Garbaged text when unzipping archives with japanese names

Everytime I unzip files containing Japanese text using stuffit expander, it always come out as garbaged text. Is there any way to make it unzip into normal Japanese? Help much appreciated.

One of my co-workers using Mac OS 9 can see all of the files just fine, but another co-worker running Mac OS 10.5.5 like me - is having issues as well.
That would probably indicate that these files are using a legacy Japanese encoding instead of Unicode. You may need to create copies of them converted to Unicode to use them on OS X, or do all your work in the non-Unicode OS 9 with apps designed for that.
If you know Japanese well, perhaps someone in the Japanese forums could help:

  • Problem downloading files with japanese names

I'm having trouble with Safari and a group-ware used in our company.
The group-ware is Cybozu, made in Japan, and now it is in version 6.
Officially, the only supported browser is MS Internet Explorer versions
5 and above (should be there something like that? I though it was
supposed to support ANY browser since that's the MAJOR selling point
for browser-based group-ware solutions...). And more: it seems that
    support for Macintosh is non-existent.
Since the Panther upgrade, me and my colleagues can't download files
whose names are in japanese and that are stored in or sent to us by the
group-ware . We are working in a telecommunications company (here in
Japan), but our team focuses on media and advertising, and so are the
only ones having Macs (in an almost exclusively Windows environment).
To add to the complexity, our target market is brazilians who live in Japan
(trust me, there's a lot of them!). So our Macs have to deal also with
the accentuated characters of the Brazilian Portuguese language, english
    AND japanese.
In a way, the Mac is the ONLY successful solution to such an environment.
Since administrative and other mundane tasks don't require dealing with
multilingual files, the vast majority of the employees use Windows (nothing
new there, eh?). The problem only starts to affect us when we request help
to the System Administrators. I called on them about this problem but it
seems that we are deep under in the priorities list.
So I present the problem here:
    -When clicking in the link:
•With Firefox, Netscape and Explorer, there is no problem.
•With Safari, I am sent to the login window of the group-ware.
-I figured out that the problem is with the way the URLs are presented.
Let's say that the file I want to download is <a href="http://www.geocities.jp/claytonshima/Imagem1.gif>this</a>.
    • <a href="http://www.geocities.jp/claytonshima/Imagem2.gif>Here's a sample of a good URL (in Firefox, Netscape and Explorer).
    • http://www.geocities.jp/claytonshima/Imagem3.gif>And this is the URL in Safari.
So it seems that the problem is the way that Safari handles the japanese
    characters in the URL.
    Any insights on this?
    Thanks in advance!
    Clayton Shima
PS: Edited and included the link to the images because I couldn't figure out how to write in japanese here in these discussion boards.....

    Hi, thanks for the reply.
The problems occurs when I click on the link AND when I copy/paste the URL.
In fact, I realized that something wrong was happening to the way Safari
handles the urls after I copied and pasted.
We are using Tiger, but the problem started to appear when we upgraded to
Panther. In Jaguar there were no problems - or is it the other way around?
I can't remember, but put the older in this place and I guess you can figure it
    out, sorry!
Doing what you suggested (turning text encoding to UTF-8) solves the
problem of downloading, but when turning the encoding, all the text in the
page gets weird and unreadable. Even so, clicking in the link downloads the
file, but the file gets saved with its name all messed (the file name extension
are OK though, the same as files which file names include roman alphabet
letters preserve the integrity of such letters). This can be a temporary
workaround, but to rename each downloaded file can get quite painful if
    downloading lots of files!
I have already tried changing the system language between the three ones
we most use (english, japanese and brazilian portuguese), with and without
system restart, in all the possible text encoding combinations, with no avail.
Is there the possibility that this is a Safri bug? Since the links to the files are
generated by the server running the groupware, is it possible that the
group-ware is the culprit? One could think that URL formatting is a pretty
    standard thing....

  • Garbage text when viewing reports

    Post Author: icecroft
    CA Forum: General
    Hello everyone!
Is there anyone here who has encountered this error? When running any Crystal Report, our client gets garbage text as a report output. The weird thing is, when this report is exported to PDF, the output is perfectly fine. They are currently running on Windows XP and uses Crystal Report 10.
If it helps, here's a screenshot of the report with garbage text:
I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me with this.
    Thanks a lot!!!

The basic flow is this, for the situation in which I'm seeing this issue.
This is a desktop application using an Access database as its data store, with a button that allows the user to view a Crystal Report containing all of the data that's in the screen.
When the user clicks on the button to view the report, the application does the following:
    - Builds up a DataRow containing all of the data representing the current 'item' being viewed in the application
    - Inserts the row into the Access database using the DataSet / TableAdapter (creates a new database connection each time)
    - Creates a new instance of the Crystal Report class to be viewed
    - set the database connection info in the report to the access database being used by the application
    - create a new form containing a CrystalReportViewer control
    - set the ReportSource of the control to the instance of the Crystal Report created above
    - show the form / CrystalReportViewer control.

  • Issue with XML post when port used with server name

    Hi Guys,
We are currently using an agent on our application servers which puts a server in "inservice standby" if the CPU load on the system goes above 75%. This agent is using an XML post on the CSM to achieve this and put the server back inservice using XML post as well.
Currently we are trying to use the same agent for another application which has a port number defined as well and it does not seem to work.
To give an example where it works:
    serverfarm TEST
    nat server
    nat client TEST
    real name BLABLA
    inservice
The example where it does not work:
    serverfarm TEST
    nat server
    nat client TEST
    real name BLABLA 50000
When we get the server name via XML we see that CSM returns the name as BLABLA: 50000 however using the same in the script does not work.
Would someone know how to put the port number in an XML script so that the CSM understands which server need to be changed.
    Thanks,
    Murtaza

It would be some thing in line with the following example
    <?xml version="1.0" ?>
The DTD for CSM XML will let you know what tags and attributes are available to use:

  • Save as "web page, complete" .html file disappears when overwriting file with same name

On Mac and PC using various versions of FireFox (including 29.0.1 on Win 7) the following occurs:
"Save Page As" a page with several iFrames in the content. I use "Web page, complete" and name the file.
Close FireFox. The .html file and accompanying folder are saved correctly. Then I open the file in FireFox and make some changes to fields in a form. Then "Save Page As" again and use the same name. It prompts to overwrite the existing file and I click Yes.
Three out of four times the file is no longer there. The folder remains but the .html file is gone. Not in the trash or hidden, just gone.
I know this sounds crazy but I have tested it on about 20 computers (both mac and various windows versions), all with different FF versions and different antivirus. The above scenario happens: always on 1 computer, occasionally (random) on 3, and hasn't been observed yet on the others.
Has anyone encountered this before? Are there any antivirus or malware products that could cause this? Any settings in FF that could? Any thing about this page or frames that could cause it?

I found the solution. Yes, the first time you replace a file it disappears altogether. Just save it again, and it will reappear with the updated date and time code in the directory you chose to save it in. I only wish this were the problem in Firefox v. 30, but that is worse now.

  • Want to save Individual clips with separate names

Moving from Final cut over to Imovie. In Final Cut could save any clip with a separate name. Other than copying a clip over to a new project and rendering a move, I could not find how to do that in imovie, or in the tutorials/manual. I have spent a good deal of time bringing the HD movies over to Imovie and selecting out the clips to make a new movie. These clips must now be archived with individual names.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Thanks in advance!

Probably collecting everything on an artboard into a new layer might give you the option to use a script to save layers to files.
But this is a feature request but no as of yet has suggested a way that this might work, at least I do not think so.

When I create a text message from my contact on my iphone 5, the contacts mobile number appears and not there name.  But when they respond to my text, is shows up as a new text message with there name.  How do I fix this?

Double click the home button and swipe up the messages app to stop it, then open the app again. This pretty much completely stops the process and freshly opens it again, resolving problems at times. I have had this happen before as well on my iPad, I get a banner, check messages, and nothing new is there.
If that doesn't work, close the app like suggested above, but then restart the phone by holding down the home and lock button for 10-15 seconds until the apple logo appears.

  • I am using the big date calendar template and when I submit it to apple for printing I lose the name of two months. These names are not text boxes. I see the names when I send it in but something happens during the transmission to apple. It was suggested

I am using the big date calendar template in iPhoto. I am on Lion 10.7.2, macbook air. The names of the months are on each calendar page but something happens when I send the data to Apple. The names are part of the template. They are not text boxes. I lose two names on the calendar after it is sent to Apple. Apple suggested I make a pdf file of my calendar before sending it in and check to make sure every name shows. I did this with a calendar I just sent in. The calendar was correct. All names of the months were showing. After sending the data two month names disappeard because when it arrived by mail, it was incorrect. Apple looked at my calendar via a pdf file and it was incorrect.  This is second time this has happened. I called Apple and they had me delete several folders in the Library folder, some preferences and do a complete reinstall of iPhoto.  I have not yet remade the defective calendar. I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem?
    kathy

Control-click on the background of the view all pages window and select "Preview Calendar" from the contextual menu.
You can also save the pdf as a file to compare to the printed calendar.  If the two names are visible in the pdf file then the printed copy should show them.  Contact Apple for a refund.  Apple Print Products - Apple Store (U.S.)

I would also recommend to write the description into the meta data. This would allow to place a text frame above the image and it is possible to add meta information and file name automatically together with the image, when you place it or even in a prepared template.
Meta data information can be written easily in Bridge in the Meta File Workspace.

  • UnZipping an archive with folders inside

    Hello, everyone.
A friend of mine asked me to create him an "auto-downloader" type of program, to download a ZIP archive, then extract the information to the user's computer (no, it is not harmful).
Anyways, I've been trying mutliple ways, and I've come pretty far with the one I'm currently using. The only problem is, I'm using user.home as the file location for the zip, and creating a folder in there seems to just not want to work. This is the only way I could think of doing it, but I'm sure there are easier ways.. here's what I'm using:
    import java.awt.BorderLayout;
    import java.awt.Dimension;
    import java.io.BufferedInputStream;
    import java.io.File;

I'm trying to extract a ZIP archive with folders, every time I do, it stops halfway through and throws an error similar to this:
    invalid cache index specified
    ..\animations\raw
java.io.FileNotFoundException: ..\animations\raw (The system cannot find the pat
    h specified)

            at Updater.get(Updater.java:64)
            at Client.main(Client.java:2548)
Press any key to continue . . .I'm just trying to be able to extract cache (ZIP ARCHIVE) which has folders inside. I've tried creating a directory for the folder, but it seems to not work, hence the "?" in the above error (i printed that if the directory failed to create a new directory, as seen in my above code). Once again, sorry if this isn't as understandable as it should be, I'm not myself without sleep :)
Also, do ignore the first print, 'invalid cache index specified', it's not related to the problem.

So your question is really about how to make a directory, then. Nothing at all to do with unzipping of archives.
If you can't create a directory, then perhaps there is some permissions problem. You don't have the authority to create directories in some directory. Or perhaps you're trying to use a name which isn't a valid directory name in your system. Or... there are many other possibilities. But anyway I recommend tossing all of that unzipping business out of your program and just trying to write something which creates a directory. Debug that first.

  • [JS CS3] Frontmost document/selection when other with same name?

I have a few scripts used to perform various operations on the current selection in InDesign. Under normal circumstances these work fine, but I can't seem to reliably get the frontmost document/selection when there is another document open with the same name. Most references to the document and every reference to the selection I have tried so far will simply lead to the document which was most recently opened (and has the same name).
app.activeDocument.fullName always return the path to the most recently opened document of the same name, but app.documents[0].fullName will return the correct path. Trying to get the selection though will always return the selection of the most recently opened document of the same name, regardless of whether I try app.selection, app.activeDocument.selection or app.documents[0].selection. I have also tried with getElements()[0] appended to the document reference but it makes no difference.
My primary environment is still CS3 and the problem appears to be that it only references documents by name. Brief testing with CS5 indicates this has been solved by Adobe, presumably because it now refers to documents using an id by default. Haven't tried CS4 but since its document object does not have an id property I'd assume it will behave the same as CS3. Is there any way around this, or is the best I can do to detect the issue (a simple app.activeDocument != app.documents[0] comparison seems to work reliably) and refuse to run if encountered?

Welll...chances are the selected item will not be a valid ID in both documents of the same name. (I don't think ID's are globally unique, so that's not a guarantee -- but it's something you can check and only give an error if it happens to be that there is a collison).
So, get the transaction specifier of the selection:
    app.activeWindow.selection[0].toSpecifier()
    Result: /document[@name="u1.indd"]//text-frame[@id=211]
Then, iterate over app.documents to find the indexes of the documents with that name.
In my test, of course it is just zero and one.
Then, try to resolve the specifiers against those documents:
    resolve("/document[0]//text-frame[@id=211]")
    Result: [object TextFrame]
    resolve("/document[1]//text-frame[@id=211]")
    Error: Object is invalid
Since only doc 0 has a textFrame with id 211, you know it's doc 0 and you have a valid specifier.
I chose to adjust the specifier by hand, because I think that's probably the most general. The other choice would be to call app.documents[0].textFrames.itemByID(211), but then you would need to map "text-frame" to "textFrames" and that seems annoying and errorprone.

  • Garbage text prints when printing documents from InDesign

I am encountering an odd error when printing from InDesign 4.0.4 (CS2) to some HP printers (HP 4650 and 2430n). Some documents print just fine with no problems. But a couple of documents will either never print, or when they do print, they print a line or few of garbage text (black diamonds, smiley faces, etc.) per page, plus some blank pages, and it will run through tons of paper when it does this.
I've found the following document which describes my problem pretty closely.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument? docname=c00028613&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=regR1002USEN
The problem is that I have set the Graphics to print as ASCII, and this problem still occurs. Could it be a problem with a particular EPS file printing or something? This document (with all of the included text, EPS images, etc) become fairly sizeable, such as 150 MB in size. The HP 4650 has 512 MB of memory, whereas the HP 2430 has 64 MB of memory.
I printed this same problem document from another computer, with all of the same settings in InDesign, and it printed with no problems.
Any idea on what is going on here?

    Hello Chad,
Do you know if the two printers support PostScript? It sounds like they don't and therefore they will be using filters to convert the PS data from InDesign into a format that it understood by the printer. It will be in this conversion process that something will be going astray and that will cause the corrupted output. Try running a Repair Disk Permissions to see if this helps.
I don't believe the amount of RAM will cause the problem, it should only impact the speed at which the document can be spooled from the Mac. However, if the error is only occuring from InDesign and when working with large files, then it may have something to do with it. But if the other PC is okay then it may rule out the RAM. What print language is the other PC using to print to the HP's?

    Paul

    Try the following procedure:
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)
