  • [SOLVED] Garbled and Scratchy Audio

    Hey all -
I am having a pretty frustrating problem with my audio, and can't seem to find any fixes or locate any threads that duplicate my problem online.
Firstly, the audio is always scratchy.  If there is no audio being played, the speakers are silent.  But as soon as there is some sort of audio output, they start making a scratching noise.
Secondly, audio from embedded Flash videos (youtube, for instance) is horribly garbled.  It sounds like the audio is reverberating through an AC vent, being shifted in pitch, echoed, and then output.  Interestingly enough, this doesn't always happen.  After a fresh restart, it is fine for a bit before turning into a garbled mess again.
I have the Intel 82801I ICH9 HD Audio Controller, as shown by 'lspci':
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
and have the correct kernel modules loading:
    snd_hda_intel 357048 7
    snd_hwdep 8964 1 snd_hda_intel
    snd_pcm_oss 40192 0
    snd_pcm 69636 4 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm_oss
None of my ALSA settings are in the red, and the PCM setting is at about ~50%.
I know the issue isn't the speakers, since the machine is a dual-boot with Winblows, and they work fine there.
    Can anyone help?

try using OSS (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/OSS); it works fine with my Intel HDA audio chipset
if you want to try staying with alsa, try editing /etc/modprobe.conf and adding:
    options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo
you have to restart to make it take effect. there are several options you can try instead of lenovo, try the alsa page for Intel HDA

  • HP 15t Laptop - buzzing and stuttering audio

I ordered an HP 15t laptop through the HP website and I've had it for a little over a month.  Shortly after I started using it, like maybe a couple of weeks or so, I started having problems with my audio.  No matter what I'm doing, whether it's listening to music or watching a video, the sound will buzz or screech or be interrupted by bursts of static intermittently.  It's even happened with simple things like notification sounds.  It seems to do it more when I'm browsing the Internet, and does not change whether I'm using headphones or listening through my computer's speakers.
I've run troubleshooting on my audio and checked to make sure my audio drivers are updated; troubleshooting hasn't turned up any problems and my audio driver is up-to-date.   I have tried changing the sample rate on my speakers, which seemed to work for a few days but then afterward I started having the same problems.
I really would appreciate some help with this issue.  HP has been good to me in the past and I'd hate to think this company is starting to let me down now.

    Hi there @KGyork81
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that you are experiencing some audio, breaks, stutters, and screeches. I am happy to help you with this.
Pardon the pun, but from the sound of it...  and from your description, I think the issue is more about system latency. Probably a situation where several programs or processes are consuming system resources, resulting in a bit of lag, which the audio system is translating into the static and breaks that you are hearing. The cause could be due to too many applications running in the background, or even malicious software inadvertently install while roaming the internet.
Also, please post the full product number for your notebook. See the following, if you need help with that information.

  • Audio Buzzes and Screams

This started happening about 2 weeks ago.. perhaps after an update, but not sure.. I can be listening to internet radio or watching a video and the audio will "scream" with a weird electonic buzz, then it will cut in and out. It will also happen when I change between browser tabs (and not restricted to one browser.. it happens with opera and FF).
It is not limited to when I am "using" my laptop..if im just letting it play audio, it will happen.. I see this is an ongoing issue with these laptops... thanks HP....

  • HP Pavilion dv9218tx Notebook PC and HDMI audio problem with Sony TV and Windows 7

Sound does not come through with the HDMI connection and, on investigation, there is no HDMI audio driver/option.
Noting that there seemed to be an issue with windows 7 and HDMI audio which is addressed by updating the BIOS and the connexant sound driver I have done so to no effect.
The Sony TV is recognised as a standard monitor in the devices for graphics but not for audio
Suggestions as to why HDMI does not appear - including as a disabled service - and what to do t get is available?

    Hello everyone,
Thanks for posting on the HP Forums!
I will definitely assist you with lack of sound issues. Before anything else is done, please make sure you try every step in this thread: Troubleshooting Guide: Audio does not Work after a Certain Period of Time
If every step does not help, please provide the following information:
    1. The computer's model number. If you require assistance locating this information, please reference this website: Guide to finding your notebook product number
    2. The computer's operating system. If you require assistance locating this information, please reference this website to determine your Windows operating system.
    3. Does this occur on certain programs, or all programs?
    4. Have you installed any new software or drivers on this computer, before the issue appeared?
    5. What steps have been attempted from my first post on this thread, and what were the results?
Additionally, if the issue just began occurring, I would perform a system restore. I want you to bring the computer back to the earliest restore point possible, in an attempt to dodge whatever caused the issue. Here is a document on how to perform a System Restore: System Restore
Either way, let me know what happens. Thanks!

  • Video images are garbled and colors are all run together

Just got a new computer and downloaded newest version of quicktime. I can't watch any videos/webcasts etc. The sound is fine and the video plays but the screen is "garbled" and the colors are all off/run together?
I can play a dvd fine
Dont know much about computers and Dell would not help me....any ideas?

I am having a similar problem and tried the same fix and it did not work for me either. In my case the video plays for a few seconds then get choppy but the audio is fine. Someone on this site suggested that my machine does not have enough to play the H.264 codec. I do have an older machine a compaq 1.20 GHz , 512 MB Ram running XP home sp2. It should be able to run a video. After all I am not on a 486 machine. I finally had to back out of the QT 7.1.6 and currently running QT 6.5.2. It works fine for me at least at this point. But of course now that means I cannot look at videos using the latest format.

  • Exporting YTD and PERIODIC data

    Hi all,
I've adjusted a data manager package so that the YTD and PERIODIC measures are automatically selected for export to a flat file. Whenever I want to save the package the script automatically changes and removes either YTD or PERIODIC.
Any idea how I can change the script so that both YTD and PERIODIC measures are exported to a flat file?
    Thank you.

This the way I do with my co-work production or when work in a team with guys who live out of my country. You can pack/archive the whole project folder into Zip or (Rar - I do that using my PC) which reduces the project folder content globally.
There are quite many "free hosts" in our days so you can manage your work via Email or Skype and use such servers if you can not afford to buy any hosting space. To my opinion it is best to provide the original project when you use same apps, plugins etc. Any tricky export, audio file compression etc will be time consuming for your partner...

  • Phantom power problem -Samson CL8 and M-Audio unit

I just got a samson CL8 condenser mic and only get buzzing in GB when I plug it into my M-Audio MoblilePre USB interface and turn on the phantom power. I have it connected with an XLR on the mic end which goes into the USB interface with a 1/4 (not sure if that's an issue but I use the same cable with my SM58 with no problems -but of course that one doesn't need phantom power). Anyone know what this could be?

why would that work with an SM58 just fine
because an SM58 doesn't need phantom power (also, "fine" is debatable, you're not getting everything out of that mic that you could be. it should be plugged into a Mic jack, not a line-level jack)

  • 37AV50U, flickering screen and crackling audio

I have a 37-inch Toshiba tv, model number 37AV50U.  Recently, it has started flickering while on.  When it flickers, the entire screen goes black for one to five seconds, then returns to normal.  Whenever it flickers, the audio also crackles.  It does not grow either more or less frequent as the tv is on for long periods of time.  It does have periods of high frequency, when it will flicker many times each minute, and periods of low frequency, when it will flicker perhaps only once every 15 minutes or so.
I am uncertain how to diagnose this, and so any advice would be quite helpful.

Does it happen regardless of input? You should first make sure to isolate whether it's a problem with the source or a problem with the TV.
Try resetting the video and audio settings to defaults from the settings. If that still doesn't help, it might require servicing.

  • Stuttering and skipping audio, and an accidental QuickTime workaround

    Hi,
I've been having periodic problems with skipping and stuttering audio since the 10.5.6 or 10.5.6 update to OS X. Lately, it's become worse. Just about all of the audio on my system, except for Flash, stutters and skips. I visited the Genius bar at the local Apple store yesterday, and he had never seen anything like it, and suggested an archive and install of the OS, which I'm not quite ready to jump to yet. So this morning, I decided to post my problem here, and I thought it would be a good idea to make a recording of my audio problem so people would know exactly what I was talking about. Since this problem also exists in iTunes, I decided to open a QuickTime Audio Recording window while I had a particular audio file playing in iTunes repetitively. So I had the audio file playing, with its stuttering and skipping, and I opened the QuickTime Audio Recording, and waited for another skipping and stuttering occurrence. To my surprise, the skipping and stuttering stopped! I let the same audio file play for about 20 minutes, and it played perfectly. Also, while the QuickTime Audio Recording window was open, all of the other sounds (alert sounds from apps, etc.) played perfectly. When I closed the Audio Recording window, the audio problems came back! So the good news is that I've apparently found a workaround to my problem. The bad news is that I still don't know how to fix it properly. The Apple Genius suggested that I download and reinstall QuickTime, which I did, but that didn't solve the problem. I have a feeling now that this problem is related to QuickTime in some way. I'm wondering if anyone can offer additional suggestions as to a fix for this. When I right-click on an audio file and select the "Open With..." option, among the choices are three QuickTime versions, 7.5.5, 7.6, and 7.6.4, which make me think that there might be leftover components from older versions of QuickTime on my system. Is there any way that I can do a "clean" install of QuickTime that's more thorough than just a download and install?
    Thanks,
    Ken

    Hi, QuickTimeKirk,
    You asked an interesting question, and here are the results;
When I tried to open a file with QuickTime 7.5.5, it opened, and the About box reported that it was indeed QuickTime 7.5.5.
When I tried to open a file with QuickTime 7.6, the QuickTime menu options briefly appeared for 1-2 seconds, and then disappeared. After this, I couldn't find any indication that QuickTime was running, neither by cmd-tabbing nor by looking at the processes in Activity Monitor.
And QuickTime 7.6.4 opens fine, and is listed as the default app for opening this particular audio file.
Here's some more info. I did a Spotlight search on "QuickTime", and it found two versions of the QuickTime app. Version 7.6.4 was in the Applications folder of my system drive, and Version 7.6 was in the Applications folder of a 10.4.11 installation that I have on another partition of the same drive. I found no listing for a 7.5.5 app, but when I looked again at the 7.5.5 About box, I saw the following:
    QuickTime Player
    Version 7.5.5 (249.24)
    Quicktime(tm) Version 7.6.4 (1327.73)
    Copyright (c) 1989-2008 , Apple Inc.,
    All Rights Reserved
Is this normal, to have two different versions listed for a single instance of QuickTime?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
Error 7 is when a router or the connection to the router is broken in some way.
Some devices have features such as Denial Of Service protection (DoS) that cut a particular Internet Port when it thinks too much data is coming (Presuming it is an attack.)
iChat 5 in Leopard is not capped by the System Preferences > Quicktime Streaming speed (which we used to suggest was set at 1.5Mbps)
It now sees your whole Connection speed and your Upload may be much faster than this.
Your Download is likely to be much faster. However iChat will tend to operate at the lower figure of your Upload.
    DoS features are threshold based.
You may now be bumping in to this Threshold where you were not before.
SPI (Stateful packet Inspection) does a different job but has the same effect when it is overloaded by the speed of the data.
If you have either of these features, turn them Off (Disable them)

  • My ipod's music quality is inferior. It doesnt have the surround sound/ left and right audio channel unlike my brothers ipod? is there a problem with the chip?

I have an ipod touch 4g (8GB), I got this about 2.5 months ago, the same time my brother get his. My problem is that I noticed that audio quality is better on his device than mine. I have been listening to music and had different music devices before (non-Apple product and mobile phone) and the quality of music is better when I used to listen to those devices as well as my brother's ipod touch. Im referring to the left and right audio channels. Im not so good about the technical stuff but the best explanation I can give you is in a music or a movie, there's an effect wherein you can here a sound only at the left ear phone/speaker that you cant hear at the right earphone/speaker. I mean for example in a song, a guitar intro can be heared only at the left
ear while the background music plays on the other ear. Or when theres and echo effect on the song that alternates sound on the left and right ear. I hope youre getting what Im trying to say. Im bothered that my ipod is fake or has an internal problem on the chips or something because I didnt bought this at an Apple Center/Mac Center. I bought it on a retailer. I am not able to visit any store or Genius Bar  or contact an apple specialist through phone because of my work schedule and work load.  I have contacted the retailer before when I tried to return it for replacement or repair but he told me that it is under Apple's warranty, not theirs. I do hope that I can get a help from you because I want to really enjoy my device. Thank you and Im looking forward for the responce/assistance form you.

I suggest you don't apply pressure to the screen - it's a Touch - you touch the screen not push it.
    Phil

  • I have a new Macbook Pro.  When watching Youtube videos, it works perfectly until I attempt to watch the video in full screen.  When in full screen, the video freezes immediately and the audio continues.  When minimized it works fine as before. Help?

I have a brand new Macbook model A1502.  I am taking online college classes that incorporate youtube tutorial videos.  I can watch the videos if I don't maximize the screen to full screen.  When in full screen, the video freezes immediately and the audio continues uninterrupted.  I can press escape and go back to the previous screen and the video continues to play with no problems.  Can anyone help me please?  This machine is literally just out of the box with maybe an hour of use.  Thanks in advance

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.
