Garbage Text Appearing in Address Book

When I try to create a new contact and type in the name any key I press results in "dfgdfgdfgdfgdfgdfg" appearing and I am also unable to edit notes for contacts in address book.
Anyone else have this problem or can suggest how to resolve it?
Regards,
Kerry

I have this same problem; I've created a new user account and the Apple Address Book works fine in that account, so the problem is with my original user settings somewhere. I've deleted the ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook folder with no effect. I've emptied/deleted all info in the Address Book and synced the data down from .mac with no change. I've reinstalled Leopard and updated all the system software. Also deleted the Address Book application and reinstalled it from Optional Installs on the Leopard Installation DVD.
Is there some way to do a complete deletion of Address Book and all its related preferences so a clean install can be performed?

  • Strange issue, garbage text appearing curve 8520

    Hi All,
Strange problem, when using only the facebook app thing, and also on the facebook website, but not any others..
When I type a word, text appears fine, but as soon as I press 'i' and then space, a load of junk text appears, to be specific:
    ItrrtiTjffhdgfwfWtETeeeTyl11/14/2010Uu
Any idea at all what this is???

so anytime you press "i", all that garbage text appears?
Check your Options > AutoText and see if you have some odd entry for the letter "i".

  • Synchronized Contacts do not appear in Address Book

    Hello,
I have OS 10.6.6, iSync 3.1, Address Book 5.0.3 and a NOKIA 6500c Phone. I successfully installed the plugin for the Nokia (at least it seems like it, the phone is recognized).
I have like 6 contact in Address Book and like 150 on Phone. When I do the "first time" sync I chose "merge" phone and computer. When doing the sync, on the phone display a status bar appears and it says x/150 synchronized, as should be, and within a few seconds its done. But the contacts do not appear in Address Book. I've tried this a few times after resetting the syncing settings and everytime I do the first time sync, it appears to work, but nothing appears in Address Book.
Funny is: If I change the phone number of one of the existing 6 entries, that I have in my AddressBook on computer, on the phone, the change is synchronized to the computer. But no new entries are entered on the computer.
    What am I missing?
    Thank you!

There should be an option within the phones menus somewhere.
I think its something like choose Edit on a contact and change the *Store to* option to phone
Or, it may be something like this:

    The phone's manual may help.

  • Importing text file to address book?

I created a text tab-delimited file for import. From within Address Book, ran "Import". Matched up field names. All looked good. When I clicked on "OK" basically very little happened. After a few seconds the blue OK button became clear but nothing else. I advanced another record, clicked OK on it and same few seconds then nothing. I expected all the records to be imported.
In any case, tried this individually with a few records, then checked the Address Book and none of the info was in there.
Is this some kind of bug? I don't see that I did anything that was wrong with the import.
    Advice appreciated.
    Richard

Not sure if this helps, but ...
I made a quick text file to see if I could duplicate your problem. I put in three lines, the first with field names (First, Last, Work) and the other two with corresponding data. The values within each line were tab separated. When I ran AB's import I had to match up the third field to correspond with email (work). I flicked through the displayed records (all two of them!!) and they displayed as contact cards. I then clicked OK, and unlike your description, the import dialogue immediately vanished. The records were correctly imported.
When you look at the records in the import dialog do they all display correctly?
Could it be a 10.4.3 issue?
After attempting to do the import, has your contact count gone up?
What happens if you select the "last import" group?

  • Transfered contacts not appearing in address book.

Verizon Wireless transfered the contacts from my old phone to my new BB8330.  The contacts are not appearing in the business or personal folder.  Previous numbers I had dialed that were in my old contacts now have the contact name attached and when I receive a call from a contact the contact name and number appears!  The same thing is true with voice activated dialing,  contact names will appear that I cannot find in the address book.  It seems that the contacts transfered but I cannot find them.  I read in the technical forum that the contacts could be in the sim card, but I don't believe my phone has a sim card.  Help!

    Welcme to the Frums!
Go to your address book - PRESS MENU KEY - FILTER and uncheck any boxes that are checked -

  • Help with parsing a text string in address book and moving it to 'related person' field

I am wanting to make a little applescript that will go thru my contacts and find data in the NOTES field and parse it slightly and move it to another field.  (sorry if parsing isn't the right word here)
The data to be found is a GPS coordinate with this EXACT format:
    <Lat:12.345678><Lon:-12.345678>
...the only thing different from this example is the digits, and the number of digits.
What I want to end up doing is deleting this data from the NOTES field, but leaving any other data, (this part sounds difficult to do to, to me!)
And moving it to a related person field with the label gps, and the coordinate now reading exactly:
    12.345678,-12.345678
(FYI, you can copy/paste a coordinate like this very fast into the maps app on iPhone and locate it instantly)
Thanks for the help on this
If this is too complicated I can break up the process into steps.  I know how to do some of it, but not sure about the parsing, and then delete just part of the notes field...
    Thanks!

    Hi,
This script work here, try it :
    tell application "Address Book"
repeat with thisContact in (get people)
set tNote to note of thisContact
if tNote is not missing value and "<Lat:" is in tNote and "<Lon:" is in tNote then
                set {GPS_value, newNote} to my getGPS_coordinate(tNote)
if newNote is not "" then -- no error
set gpsField to (related names of thisContact whose its label = "gps")
if gpsField is not {} then
set value of (item 1 of gpsField) to GPS_value
else -- field "gps" is empty
                        make new related name at end of related names of thisContact with properties {label:"gps", value:GPS_value}
                    end if
set note of thisContact to newNote

set text item delimiters to "<Lon:"
set tLon to text item 2 of this_note
set text item delimiters to ">"
set {tLat, tLon} to {text item 1 of tLat, text item 1 of tLon} -- get values (lat... and long...)
            set text item delimiters to "<Lat:" & tLat & "><Lon:" & tLon & ">"
set this_note to text items of this_note
set text item delimiters to " "

        end try

  • Can't import the address part of a text file into Address Book

I am trying to import from a text file. It simply will not let me hit OK if I try to import the address information but works fine if I omit the address.
    Any ideas? Getting very frustrated.
    Schmleff

I exported my database in a tab delimited format from palm desktop on a windows machine.
I clicked import from the address book menu, selected "from text file". It opens the import window as you would expect it to. I begin to align the data with the proper fields. If I ignore all address information, it imports just fine, but obviously with no addresses. If I try to align any address information at all, it will not let me click ok. the button clicks, but does nothing. If I unselect the address info again, its imports. No directions are available to guide me and everything looks like it should work. Begining to feel like Im in windoze world again.

  • How to highlight & copy text from Lightning address book, versus having to open the entry?

That I can tell, it isn't possible to highlight & copy text visible in the Contact Pane or the pane above it, the one with all the address book entries. Am I missing a way to do this?
It would sure make the use of the address book in Lightning a lot more convenient & quicker to use if one could do so. Please note I did not say edit. Instead, one is required to go through all the same steps as if editing. That is, open Properties & select the appropriate tab, then highlight & copy said information, instead of just being able to quickly copy the desired text.
It's only two more clicks, & the finding of the text, which can be cumbersome in some of the small field windows, especially for notes, but when doing this often, it sure becomes a pain. Notes in particular becomes a mini database for that address entry, whether it be your personal record for product information for something purchased (which could be extensive if many of the parts of something like a specific computer were noted), to sharing contact information with others.
A third use is when having to retrieve security information that is impossible to remember, such as your BTC account(s). By keeping it in the address book on an at-home computer, adds a bit more security, yet you can still easily access it.

The add on More Functions for Address Book allows several copy functions.

  • Junk email addresses appearing in address book

For some reason I have tons of junk email addresses appearing in my Mail address -- I have no idea how they got there. Here are just two examples, there are hundreds:
    Alexis Eldridge
    [email protected]
    or
    Gallo Poole
    [email protected]
Does anyone know why this is happening and how to prevent it? Thanks!

Well, yes, maybe. I'm a little paranoid -- I download in the regular user account, scan with clamxav, drop the scanned download into the admin dropbox, fast-user-switch to the admin account, move the download to an "installers" folder that I maintain, and install from the admin account. Log out and back in to the standard account. I guess, yeah, if you are doing forty separate software updates and upgrades every day, a process like mine is a little problematic. On the other hand, the Applications folder isn't writeable from a standard user account without authenticating as an administratively privileged user and I just don't do that.
Actually, that may not quite be true. Although I don't operate that way, you could probably install from the standard user account by authenticating the installer as an admin user from within the standard user account. That kind of defeats the purpose, anyways, if the standard user account has been compromised by a hidden applescript keystroke logger or something, if such thing were to exist.
Having a separate administrator and standard user account are a trade-off that you have to decide upon: are the added safety and security practices worth a loss of user experience convenience? Once you figure out, if you are able to figure out, how your Address Book started getting loaded up with rogue email addresses, you might be better able to make that determination for your own situation. Page 33 of the snow leopard security guide (http://images.apple.com/support/security/guides/docs/SnowLeopardSecurity_Configv10.6.pdf) recommends having separate administrator and daily use accounts. But, in the end, that's your call. The guide tells you how to lock your computer down so tightly that it's almost worthless.
With regards to anti-malware, your best bet is to see what respected sites like macworld and others have to say, and just do some google searches. I'm in no position to make a recommendation. With clamxav, which is what I use, the price is right but I can't say how proactive a freeware/donationware anti-malware entity might be when that new occasional Mac malware comes out.
While I have suggested you performing an anti-MacMalware scan, that may or may not resolve your issue, and offer up some thoughts on future operating practices that really don't help you now, I can only wish you good luck on solving your AddressBook problem. Please post back when you do, I'm sure everyone here would like to be made aware of what and how it happened, and what they can do to do to prevent it.

  • How can I export to a text file from address book?

I started a group in Address Book for a project. Now it is the most complete database of folks involved. I want to send it to some folks who live in the PC world.
Exporting as a VCF or address book archive just doesn't do it.
    Any and all suggestions welcome.

The feature to export SWF files directly from After Effects has been removed. It never worked at all well.
To create SWF files, use Flash Professional.
If you want to play a movie that you've created in After Effects in a SWF container, then export your composition using Adobe Media Encoder in H.264 format and then link or embed that movie into a SWF file in Flash Professional.

  • Change text size in Address Book.app?

I have an increasing number of Chinese addresses. My eyes would love it if I could make the font size on those cards (or all the cards if necessary) a little bigger so that I could read the hanzi characters better. In every other Apple app, you can Command-plus to view things bigger, but not Address Book.
    Thanks!
    Heidi

An alternative could be to zoom in on the screen. From this [page|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75459] are the following shortcuts:
    Keyboard shortcut Description
    Option-Command-8 Turn on Zoom
    Option-Command-+ (plus) Zoom in
    Option-Command-- (minus) Zoom out
If I find a way to alter the font size I'll let you know

  • Add new text field in Address Book?

I can export my address book using the Address Book Exporter Utility.
However, instead of creating a label with First Last (e.g., Bob Dylan) as stored in Address Book, I would like to use a custom field, Mr. First Last & Family (Bob and Joan Dylan). I know I can make those edits in Excel after the export and send off to my mailing house, but then it isn't saved in Address book.
If I create a custom field (say "Envelope Label") under Related Names, it doesn't export with that utility. Any ideas?

    Hai Ramesh ,
Could u please ellobrate the requirement , you need new field to be added  in the screen level .

  • Touch Contact Changes Don't Appear in Address Book?

If I make changes to my contact details on my Touch when I sync they are not reflected back into my Address Book?
I do get prompted to continue with changes/deletions etc but nothing is affected ion my touch or in Address Book?
    Why not?

I have the same problem. It seems that my contacts were first copied to the touch changes made on either computer or iPod don't sync even though it goes thru the process. It almost seems like iTunes is working from a different address book database.
    I've fully restored the iPod,
deleted preference files for Address Book & iTunes,
    deleted cache files,
backed up my contacts & erased them from Address Book and the restored them again,
I even used the guest account on my mac to link to iTunes and wipe the iPod. That worked with the contacts in that account but when I returned to my account and re-linked to iTunes, essentially starting fresh, the contacts restored to the initial sync.
If anyone has any ideas please share them.
    Thanks.
