Garbage Collection Problem

Hi All,
I am facing some problem with frequent Garbage Collection application running in the background. Issue in production system. Frequently GC is happening, which is affecting the performance. Is there any work around. Issue is affecting the employees and data is inconsistent.
Please help on this asap.

usually issues with GC are not that simple
also you need to check what kind of GC is happening first then you can start checking why
but my guess would be there is something wrong with the flow and this is causing the GC to work in a wrong way
(if it was working before)
when I did GC checks for my clients it was at least one day of work sometimes to find out what was wrong + repairs later on

  • Help needed!! Novice with Garbage Collection problems.

    Hi Guys,
    Really hoping somebody can help me here. I am a relative novice when it comes to all things Java but i am slowly trying to learn. I have come across an issue which i have identified but i am just not sure what to do about it.
    Ok, in a nut shell the issue seems to be revolving around the frequency of garbage collection. From the default-err.log file i am seeing (on average) an Allocation Failure occur every 2 secs. Here is a sample from the log with verbose:gc active:

    As you can see, allocation failures are occuring all the time, and with 2secs between events, and each GC taking around 1.5secs, i am having massive problems with the response of the server. It seems that the javaw.exe process is just pegged at 100% CPU the whole time and then it will eventually grind to a halt, and the users will get terrible response times.
    OK, the questions are:
    - Even to me (a novice) the above extract from the log doesnt look good. Am i right?
    - what would be causing this? (i know - how long is a peice of string but i am hoping somebody can point me in the right direction so i can look some more)
    - what can i do about it? Is there any parameters i can put into the java args to help me out?
    Currently i am running -Xms of 128meg and an -Xmx of 1024m with no other settings. There are at the moment about 200users logged onto this server concurrently, and it seems to die a couple of hours into them all being logged on. I then have to kick everybody out and reboot to get it in a working state again.
    I am in some serious need of help from some gurus!! any help would be invaluable, thanks heaps guys.

    I have been working my butt of on this issue and i just cant seem to get anywhere... probably due to my complete lack of knowledge on this whole GC thing! :)
    One thing that i have noticed that seems to be very consistant is the fact that as soon as i get an "action=2" in my default-err.log from an allocation failure, thats when the system goes nuts and tends to not recover.
    At all other times it is an action=1, and the system seems to be running OK, but as soon as i get action=2, the time between GC events drop from seconds to miliseconds, and the bytes required just skyrockets. It keeps on this upward spiral till i just have to reboot the box.
    From all my reading, i have found that an action=2 means "2 - The Garbage Collector has tried to allocate out of the wilderness, and failed."
    This is the only item in the logs that i see is directly related to the server performance.
    Can anybody please explain to me (in laymans terms) what the action=2 means, what may cause it and what i should be looking at changing to fix it?
    The extract from the log files (in my first post in this thread) are still valid, as are the min/max memory settings.
    Any help at all would be invaluable.

  • DataGrid Garbage Collection problem

    Hi,
    I'm quite confused about the DataGrid component's garbage collection. I've made a simple test code which adds a datagrid to the display list. If I remove the component from its parent without clicking any item, the element is collected correctly. However, if I click an item, the datagrid is no longer removed. Otherwise, if I use the keyborad to navigate through the items, the component is removed.
    The profiler doesn't display any inbound reference to the datagrid. So, what's the problem? Is Flex retaining any reference when I use the mouse?

  • Full Garbage Collection Problem

    Hi All,
    We are working on NetWeaver Application Server JAVA 7.0
    I am getting an error message in of the the EWA reports for JAVA system. The red alert says as below:
    The maximum ratio of full garbage collections to total garbage collections in the reported interval was higher than 90%.
    In order to solve the above problem, I increased Heap Memory for all JAVA Server nodes to 3072 (earlier it was 2048 for all the server nodes). However, still I am getting same error in EWA report.
    Can any one help me in further analysing and solving the above problem?

    It's also interesting, that I'm missing free space in the installation directory of Business Objects. There are no reports scheduled, but the directory still grows. Maybe it depends on problems with GC.
    Any idea? Is there a best practice, how to configure the jvm?

    Hello Deepu,
    The current plan for BI OnDemand is to support BOE 4.0 in the 2012 timeframe.  We have not yet worked out a specific date for the release, though.  The specific upgrade plan and long term feature roadmap is still under discussion for BI OnDemand.

  • Problem with video garbage collection

    I have problem with a cummulative memory issue. I have developed an air application that reproduces video when it is needed. Although my air process (myAir.exe) uses the same ammount of memory for days (stable, illustrating lack of development memory leak problems) the total system memory increases every time a video is being reproduced. Every time the video is stopped the memory used by this video is released but not completely resulting to a continuously increasing system memory. Is this a graphics card problem, an OS graphics garbage collection problem or an air development problem! Has anyone ever had a similar problem? Every response would be helpful.

  • Hotspot core dumping during JVM garbage collection ?

    We have an application which calls a 3rd party supplied server API which has recently been upgraded to use Java 1.5
    We are getting the following error reported by our client application. The application is also now running Java 1.5 but references many classes in jar files which would have quite old code in.
    The supplier of the API has stated that the problem requires us to recompile all our jar files using v 1.5 ( including things like jconnect and jms ?!?!? ). This sounds like a bit of a cop-out to me, not to mention being impossible since we don't have the source for things like jconnect.
    I suspect that there is a garbage collection problem at the bottom of all this, but I'm not sure how I can "prove" this, nor do I currently have any real clue as to how to fix any GC problem that may exist.
    The application is supposed to wait for a message on a MQSeries queue and then transforms it via Xalan XSLT and sends it to a Server application. I've tried playing around with heap sizes etc but that just seems to make it worse. If I leave it at the settings that the previous version used then the client at least manages to process a couple of messages before core dumping. There doesn't seem to be a consistent trigger event to cause the core dump ( it's not a message arriving on a queue for example ) but it does seem to be fairly consistent timewise, i.e. after

    The very first suggestion I have is to move your VM to a more recent update of 1.5.0.
    It looks like you are crashing with 5.0u3, and I'm pretty sure 5.0u16 is available. You
    don't want to waste your time chasing a bug that's already been fixed.

  • All Tweens randomly halting (Not Garbage Collection)

    I am developing a game with some AS3 tweens. I have encountered the problem of garbage collection affecting tweens before so I have all my tweens referenced at the class level now to ensure that isn't a problem. However, randomly all the current tweens in my game will stop. Other, non-tweened, frame by frame animations continue. It's just like the garbage collection problem but the tweens shouldn't be being collected...
    The code I am using for tweens:

    I have Swing based java project. Im setting all the

    You will find at some points during the execution process - that the JVM actually runs the GC on its own- but when not that is not defined.It is a low priority thread running under JVM.

  • Understanding Garbage Collection

    Garbase Collector collects any objects that the program cannot access. If an object cannot be accessed, it will be collected by the garbage collector if needed.
    Can someone explain with a simple example when an object cannot be garbase collected? preferably an example with 'String'

Garbage collection frees memory for use, and in this case, the variable text could still be referenced, even though it does not have a value. I might be wrong, but my guess would be that setting a variable to be null, would result in the location of memory allocated for the variable to be emptied (e.g. C-function memset). If the garbage collection would occur when the variable is set to null might cause problems, like so:

  • Performance problem due to garbage collection?

    Hallo,
    we implemented a digital whiteboard with JavaFX: there is a scene (3200 x 2400 px) on which you can draw (insert paths) and add post-its (colored rectangles with paths or string a content). It's possible to drag the post-its around and it's also possible to pan the scene (to reach all parts of the scene which don't fit into the windows).
    The application works quite fast even with ca. 50 post-its and lots of skribbles/drawings. But after ca. 20 minutes the application gets a lot slower. Drawing curves (or handwriting) is not really possible anymore as the paths get angular and moving a post-it takes longer and longer.
    How is this possible? Is there a problem with the JavaFX garbage collection? Does anyone else have the problem that the application gets slower after a while?
    When I close the window and load it again with the same elements it's as quick as in the beginning and slows down after ca. 20 min. again.

    I can't really answer...
    We can eliminate saturation of scenegraph capabilities since you can reload it again without problem (at start).
    Maybe you create lot of temp objects that aren't properly collected?
    I suggest to run JVisualVM on your application and watch its memory (and CPU) usage.

  • High cpu usage for garbage collection (uptime vs total gc time)

    We have a very high cpu usage issue in the production.
    When we restart the server, the cpu idle time would be around 95% and it comes down as days goes by. Today idle cpu is 30% and it is just 6th day after the server restart.
    Environemnt details:

    One more thing I would like to know is that why the total number of threads is 198 when we specified the Executor pool size as 25? I agree that weblogic would create some threads for its maintenance but around 160 threads!!! something is wrong I guess.

    I'm having a similar problem, but haven't been able to resolve it yet. Troubleshooting is made even harder by the fact that this is only happening on our production server, and I've been unable to reproduce it in the lab.
    I'll post whatever findings I have and hopefully we'll be able to find a solution with the help of BEA engineers.
    In my case, I have a stand-alone Tomcat server that runs fine for about 1-2 days, and then the JVM suddenly starts using more CPU, and as a result, the server load shoots up (normal CPU utilization is ~5% but eventually goes up to ~95%; load goes from 0.1 to 4+).
    What I have found so far is that this corresponds to increased GC activity.
    Let me list my environment specs before I proceed, though:
    CPU: Dual Xeon 3.06GHz
    RAM: 2GB
    OS: RHEL4.4 (2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp)
    JVM build 1.5.0_03-b07 (BEA JRockit(R) (build dra-45238-20050523-2008-linux-ia32, R25.2.0-28))

    So, I'm running with the default GC strategy which lets the GC pick the most suitable approach (single space or generational). It seems to switch to generational almost immediately and runs well - most GC runs are in the nursery, and only once in a while it goes through the older space.
    Now, if you look at [Sun Oct 22 02:50:27 2006], that's when everything changes. GC starts running every second (later on it's running 3 times a second) doing huge sweeps. It never goes through the nursery again, although the strategy is still generational.
    It's all downhill from this point on, and it's a matter of hours (maybe a day) before we restart the server.
    I guess my only question is: What would cause such GC behavior?

  • IncompatibleClassChangeError. Caused by garbage collection?

    The problem occurs on JDK 1.3.1-b24 compiled in JBuilder Windows and
    running on Sun Solaris with identical JDK version.
    The application is a relatively complex RMI server.
    An error recovery function in the server runs in a Thread every two
    minutes. Most of the time it has nothing to do and ends without
    incident.
    Occasionally conditions require recovery that may not be successful
    for many attempts.
    Part of the recovery is a simple debug display of parameters involved
    in the recovery. There will be multiple displays during a single
    recovery cycle.
    In a recent example of problem, the recovery executed every two
    minutes for over two hours with the debug display working
    successfully.
    Suddenly one display works successfully and 5 milliseconds later the
    same display fails with a IncompatibleClassChangeError.
    The last part of the stack trace is:

    restarted. This suggests to me that something in the JVM, maybe garbage collection, has either corrupted the in-memory copy of the class or some internal table used by the JVM has become corrupted.
    Anybody else have ideas?

    Problem: The IncompatiableClassChangeError is a Symbolic resolution problem. In lamen's terms a package,class,method,or a variable name is corrupted.
    Possible problem location: Are you using a Custom ClassLoader? Do you Load and compile on the fly?

    I would look hard at the following methods in your MAP Interface:

    public Object remove(Object key);Is it possible that your MAP interface is corrupting your ArrayList using one of the above methods? Then, when you are building the strings using the AbstractMap's.toString() method, you are getting the IncompatiableClassChangeError?

    Some map implementations have restrictions on the keys and values they may contain. For example, some implementations prohibit null keys and values, and some have restrictions on the types of their keys.
    This puzzles me

    What's this, they state above that you should get a unchecked Exception, but the first sentence below makes me assume they are pulling a query on an ineligible key or value???
    Attempting to query the presence of an ineligible key or value may throw an exception, or it may simply return false; some implementations will exhibit the former behavior and some will exhibit the latter.
    Oh,OK. They are basically saying it totally depends on how you implement this Interface <grin>
    More generally, attempting an operation on an ineligible key or value whose completion would not result in the insertion of an ineligible element into the map may throw an exception or it may succeed, at the option of the implementation.
    The "optional" they are talking about are the methods that I listed above.
    Such exceptions are marked as "optional" in the specification for this interface.

  • URL class is not being garbage collected

    I have created two instances of the URL class to specify a file location for each image. I use com.symantec.itools.javax.swing.icons.ImageIcon class to display images specified by each URL instance as icons inside a button. The setImageLocation method(URL location) of the ImageIcon class sets the location to be displayed by this icon. The following is the code snippets used to create the ImageIcon instances:

    I am using JProbe 5.0.1 Memory to determine the loitering objects when I remove the button from the JInternalFrame. I am using Java 1.2.2_08 version. The JProbe Memory Leak Doctor indicates that each URL instance has a reference to an entry in a HashMap table. The reference graph from the root set has a reference to SoftCache to HashMap to HashMap$Entry. To make this URL instance eligible for garbage collection, JProbe Memory Leak Doctor indicates I must remove the entry from the HashMap. How do I get access to this HashMap to remove the entry? If this is a problem with the version of the JDK, please let me know. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

    are you certain that the java.net.URL's in that

    out of curiosity - are you certain that the URL's are
    the/a problem (are you getting an OutOfMemoryError?)
    asjfThe button that contains the URL's is the only one on the JInternalFrame. The JProbe Memory Debugger displays the java.net package name, the URL class name, the count (2), and the Count Change (+2). When I remove the button from the JInternalFrame, the aforementioned numbers on the Instance Summary remain the same. The snapshot of the Java Heap reveals that the two instances of the URL class are still there. The Memory Leak Doctor shows the reference graph from the root set:

  • SystemManager and Garbage Collection

    Hi everyone, I have a question regarding the SystemManager and Garbage Collection. I have and application that loads in its assets via a swc created in Flash. In that swc I have different MovieClips that act as the different screens of my application each one being tied to its own custom class. For example one MovieClip is a login screen another is the main menu etc. These screens contain components, text fields and animations. The problem that I am having is when I move from one screen to the other the garbage collector is not cleaning up everything. There are still references to the MovieClips that have animations for example. So even though I remove the screen via removeChild and set the variable reference to that object to null it is not releasing the MovieClips. When I pull it up in the profiler it shows me that SystemManager is holding references to them. Also if I debug the applicaion and look inside the instance of the MovieClip I can see that the private property "listeners" has values, but I am not adding listeners. It appears that the SystemManager is adding listeners. Does anyone know how I can clear these listeners or force the SystemManager to release these items. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. I am fairly new to dealing with memory management and garbage collection in Flex. I am using Flash CS4 to create the swc and Flash Builder 4 Beta with the 3.4 framework and Flash Player 10 to create the app. If you need me to clarify any of this please let me know. Again any help or ideas on where to go from here would be great!

    This chain says that the focusManager is referencing UserMenu.  Is there a default button or focusable objects in UserMenu and references from UserMenu to the objects in question?
    BTW, the CS4 fl.managers.FocusManager and any fl.. classes are incompatible with Flex, so make sure you're not using them in your MovieClips.
