  • GarageBand lets me hear MIDI files without a MIDI interface?

My son takes a music technology course in high school and his teacher wants him to take a MIDI file from school and put it into Logic Express. When he tries to place the file in now he gets no output. Will GarageBand let him hear MIDI files without a MIDI interface? Is there some other program you could suggest if GarageBand/iLife 05 is not the right solution? Is it possible he is not properly operating Logic Express and if so how would he be able to accomplish this in Logic Express?
    Thanks,
    Vinnie

If you simply import a MIDI file into GarageBand, it will automatically guess what software instruments to assign to each track in the MIDI file. You just hit Play and you've got something to listen to.
In Logic Express, and every other darn music composition program I've ever worked with on Windows or the Mac, first you import the MIDI file and then you have to go to each track and manually select and configure a software instrument to play back the music on that track.
In other words, GarageBand is for beginners and it tries to do some of the work for you. Logic Express is for knowledgeable people, and it expects you to do your own configuring of instruments and sound sources.

  • Where is the tempo information in a midi file?

I thought that eventually I would just stumble on it and have a 'duh' moment, but it's been a long time and I still can't find it. GarageBand adjusts to a midi file's starting tempo, so sometimes I use that as a reference. In Logic 7 the event window could stretch out to expose hidden information - I don't why that's been locked up since 8. And of course classical midi files change tempo constantly.
So, how do I tap into this essential information?
As always, thanks for the help, Bob :o)

I'm familiar with Logic's tempo in the the event window and on the global tracks. My question is: how do I find the tempo information within an imported midi file? Logic is not recognizing the information, so I want to find it and set the tempos myself - if possible. (It must be possible.)
If you import a MIDIfile, or drag it to the arrange, you are importing the sequence data into your current project. In other words, regardless of the tempo in the midifile, you are importing into Logic at Logic's current tempo, ignoring the tempo stuff in the midifile.
if you want to retain the tempo in the MIDIfile, you must "Load" the midifile, not import it. This creates a new project with all the tempo information contained in the midifile.
Logic has behaved this way the same since the early days.
In Logic 7 the event window's width could stretch. Since then only the length stretches. There are always notes from the author that are cut off now.
I don't like the current event list window either...

  • ITunes refuses to read music on second internal HDD

    Hello!
I realize this topic has been asked to death, we need some form of sticky topic! After a bit of searching, I haven't turned up anything I haven't tried.
    Here goes:
-I just got my old 400mhz AGP G4 up and running - 768 MB RAM, OS 10.4.8, a new SuperDrive, airport, and 2 internal HDDs - an 80 gig and a 60 gig. Well, the 80G is my boot drive, and holds just about everything. I'd like to move my ~17 Gig iTunes library over to the 60 Gig drive, which is currently empty. Here's what I tried:
Method 1: Read this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=607487
It worked great - except that trashing the files (on boot drive) caused iTunes to give a completely empty library.
Method 2: Copy all files to secondary drive, and attempt to get iTunes (now empty) to accept the library. It didn't work - if I try to import library, I'll get 4000 songs and no playlists!
Method 3: Use .Mac's Backup to attempt to restore the library to secondary drive. No luck - iTunes still refuses to read the file. (Same as 2)
    Any tips?
One more thing: How can you tell who is listening to your shared iTunes library? There used to be a widget for that - but I can't find it anymore.
    Thanks,
    -Dan

Right, I know. But the procedure of choosing a new location for the library, checking the box, and having iTunes copy the files is the same for both platforms. I suppose I was too lazy to type it out, hm?
Anyway, It's actually copied from my Powerbook - the Powerbook library is the master copy, although I like to have a fairly current library over on the G4 as it's very useful when the Powerbook is packed up for school, or when I'm taxing the Powerbook to the limit (eg, Final Cut render, gaming, etc). It's a fairly simple matter to copy the files, although long. And for what it's worth, they were all still in the trash - I had yet to delete them! So, everything was still there.
What I eventually did was just to copy them back to the original boot drive, then follow the select-new-location>let iTunes copy method, then just delete the MUSIC files, not the iTunes-required files. Essentially, your second Apple help doc link. It works like a charm now.
Sigh... that's one of those "DO'H" moments.
    Thanks,
    -Dan

  • Can't import midi files in garageband 11 after lion install?

I can't import or open midi files in garageband 11 ,tried reinstalling from my app dvd, will not allow, it is grayed out was using snow leopard and updated
to lion and thats when it quit also my quicktime pro 7 will no longer export midi.

Same here. Now that I think of it, I recently put in Logic Studio 8 and Garageband didn't open on it's own anymore. That was iLife'06. I then up-graded to iLife '08 and Garageband still doesn't open to a new project. The only way I can still open Garageband is to make a "template" out of one of their demos, then when that opens I strip the tracks out and start with new ones. By the way, I just tried to install XLN Audio's Addictive Drums. They work in Logic Studio, but do not open at all in Garageband. Error message says the plug-in is not "valid". So much for Garageband being easier than Logic.

  • Editing a midi file in GarageBand 09

Just downloaded a midi soundtrack, a karaoke version of a popular song. I plan to track in original vocals, but I have additional verses of lyrics that will require repeating sections of verse and chorus to accommodate.
As cool as midi is on Garageband, it don't see those (GB file) cleavage points that can be grabbed and manipulated.
Is there an app that will allow me to convert the midi file into a standard GB file I can work with, or a way to section the midi track for looping and/or repeating in GB?
At a complete stand still on this;-(

Good to know. I will have to contact the MP3 site, because I don't see a tempo designation in the limited documentation. I do have the option to download the same song, but in different keys (+/-) 3 half step intervals from the original key the song was done in. Nothing seems happen when I change the key and tempo in Garageband. Another thing I have to dig into.
Yeh, I was one increment off on my cut point, and when I extended the song, there was a slight audible disassociation at the join points. I'm still curious about monitoring capability when paused, with respect to dragging the tape head line manually and listening to the audio around the cut point or should I say split point.
The song is set up: intro-verse-verse-chorus-verse-verse-chorus-instrumental break-verse-verse-chorus-verse-verse-chorus-instrumental break-verse-verse-chorus-verse-verse-chorus....ending.
If I were to just delete the ending, and then grab the last chorus and pull (stretch) the whole track it to the right, what part of the song is expanding? I tried doing this, but the pattern became altered, forcing me to sing through an instrumental break, to keep the vocal coherent.
I should have copied the section, after the intro and before the ending, and added that, between the body and the ending. I'll try that tomorrow:-)

  • How can I save song created in GarageBand as a MIDI file

Is this possible, I'm an old user of Cubase, and before SMPTETrack (someone remembers?) so Midi files are for me an obvious think. In GarageBand a new nice program for begginers and fans of music easily produced I found a little problems finding how to save my data as MIDI files, if someone could help me to resolve this issue I'll greatly appreciate some words of help
    Thanks in advance
    Andy

Sorry, GB doesn't output any midi data, neither streaming nor as a file. You can open GB files in Logic and then export them as midi.

  • CAN'T IMPORT MIDI FILES INTO GARAGEBAND

Installed iLife '08 in order to use the new GarageBand. However, when I open up a new track and drop a MIDI file onto the window both the MIDI file and the track disappear. Any remedies?

  • Garageband to MIDI File Conversion?

Is it possible for me to use Logic Express to open .band files (created by GarageBand '08) and export them as MIDI files for opening in Sibelius 5 for scoring?
    Thanks in advance!

As long as the .band contains midi information on software instruments or something else. Audio will not work.
(Sorry if you knew that, just wanted to clarify)

  • How do I import a midi file into garageband for iPad?

I have a midi file (with .mid extension) on my laptop.
Can I import it into Garageband on my iPad 2 and if so how?
    Thanks in advance!

Connect your device to your computer.
In iTunes left Pane, click your ipad under Device.  On right Pane, click Movie Tab. Check box Sync Movies, then check the movie you want it to be sync, then click the Sync button at the lower right wimdow.

  • Make individual Garageband project out of individual MIDI files

I would like to know if there's a way (applescript, automator) to automatically open a new garageband project, remove the default track in the new file, import a MIDI file, (optional) move the MIDI regions to the beginning of the track (most of these MIDIs have a Count in of one to three measures)(/optional), then save the file as a Garageband project file. I'd then want to do this to a whole folder of MIDI files so that I have ready to edit garageband projects with the accompanying music already in the file.

You are confusing Analogue Audio with Digital a bit. You're not getting a "low signal" from the keyboard in the analogue sense, MIDI just tells a synth how loud IT should play.
Open track info for the instrument track you're using, click the pencil icon to the far right of the Generator popUp menu, and increase the volume there.
From that point you control the final track volume with the track's fader (and/or Master Volume slider)

  • Share GarageBand (iOS) midi files from iPhone to iPhone

    hi guys!
I would like to send any garageband-midi-files songs (.band) made in my iphone (4s) to another iphone, so others could work with my beats.
    how I can do that?
    thanks for letting me know:-)
    lynad

Do your firiends also have a mac with GarageBand, and are the GarageBand versions compatible? See:
GarageBand for iOS and Mac: Project compatibility
Then you can share GarageBand projects by downloading the song to your Mac using iTunes or iCloud, mailing the song to your patners, and uploading it again from their Mac using iTunes or iCloud.
The detour to a computer is necessary, because otherwise you can only share the song as an audio file and not as a project. with midi included.
If your friends don't have a Mac but a PC see turingtests2's workaround:
    See this thread:
Re: Loading a .band file back into Garageband (iPad 2)
or HT4622 Re: Can I share the .band file to my friend for edit/record his track?
