Garbled text in Safari webpages

I'm unable to read paragraphs of webpages, in particular the Apple Startpage. Paragraph copy within the "Top Stories" section is some kind of garbled text I do not recognize. I've seen the same in other websites, but not always.
I've scanned all the posts about removing Helvetica fractions, and Times Phonetic, but do not have them. I've resolved all font duplications within fontbook as well. What could be the conflict?

If you could send a screenshot, I could perhaps offer a suggestion. Send to tom at bluesky dot org.

  • Garbled text in Safari after installing Lion

After installing Lion, Safari now displays many pages with what appears to be missing font, garbled text. Many sites I've visted in the past (including my bank) just have "AAAAAAAA" wherever there's supposed to be text.
My first thought is either missing font or font clash. I never had this under Snow Leopard. Any ideas?

There are two problems that leads to this.
    Mismatching permissions
    Corrupted cache entry's
First you should try to clear the safari cache.
To do so, click on the Safari menu bar at Safari and choose there empty cache.
If that does not solve the garbled fonts, perform a permission repair on your system disk, using the Disk Utility.
Before doing that, close ALL running applications.
Ignore upcoming messages like "could not repair on file XY" while performing permission repair, cause this will happen as you perform the task on a running system and opened files can not get changed.
If the problem persits, report back here.
I recommend to perform anyway a permission repair after every major update, cause during the update process, very often file permissions get crumbled. This will also solve some other issues after system upgrades.

  • .bnk files rendered as garbled text in Safari

I'm working with a customer who links to .BNK files from their web application. .BNK files are a proprietary educational format, and they open natively in education software installed on the computer. But for some reason, Safari attempts to render these files (as garbled text), rather than downloading them to open in the software. IE and Firefox don't have this problem when they're used to access the same files off of the same server. The files download properly in these other browsers.
Does anyone know why Safari is trying to render the .BNK files and how we might be able to override that?

Archive (.zip) them prior to upload.
A .zip file will always download.

  • More garbled text in Safari 3.2.1 Tiger

I'm running the latest Tiger 10.4.11 with all of the various updates and recently I've noticed that some web pages are loading with garbled text. This usually occurs with formatted text, like bold, a different color, italic, etc. If I open the exact same page (using the "develop" menu item) with either Camino or FireFox, I can actually read the page with no garbled text.
What gives? I've dumped the font caches (with FontFinangler) and even reinstalled Safari, with exactly the same result. I shouldn't be getting nonsense words when using my favorite web browser.
It seems that others have experienced this same issue with Safari while running Leopard.

  • Garbled Text/Odd font in Safari since updating to Tiger.  Java related?

I seem to be having a problem with Safari since I updated to Tiger.
I'm running Safari 2.0.3, and have been encountering problems with garbled text in a strange font when Safari loads certain pages. The text often overlaps making it impossible to read.
A friend thinks it might be Java related. I've tried clearing the cache and resetting Java, but it hasn't helped.
    Here's a screenshot example: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/tashamay/Picture2.jpg
On the Petfinder.com page specifically, if I go directly to their home site everything is fine, but once I try and search the results come up all messed up.
I also have a problem with it when I try andl log into gmail. "Loading" comes up on the screen in the garbled text font as if it's trying to load an applet, but nothing happens. I eventually get the spinning rainbow of death and have to force quit.
    Any ideas?

    Hello tashamay:
I am not an expert in font issues, but you may have corrupt fonts. Open "font book.' Select all and run resolve duplicates. Then select all and run validate fonts. I also have read that Helvetica fractional fonts have caused some rendering problems.
I would also clear the Safari cache again.

  • Safari quits all the time, can't find server, garbled texts

Safari can't find server, will not browse, quits all the time, garbled texts, don't know if I am using  safari and snow leopard or safari with ox lion which i have upgraded recently.

SOMETHING ABOUT THE HARD DRIVE  SYMBOL START UP?
    I don't understand this.
I also disabled third party addons, is that wrong?
If you mean Safari extensions, that's OK. Extensions are not necessary in order to use Safari.

  • I get garbled text on web pages using yahoo with Safari 7.0.5

I get garbled text on web pages using yahoo with Safari 7.0.5 and have Maverick 10.9.4.

From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

  • Safari Showing Garbled text why

I saw a similar post on this & there was a link to font Finagler. I tried it & still no luck. If I select the copy & past in a text edit doc. it reads fine. It also loads correctly in Fire Fox. So I believe it pertains strictly to Safari ? Here's a screen shot. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the links...not sure exactly what fixed it though. I tried Font Finagler and it didn't work. I also have Smasher so I ran that. After restarting, the same page I posted then changed all the garbled text to being squished into a tiny block. I found that out by selecting the page copying & pasting it to a new Text Edit Doc. I then went into Font Agent Pro & looked at Helvetica. Only one was activated (Helvetica Oblique) I then Activated Apples Helvetica. And wow it's showing right. So I guess some type of Helvetica conflict ? Anyway thanks for the help.

  • Why am i getting fractions instead of text on some webpages?

i'm getting fractions/mathematical sentences instead of text of some webpages. after reading another post with a similar problem. i did what they said would solve the problem, getting rid of the fonts Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic. that didn't work.
i got rid of those fonts. searched thru my hard drive to make sure there weren't other copies of those fonts on my system, but the fractions still show up on some webpages.
i restarted after trashing the fonts and did a disk permissions repair. anything else i need to do?

tom, i'll email you with a screen shot.
It's helvetica fractions or something similar.
    when i went
to the fontfinagler download site, the example of
garbled text was different from what i am
    experiencing.
That's irrelevant. The point is that your machine may still think you have helvetica fractions because it is still in the caches. Clean them.
by the way, firefox works fine.
This font substitution problem normally only affects Apple Cocoa apps like Safari, Mail, Address Book, etc.

  • Firefox prints garbled text no matter what, from my XP-SP3 HT-P4 to my HP LJ 1200 PCL

I am using FF 3.6.13 on a HT-P4, 3 GHz, with XP-SP3, 4Gig RAM lots of HD space. Every other application on my machine prints fine to my HP LaserJet 1200 PCL (even MS Explorer and G-Chrome) but no matter what I do in terms of changing settings or fonts, no matter what webpage or HTML file I pull up in it, FF prints garbled text. Some times not all of the text is garbled but usually the parts I really need are the ones garbled.

I wonder whether anyone can give me advice on the above problem, thanks. Have upgraded to Firefox 9.

  • Prints Garbled Text with HP845C

    My Garbled Text problem:
My MacBook is back from Applecare after it went dead, and the internal hard disk was wiped clean by them as I requested, and in checking completed print jobs, I see that they did try printing a document or two after reformatting and re-installing OS X.
However, my MacBook STILL continues to print garbled text from every application when connected, either directly or via Airport, to my HP 845C, regardless of which hard disk I start up from, even the one reformatted by AppleCare. (I have three different 10.4.11 hard disks available to start up from.)I have tried this MacBook with other printers, and text prints just fine.
In addition, I routinely send documents to this HP 845C from other computers, and it prints just fine from them.
So how can it be a software problem?
So, it seems that this particular printer no longer likes my MacBook. !? (They used to work together just fine.)
How can this be and what can I do about it? Does anyone have a clue?
Is there someway I can re-set this printer to come back into "like" with my MacBook? Resetting the Printer System through Printer Setup Utility does not help.
I have found nothing on the HP website to help.
Looking forward to advice from the geniuses here on the forum.
In addition, Safari continues to quit unexpectedly on this MacBook after clicking on any link, regardless of which hard disk I start the MacBook from, even the one reformatted by AppleCare. This is very odd.

    Hi Nathan,
I think we need to figure out the crashing first.
    Here's what I'd try...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    On the Printer side...
    Might try these two...
Mac OS X: About the Reset Printing System feature ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1341?viewlocale=en_US
Might try Printer Setup Repair 5.1...
    http://www.fixamac.net/software/index.html
    Reinstall the Latest Printer Driver.

  • Can I highlight text on a webpage?

Help instructions are not correct for lighlighting text on a webpage. They say to go to safari preferences, general, and select the highlight color, but I don't see anything about highlighting or colors.

System Preferences > General > Highlight Color
    Default is Blue.
Click inside the box and select the color desired from the popup menu.
It is System Preferences not Safari Preferences in where you select the highlight color.
    Best.

  • How to select text from a webpage

hi. i have firefox for my n900. i would like to know how to select some text from a webpage so i can copy and paste it. thanks for the help. i couldn't it anywhere.

First tap where you want the selection to start. (It might help to zoom in as far as possible first. You can do this using the volume buttons in the newly-released Firefox 1.1rc1.) Then hold the Shift key while pressing the arrow keys on the N900 keyboard to select text.
Note: We are aware that this is not a very user-friendly way to select text, and we hope to include a better design in a future version of mobile Firefox.

  • Since 10.5.6 upgrade, email messages are garbled text

    Hi,
This problem seems to have started with the latest upgrade. My email messages are coming in with garbled text. This happens in my Yahoo account where I will go to the mail website and the text there will be fine. It's only in the mail program.
    Thanks in advance,
    Pete.

    Hi,
    I have the same issue.
Although the mails seems to have been downloaded correctly parts of the parts of the message mime information is displayed as part of the mail body.
The only thing that helps is to rebuild the index of the specific mailbox (inbox in my case).
BTW: Mail of iPhone OS does NOT have this problem. Generally it handles mails MUCH better than the real OS X. Strange, isn't it.
