Garbage Mattes...RED Crosshairs???

I am trying to work on some garbage mattes and I am noticing a RED Crosshair when I am trying to adjust the clip. It's removing a giant chunk of the clip automatically when I simply click say Point 1 for example. I didnt even drag the marker yet and half the clip is gone. Even when I hold down the Apple key its still not allowing me to adjust the clip like I want to. Is some setting on that should be off?

When you use the garbage matte, each of the corners is represented by a tiny red cross on the canvas. These are probably the crosshairs you are talking about. In the "Filters" window you see Point 1, Point 2 etc.- and then to the right of each is a button with a cross. If you click that button, then the point will show up in the canvas as a red cross and you can move it. If you click in the canvas far from the red cross you've chosen, then you may get freaked out because it will make drastic changes on your matte. Try clicking on the "corners" buttons in the "Filters" window and you'll see the crosses highlighted one at a time. These are your matte edges or corners that you can drag to make whatever shape you need. Once you move them, even a little, you have to re-click the button to get them back. It took me a while to master moving the red crosses around, but once I figured it out - what a great thing the garbage matte is! I wish there was a 32 point garbage matte.
Also, to see the whole matte, you may need to shrink your window size in the canvas - do this by choosing 50% from the pulldown menu below the small oval button on the top left of your canvas.

  • Third party garbage matte for ppro cs5?

    Hi there!
I started using ppro cs5 some months ago, coming from fcp, because of the gamma issue in fcp, because of the fact that you can import Red's r3d's directly and because ppro and redcine x communicate nicely. To my amazement there's no decent way of handling a garbage matte, i.e. smoothing it or using edge feather. I'm not about to spend another large sum on after effects--if it communicates directly with ppro like redcine x I will, but I'm afraid it's a question of exporting and importing, which I really dislike--in other words: does anyone know about a third party plugin with a decent garbage matte for ppro cs5?
    Many thanks,
    Hans

The build in gargage is no good as you cannot feather it BUT...
....you can make your own garbage matte in the Titler. Make a filled bezier shape in pure white.
superimpose over you footage and add a blur to make it feather.
Add Track Matte Effect to footage and set this to the matte.
If you want an animated matte drop the garbage matte effect on a white color matte, add the blur and keyframe the points over time.

  • Garbage Mattes not letting me move points

I am trying to use a Garbage Matte at several points in a video, which worked fine the other day; I was able to add a garbage matte around a person using a 50-point matte plugin, which was nice and smooth. Trying to add another similar effect, it no longer works; the red + appears when I click the + in the filter menu, and I can move the red + around, but it does nothing. I can set all of the points but the effect is not applied and nothing is cut out.
This is not something to do with the external plugin; I have tried this with the built-in 8-point and 4-point Garbage mattes, but they have done the same thing. Why is the effect not working? What can I do to apply/activate the effect?
    I am using FCE 4.

    ADDITIONAL INFO:
It appears that all of my video filters are not functioning properly. I added the "Basic 3D" effect to a clip the other day, and now when I tried to modify the clip, the entire filter stopped functioning. The same happens to the 50-point matte I set up the other day. When I change them at all, they stop working!
My video filters in general seem to not work! Help!!!

  • Premiere Pro shuts down while edditing garbage matte

    Hi there,
I'm creating a movie in black and white, with only the person in color. Therefore I'm using a eight or sixteen point garbage matte. For some reason things don't work as the should do, since yesterday evening. I was doing exactly the same as I always did, but right now, when I move an anchor point, a message box pops up, saying: "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premier Pro to shutdown. We will attempt to save your current project." Even when I restart the computer, or Premiere, the same happens.
I'm running Premiere Pro 4.1 (latest update) on Windows Vista, with 2GB of memory. Do you guys know what's going on?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pim

I agree. Two GB of RAM is about what it takes to just run Vista. Memory is very cheap. I'd first run out and flesh out the MoBo with 4GB (32-bit), or more if you're on Vista-64. Fill that puppy up and try again.
    Good luck,

  • Thin white outline around garbage matte

    Hi All,
I have a problem with a garbage matte rendering with a thin white line around it.  Basically I've got 2 tracks of video.  The bottom track is green screen footage, but its not a very clean key and some of the center of the image is being keyed away. So I put a copy of the footage on track 2 and used an 8 point garbage matte to keep part of the image intact.  The garbage matte is keyframed throughout the clip.  For whatever reason the matte has a thin white line around it when the sequence is exported. I'm attaching a stillframe to illustrate the problem.  Anyone know why this is occuring?
    Thanks,
    Chris

I see no thin white line in that still image. Where am I supposed to be looking?
Wait, okay, you could have been morespecific what to look for or that we really needed to boost the magnification.
ONly visible when exported? Not visible in the timeline at the serquence settings?
As suggested, a feather will blend the two layers a bit better but you might end up with a feathered thin white line, too.
More specifics, what's the source footage format? What the sequence setting? What's the export format?

  • Problem with garbage Matte 8-point

I filmed a video in one go and did not touch the camera at all. I split the clip and then put one on top of the other to use the eight-point garbage matte effect. The problem is the two clips don't match. There's a small difference in colour and it doesn't look like the two clips are aligned with each other.

Help is very much appreciated. Thank you.

I have been putting a feature request for that for many cycles now.
But our prayers have been answered.

  • Adobe premiere CC multicamera and garbage matt

    Hello,
I have video streams from 7 cameras that I have synchronised with the multi camera option in Adobe CC (2014). I then have a graphical overlay with 7 different places (representative of different mirrors of a vehicle), I know that I then have to use the garbage matt to put the different feeds in these places for the mirrors, but how do I unpack my multi cam stream whilst keeping videos synchronised?
Any help on this would be great, I am new to this program.
    Thanks in advance,
    Victoria.

you can open up the multicam sequence to edit those clips, or perhaps just copy some trimmed clips out to the master sequence.
have to right click and choose open in timeline, double click doesn't work. this gets you access to all your clips/tracks inside your multicam sequence.

  • Cannot set points in Garbage Matte

I am trying to use the garbage matte effect and this is my problem.  No matter which I apply (4,8 or 16 point), I cannot figure out how to access the set points.  The initial matte appears on the clip, and I can adjust the matte using the x and y axis (numerically), but I cannot grab and set the points of the matte on the clip itself in the control window.  All I can do is seletc one of the four corners and move the entire clip around.  Can you provide some insight into what I might try to get this to work?  Thanks.

I have found that the visualization of the garbage matte bounding box points is not version specific.
The matter goes to having your Timeline video selected and the Garbage Matte Panel selected in Properties Panel (in your case)....however, the following is an example from Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 on Windows 7 64 bit
Timeline Video Selected, but 16-Point Garbage Matte in Properties Palatte not...; consequently, no points seen to adjust.
Timeline Video Selected and 16-Point Garbage Matte Panel selected/highlighted in Properties Palette
Happens to me all the time, no matter what version. So, it has made a lasting impression.

  • CS3: Garbage Matte is moved after exporting movie?

I hope someone can help me with this problem i'm having in Premiere Pro CS3:
With the 4/8/16 point garbage matte tool i have made a composition of different video-objects. When i export the movie some of these objects are being misplaced from their original position.
What can be the cause of this problem? I have tried exporting the sequence in different ways/qualities but this doesn't seem to help.
    Thanks in advance!

If the garbage matte give you trouble use the titler and draw
your matte with the pentool and use it as a track matte.
There is one advantage to this methode, you can feather the
matte by adding a Fast Blur.

  • Export 8-point Garbage Matte.

I have been using 7toX to transfer old projects in to FCP X recently, and have discovered that the 8-point Garbage Matte effect is no longer included.
That being said, the effect obviously didn't transfer over with the clip.
How can I export only the clip with the matte effect from FCP 7, and import into FCP X, and still retain "transparency"?
    It's a simple project.
Clip on V1, and second clip on V2 with the 8-point matte applied, revealing V1 below.
I have soloed the V2 clip and set In and Out and exported to ProRes 422 quicktime and imported into FCP X, but the background is simply black, and does not retain the transparency.
I am familiar with this process in Photoshop, by starting with a transparent background, but do not know the worflow with FCP.
    Thank you for your help.

Hey, thanks a lot! Did the trick. You learn something new everyday..
Just to clarify, for future reference:
Soloed the clip with matte effect, exported to prores4444 with "millions of colors +", dropped in to FCP X and matte/alpha were intact!

  • Turning off the keyframe numbers on an 8 point Garbage Mattes?

I'm trying to turn off the key frame numbers on the 8 point Garbage Matte because they cover up parts of the paths/outlines I am trying to create...
Can they be removed or at least moved or shrunk?

Keyframes don't have numbers. Are you referring to the point labels? If so, in the Filter tab of the Viewer window, check the box "Hide Labels."

  • Export Error with Garbage Mattes

    Hey Everybody!
I've been having an issue with exporting one of my films using FCP.
I had to use a four point garbage matte to block out some unwanted background lights and create a black void around my actors.
It looks great in the FCP viewer (as you can see in the first image), but when I export it to .mov, .mp4, and .avi, the matte stands out. It doesn't blend in to the other black color from the raw video footage (as you may be able to see around the woman in the second image. Zoom in closely and notice the video grain in the black surrounding her).
Is there anything I can do to make sure the video file that's exported is an exact replica of what I see in my FCP viewer?
    Thanks!
    -Will

Your image that came from the camera has noise in it. Probably caused by a combination of low lighting levels and camera exposure settings
The area covered by the Garbage matte is pure, digital black.
Add a noise reduction filter to the camera image (this will make it slightly softer).
Or... add noise enhancement to the digital black to balance out with the camera footage.

  • Keylight pre-comp not respecting garbage mattes?

    Hi all!
I'm using a keying method I saw on an old tutorial from Aaron Rabinowitz and Andrew Kramer. With it, you use many copies of the Color Key effect to get a noisy rough key. Then use Simple Matte with a negative value to get a tight green halo around your subject.
Then you use your high-end keyer (like Keylight) to only key the halo out. It gives better results than trying to build multiple keys to get rid of dark areas or uneven lighting in the entire scene.
In this example, I've drawn a couple garbage mattes to get rid of large sections of the scene. I then do the Color Key and Simple Matte trick. Then all that is precomped. In my new comp, the only effect is Keylight. However, when I switch over to Screen Matte view, I still see the objects I masked out.
Theoretically, those objects shouldn't even exist in the render pipeline if they are removed in a precomp, right? Any idea what's going on?

I'm still having the same confusion. Maybe this image will help.
If I pre-rendered the precomp with the super tight green border, there's no way Keylight would ever see source footage, so why does it here?

  • Garbage Matte Layer Mask?

Somebody just helped me in doing a chroma key on lab mode playing with a and b values (I got all that) and at the end he added "if necessary add a garbage matte layer mask" I have no idea what he meant, tried to find out thru all the icons but nothing has that name .... can somebody help me out how to do that?
I am not an expert on photoshop but can follow steps and figure things out quick. Thanks for your help

    O E,
That person was stretching the term Garbage Matte a bit. As Mike says, borrowed from film/video. The purpose is the same - to mask out unwanted image area from the subject.
Again, as Mike points out, a Layer Mask is attached to its Layer and does the same thing, though with much more accuracy that a normal "Garbage Matte" in any NLE application. I doubt that you'll find Garbage Matte in any PS Help file, the manual, or probably any book on PS, unless maybe it'd be in PS CS3 Extended, as it does more video work.
After Layers, and just a little ahead of Adjustment Layers (IMO), Layer Masks are the most powerful tool in PS. How did I ever live without them back in the Dark Ages?

  • Residual hard edges with garbage mattes (v. 5  to 6)

    Hello,
Thanks in advance! (I've searched for the answer and found nothing.)
I have a short film, edited in FCP 5, and I've used garbage mattes all over it. I brought it to a production house in order to create some Digibeta exhibition copies, and when exporting (they are using FCP 6), I noticed the garbage mattes (both 8-point and 4-point) had hard edges on them (although they are all feathered edges in the file). I am very experienced with mattes, and have used them extensively, but have never come across this before. I can't see any of these hard edges on my home system, although I use a large monitor. They also do not show up on the burned dvds I've made, nor when I projected them on to a 9 foot screen recently.
Is there something happening in the conversion from 5 to 6 that could be causing this? The frustrating thing is that I am trying to fix something I cannot actually see at home (and working on it at the production house is ludicrously expensive.) Could it be something they are doing? I need to resolve this soon, as the film is having a premiere in 3 weeks and the festival needs the digibeta!
Please help, and thank you again so much for your time!
    Greg

Something similar is happening with me. I'm using soft edge mattes and dissolving between them on V2. During the dissolve, you can see the edge, even though the edge is masked and feathered on the shot. There are no key frames added. This happens more frequently when I have repositioned the shot. I've tried to re-render all the dissolves and the same thing keeps happening.
