Garbled images - Aperture 2 + Leopard

Hi,
I'm using 1dsIII raws on my iMac and they are appearing all garbled. Bits of the images are showing in weird spots in the viewer, in other spots are green oversized pixels and pink lines. Most obvious as soon as I crop or when using the loupe... once I crop, the image only appears in teh viewer in its garbled form.
Same files work fine on my mbp with less RAM and an inferior graphics card.
Images below show what I mean.

Any help???
Dave

Hi,
If it is of any help:
I have experienced a similar issue, but then limited to ZOOM or Loupe usage.
It happens so far with 1ds MK3 files with Aperture 2 and a 2008 MacPro with 1.5.2 and all upgrades installed, standard Video Card and plenty of RAM. The very same files work fine using a QUAD G5 and also latest OSX 1.5.2 with all updates.
On the MacPro I seem to get similar issues with iphoto when zooming to 100 Percent. For a short time I suspected a card reader issue. But then I copied the files from card to desktop and imported into Aperture, Lightroom etc. LightRoom and Lightzone can process these files without any issues.
I would appreciate some advice as well. Should I try and contact Apple support? Does that help in any way?
Thanks
Stefan

  • Images exported using Leopard are soft compared to Tiger.

I've been working on exporting images for client preview and noticed that the images I'm exporting under Leopard seem a bit soft. I checked my export settings and everything looks the same as it did under Tiger.
For comparisons sake, I exported several images that had previously been exported under Tiger and there is a definite difference. Side-by-side, the images exported using Leopard are much softer than the images exported using Tiger. The edits on these images were all previously done using Tiger.
    Has anyone else noticed this?
    I'm using 1.5.6 on 10.5.1.
    Thank you!

Everything looks fine for me from Aperture and LR. I did a clean install of Leopard and all my apps on a Macbook Pro. Are you looking at images in photoshop to compare them? Preview is not a reliable way to check for sharpness right now, since some rocket scientist decide it would be cool if you couldn't scale in set increments anymore, and the randomly scaled rendition can be very soft. As a follow-on to that thought, are the images on your web site displaying at the size you exported them at? If they're being scaled on the web page, and safari is using the same rendering engine as Preview, it's possible that it's making the images look soft.
    hope i said something useful.
    Hi Janet,
Hmmm, perhaps the fresh install is the way to go? I'm using Photo Mechanic view the exported images, not Preview or Safari. I only mentioned Preview in an earlier thread because in other discussions I've found, Preview appears to exhibit some of the same softness that myself and a few others are experiencing with our Aperture exports.
Here's a screen grab of two images rendered side-by-side in PhotoMechanic. The top image was exported using Tiger while the bottom image was exported using Leopard. The actual edits on the image (white balance, sharpness, etc) were done previously in Tiger. The only thing I did to the image in Leopard was export it.
    http://www.barbatto.com/misc/comparison.jpg
In this example, it's pretty obvious that the image exported with Leopard is much softer. Also note that the file size is slightly smaller for the Leopard exported image.
As for the images on my website, most of them were exported with Aperture under Tiger. Since I've upgraded to Leopard and have been experiencing soft images, I've been using Canon's Digital Photo Professional to export any newer shots I've placed on my site.
Regarding Lightroom, I installed the trial and its exports were flawless. They don't exhibit any of the softness I am experiencing with Aperture.
So, right now, I'm at a loss. I experience this softness on both my MacPro and MacBook Pro. It should be noted that both machines were upgraded. Perhaps I should take some time and do a clean install on one of the machines and see if my results are any different. Or keep my fingers crossed that 10.5.2 will solve my problems
    Thanks for your comments!

  • MacBook Pro to TV via VGA to Components gives garbled image

    Hello everyone,
I'm the proud owner of a new unibody MacBook Pro and so far I'm loving it. There is, however, one problem. I would really like to connect the MBP to my HD TV, which happens to be a Sony FD Trinitron WEGA. At first I bought the Apple mini-DisplayPort to DVI and DVI to Video cables. It turned out the mini-DisplayPort to DVI was DVI-D and the DVI to Video was DVI-I.
I returned it and bought the mini-DisplayPort to VGA and a VGA to Components cable. When I finally got the Mac to recognize the TV, I got the garbled image with horizontal purple lines (see links to photos below). I tried every resolution from 800x600 to 1280x1024 with various refresh rates, but nothing helped. Does anyone have any idea why that might be happening? Thank you in advance.

    Hi BSteely,
Thank you again for your response. I tried to get the the TV to work with Windows, but I couldn't get the nVidia driver to output to Components. I've considered the box option, but to be honest I'd probably just get an Apple TV instead. I do want to try one more things though, do you think a VGA to S Video cable will work?
I think I'm going to call Apple support (since I still have access) and ask them how they would solve this problem. Clearly Apple has forgotten about the people who want to connect their laptops to TVs that didn't just come off the production line. One of the reasons I got the laptop was so I could watch iTunes content on the TV....
    Thanks again for your help.

  • How can I create a disk image of snow leopard installer disk from my Imac which runs it?

how can I create a disk image of snow leopard installer disk from my Imac which runs it? It came without DVD installer, and I want to make a copy of it's OS installer but can't find out how.

You need to have the disc in order to create disk image of snow leopard installer disc. What did your machine ship with? If something later than SL, then why? If earlier, then you can buy the SL installer disc and make the disk image.

  • Is it possible to upgrade a G4 Xserve with an ISO image of a Leopard DVD?

I have a G4 Xserve (tray load) with only a CD drive.  Leopard is on DVD only. I created an ISO image of the Leopard DVD but it will not work. Not sure why. I copied it to the Hard Drive of the Xserve and also tried it from an external drive (not booted from that drive however).
Any suggestions?  Was trying to avoid booting into target disk mode.  I only have an Intel laptop and not sure this would work anyway either.
    All assistance is appreciated.
    Lisa

Did not work for me. Tried copying it directly to Xserve desktop, to a partitioned drive, to an external firewire drive.  Nothing.
Sharing out the laptop DVD drive and booting to target mode did work, however. Very very VERY slow, like over 3 hours slow, but it worked.
    All up and running now.
    thanks again,
    Lisa

Hi Russ, Thank you for your reply!
    System Spec:
    2x2.26 Ghz QUAD-CORE
    12 GB RAM 1066 MHz DDR3
I've stored the library in HARD DISK which is installed inside my computer (1 TB capacity) and different from my hard disk in which I've installed all my applications (600 GB capacity).
I've installed FCP since 2001, bought FCP X in 2012: never had a problem. Yesterday I was editing my video of my last vacations (in California!) and I have updated FCP X, downloading FCP X 10.1.1: then the problem!
Strange is the fact that I've just tried to export a short project, I can see the final product quite well.
What is impossible is playing the clips within Final Cut: they are jumpimg, moving, presenting some frame in green or red ...
    Everything all right in iMovie.
I've just checked the RAM: 9GB out of 12 GB is busy, could this be the problem?
Motion is very slow: for 20 sec of project, it takes minutes to play. And once again, if you finalize the projet and export it in Quicktime, you can see it correctly.
I do hope you may suggest something, I'm getting crazy!
    Thank you in adavance

  • System image utility : creating Leopard & SL Netinstall images to share on Lion

    Hi!
I have recently upgraded to Lion server from SL server, our server had 1 main purpose: host Leopard & SL Netinstall images as well as some netboot diagnostic drives.
It seems however that with a fresh install of Lion Server that trying to create a netinstall image from anything other then Lion doesnt work, even whipping out the old 10.6.3 install DVD mounts on the system but image utility shows no valid source.
i remember going from tiger sever to leopard that i could no longer make tiger images, and had to run from a tiger system to create them, but when i was running SL, i was able to share leopard images without issue.
So, is there anyway i can (without having to reinstall SL server ) i can create fresh netinstall images of 10.5 & 10.6OS's for my shiny new Lion server to share?
now unfortunatley the leopard & SL images i had previously are gone (a HDD crash giving me reason to upgrade) (yeah yeah i know, backups.. ) but i thought i would just reimage the files again as that is this servers only purpose.
Thank you kindly in advance, any help appreciated.
    Richard

i know that was the case in Leopard and Snow Leopard but i just mounted a leopard image to create a new netrestore on my lion server.  i was not able to boot any of my images created on Leopard or SL when running Lion Server.  I assume i need to recreate the images on Lion.  Right now my Lion server is using a leopard image as the source to create a netrestore i can push on the Lion server.

  • Library All Images Aperture unexpectedly Quits

    Hi,
Every time I open Library>All Images, Aperture unexpectedly Quits.
    Please Help
    2.7 G5 & PowerBook 1 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Rebuild your library by holding down "Cmd-Option" at the same time as you click on the Aperture icon to start it. When it comes up it will ask if you want to rebuild.
If that does not help, go inside your Aperture library and move all of the project files outside the library - then add them back in one at a time, loading Aperture and trying "all libraries" to see if it works. It could be a bad file inside one of the projects.
If it is a bad file insde a project, you can go inside the problem project and remobe all the thumbnail files, and see if any master files look bad - a bit more time consuming.
To go inside both the Aperture libray and project files, go to the file in Finder, right click and select "Show Package Contents" which goes inside the library (which is just a special kind of folder).
Hopefully though the rebuild fixes things.

  • Dell VGA display garbled image..

I'm selling my Powermac G4 dual 1.25ghz MDD with and updated 512Mb video card to a friend as her first Mac to her and her son. She has a what I'm guessing is 13" Dell VGA LCD monitor. At boot up the "Select" language screen is garbled or heavily snowed as best as I can describe it.
My question is what could be the issue. I looked at her surge protector and realized it doesn't have a grounding prong so I couldn't get the Powermac to boot until I temporarily plugged in directly to the wall socket. Could it be the old, and probably dangerous surge protector, doesn't have the juice to power both Mac and display and I get the garbled image? The Mac has been formatted with Panther. It's possible the monitor is damaged to begin with but I'm looking to eliminate the simple stuff first before suggesting purchasing another monitor on top of the price of the Powermac?

    Hi-
512 MB graphics card? There is only one of those that I know of, and it only works in 10.4.6 and later.
Do you get the garbled image when plugged in to the wall outlet directly?
I'd try an OEM graphics card with Panther.

  • Aperture and Leopard-Canon RAW (CR2) Images look sharper?

Got back on Aperture after a week tinkering with Leopard and other things. In full screen mode the images look sharper. I know Apple have done things to Core image, but have they tweaked it for Aperture & images?
    Also now much nippier!

Not all CR2 files are the same
In other words, while they may have the same suffix, the Raw from every model of camera needs to be supported individually.
Here's a list of the cameras currently supported:

  • Export images from Aperture with Leopard

Since switching to Leopard I have a problem with my exported images. When I export my images to my desktop or external drive they are now in individual folders. This is such a pain. I never had this problem in OS 10.4. Did I miss a setting somewhere???

  • IPhoto garbles image while trying to edit.

I don't even know if garbles is the right word for what is happening, but everyone I've asked is stumped. This problem apparently affects other applications on my computer, like Aperture and Preview, but I first noticed it in iPhoto.
Whenever I attempt to edit a photo, such as by dragging the Shadows slider in iPhoto, Highlights slider in Aperture, or using the Alpha tool in Preview, my picture changes to a wild and crazy assortment of lines and colors, usually lime green and hot pink, though it varies depending on what I'm working on.
I've taken screenshots of the problem. Notice that just the photo I'm editing is affected, not the rest of the computer.

I've deleted .plists and reinstalled iLife to no avail. The problem persists inside of a Guest account.
I'm running a MacBook Pro, Core Duo 2.0 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.6.2, with iLife 09 and Aperture 3, though the problem also occurred in Aperture 2. I'm thinking this issue might be Snow Leopard related, or hopefully, 10.6.2 related, since I believe the problem began after running the update. Not sure though.
Any input is highly valued, anybody have any ideas as to what could be causing this? Makes it kinda hard to edit pictures...

This has been reported as a problem and will have to be corrected by Apple - report to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback

  • Either Aperture or Leopard doesn't support Canon 450D .CR2

I've imported a number of images from my wife's Canon 450D (Digital Rebel XSi) and while the images shot in JPEG alone are fine, the ones shot in RAW+JPEG are replaced with the red "unsupported image format" warning. These images show fine on my wife's mini (also running the same OS version, but iPhoto '09).
However, while the CR2 files from my 40D and CRW files from my venerable D30 display in Finder, the 450D's CR2 files are black. The JPEGs shot at the same time do display in Finder, however.
I did try deleting the duplicate JPEG images but that made no difference, and I have no tildes in the folder name.
So, given that Leopard does support the 450D's CR2 (wife's computer), and that the problem only exists with the camera's RAW files on my computer, I guess this means that there's something wrong with my install of the OS or Aperture. I don't really want to go down the route of converting to DNG, so other than that any suggestions?

The functionality for your camera was added way back in +Digitical Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.1+ (we're now on 2.7 so this would have been quite a while ago.)
    See: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL61
It would have shown up as a Software Update to the operating system itself (because the same update provides RAW support for both Aperture and iPhoto.)
Check "System Preferences" -> "Software Update" -> "Installed Software". You should see a list of all the software updates ever installed on your computer. It's probably easier to click on the column heading "Name" which will cause it to sort the updates by name (instead of by date installed which I think might be the default.) then scroll the list to search for "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update" to see if you can find any version number which is 2.1 +or later+ (2.7 is the most recent).
If it's not installed, run Software Update to add it. If it shows that it is installed there may be a problem with your installation. You might try re-installing.
I did notice that the minimum OS requirement show that if you're running Leopard then your OS version needs to be at least 10.5.2 or later. Is there any chance you've not kept up with patches to Leopard (which would cause Software Update to skip applying the Camera RAW update)?

  • Can't open Aperture in Leopard

    Hi,
I cannot open Aperture now that I have installed Leopard. I have the latest versions on a G5 Dual. The icon bounces then I get a dialogue that says, "Aperture quit unexpectedly do you want to report...". I have tried using a different user...same thing. I have restarted and repaired permissions. I also have Photoshop CS4 which works great and iPhoto is fine. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Rob

Same here. I cannot launch Aperture. Icon bounces about 6 times in the dock, then nothing. The startup window just stays there until I force quit.
I, too, have repaired permissions, thrown away aperture plist (preferences) restarted my MacPro. My lastest attempt was a reinstall of Aperture.
    Still nothing.
I know its not totally a Leopard thing as I have been able to launch it on occasion. I have not been able to pinpoint why it works every once in a while (about once every dozen or so attempts)
This has me puzzled. Its also very irritating.
    Anyone?

  • After 10000 images, Aperture begins to importing new images out of order

    Hi All,
I'm at about 13,000 images and from time to time I noticed that whenever I imported images after 10,000...Aperture at that point had begun the numbering sequence over again, some of the images would wind up next to its identically numbered image say from a year ago. In other words, Aperture is sorting by image number instead of by date even though I've selected date.
Now it is happening all the time and all the new images (after 10,000) are finding their home somewhere within the catalog of images instead of at the very end.
I thought I was going to be able to resolve the issue quickly by selecting the 'sort by image date' but that does not fix it. I've tried sorting the dates in an ascending and descending order but nothing I try fixes the sequence. I desperately need to get my images back into chronological order. Any idea?
    Thanks,
    Tyler

    orehek -
Are you renaming the images on import? and if so, which preset are you using? Aperture doesn't have its own naming system otherwise. It uses the file names as the version name.
Also, as another poster asked, which view are you using to view them all at once? All Photos? You can't have more than 10K versions in a single project I believe but I don't see how that could contribute to the weirdness you are seeing.
As for why sort by date doesn't work, that makes no sense. Unless what you actually have is correct, ie, you have duplicate images in your library, that rightly have the same date and name, so the sorts reflect that. Or you have made new versions from your existing images - those would also sort like that. Can you give us some more details/examples?
