Garbage collection & memory management causing app to run poorly on iOS 7
Sorry I post the same question but in the wrong forum (I posted it in the Flash Player Beta Channel).
Hi, I am currently working on a game built using Air SDK v. 3.8 that is running fine on iOS 6. However, since the release of iOS, sometime it becomes unresponsive. When profiling with Adobe Scout, the problem seems to have something to do with the garbage collection. In Scout, some GC pass could take up to few seconds on iOS 7, while it would never take more than 700 ms on iOS 6.
I've tried to compile the project using the new 3.9 beta, and the result is somewhere in between what we've got on iOS 6 and iOS 7 (1-2 seconds).
I'm wondering if this is something that you are aware of, and if there's a fix (or optimisation) around the corner. Thanks a lot.
I am also seeing this.
Here are screenshots of Scout profiling the same sequence in my game on iPad 2 iOS 7 vs iPad 2 iOS 6. The initial burst of activity is a loading sequence, followed by automated gameplay.
iOS 7: Please note the position of the red line on the graph, and the time associated with garbage collection.
iOS 6:
Ignoring the "loading sequence" section, the "vertical line" garbage collection spikes on the iOS 7 screen shot are on the order of 2-5 seconds (garbage collection time) each. The biggest spikes in the iOS 6 screen shot are all < 50 ms in comparison (again, note the position of the red line on the graph).
Earlier in the day I captured a few garbage collection spikes on iOS 7 that were > 10 seconds each, with the largest being a whopping 24 seconds.
Any insights, supporting evidence, or alternative theories are appreciated.
UPDATE: I tested an iPad3 iOS7 today and did not experience this behavior.
UPDATE: I tested with another iPad2 iOS7 and did see the behavior on that device as well.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -

My iPad still runs poorly on iOS 8.0.2
My iPad 2 with wifi + AT&T data was severely impaired by iIO 8, and later iOS 8.0.2. I have communicated my problems directly to Apple tech support, visited with the genius bar on two occasions and followed the forums carefully. I have tried everything suggested on the forums, including wiping the iPad completely and setting up as a new iPad. It still runs poorly, has cut-and-paste issues, jerky scrolling, dropping AT&T data every time I close out, etc. Does anyone who IS NOT Philly_Phan or Star Traveler HONESTLY have a solution that works?

Hey Smart Apples,
My iTunes Artwork screen saver is not working. After reboot, then selecting iTunes Artwork in System Preferences, just a black screen appears in the preview, as well as when pressing Test, and when allowing the screen saver to start on it's own. The error message in Console says...
11-10-13 2:13:18.304 AM [0x0-0x4f04f].com.apple.systempreferences: System Preferences(540,0x7fff77286960) malloc: auto malloc[540]: attempted to remove unregistered weak referrer 0x102021a10
11-10-13 2:13:18.305 AM [0x0-0x4f04f].com.apple.systempreferences: System Preferences(540,0x7fff77286960) malloc: auto malloc[540]: attempted to remove unregistered weak referrer 0x102021a60
also...
11-10-13 3:31:38.722 AM [0x0-0x65065].com.apple.ScreenSaver.Engine: ScreenSaverEngine(727,0x7fff77286960) malloc: auto malloc[727]: attempted to remove unregistered weak referrer 0x109eac410
11-10-13 3:31:38.723 AM [0x0-0x65065].com.apple.ScreenSaver.Engine: ScreenSaverEngine(727,0x7fff77286960) malloc: auto malloc[727]: attempted to remove unregistered weak referrer 0x109eac460
The memory address location at the end of each line is different everytime I preview the screen saver.
I've tried...
deleting ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.* files
making sure each album has a cover in iTunes
running Get Album Artwork in iTunes
recreating symbolic link ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music -> ~/Public/iTunes Music/
... but doesn't help.
All other screen savers work... my usual is Flurry, and it works too, but gives invalid framebuffer operation under Console.
Nothing running/checked under Sharing.

Does anyone have a solution?
Environment: Mac OS X (10.7.2), Macbook Pro (late 2008)So it turned out that the cause of the problem wasn't as complicated as I thought...
I had a few songs that were not added to the iTunes library, instead referenced from other locations on my hard drive.
Specifically, if you bring up the Get Info window of a song, under Summary > Where, it may show a different path than your usual iTunes Media folder location, set under Preferences.
E.g. Where: ~/Desktop/downloaded_song.mp3
I guess, this happens when you drag a song into your iTunes instead of adding it to the library, and apparently, causes problems with the Artwork Screen Saver.
Solution:
To correct it,
For those songs, go to File > Add to Library...
Then find and select the song file.
That's all I had to do to get the screen saver working... All your songs have to be added to your iTunes Library.
I think my brother was messing around with my playlist... I hope Apple nails a better way to lock-unlock/secure OS X soon (proximity sensor, biometric 3D face recognition, unique voice recognition, soul recognition, etc.).
That malloc error message still shows up; that must be an unrelated issue with the screen saver.
I hope this helps out all those suffering through the same issue with their iTunes Artwork Screen Saver. -

IOS 5's iPad memory management deletes app data when memory is low.
ForeFlight claims iOS 5 includes a new file management feature that arbitarily deletes files to make room for new data when iPad memory is insufficient. The only warning given to the iPad user is a "cleaning" symbol. This makes no sense to me. Something is missing from this story. Has anyone heard of this.
Read ForeFlight's warning to its user base here: http://blog.foreflight.com/2011/10/14/flying-with-foreflight-and-ios-5/I think that makes it quite clear:

Many apps dont run properly on iOS 5 and I have lost some saved game data.
After upgrading to iOS 5, some of the games( ice age: dawn of the dinosaurs(chillingo inc.), Icy Escort(Donut games)) doent run properly. In ice age, sometimes the sondtrack doesnt run properly, it gets stuck in the middle, and starts repeating itself again and again after very short periods and in icy escort, sometimes there is stange flashing. Another game, Kick buttowski: Loco Launcho(disney mobile), my whole save data got erased. I also use a iPhone and i had downloaded ice age for iPhone, later put it inti my iPad 2. Therefore, its only for iPhone. Other apps are universal. I have also updated my iphone to iOS 5 but restored it from my iPad backup. In iPhone, Ice age runs fine but Kick buttowski save data is also erased. I updated my iPhone after updating my iPad. Please help.
Agreed! This bug with the ringtone delay (№4.1) is really annoying

after upgrading to IOS 8 my iPad 2 has multiple problems, among them: slow running. frequent crashes. freezing, and more. Is there any fix for this?
I regained control of my iPad 2 last night after having endured weeks of extreme slowness with iOS 8!!! Unfortunately it involves restoring it from scratch. I personally restored it from the DFU mode (see link) but am not sure if the DFU mode is absolutely necessary. I ended up restoring when the iPad 2 finally got stuck with the Apple logo while restarting. So I think the extreme slowness is just a symptom of more serious corruption of the device that will eventually cause it to fail restarting. I personally had a 5 day old backup in iTunes so the device was restored to an almost identical state. But if you have an up to date backup there shouldn't be any noticeable differences in content after the restore. The entire process does take a long time, but it is well worth it seeing that my iPad 2 is almost as fast as the day I got it!!!
So in summary:
- connect iPad to iTunes and make a full backup
- restart iPad in DFU mode
- iTunes will tell you that it detected an iPad which needs a full restore to factory settings and update
- iTunes will download iOS 8.1 (as of this date), then will restart your iPad and proceed with the wipe and reinstall
- after iOS/firmware reinstallation, iTunes will restart the iPad again and will tell you to leave it connected so it can restore from the backup
- the iPad will successfully restart at which point you can swipe to unlock; it will tell you that it was restored and offers you to set a locking passcode again
- at the same tim iTunes will give a list of backups to restore from - select your last iPad backup
- after a while depending on the amount of stuff that you had the restore will complete and you will be happy again!! -
RE: (forte-users) memory management
Brenda,
When a partition starts, it reserves the MinimumAllocation. Within this
memory space, objects are created and more and more of this memory is
actually used. When objects are no longer referenced, they remain in memory
and the space they occupy remains unusable.
When the amount of free memory drops below a certain point, the garbage
collector kicks in, which will free the space occopied by all objects that
are no longer referenced.
If garbage collecting can't free enough memory to hold the additional data
loaded into memory, then the partition will request another block of memory,
equal to the IncrementAllocation size. The partition will try to stay within
this new boundary by garbage collecting everytime the available part of this
memory drops below a certain point. If the partition can't free enough
memory, it will again request another block of memory.
This process repeats itself until the partition reaches MaximumAllocation.
If that amount of memory still isn't enough, then the partition crashes.
Instrument ActivePages shows the memory reserved by the partition.
AllocatedPages shows the part of that memory actually used.
AvailablePages shows the part ot that memory which is free.
Note that once memory is requested from the operating system, it's never
released again. Within this memory owned by the partition, the part actually
used will always be smaller. But this part will increase steadily, until the
garbage collecter is started and a part of it is freed again.
There are some settings that determine when the garbage collector is
started, but I'm not sure which ones they are.
The garbage collector can be started from TOOL using
"task.Part.OperatingSystem.RecoverMemory()", but I'm not sure if that will
always actually start the garbage collector.
If you track AllocatedPages of a partition, it's always growing, even if the
partition isn't doing anything. I don't know why.
If you add AllocatedPages and AvailablePages, you shoud get the value of
ActivePages, but you won't. You always get a lower number and sometimes even
considerably lower. I don't know why.

I have been reading up on memory management and the
OperatingSystemAgent, and could use some clarification...
When a partition is brought online, is the ActivePages value set to the
MinimumAllocation value, and expanded as required?
And what is the difference between the ExpandAtPercent and
ContractAtPercent functions?
Thanks in advance,
Brenda

shared libraries (DLL's) which are a number of megabytes in size. The
space is taken by the application binary, plus the loaded DLL's, plus
whatever the current size of garbage collected memory is.
Forte allocates a garbage-collected heap that must be bigger than the size
of the allocated objects. So if you start with an 8MB heap, you will always
have at least 8MB allocated, no matter what objects you actually
instantiate. See "Memory Issues" in the Forte System Management Guide.

Synchronisation of Garbage Collections in Coherence Storage Nodes
Hi,
We have noticed an issue in Coherence 3.5 whereby the Garbage Collections on the storage nodes are run in parallel with one another.
Whilst we have not seen any major issues with this so far, it is of concern to us as having several storage nodes become unresponsive simultaneously may lead to cluster splits, service slowdown/unavailability, unnecessary rebalancing of data, and lost data.
Has anyone else experienced this issue before? If so, what approach, if any, did you take to resolve it? Is using data affinity the solution?
CheersHi
As you probably know, Coherence has no control over garbage collection.
Here is a set of GC options for proper use of CMS on multi-core platform for a Hotspot 1.6.0_xx JVM (where xx must be >= 22 for some options to work properly). You may need to experiment with these values to derive the best performance for your application.
-server
-d64 (Solaris and HP-UX for 64-bit JVM; for 32-bit JVM -d32; other platforms have separate 32-bit and 64-bit installs)
-verbose:gc (writes GC log to stdout; use -Xloggc to direct it to some custom location)
-Xms<heapsize>m
-Xmx<heapsize>m
-XX:PermSize=<permsize>m
-XX:MaxPermSize=<permsize>m
-XX:NewSize=<up to heapsize/2>m
-XX:MaxNewSize=<up to heapsize/2>m
-XX:+HandlePromotionFailure
-XX:TargetSurvivorRatio=<nn> (somewhere between 60 to 80, decrease if you note direct Survivor space overflow)
-XX:MaxTenuringThreshold=8
-XX:SoftRefLRUPolicyMSPerMB=5000 ("a soft reference will survive (after the last strong reference to the object has been collected) for 5000ms times the number of megabytes of free space in the heap")
-XX:+AggressiveOpts
-XX:+DoEscapeAnalysis (from 1.6.0_22)
-XX:+UseCompressedOops (only on 64-bit JVM, from 1.6.0_22)
-XX:+DisableExplicitGC
-XX:+UseParNewGC
-XX:ParallelGCThreads=<between numcores und numcores/2 - e.g. numcores * 3/4>
-XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC
-XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled
-XX:+ParallelRefProcEnabled
-XX:CMSInitiatingOccupancyFraction=<nn> (start with 75 and decrease in case CMS cannot keep up with the app)
-XX:+UseCMSInitiatingOccupancyOnly
-XX:-TraceClassUnloading
-XX:+PrintTenuringDistribution
-XX:+PrintGCDateStamps
-XX:+PrintGCDetails
-XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError
Do not combine "ParallelGC" with CMS, you need to switch to "ParNewGC" to do so... (This is one of the more-or-less hidden secrets of Hotspot GC tuning.)

Why can't I download Creative Cloud apps when running Linux?

"You are running an operating system that Photoshop no longer supports. Refer to the system requirements below for a full list of supported platforms."
I have an active membership, why do you care which operating system I run? (I am not talking about installation or anything else)
In my opinion it's bad practice to exclude your customers from downloading the products they paid for!
Looking forward to an explanation! Thanks. Most of the Adobe applications only run on Windows and Mac OS. You can see the System Requirements by going to https://creative.adobe.com/products and choosing a product. Then chose the System Requirements tab. So for Photoshop you will see:
There are the Touch app which run mostly on iOS with PS Touch running on Android too.

Managing gigabytes with Java garbage collection ?
I am at the early stage of Java development project (kind of a memory based database index server) which easily involves managing 500.000+ very large Java objects (array based as this is the only way to use memory efficiently in Java) + a couple of millions of smaller objects.
Most of the objects are long lived but some (query) operations involve temporary creation of several 100MB+ sized objects. The app should run on Windows or Unix\Linux and will probably require/use up to 1-2GB of RAM (max possible on typical 32bit OS). At best it should be able to run under the JDK1.3+ hotspot VM.
I am concerned that the garbage collection by the VM may be a problem. While the app does not have real-time requirements, most (query) operations ought to complete in less than a second. Frequent complete GC freezes of say 5+ seconds would not be acceptable.
Anyone with experience on this ? Do you expect that I will get a problem with Java garbage collection or am I too concerned about this ?Anyone with experience on this ? Do you expect that I
will get a problem with Java garbage collection or am
I too concerned about this ?With an application that size, yes, you will run into problems, unless you are very careful.
Not being familiar with your applications memory allocation and access patterns, it's hard to be more specific. Perhaps something like 1.4.1's incremental GC will help in your case, but simply getting the VM to allocate and manage 2GB of memory will be a challenge.
Caveat emptor..
(See if you can split your application into smaller applications that can be run in different virtual machines; as long as each application's virtual machine doesn't grow too large, the GC problem will be manageable, and more importantly, you'll be able to use more than 2GB of memory comfortably). -
High Eden Java Memory Usage/Garbage Collection
Hi,
I am trying to make sure that my Coldfusion Server is optomised to the max and to find out what is normal limits.
Basically it looks like at times my servers can run slow but it is possible that this is caused by a very old bloated code base.
Jrun can sometimes have very high CPU usage so I purchased Fusion Reactor to see what is going on under the hood.
Here are my current Java settings (running v6u24):
java.args=-server -Xmx4096m -Xms4096m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:PermSize=256m -Dsun.rmi.dgc.client.gcInterval=600000 -Dsun.rmi.dgc.server.gcInterval=600000 -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -XX:+UseParallelGC -Xbatch ........
With regards Memory, the only memory that seems to be running a lot of Garbage Collection is the Eden Memory Space. It climbs to nearly 1.2GB in total just under every minute at which time it looks like GC kicks in and the usage drops to about 100MB.
Survivor memory grows to about 80-100MB over the space of 10 minutes but drops to 0 after the scheduled full GC runs. Old Gen memory fluctuates between 225MB and 350MB with small steps (~50MB) up or down when full GC runs every 10 minutes.
I had the heap set to 2GB initally in total giving about 600MB to the Eden Space. When I looked at the graphs from Fusion Reactor I could see that there was (minor) Garbage Collection about 2-3 times a minute when the memory usage maxed out the entire 600MB which seemed a high frequency to my untrained eye. I then upped the memory to 4GB in total (~1.2GB auto given to Eden space) to see the difference and saw that GC happened 1-2 times per minute.
Is it normal in Coldfusion that the Eden memory would grow so quickly and have garbage collection run so often? i.e do these graphs look normal?
Also should I somehow redistribute the memory available to give the Eden memory more since it seems to be where all the action is?
Any other advice for performance improvements would be much appreciated.
Note: These graphs are not from a period where jrun had high CPU.

Yes normal to garbage collect Eden often. That is a minor garbage collection.
>Also should I somehow redistribute the memory available to give the Eden memory more since it seems to be where all the action is?
Sometimes it is good to set Eden (Eden and its two Survivor Spaces combined make up New or Young Generation part of JVM heap) to a smaller size. I know your thinking - what make it less, but I want to make it bigger. Give less a try (sometimes less = more, bigger not = better) and monitor the situation. I like to use -Xmn switch, some sources say to use other method/s. Perhaps you could try java.args=-server -Xmx4096m -Xms4096m -Xmn172m etc. I better mention make a backup copy of jvm.config before applying changes. Having said that now you know how you can set the size to bigger if you want.
I think the JVM is perhaps making some poor decisions with sizing the heap. With Eden growing to 1Gb then being evacuated not many objects are surviving and therefore not being promoted to Old Generation. This ultimately means the object will need to be loaded again latter to Eden rather than being referenced in the Old generation part of the heap. Adds up to poor performance.
>Any other advice for performance improvements would be much appreciated.
You are using Parallel garbage collector. Perhaps you could enable that to run multi-threaded reducing the time duration of the garbage collections, jvm args ...-XX:+UseParallelGC -XX:ParallelGCThreads=N etc where N = CPU cores (eg quad core = 4).

No garbage collection data/detailed memory use data in Wily?
Hi All,
We are running some portals on AIX (1.4.2 SR12). We have installed the wily agent on the portals and the enterprise manager on our solman server. When looking in the introscope workstation the heap usage of the JVMs are shown as it should. However, the J2EE GC Overview 1/2 & 2/2 don't show any detailed data regarding garbage collection and memory usage (e.g. tenured; eden; etc...). At this moment we use IBM PMAT for memory analysis, but this is not real time. We would like to see memory details real time using Wily.
Does anyone else also encounters this problem?
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
