  • Connecting a Garmin GPS USB

I'm a somewhat new convert to the mac world, so thank you in advance for understanding. I have a Garmin GPS that I was able to connect through USB on a windows PC formerly, but now can't figure out how to get it to connect under my Parallels installation of Win XP using Garmin's City Navigator mapping software, which is apparently not yet available in the Mac OS.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

    You don't.
USB devices must be specifically supported in a
    virtualized environment. Use BootCamp instead.
If you want to keep trying to use it via Parallels,
    install the 3096 beta build.
I downloaded the 3096 beta build and still couldn't connect. Interestingly, with my old G-3, I had downloaded Palm Desktop which would hot synch with my Garmin iQue, to transfer addresses and date book data (Palm Desktop wouldn't allow transfer of map data). Now, with my fancy new MacPro with Windows XP Pro, I can't connect with my GPS in Windows, and I cannot synch with it in the Mac OS with Palm Desktop.
I spent an hour with a Garmin tech who admitted that he wasn't too hep on the Mac, but was unable to solve the problem of not recognizing the GPS with a Hot Synch. He did say that Garmin was working on new drivers to allow the Mac and Garmin to connect but it could be months away.

  • Compatibility with Garmin gps

FYI Some of the Garmin gps software is not compatible with Leopard. Their webpage says Mac compatible. Maybe pre Leopard, not Leopard. Had to do a firmware update on my wife's PC.

The only 3rd party apps you can install on your iPhone is what is available via the iTunes app store. There are a number of 3rd party GPS navigation apps available for the iPhone with maps used by the application stored locally on the iPhone with the application.

  • Mapping software/website for 8120 Pearl

Hi, I'm wondering what the best mapping software or website is for the 8120 Pearl.  I'm talking about something like a Google maps application, I don't need GPS.  I do have the Google maps mobile software but it requires A LOT of data transfer.  Is there anything else out there that is less data-intensive and has good coverage in Canada?  Thanks a lot.

Most of them require GPS. Google Maps is a good one that doesn't, as it allows the cell tower location service to find you.

  • Garmin GPS Model: 1370T SKU: 9904727

I note this can be purchased for $89. Does it come with lifetime upgrades.
I have a nuvi that is about 4 years old, and recently determined that it needs to be updated, when it took me 20 miles longer, due to new roads.
I then learned that it is going to cost me $49 for a one time update, and $89 for a lifetime update. Pretty disappointed based upon the original cost of this electronic item, that is non reliable.
So I am considering all options, as the product I bought, Garmin Nuvi serial number 1DN283094 is now basically worhtless.
So, if the subject item can be purchased, for $89, maybe Garmin will earn my repeat business.
    Thank You
    Peace

    Hello BananaTom,
The model that you’ve indicated does include Lifetime Traffic, but it does not have Lifetime Maps. With most Garmin models of GPS, these features are indicated in the model number by a “T” for traffic updates and an “M” for map updates. You’ll find many that include one or the other, and some that include both. That is a good place to start in looking for one with Lifetime Maps, but I have also filtered a selection of Garmin GPS units that include Lifetime Maps for you. You can find that selection here.
    I hope this helps!

  • Garmin, GPS & Googleearth

    Hi!
I want to plan and transfer waypoints & tracks from Googleearth to a Garmin GPS without using Windows.
First of all, is this possible? Anyone tried this?
Second: What do I need for this? What device, what (free) software for converting and transferring? Is any USB Garmin capable of doing this?
    Thanks alot!
    Walter

DianneS, Welcome to the discussion area!
It sounds that using google and babel are easier and better than the garmin software and hence there is no advantage in waiting . Is that correct?
I need to access my GPS data today so there is no advantage for me to wait for a promised product.
...do you know if the zumo 550 holds any advantage over other motorbike versions?
Sorry but I have no experience with the Zumo 550 nor any Garmin motorbike products. I use the above recommended software with the Garmin eTrex Venture Cx.
If the Zumo 550 is similar to the StreetPilot c530 there is very little data which can be transferred to/from the computer. About the only thing you can download is POI (points of interest). You do this using Garmin's POI Loader and there is a Mac version of that utility. I have not tested that utility.

  • Garmin GPS recognized?

I have a Garmin GPS nuvi 255W. I have used the Garmin WebUpdater in the past. Recently my MBP does not recognize the unit when I connect the USB. The Garmin unit come on indicating a connection between the unit and the computer but there is not indication of a connection in the "Finder" file. The GPS unit shows a computer/unit connection for about 1 min and then turns on and goes to the map. I have tried two different USB ports, which have been used with a TomTom unit and another computer but to no avail.  Any suggestions?

Sorry to bother all of you. After reading, what I wrote, I see that it is a Garmin unit problem and not computer related. What an idiot I am. In any case thanks for the opportunity to address this issue and then see my erro.

  • GPS Maps Outside of Phone Coverage when Traveling

*Is there anyway to download maps for your destination using a computer and then onto the iphone before you go?*
Most people need a map when they are traveling, not in their local area.
To download maps using the limited 3G network coverage while traveling is EXPENSIVE.
A lot of places just do not have 3G and using 2G to download maps on the fly is SLOW & EXPENSIVE.
Many places interesting places in the world do not have any phone coverage at all.
So how useful is the GPS function on the iphone if you are in an area where you cannot download a map.
Is there anyway to download maps for your destination using a computer and then onto the iphone before you go?

Perhaps you have not done much traveling. I have.
I am also very experienced at reading all types of maps, including
topographical maps on land and depth contour maps and so on at sea.
So map reading is not the problem for me.
Actually getting good maps, that are easy to use even from guide books is
quite difficult. It is not really convenient to have to carry a heavy
guidebook around every where. In some places the maps from guide books
have inadequate or incorrect coverage. In Japan or China it can be difficult to
come to grips with the calligraphy, sometimes there just aren't any road signs.
So a GPS map device becomes are very useful piece of kit. Unfortunately as much as I like Mac stuff and wanted the iPhone for this purpose, it is in its current
form not very useful for travelers.
The Nokia maps can be preloaded (so at least you can avoid expensive download costs) but the coverage is quite limited. Samsung have a new 16+16Gb GPS phone that with pre-purchased GPS maps could do the job.
Apple could fairly easily fix the iPhone GPS software so that you can preload all the Google maps for a country before you leave. After all you generally know where you are going. If Apple was to do this then I would get the iPhone
but until then I will keep looking for a better solution.

  • Mountain Mapping software - any for Macs - or does this mean Virtual PC?

    Hi
I am a keen hillwalker and would love to use the sort of software that Anquet and Memory map produce for PCs - you can plot out walks on maps, see the changes in height you'll cover - get waypoints for your GPS etc. However all the products I've found for the UK are Windows ones. Help!
    1. Does anyone know of UK mountain mapping software that runs on Macs?
    2. If not, do you think one of the memory map or anquet products might run on VPC? (I'm a bit worried they might be sooo slow...)
Finally, I have a copy of VPC, but to use it I have to register it on the web - but I'm scared to, as I can't set up antivirus protection until its registered. Am I worrying unnecessarily?
    Thanks for your help

  • Off-Road Mapping Software with offline maps - eg U...

Apologies if already posted -couldn't find it.
I need mapping software for the Nokia 710 Windows 7 that will show pre-downloaded maps (avoiding problems with no signal and data connection costs), preferably UK Ordnance Survey 1:50000 or similar. It would be neat if it could save waypoints for uploading and sharing. I see many such apps for Android and iPhone, but not for Windows. Nokia Maps currently fails on most counts.  Can anyone point me in the right direction, please? Thanks.

  • Why aren't there any English GPS maps for Japan?

I mean, why? There are GPS maps for almost every developed country, but for Japan there are none that i know of (neither Navteq nor Teleatlas, which are the two major cartography companies out there).
I've seen several Japanese GPS solutions, but they unfortunately don't have an English option. I've never seen a major company like TomTom or Garmin (among many others), offering a solution for that market.
So, what company does the cartography out there (Navteq or Teleatlas like), and why doesn't TomTom or Garmin use their data in order to develop an English GPS solution? There has to be some kind of logical explanation.
    Kind Regards.

Can you provide an official link for Garmin XT for the N8 and for Japan Road Navi 2.1?
As no doubt you were aware when posting Garmin Mobile Xt is now no longer available:http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-11034-00
Since this is the only way of getting navigation for Japan, Pakistan and Cyprus which Nokia have choosen to avoid providing for with Nokia Maps, presumably you would rather OP was left in ignorance of technical feasibility of it's use upon Symbian devices.
Whereas under your profile it says "Please do not contact me asking for assistance in a personal message (that includes bringing posts to my attention), you will not receive help from me in that way" I have always been happy to provide further guidance should user so request under such situations.

  • Option to choose default mapping software on Iphone

I would like to be able to choose the default mapping software, that will be used from the "contacts" app, to be Google maps, Garmin maps, or any other third party mapping software.  Currently IOS6 only allows for Apple maps as the default mapping software.
Apple maps dose not have Streetview, a next-gen mapping technology that covers 99.9% of US major roads.
MS windows allows the choosing of a default web browser. Perhaps it is time that IOS6 followed suite and allowed the choosing of a default mapping software.
This could be added to Settings==>General==>default maping software.

Google has allowed developers the necessary API's to launch Google Maps rather than Apple's Maps. This will obviously take time for developers to update their apps.
As far as Apple permitting Google Maps to become default, don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen. IMO, it will never happen.

    Hello,
For the N95 phone, can you install and keep up to date its GPS Navigation software so that it properly works anywhere in the USA as well as for Europe?
    Tom

hey tom,i think you could download the free map from NOKIA, and then the the GPS will works good, or the other way, you could download the Route66 Nav software for N95, it's good and i think it will be the best choice!
