Garbled Text with Tiger Install

need some help with a G4 Dual 1 ghz M8493 Quicksilver that I bought that has some issues with the operating system. I erased the 80G drive and free space and Installed Tiger by starting up on the install disk all the text was jumbled up and missing. The system installed but after a restart all text was unreadable and missing letters across the desktop. I erased again the hardrive and rebooted to 10.2.8 everything went well and the text was fine. I have an external that I booted to 10.3.9 and again text was garbled and missing what gives ? I ran an older version of DW for X to no avail I also checked the Font
Book for validation of fonts and duplicates and that was fine also ran Disk utillity . I have a campaq monitor hook to a 4mx graphic card , 512 ram .

I have a similar problem but only, so far displaying the pound symbol. I did have a postscript version of Helvetica Neue running but have turned that off but with no change. In fact I've turned off all Helvetica fonts that are not system required, which will cause some problems down the line, but I'll deal with that later.
Previously when I encountered this it was Helvetica Fractions but I haven't installed that on my new system.
Like the person before, this has only become apparent since updating to Safari 4. Any advice would be great.

Is this a Wireless KB you have? Many aren't recognized until after booting.
Hmmm, you've got the firmware Update needed for the AGP to install/use 10.4...
I think I'd try this, worked for me on 3 such macs...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume, then choose MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Partition tab.

  • Prints Garbled Text with HP845C

    My Garbled Text problem:
My MacBook is back from Applecare after it went dead, and the internal hard disk was wiped clean by them as I requested, and in checking completed print jobs, I see that they did try printing a document or two after reformatting and re-installing OS X.
However, my MacBook STILL continues to print garbled text from every application when connected, either directly or via Airport, to my HP 845C, regardless of which hard disk I start up from, even the one reformatted by AppleCare. (I have three different 10.4.11 hard disks available to start up from.)I have tried this MacBook with other printers, and text prints just fine.
In addition, I routinely send documents to this HP 845C from other computers, and it prints just fine from them.
So how can it be a software problem?
So, it seems that this particular printer no longer likes my MacBook. !? (They used to work together just fine.)
How can this be and what can I do about it? Does anyone have a clue?
Is there someway I can re-set this printer to come back into "like" with my MacBook? Resetting the Printer System through Printer Setup Utility does not help.
I have found nothing on the HP website to help.
Looking forward to advice from the geniuses here on the forum.
In addition, Safari continues to quit unexpectedly on this MacBook after clicking on any link, regardless of which hard disk I start the MacBook from, even the one reformatted by AppleCare. This is very odd.

    Hi Nathan,
I think we need to figure out the crashing first.
    Here's what I'd try...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Problems with Tiger Install

Previously having OS 10.2, I tried to install 10.4 from an installation disc over 10.2, and it failed to install. After failing to install, the computer made me restart, and now it goes to a screen giving an error about a Mac OS 10.4 and 10.5 Driver. The Computer can't find drivers for 10.4 and 10.5. I cannot boot from an Apple I-care disc, the machine tries to boot into an OS, but there is a question mark, instead of an OS Icon in the middle of the screen, and then shortly after comes the error message. The machine locks up.
I thought maybee the problem was intalling OS10.4 as an update, because there was a gap between version previously installed and the new one, but the installation guide says OS 10.2 or later is updatable.
    Please Help.

    Hi Brandon,
If you are not able to start up from your installation DVD there might be a problem with your DVD drive.
If this is the case then there are two things you might do:
1- (and most obvious) take your Mac in for repair.
2- Fire Wire Target Disk Mode... (For this option you will need a second Mac)
    - Target Disk Mode will basically turn your iMac into an external HD, by doing this you will be able to use a second Mac with a working disc drive to start up from the Tiger DVD and then install it on your iMac.
If you are going to do this it is important that no other FireWire devices are connected to either of the computers.
How to start your iMac in Target Disk Mode: Start up the computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears.
Once you have done this connect it to the second Mac (with FireWire)
Now insert the Tiger DVD in the second Mac, when the disk appears on the Desktop open it and double click on "install"
A window with a restart button will appear... click and restart (there will be no need to hold the "c" key.
Once the computer has started up from the Tiger DVD you need to find UTILITIES or TOOLS (i can remember the exact name) on the top bar
Click on it and open Disk Utility then follow the steps of my previous post.
Make sure that you have selected the correct HD to erase and install (it will not be the first one on the list)
    Good Luck.

  • I installed Snow Leopard 10.6.8 yesterday. Documents created by Pages '09 (v 4.1) are reformatted / garbled / text lost, I installed Snow Leopard 10.6.8 yesterday. Documents created by Pages '09 (v 4.1) are reformatted / garbled / text lost

Fonts (Arial, Times New Roman) are s p r e a d, or sometimes crowded, and sometimes in the same word. Smartquotes are messed up; apostrophe-s and apostrophe-t are made into some unicode-like characters, as is italicized fl. And finally, text itself has been omitted. This is Pages from iWork '09.
Not all Pages documents have been disrupted in all these ways. But the Arial font, which I use in page headers, does seem to have been consistenly altered. Opening a Word document resulted in it opening in Pages; here, error messages noted that Ariel MS was substituted for the missing Ariel, and TimesNewRoman MS was subsituted for the missing TimesNewRoman.
Opening Word itself (Office for Mac, Word 10.1.4, created 2003) required re-loading Rosetta. Opening two documents, one substiuted 11-point TimesNewRoman (presumably MS) for 12 point; the other kept the 12-pt TimesNewRoman I always use. Again, the page hearers in Ariel looked altered.

After filling in problem detail, and filling out tags and categories (which I'd missed; this was my first entry to this forum) (and my title was doubled) this page apparently scanned my text and posted similar problems under "More Like This".
By following links I found "New Times Roman (only) font in Pages goes suddenly berserk" (NOTE: The font referred to is actually "Times New Roman"), posted by Magnificent7 in 2009.
After reading the discussion I opened Applications--> Font Book, and found that I had duplicate files for Ariel and Times New Roman, among others. I used commands in the program to discover and disable certain duplicate. On opening my Pages document(s) with problems, things looked ok, but there were still substitutions. Certain Word documents still exhibited a change in font or size.
I read that the location of path/directories for font was changed in 10.6.
Note these points about Font Book:
The Edit--> Select Duplicated Fonts command selected all duplications EXCEPT in Arial and Times New Roman.
The Edit--> Resolve Duplicates command executes, in effect, Disable commands. This didn't make things better for me, until I went back and re-Enabled the disabled fonts, and Disabled the others
The difference: Font Book disabled newer fonts (Preview--> Show Font Info), with copyrights of 2006 and "Kind" of "Open Type True Type". It selected for use, older-copyright fonts, of Kind "True Type".
The comments of "fruhulda" in the discussion mentioned above, suggested to choose "Open Type True Type". This is what worked for me.
In brief: use the Select Duplicates command IN ADDITION to fonts you know are messed up, and disable the older ones.
The File--> Validate Font command was also useful.
I also found info through Google, specifically about emptying the font cache, but I didn't do that.

  • Installing Panther on G4 iBook which came with Tiger

Anyone help? I want to install Panther on G4 iBook which came with Tiger installed. I've used my iMac Panther disks to install, but although the iBook goes all through the installation process, it won't start up from Panther.

    Lyssa
Thanks for your reply. I suspected this might be the case but still hope there might be a way round it.
I want Panther on the iBook first because I prefer it to Tiger. Tiger has some annoying little features - for example, the fact that if you select a whole load of files and Get Info on them you get a separate window for each file - if you want to hide the extensions you have to tick the box in each separate window. In Panther you get a single window applying to all the files - neat! There are various other silly little things like this.
Second, the versions of Mail in Panther and Tiger are incompatible. If I save an email on the iBook (while away from home, for example) and want to transfer it to one of the mailboxes on my (Panther) iMac, I have to go through the following laborious process:
    1. Save the email on the iBook in Raw Message format. Copy it to the iMac (via a mobile hard drive).
    2. Create a temporary mailbox folder in Mail on the iMac. Close Mail.
    3. Go to Users ... Library/Mail/Mailboxes. Change the extension of the temporary folder from mbox to txt.
    4. Open it (it now opens as an ordinary folder).
    5. Copy the text of the email into the document called mbox.
    6. Close the folder, change its extension back to mbox.
    7. Open Mail again, move the email from the temporary folder into the folder where it belongs.
    8. Delete the temporary folder.
    Ridiculous or what?

  • Install OS 9 on PowerBook G4 with Tiger

I have a 2003 17" PowerBook G4 with Tiger installed on it. I need to have Classic on it. The original PowerBook restore disk will not install OS 9 or anything else because, it says, the operating system on the computer is newer than the restore disk's. I want to just install OS 9 so that I can have Classic, but have not found a way to do this. The PB G4 is not OS 9-bootable. Any ideas?

On the PB G4 Restore Disk there is an installer for additional software and classic support. However, it doesn't work. When I run it, it goes for a minute, then opens a window requesting I insert the disk with a matching design on it. What it's requesting is the same CD that's already in there, but since it doesn't know it's there, I eject it and re-insert it. Still it does nothing. The only option is to Quit. There is nothing from the regular OS X installation to install Classic.
So, is my only option to use the Restore disk on a Firewire drive, install OS X and Classic on it, then copy it over to my regular boot drive?
    Thanks for your help.

  • MB Pro, with Tiger, which has since upgraded to Leopard - Install Discs?

My MacBook Pro had originally been installed with Tiger. I have since upgraded to Leopard.
Should I need to boot from my install discs, which install disc do I use? Will my Tiger install discs work with Leopard, or should I use my Leopard disc (retail version)?
    Thank you!

    {quote:title=Kappy wrote:}
Actually you would be better to install Leopard directly. You can reinstall pre-bundled software separately without installing Tiger. An Erase and Install of Leopard would be preferable to installing Tiger then upgrading to Leopard. Less chance of a problem.
    Hi Kappy,
Some, at least, of the late 2007 MBP C2D 2.2 and 2.4 GHz MBPs (mine included) actually came with Tiger Installed, but with a "drop in" copy of Leopard enclosed in the box. From memory the version of Leopard included will only install if the original software is in place. (I'm not 100% certain of this, but I'll check) Not sure what Trisha's situation is, of course, but worth bearing in mind as a possible issue.

    hi
i got a used Power Mac g3 (350mhz, 512mb, 6gb, CD,)with Tiger installed, but during the boot process, it stops at the "Starting Mac OS X" It still shows the progress bar and it is still moving, but i think it must have errors and cannot progress. I am a noobie to Macs, but i have been arround Windows PCs and Linux for a long time....By the way i got Ubuntu PPC to boot nicely on it, so i think the problem must be software. I will gladly buy OS X Tiger, if that will fix the problem (reinstalling) But i want to make sure it is software before i buy any software.....thanks,

upgrade the hard drive to a 60gb or 80gb, this should be no problem, right??
It is very important to determine whether you have a Rev 1 or Rev 2. The rev 1 "HeartBreaker" Blue & White generally does not respond well to a new hard drive that is any faster than the stock model. Rather than generating error messages, it gets so flaky and unreliable as to be unuseable.
This article show the "stacking bracket". If you have that, you almost certainly have a rev 2 [the reverse is NOT true.]

  • Booting from Panther Cd from a Tiger installed Mac

I have a Lacie FW HD partitioned as 1: OS9, 2:Panther and 3:Spare Storage Capacity and I need to do an archive install of Panther, but I find that the Panther Boot CD will NOT boot up on any Mac with Tiger installed.
Is this a huge Tiger bug or a bad CD?
    Anyone else noticed this?

    Hi, FastMac.
I still suspect it's not a bad or defective CD but the age of the CD w.r.t. the Macs you are trying to boot from it: the Macs probably have later firmware versions than that specified on the CD.
Obviously, if the CD itself has scratches, cracks, or other visible surface defects that could prevent one from booting from it.
However, you can see if the CD itself is bad by mounting it and then running Verify Disk against the CD using the First Aid tab in Disk Utility. If Verify Disk gives the CD a clean bill of health, then it's very likely the firmware level incompatibility I discussed before.
    Good luck!

  • Powermac G4 will not boot from CD with OS10 install BUT will boot with OS 9

I have a Powermac G4 which had been running OS 10.38 or 39. The system on start up would sound the tones, the grey screen with Apple logo displays and the rotating clock at the bottom of the screen ultimately freezes and nothing more happens.
I presume that the hard drive is either smoked or corrupted so I buy a replacement drive and Tiger, and go through the following steps:
I disconnect the old drive and try to boot my g4 with Tiger install disks. The start up freezes in the same way as with old disk.
I find my old Panther install disks and the system freezes in the same way.
I then use my 9.2 install disk and the system boots and I get cannot see my new drive.
I disconnect my new drive, reconnect my old drive and re-boot with 9.2 and find my old drive mounts. Big Smile but...
    here is the question:
Since I apparently have a still functional drive, why won't my install CD for Panther or DVD for Tiger not boot this system???? I do have a panasonic DVD/CD writer which is aftermarket if that might be the issue. If so would re-installing the apple CD player make a difference?
(I have also zapped the PRAM)
I am on the way out to try and find a copy of disk warrior to try and salvage my old drive. All help would be appreciated.

I had a really weird problem that might be something like you're experiencing. I was trying to get Tiger onto a "Yikes" PCI G4, and it would not boot up with the Tiger disk.I did everything I could come up with, and no luck. I spent a good bit of time here and over at macosx.com, and no one could figure it out. I finally just re-installed 10.2.8 on a partition, and for some unknown reason, the computer booted with the Tiger disk, and I was able to install. I let the people on the boards know it, but didn't go back to tell them what happened the next day. When I tried to restart, it would only boot into OS9. If I tried to force Tiger (like by choosing it as start-up) it would go to a black screen. Anyway, it ended up no go. If you'd like to go through all the things I did, here's the link to that thread:

  • Reinstall Leopard on Mini that came with Tiger

I have a Mini that came with Tiger installed just before Leopard came out and I got the disk to update it to Leopard through the up to date program. I updated it to Leopard and have been using this Mini to load and test a lot of different programs.
I want to re-install Leopard doing a erase and install to start again clean but am wondering if I can do it form the update disk or will I need to install Tiger first and then run the update to Leopard like I did after I received it?

put in the install disc, and when you're at the screen where you select which disc to install to, click options, and it gives you the option to erase partition and reinstall leopard without needing to upgrade. did i word that confusing? it says that you need v 10.4 *or higher to do the upgrade, BUT if you don't click options and choose the reformat (last option) then it will upgrade and keep your old system folder on the drive. any questions, i'll be checking back at this post.

  • Re-installing 10.1 after 'Tiger' install

    Hello,
This problem involves a Mac G4 with Tiger installed at the moment[all software updates installed]
After a recent upgrade to Tiger, there exists now, a specific problem with PS-CS. Without going into too much detail, suffice it to say that the problem didn't exist with OS 10.1. This problem is seemingly irrepairable.... having been looked at by a tehnician and several other people. They have tried to resolve this issue with no luck.
It seems that this issue wasn't present with the OS 10.1[original OS with this mac].
Everything that can be done, has been done to try and resolve this issue, including deleting/removing PS-CS.
    Problem:
I have tried to re-install 10.1, using the install disk and trying to boot into the DVD install disk but to no avail. I cannot access a way of formatting the main disk or deleting the partition in disk utilities, either.
Is it that one cannot re-install or ''go back'' to a previous version or is there another way that is safe?
    TIA.
    Chris

Cornelius, I hadn't gone into that aspect of the[PhSop] problem at all in this post... I will give it a go though.
    Problem:
there are seperate photographic sheets with 'images' and 'combinations of colours'. These are a standard which are used to co-ordinate and present a perspective [primarily of colours, but also textures represented in these pictures[skin-tone, etc.] between the printer and monitor[can't think of the word when the 2 are fixed in unison].
One of these sheets has images of 4 children filling the very lowest part of the page. With this install of PS, there is a presence of ''fishskin'' in the ''lighter coloured'' areas of some of the kids faces'...slightly shiney and opaque, almost like the printer forgot to colour in this area, but in a slightly fish-skin-like-way. It is a bit like over flash, but not as strong.
This/these sheet/s are templates for 'co-ordinating' the printer and monitor.
The technician I referred to has used as many means as he can to set this right but with no luck so far. The monitor has been ''spidered'' correctly [a device that looks like a spider and sits on top of the monitor face and in conjunction with the coloured sheets produce/provide for a [hopeful] match]. All drivers and utilities[within printer software] have been deployed to try and resolve this issue and all done correctly.
    You said:
Are you saying that you that when you boot from your Tiger install disk holding down the "C" key and go to the Utilities menu and launch Disk Utility, that all other options are greyed out?
sorry if it's confused but it's not the Tiger, but the previous, original G4 OS X install copy I am having a problem with. [I will check out which version tomorrow and post it].
I can't start the install process ''at all'', no matter what way I try it...not able to use the erase in D.U in the present Tiger install, 'target disk'[dvd] or using 'C' at boot up.
Should one be able to go back to using a previous install disk/s, to a previous version in the first place? I mean there wouldn't be much point in installing an older version if one has the latest one.
But perhaps, by doing so, this may resolve the issue of ole fishy-skin. This problem wasn't present with the older original [previous] version of OS X.

  • Garbled text in Safari after installing Lion

After installing Lion, Safari now displays many pages with what appears to be missing font, garbled text. Many sites I've visted in the past (including my bank) just have "AAAAAAAA" wherever there's supposed to be text.
My first thought is either missing font or font clash. I never had this under Snow Leopard. Any ideas?

    Abiola O wrote:

There are two problems that leads to this.
    Mismatching permissions
    Corrupted cache entry's
First you should try to clear the safari cache.
To do so, click on the Safari menu bar at Safari and choose there empty cache.
If that does not solve the garbled fonts, perform a permission repair on your system disk, using the Disk Utility.
Before doing that, close ALL running applications.
Ignore upcoming messages like "could not repair on file XY" while performing permission repair, cause this will happen as you perform the task on a running system and opened files can not get changed.
If the problem persits, report back here.
I recommend to perform anyway a permission repair after every major update, cause during the update process, very often file permissions get crumbled. This will also solve some other issues after system upgrades.

  • Garbled Text/Odd font in Safari since updating to Tiger.  Java related?

I seem to be having a problem with Safari since I updated to Tiger.
I'm running Safari 2.0.3, and have been encountering problems with garbled text in a strange font when Safari loads certain pages. The text often overlaps making it impossible to read.
A friend thinks it might be Java related. I've tried clearing the cache and resetting Java, but it hasn't helped.
    Here's a screenshot example: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a2/tashamay/Picture2.jpg
On the Petfinder.com page specifically, if I go directly to their home site everything is fine, but once I try and search the results come up all messed up.
I also have a problem with it when I try andl log into gmail. "Loading" comes up on the screen in the garbled text font as if it's trying to load an applet, but nothing happens. I eventually get the spinning rainbow of death and have to force quit.
    Any ideas?

    Hello tashamay:
I am not an expert in font issues, but you may have corrupt fonts. Open "font book.' Select all and run resolve duplicates. Then select all and run validate fonts. I also have read that Helvetica fractional fonts have caused some rendering problems.
I would also clear the Safari cache again.
