getting a lot of strange rests try decreasing the alignment value by clicking on the little ruler icon to the right in the editing track and select a lower value. (Eg. If it is set on 1/16th notes, set it to 1/8th notes.) Your part will continue to play the same but the rests will disappear. If there are sections that are off, select the notes and click on the align notes button. This will line up notes to the nearest 1/8th (or what ever you selected in the ruler icon.)
Some people align all the notes in a passage. I do not find this or using Finale to create my MIDI helpful. The parts end up sounding too stiff, computer-like. I only align sections that are really off. My live playing always sounds more natural, even though the MIDI output ends up with some strange rests if you view the part with 1/16th or smaller selected in the ruler icon.

  • Notation feature unavailable in GB2

I'm a newbie to GB (2.02) I've recorded a track from my keyboard, and according to the help file I should be able to view the track in notation view by clicking the musical note which is supposed to be in the lower right hand corner of the editor header. Maybe I'm blind, but I can't see a musical note anywhere on the interface (except in the display window to change to musical time)... duhh?
    iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

You have to open the Track Editor, click on the Scissors icon, and it has to be a Software track (if you recorded the audio from your keyboard there is no notation available).

  • How to edit song via garageband from my macbook

already drag the song at garageband. but don't know how to cut out two second from the midde of the song.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use GarageBand. There's a GarageBand Support Community where everybody uses GarageBand. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Editing woes

Alright.. I'm new to both GB and the forums. Hope this is in the right place.
So, I'm trying to get used to reading, using, and manipulation sheet music. I am a very visual thinker, so just toying with my midi keyboard with the instruments doens't get me far. I think of what looks like it should good, not what sounds like it should sound good. So to start, I'm trying to copy a song, then take it and layer it with various instruments, effects, etc and eventually create my own remix of it. The song is the Main Theme from the Metal Gear Solid games. I Googled some sheet music that I'm using to recreate the song via GB's note editor. This way, I don't have to worry about my music skills and sense of timing [specifically, my lack thereof] but I've run into some problems.
    Original Song: http://downloads.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/Metal%20Gear%20Solid%202%20Sons%20of%2 0Liberty%20Original%20Soundtrack/01_''metalgear_solid''_maintheme.mp3
Sheet Music [page I'm stuck on]

on the 4th row down on the lower half of the notation, there are a series of short, numerous notes. There are a few specific areas of trouble. There are a few specific areas of trouble.
    1) the 'b' symbol next to some of the notes. Sometimes if I take a note and drag it slowly up or down the scale, it will appear, but othertimes I can't seem to 'find' that note. Is there a way to convert or 'force' the note to do that?
    2) The 'dots' next to some of the notes. Similar to above, I can place a note with a dot next to it, but sometimes it goes away or doesn't go where I want it to. This, combined with 3) have been particularly troublesome, as I don't even know what exactly they mean. The dot means 1.5x the note? I think..
    3) I understand that if two half-notes are close together they are connected by a bar [two bars for quarter notes, etc] but some of these notes have a bar, then like part or half of a second bar. I've sometimes been able to get this to appear, but usually on the wrong side of the note. Does it matter what 'side' it is on? I think it has to do with the timing.
Any and all help you could provide, either in way of explanation, links to useful sites or tutorials, anything at all, would be greatly appreciated. Sorry that I am being unclear, as I don't know much musical terminology. and GB probably isn't the best program for notation creation, but its the easiest way I can think of to get used to a visual represenation of what I'm trying to do.

    Well,
I'm confused. If you do not understand how to read sheet music, then why are you trying to create a song using the notation window? Is it because you are copying the notes from sheet music? Put in your notes like you want to do, then go over to look at the grid and you will clearly see where on the scale that note is and in which octave it is. You might better understand the "construction" of a song...note for note...if you use the grid method. Visual orientation is very good in that. Neither method is so good without your applying more of your audio senses to creating the song, rather than your visual senses...although in either method you do need to see what you're doing.
the symbol that looks a bit like a "b" is a flat. The black keys on the virtual piano can be either a flat or a sharp which is this symbol "#"; depending on which white key it is near. the flats or sharp notations won't "appear" in the notation view unless your note is a sharp or a flat. Placing that note, when you're not sure what you're doing, is MUCH easier in the grid view.
    Also,
I'm SO BAD at reading sheet music too. I got three beginner piano books intended for little children and struggle through it with those. Those books help me a lot with understanding what the notes are, but it doesn't make composing songs with Garageband any easier. More than anything else, I have to use my ears for that.

  • My notes only show stems, no heads

I've searched this forum and searched Google but can't find a solution for my problem, I hope anyone here can help me out.
In my notation view I only see note stems and no note heads. The MIDI input is played correctly so I don't think there's anything wrong with my MIDI to USB device...
Some people on this forum suggested it might be a font issue, but I don't get any missing fonts messages when I launch GarageBand.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks you,
    Irma

  • Editing Software Instrument Regions

Hey, how can I get my garageband to show notes in the lower editor? I play notes using software instruments but I can't arrange them in the order I would like to choose. Can you please help me?

There's two ways to edit, "piano roll" view and notation view. You switch between the two by clicking "Piano Roll" or "Notation" in the Editor window.
You might be more accustomed to the notation view - however, the piano roll view is much more precise in terms of note onset, duration and velocity. If you familiarize yourself with it, you'll find it a lot more useful. (And GB isn't really suited for doing scores anyway.)

  • Step Input Keyboard not scoring properly

I am new to Logic Express, but an experienced user of other notation software and garageband. In Score mode, I have the keyboard input set to quarter notes, but when I click on a key I get the right tone but the length is shown as a sixteenth rest and two tied notes: sixteenth and eighth.
    Any ideas why?

    Hi,
    1. did you check the position indicator is at the correct position? Maybe it was back or forth one sixteenth not. This usually occurs if you input the midi data with the notation view. I'd suggest using the piano roll for input since it has a much more precise display for positioning the position pointer
    2. There are many ways to change the display of the midi data in the note sheet. Probably if you change to the piano roll, you'll find you have input a full quarter note, but since it doesn't start at the correct position, the Score Editor displays it in another way. You have many choices to change this display. Take your time to get used to it - the score editor is one of the most demanding things to learn in logic.
    Cheers,
    Fox

  • How can you let GB show the music sheet of what you've played

    Hello,
I heard that it is possible to see the music sheet of what you've played in GB.
Does somebody know how to do that.
    Greetz Indy

    Hi,
You can view a Software Instrument region in notation view.
Select the track, open your "Track Editor", look in the section to the left, at the bottom, there are two choices - one is lit (has two bars on it). The other is a note. Click on it to select "Notation View".
You can edit your track in this view if you want to.
(There is unfortunately no way at this time to print this notation out from within GarageBand.)

    can you help me ?

    Dave,
Glad that the article helped. As you probably noted, the "system tips" are for the PC, as I know almost nothing of Mac's. I am sure there are similarities, but also differences, just because of the way that the OS's differ.
Audio playback problems CAN interfere with total playback in the Timeline. As Premiere sees the Timeline as a single unit, and just feeds the Audio & Video streams to the proper hardware, if one stream has an issue, it will very often affect the playback of the other too.
If you have any Mac-specific tips for Audio at the OS level, please add them. Others will benefit.
    Thanks, and good luck,
    Hunt
