Garbage characters appearing in CHM Index pane

Help! I have a CHM that has garbage characters appearing in
the Index pane. It is only when accessing the 'p' section of the
index. Here is a link to the screenshot so you can see what I mean:
Garbage
characters in Index pane of CHM screenshot
I don't know why this is suddenly appearing.
I am using RoboHelp 6 on Windows XP Pro.
Any suggestions on how I can fix this? Do I need to recompile
the index? If so, how do I do that?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Dirk,
Thanks for taking the time to help me. Here are the answers
to your questions.
Q: Do the index links work in these cases?
A: Yes the links work fine.
Q: What does the topic titles look like in these files?
A: The titles look normal. Is there something I should be
looking for?
Q: What do the properties of these entries look like?
A: What specific properties do you mean?
Q: Is this one help system or do you merge?
A: This is one single help file, no merged projects.
Q: Is there any translation involved at any point?
A: No
Q: Open the project's HHK-file with Notepad and look at the
first lines. Is there any codepage statement?
A: No. Here are the first few lines:

• Garbage characters appearing in help topics converted from RH6 to RH7

We have a couple of FlashHelp projects that we're converting
to RoboHelp 7. Documents were in imported from Word to create
topics and although the true code showed an asci character that
looked like a thick vertical bar for dashes (em dashes), ellipses,
and smart quotes, everything displayed fine in RoboHelp 6.
We just started converting these same RH6 projects to
RoboHelp 7 and now, we're getting garbage characters in place of
smart quotes, em dashes, etc. when we display the compile help
topics. What's weird is that the characters look fine when your in
WYSIWYG mode -- you have to display the topic to see the funky
characters.
With 900 topics in one project and 400+ in another, going
through the true code to find these funky characters is going to be
time consuming and painful. Did it for a couple of small projects
(less than 100 topics) and it took me a couple of hours --
switching back & forth between WYSIWYG and true code.
I tried using the search and replace tool to fix the smart
quotes throughout the project and it caught some but not all.
Seemed to capture the opening quote but not the end quote.
Any suggestions on how to quickly fix these problems without
going topic by topic through the project file checking the true
code.

See Item 21 on this page.

• Index Entries Appearing Incorrectly in .CHM Index

**I made a post regarding RH7 and issues with the indexing feature...since then, I have come across more issues, hence why I am doing a new post**
I have RH7 and before I was having troubles with keywords being missed from the index in the generated .chm. I would open the index in RH and then compare it to the index in the .chm file-some keywords would be missing. This was occurring with all projects converted from RH X5 to RH7.
Now, I have a project that was started in RH7-it has not been converted from a previous version. I am not seeing issues with missing keywords but I am noticing that some keywords are being misplaced in the .chm index. For example, "demand dates" in the RH index has not sub-keywords. In the generated .chm, there are two sub-keywords under "demand dates", neither one anywhere close to being related to the keyword. When I looked for the keyword they SHOULD be under, it was not there.
I have installed all three RH fixes on my laptop, and I have even deleted every single index entry and re-entered them. My last guess is, could it be that the template I use was created in another version of RH? The template file has been converted to RH7.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated-I have research this topic quite a bit and cannot turn up any answers and it is hindering project production.
Thanks!

Hi there
Screen shots? Nooo, screen shots. Where see screen shots?
Have you tried right-clicking in the Index Designer and choosing Sort?
Are the keywords possibly stored inside the topics and not the HHK? When you see them in the Index Designer, is the icon that of a page with a key instead of just a key?
Cheers... Rick

• Adobe PDF printer 'printing' garbage characters

Acrobat Professional v9.5.0 (Acrobat reports there are no updates available)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
I print from various applications and web pages to my 'Adobe PDF' printer to save things as PDF files.
Over the last several months, I have begun to have issues with printing to my Adobe PDF printer. This issue happened twice just yesterday, actually.
I will be looking at a web page, and choose to print it to PDF (a purchase receipt for example). I supply the filename and choose to print, and Acrobat will bring up the newly created PDF and it will have garbage characters in various places.
If I try printing it to PDF again, I get the same results.
However, if I print the item to Microsoft XPS format, it works just fine and all the characters are readable.
I don't know what to do. I saw an article about embedding the fonts, but it appears that all the standard 'web safe fonts' are already set to be embedded in PDF files via distiller (if that is what is actually doing the printing to create the PDF). If I have to choose more fonts to embed into the PDF, it seems to be extremely difficult to determine what fonts are being used by each site or application and choosing them all manually to be embedded in the files.
Surely there has to be a simpler solution to this issue.

I too had this annoying issue, usually printing from https sites, although the site address may be coincidental.
What worked for me was:
Select Print
In the print dialog box, select Adobe PDF and then Preferences.
In the Printing Preferences dialog box the tab should be Adobe PDF Settings
Uncheck the box next to Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts
Select OK
If the box is already unchecked, it might be caused by something similar. This worked so I went no further. I have not yet checked to see if this must be done each time or how to make it default.

• Removing numerals/garbage characters from search in Section 508 build WebHelp

I need to remove (prevent inclusion of) numerals and garbage characters from search results in WebHelp when compiled with Section 508 Output enabled. I need to have Section 508 enabled. Can that be done?
Thanks for your time!

Thanks, Jeff. I tried including the characteres in the Stop list and recompiling. (I even closed the project and reopened.) The characters still appear. The characters I'm trying to remove are: !, #, ', (, ), -, /, :, ;, and ,. I am also trying to exclude some numbers (100.00usd, 1999.99, 2999.99, 3999.99, 4999.99, and 6pm).
The Stop list consists of those characters and the default text. Forgot to mention is the first post ... I'm using RH9.
The Section 508 flag does create 508-compliant HTML output and that is one of the requirements for this help system. This is the first time I am enabling this flag.

• Garbage Characters in CDE Window Title Bar

I recently patched our Solaris 8 Sun workstations (a mixture of Blade 150, Ultra10, Blade 1500, and Blade 2000) with the recommended patch cluster from December 19th, 2005. At the same time, I updated the systems' Java to 1.4.2_10, and installed Update 5 to StarOffice7, which is still on the systems along with the newer StarOffice8.
When initially installed before these recent patches, StarOffice8 behaved correctly. After updating the systems, when I open StarOffice8 in a CDE session, I get garbage characters in the title bar of the window. The letters and fonts in the application menus are normal. StarOffice8 windows under Gnome sessions are titled correctly.
I've read some emails about issues with LC_CTYPE and setting it to en_US.ISO8859-15, using a wrapper script to start soffice. The current setting on my machines is en_US.ISO8859-1. That solution doesn't work consistently on different machines (or even on the same machine).
In fact, even without attempting to solve the problem, there is inconsistent behavior. On one Ultra10 which I have as a testbed machine, StarOffice8 behaves correctly, whether I'm logged in as a normal user, or as root. On a Blade 1500, it behaves correctly when logged in as root, but not as a normal user. I've also patched StarOffice8 with Update1 which was released today, but it doesn't fix the problem.
Anybody else having similar problems after recent patching? Or have any suggestions for a solution?
Jeff Bailey

More Info on Unsolved Problem:
If I use Mozilla to open a document file, with soffice set as the helper application, the CDE window title displays properly. If I leave that instance of StarOffice open, and open new documents using the menus within StarOffice, subsequent CDE titles also display normally. Also with that original Mozilla-driven StarOffice application still open, if I use "soffice whatever.doc" on a command line, those CDE windows appear normal.
Mozilla is set to use "en_US" as the language for webpages, with Western ISO-8859-1 as the default character coding. The Solaris 8 workstation's /etc/default/init file is configured as:
TZ=US/Eastern
CMASK=022
LC_COLLATE=en_US.ISO8859-1
LC_CTYPE=en_US.ISO8859-1
LC_MESSAGES=C
LC_MONETARY=en_US.ISO8859-1
LC_NUMERIC=en_US.ISO8859-1
LC_TIME=en_US.ISO8859-1
While the Mozilla "wrapper" is a workaround for now, I don't see it as a final solution.

• Router reports garbage characters for Mac's DHCP client hostname

I've got a Linksys wifi router giving nice wireless access to my 17" powerbook (OSX 10.3.9). But when I look at the DHCP active IP table, this one (and another Mac I have on the network) both show up with garbage characters on the "client hostname" even though I have the "DHCP client Id" field filled in in the Network, TCP/IP system preference pane. How do I get the router to see my client's name?
Mike

Might help if you told us what the "garbage" was. It
might help indentify what it relates to because it's
highly unlikely to be truly random. It's more likely
to be based on the client's MAC address.
ok. It is, exactly: ¸#Єª
In any case, DHCP client ID and hostname are not
related, so you might be out of luck depending on
what the Linksys is doing.
ah! Sorry - I thought that's what it wanted. So, where on my machine do I set the client hostname? Where does a router grab this info from? I've got a PC connected to this thing which does report its name correctly.
Thanks,
Mike

• T500 Keyboard types garbage characters

I've seen this problem occasionally both on Vista and now on Windows 7 (64-bit) - now and then when I type on the keyboard I get garbage characters on the screen. The characters seem to appear in ASCII-code order, for example if I type 'http' I might see '1234' or some other 4-character sequence, in order. This has happened in Thunderbird, and goes away after a while. It isn't specific to Thunderbird, if I'm in the 'garbage character' mode and open a Notepad window, for example, it will also display incorrect characters. After closing a few things and re-opening, it eventually clears up (I'm not sure about the exact sequence that corrects it).
I've searched this forum and other places but not seen any references to a similar problem. Any ideas would be welcome!

This problem is still happening, occasionally and randomly. For example, just before typing this post (which is working normally, it seems), I was using another app and had the problem. I opened Notepad, and typed "jjjjjjjjj", repeatedly, and this is what appeared on the screen:
qwertyuiop[]asdfghjkl;'`\zxcvbnm,./-+\1234567890-=
and would repeat if I continued to type any letters at all (didn't matter if it was "j" or any other letter, the same sequence appeared). Then, I switched to the Spanish keyboard, and tried the same thing and saw:
qwertyuiop´+asdfghjklñ{|}zxcvbnm,.--+<1234567890'¿
Again, it would repeat endlessly as long as I kept typing something.
The shift key would produce the corresponding capital or shifted characters (i.e. "%" instead of "5").
It clears up spontaneously, but is rather annoying when it happens.
It is not caps-lock or num-lock related, nor apparently multiple-language-keyboard related.
Any clues???
Thanks!

Purchased an NX6800 TD128 on Saturday. Put it in the machine last night and all I get is garbage characters flashing on the screen
The Windows XP logo appears after a few seconds, this time with flashing green lines down the screen. The machine then either hangs with white flashing characters onscreen, or it reboots. If it reboots, same happens again. The spec is ...

1 x DVD ROM
2 x 160Gb Western Digital HDD

Hi retro-squirrel
One thing you should know before you post a problem is to give a more precise signature . If you don't give the max amps of your PSU (3.3v/5v/12v), make and type of ram (preferably with lat & cas), most of the moderators won't bother answering. I would imagine they are sick of telling people to make more informative signatures . Here is a link to give you a hand...
Suggestions on posting and getting better answers
This is from GlennVidia who is one of the mods from this area, if you fix up your sig he may be able to steer you in the right direction. He is very knowledgable and extremely helpful . I'll pop back later to see how you are going. Hopefully you don't have to RMA that card of yours.

• Photoshop CS3 printing garbage characters on HP LaserJet 1300

After installing CS3, Photoshop prints garbage characters on my HP LaserJet 1300.
Yes, I have tried printing as ASCII, ASCII85, Binary and JPEG - nothing helps (plus the settings won't stick even after holding down Alt and clicking the Remember button).
The only way to print right now is to choose Save as PDF in the print dialogue, open the PDF in Adobe Reader and print from there.
Any ideas?

tzw - I responded about this on another forum. I talked to technical support at Adobe about this exact issue about 2 months ago - can't print photoshop CS3 on any of my three HP printers. ( I have a HP1200, an HP 2550 and a HP photosmart 7660) (CS2 works fine) They worked with me for about an hour - called me back and worked some more, and then decided to send it up to the programmers (or engineers or whatever) The programmers called me and worked with me for another hour - trying different set-ups etc., but the conclusion by them was that this was a huge problem in that there were a lot of HP printers out there - that they were going to give this their top priority - and that there would be a fix for this soon. (I have yet to see a fix.)

• My ipod does not appear in the source pane

I must have done a big mistake as I have got a windows computer at home but plugged my ipod on my mac computer at work. From that day my ipod got empty. I thought going home and plugging it bac in my laptop the problem would it be fixed, but hasn't worked. I have tried any step available from thesupport site. Install and unistall everything about 100 times. The message that keeps appearing when I plug my ipod nano on my computer is: "ITUNES NO PUEDE LEER EL CONTENIDO DEL "IPOD DE XXX". HAGA CLICK EN RESTAURAR PARA RESTAURAR LOS AJUSTES DE FÁBRICA DEL IPOD", which it means I should restore to the factory setting, but once I tried to do it, on one of the steps takes from granteed that my Ipod appears on the soure pane of ITUNES, which it does not ever happen. I have found my Ipod file on the windows system and followed all the steps on that issue, but there has not been any kind of result. I have tried the menu in my ipod to restore it from itself but does not work..well, I have tried anything available from the advices from apple(have spent more than 4 hours on it) but can't get my ITUNES to recognice anything. By the way, I have aslo uninstalled my IPOD and with the CDroom, tryied to installed the whole thing again,..but nothinggg. GOt I tunes version 7. Any advice will be very helpful as I cannot stand going to work on the bus for an hour without my music...and Cannot afford another IPOD at the mo..
Thanks in advanced.

I have a very similar problem but I have done the 5 Rs and more---multiple times--and my iPOD and iTunes are just stuck in an endless cycle of Restore and Restart but rather than showing up in the source panel so I can put my music back on, the icon appears and tells me to restore again. I did everything including checking my USB ports etc. in My Computer and my iPOD refuses to get out of this cycle when iTUNES does bother to recognize it. Any suggestions other than the 5 Rs---because they are doing absolutely nothing.

• Garbled characters appear in PDF's generated in Acrobat XI 11.0.10

Adobe: when generating PDF's using Acrobat XI 11.0.10, garbled characters appear on complete lines on otherwise legible generated pages. Adobe Acrobat says no updates are available. Please advise what workaround(s) should be used to prevent this. The problem seems to be increasing lately.
Platform: Windows 7.
Steps to troubleshoot: have no idea where to start other than updating Acrobat which has already been done.

You probably are using some strange fonts that Acrobat can not embed due to licensing and are not viewing with system fonts. Be sure all the fonts are embedded (document properties -- ctrl-D).

Check this SAP Note: https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/821267
From the above SAP Note:

Important: Even if you configure a File Encoding in the File Adapter channel, the File Adapter will not
