Garageband trouble

I´ve played with GB2 a bit last year, using my soundcard Phase X24 and a dynamic mike with a simple tele-cable. It worked OK, but the vocal sound obviously wasn´t up to much. Now I´ve bought a condenser mike and an xlr-cable and I can´t record at all! The volume on track-info is grey, there must be something I missed doing, last year everything seemed so easy...

First of all, a condenser mic needs phantom power - i.e. energy provided through the XLR cable. So you need a mixer or an audio interface that provides phantom power.
That would solve the second problem too (that you obviously faced already a year ago): Both dynamic and condenser mics don't provide enough signal on their own for the Mac's line-in input, they have to be pre-amplified. Both a mixer (that has an analog out for the line-in) or and audio interface (that goes digitally into your USB or firewire port) would do that job.

Live looping with Garageband trouble.

Is it possible to record LIVE loops WITHOUT creating new takes? I want to record bass for live shows, then loop the parts, but it keeps creating new takes and recording over in the looped area instead of playing back what i just recorded in. Any suggestions?

If you have set a cycle region and press record, GB will always create new takes. You can't switch from recording to playback without hitting "stop".

Trouble with 3rd party VST installs for Garageband, can't find instruments

Hi,
I am having trouble with Audio Units for Garageband when installing 3rd party software, VSTs, loops, instruments. I have more issues with Logic Pro. I am hoping that it is the same underlying issue and that I am just missing something. I have the manuals (not great for troubleshooting). I am confused with some installs use User Library and others use the Computer Library. I do go to the mfgs sites for updates. The installs sometimes work as standalones but I don't see ALL of the components of the software in say Garageband or Logic. Mostly, I am missing the "instruments" and "loops" that I want to access within the DAW. Some examples:
• Here is some of the software I am talking about: East West sample libraries (Play and Native Instruments); Vienna Symphonic librarires; Sylenth1 (just last night); Sample Tank 2 and Total Workstation 2 from IK Multimedia and others.
• In GB I see the Audio Units for Vienna, Play, Sylenth, some of the IK Multimedia but NOT any instruments when I go to the "Sound Generator" -- I seem to be missing the instruments and loops. I see less AUs in Logic Pro. Some of these are VST instruments.
• Can I just drag-drop samples to the library folders to fix this?
• The plug-ins do not seem to work (though Sylenth1 worked for a single sound). When there is a standalone app (as in Sample Tank), I finally got the "sounds" to be reinstalled and loaded, those sounds/samples don't show up in any DAW.
• When and if the sounds/loops/samples show up in GB's "Instruments" section will I be able to tell that they belong to that particular software or library?

Found the answer myself, it was simple:
• Select the Track
• Show the Instrument (info area)
• Click on Edit
• Click on the "Sound Generator" pop up field.
• At the bottom of the pop-up list, select from the Audio Units that you have installed. This is where you see "Sample Tank 2, Vienna Instruments..."
• NEXT -- IMPORTANT: CLICK ON THE PICTURE next to the Sound Generator pop-up field.The AU unit loads up, the interface pops up, you load up the instruments in this AU Unit. You do NOT see the sounds from the AU unit in the normal Apple instrument list.
This was not intuitive but once you know it, fairly simple.
Still, the devil is in the details -- more questions on the way.

First check, if you do not accidentally have hidden or filtered your loops:
Uncheck the "Filter for more relevant results" option in the Audio tab of the GarageBand Preferences.
And the drop down menu on top of the Loop Browser should be set to "Loops", not to some Jam Pack or other collection.
If you still don't see any loops, check if you have set your project to a special signature, like 9/8, for that no standard loops do exist.
Then check, if any loops actually are installed in your system Library: Depending on your GarageBand version you should find the standard loops in the Audio folder of your system Library (Application Support > GarageBand):
Your System Drive > Library > Audio > Apple Loops
If the Loops are installed, but GarageBand does not show them, you need to rebuild your Apple Loops Index: See the FAQ for how to do it:
Re-Index GarageBand's Loops
This requires two steps:
erase the old Apple Loops Index by deleting everything in
Your System Drive > Library > Audio > Apple Loops Index
and then rebuilding the Loops Index by dragging the folder containing all of your loops onto the Loop Browser in GarageBand.
If no Loops are installed in your Library, you will have to restore them from your Backup.

I'm having trouble with the guitar tuner in the new Garageband ..locked on C, no response! I've read that opening and locking a couple of times will unfreeze it but that's not working for me. Any suggestions?

Having trouble with garageband loops are out of time with other loops

having trouble with garageband have bought loops from primeloops and beat loops are not in time when i paste other loops down for example certain loops do not lock into measure region correctly .. so say for instance i lay down my beat then i try to add hi hat below and the beat is not in time with hi hat any awnsers may have pressed some setting accidently because this hasn t happened before as previously using these loops were all in time and locked at correct measures ..

Trouble having headset mic work on GarageBand

I am having trouble getting the mic to work on my headset on GarageBand. It's a Cyber Acoustic AC-201 (most likely - I am unsure since I bought them way before I got my MacBook). Can anyone tell me how to set it up/get it to work on GarageBand? I mean I use this mic for Rosetta Stone and it works great but when I use GarageBand it simply doesn't work.

Help! Trouble connecting RNP to 828mk2 and Garageband setup?

Okay, so we started trying to use the 828mk2 for recording today. We're setting levels for the two onboard preamps with no problem. We're still waiting on Logic in the mail so we're using Garageband presently. When it came to getting the levels for the RNP I got nothing when recording with GB. I tried as many things as I could think of. I'd refer to my 828mk2 manual but that is currently on it's way in the mail as well...how do I connect the RNP to the 828mk2? I tried running the mic into the xlr-in with phantom power engaged for my sm81 and cranked the gain until I heard it throught the phones. I ran the output into the 3rd input because the 1st and 2nd were being used on board(I also tried plugging it into the 1st, 2nd and 4th on back of the 828mk2 to no avail). I could hear it in the headphones but Garageband would not recognize the signal. I tried setting the input on GB to the matching inputs on the 828mk2 and tried other input settings- no signal getting to GB...What am I doing wrong? We really would like to fool around with some recording this weekend but it will be hard withough more than two preamps.
Also, this is funny; the first input, Channel A on the RNP, the phantom power button will not light up but it does on Channel B...?
I'm really confused PLease help!

I do have the preferences set for firewire MOTu 828mk2 Audio interface in and out of the computer. I then set the input on GB, (from the bottom right of the screen) to where I expect it should be recording from. When the RNP's output is hooked up to the 3rd line-in on the 828mk2 I choose, 'input: Channel 3(mono)'. If it's hooked up to the 1st line in input on the back I choose 'channel 1(mono)' and so. This worked for the two onboard preamps in the audio interface but won't for my outboard preamp(I apologize for not clarifying that the RNP was a preamp). What am I doing wrong?

Trouble playing GarageBand songs in iTunes

I've created a few cool songs in GarageBand, and I want to play them in iTunes and on my iPod, however, when I try to save them as mp3 files so iTunes can recognize them, I get an error message saying the required extension in .band
Any help?

Having trouble with newest Garageband, jpegs, and file icons

I've been part of a podcast for years and we've always used GB. We recently got a new laptop (that came with a newer version of GB) for the show. Now, for some reason, the jpeg we've been using as our file icon doesn't work anymore. I've tried opening the jpeg in 'preview' and copying it, then pasting it in 'Get info" of the actual mp4 (highlight the icon in top left corner, etc) but it doesn't really work. It changes the way the file is displayed in 'finder' but not in Itunes or when anyone downloads it from our website. Any thoughts or ideas?

The new GarageBand 10 does no longer support podcasts. If you still have the GarageBand '11 installer from your previous Mac, install Garageband '11, version 6.0.5 and use that to share your podcast to iTunes.

Voiceover trouble in garageband 10.0.1

Hi, I am blind and uses voiceover to navigate my mac. I found voiceover and mac most more useful than windows machines and all the software that made from apple like the ilife package works perfectly. I am playing some instruments and also uses garageband to record my EP-s. I used garageband 6.0.5 and everything works perfectly. I had to use the cmd-option-shift-arrowkeys to navigate to the effectaddingpanel and other things in the edit panel. You know when you can choose the two options navigate or edit. I also used that voiceover key combination to find the volume and pan contral for the tracks.
One more thing that is really helpful to me is the keyboard shortcuts for example r for record and z for go to beginning of tracks and space for play and pause. Now i have updated to garageband 10.0.1 and the screen is sat up in a different way so now i don’t understand a thing of what i can do to find this panels with effects and volume controls for eatch track. Also the keyboard shortcuts dosnt work. Can you please help me with my problem and tie me a list over the new shortcuts?
I understand that it is much to ask about , but i really need this help to keep on working with music.

Hey, If anyone knows if I can use the garageband software on a non apple just give me some feedback. I have an Compaq with vista. I want the Garageband feature for mixing purposes. If you know of any issues I'd appreciate the input.

Can't be done. There are other DAWs though that work with Vista.

Trouble using USB keyboard with GarageBand

I have a Yamaha DGX-305 keyboard with a USB out. I want to record the real instrument using GarageBand, rather than using MIDI input. Is this possible? GarageBand isn't recognizing the keyboard when I simply plug it in. I've downloaded what looks to be the appropriate driver form the Yamaha site. It sounds like some keyboards are set up for plug-and-play. Is there a way I can get this to work where GarageBand records the real instrument via USB? Thanks.

New to logic and garageband, having trouble transferring files

I recently bought a macbook so I'm just kinda figuring out garageband and logic express 7. I was trying to transfer some garageband files over to logic and I kept getting a message saying "damaged song or not a logic express song" Does anyone know why this may be happening and how to fix the problem?

Check your version numbers - there are some 'gotchas' depending on the versions you're using.
For example, LE 7.2.3 at a minimum is necessary to run on a new MacBook. However, if you have a latest version of GB (and you probably do, as it's included on new Macs), then IIRC, Logic 7.2.3 won't open GB 4.+ files - you'll need to upgrade to LE 8. There are some other incompatibilities too - if you could post your version numbers, you'll get some more specific help.

Having trouble starting up garageband

Everytime I try to start up garageband it shows this intializing status window. Then it quits and then when I try to reopen it, the window shows up again and then I have to force quit. What should I do? I've tried reinstalling it from the install disk for OS X and it does the same thing.
