Garritan Marching and Big Band
Hello all,
I have been beta testing Garritan's Marching and Big Band Instruments on my Intel iMac using GarageBand 3. Thought you all might like to hear a piece I came up with. Note: I did not do much in the way of plunger muting (though I could have). I just put this together in a few of hours. There is about 16 tracks. Three of them (piano, Jazz Bass, and Pop Drum)are GarageBand-native.

The bottom line is that has been one of Logic's most glaring "missing features" for years, in my book.
The problem stems from the fact that Logic can't separate the channels (or 'channelize') the volume and pan controls for the individual MIDI channels of a multitimbral virtual instrument. By contrast, Logic has no problem doing this with external MIDI modules. And other DAW's - I'm told - have no problem separating the volume commands for individual channels of a virtual instrument. But Logic "Pro" still can not.
So you have to set up a bunch of virtual 'aux' channels, route the various VI channels to the separate AUX's, then control or automate the volume of those aux channels separately from the 'master' VI. Personally I can't believe people don't complain more about what a needlessly awkward workaround this is, all to achieve the same basic functionality we've had in MIDI for almost 20 years now .
But that's the way it's always been done on Logic, and from the looks of it, there's no reason to expect it to change anytime soon.
Search the forums (or Kontakt's manual or Garritan's site) for info on how to set up numerous auxiliary outs, and that should get you going. There are also numerous tutorials and how-to's on this forum and others, which you can probably find if you search "multitimbral aux".
Lastly, some folks resort to automating volumes within the plugins, ie. adjusting the channel volume sliders on Kontakt's internal mixer while the sequence runs, then editing that automation later in Logic. Again, I think it's a kludgey workaround. But Kludgey Workarounds have always been a big part of the Logic Pro 'experience!'
Enjoy.

Garritan Jazz/Big Band and Logic
Hello. I've mostly used Jam Packs with Logic, I'm new to using another player within Logic, Kontakt is what comes with Garritan Jazz and Big Band. The issue I'm having is when you load a multi/ensemble from Kontakt into Logic, I can't seem to control the volumes separately. It seems to show up in the Logic mixer as "Inst 1" -- is this making sense? Sometimes I'm confused by all the tabs/choices in the mixer section too...but that's probably a different issue. Anyway, if you have any thoughts, I'd love to hear them. Thanks. Bob

Garritan Jazz & Big Band 3rd Edition
Does anyone know if Garritian Jazz & Big Band 3rd edition is compatible with Logic Pro X? Or, does anyone know of a good Jazz and Big Band Plug-in for Logic Pro X? Thank you
Yes, Garritan JABB3 works in Logic Pro X.

How to get good Big Band horn sounds?
Getting good live horn sounds such as trills on trumpet and sax seems impossible without a live player. Any advice of sample libraries to use with EXS?
G5 dual 2.0Ghz Mac OS X (10.3.9) 1.5 Gig ram/Presonus FireboxAs a horn player for 25 years, I have found this to be the most poorly represented area for samples that don't consist of licks and riffs. The best Big Band sounds I've heard to date is Garriton Jazz and Big Band.

For Pop/Rock/R&B, Kick *** Brass is solid and authentic.

Logic 8 with Garritan Jazz & Big Band
Hello
Anyone using the Garritan Jazz & Big Band Kontakt Plugins inside of Logic 8? If so have you run into any problems...especially memory problems. And how much ram are you running Logic 8 with in this situation? Your minimum ram requirements?
Thanks for answering...John
PS And how does your JAAB score work out in the Logic 8 Score Editor?I'm working just fine with both the GPO and JABB and Logic 8.01. I use the multi-instruments option which seems to help save RAM usage. This is in contrast to loading up each instrument individually with single instances of either the Kontakt 2 or the Kontakt 2 Player (which "powers" JABB and GPO). It seems like when I (and others) load up individual instances of Kontakt, RAM usage is significally increased.
There's been a number of discussions here (and on other Apple support bulletin boards) regarding this issue. The discussions are all worth the read if you have the time. However, utilizing the Multi-Instrument function seems to significantly keep down RAM usage (for me, anyway).

I am trying to find a sweet collection of jazz big band instruments for the EXS24; can anyone here recommend anything? All I've found of a specific collection is Garritan's which uses N.I. Kontact Player, and I don't wanna use Kontact! I don't! I DON'T! <dropping to the floor and turning blue>
For what its worth, I've seem to remember reading favourable reviews of First Call Horns - not sure about Captain Beefheart though!
Collections like this tend to include little bits that might be useful in a general way - if you have Melodyne you can create new things from them though..
It shouldn't be too difficult to find bits of solo avante garde sax on existing recordings that you could sample and re-arrange (yeah, I know....) -
Is there a Big Band radio stream?
No Big Band Folder present and I have looked buc annot find any Big Band Radio Stations available. Can we submit requests for a certain kind of music or station to be added to the iTunes radio server?

I wouldn't bother. That radio listing is only intended as a sample listing and has never been updated. -
Wifi connectivity - Yosemite and dual band routers (i.e. BT Home Hub)
This is working for me so far after all previous tips on other Discussions proved only to be temporary. This is the only one that enabled my MBP to accept password for the SSID.
From BT Home Hub - 2011!!
The BT Home Hub 4 and Hub 5 are dual band with two wireless frequencies for devices to connect to: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. On both Hubs, the default setting has the same network name (or SSID) for both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Connecting a typical 5GHz-capable device to this single SSID will automatically connect the device to both the 2.4 and 5Ghz frequency at the same time.
However, not all dual band devices behave the same way and some device software does not cope well with a single SSID for both frequencies.
As a result:
the device may not connect wirelessly to the Hub
it may not connect to 5GHz frequency even in the same room
the wireless connection might be intermittent
the wireless connection might be very slow
Devices where there are known to be problems include:
Some Apple devices including iPhone 5 and Apple TV
some Android smartphones
Xbox
For some devices you can solve this problem by having different network names (SSIDs) for the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz bands. To set this up, follow these steps:
Open your web browser on a device connected to the Hub and go to bthomehub.home. This will open the Hub Manager
Click on Advanced Settings and enter your Hub admin password when prompted. Unless you've changed it, you'll find the default Hub password on the Hub settings card
Click on Continue to Advanced Settings
Click on Wireless
Click on 5GHz
Change 'Sync with 2.4 Ghz' to No
Change the 'Wireless SSID' to a new name (we recommend just adding '5GHz' to the end of the existing SSID name so you'll know which one is which)
Click Apply to save the changes
After a few minutes you should see two BT Home Hub SSIDs in the list of networks on your device. All of your devices will still automatically connect to the original SSID name, which will be the 2.4GHz.
If you have existing dual band devices you want to connect to 5GHz only, you'll need to connect them to the 5GHz SSID that you've renamed. AND RESTART the hub - PJ
Note- Even though wireless speeds at 5GHz can be significantly faster than 2.4GHz, the range of a 5GHz connection is not as good. As a result, you may need your device closer to your Hub (than you'd need to when using the 2.4GHz SSID) to get the best performance possible."Sadly it didn't last...
I just posted this on BT Home Hub users forum. and the big Yosemite/wifi Discussion
"Sorry to awaken this topic from the dead....
I am using HH5a, opted in to FON, and Os10.10 MacBookPro
I have no problem whatsoever connecting and staying connected to 2.4ghz
I struggle since OS10.10 to either connect or stay connected to 5ghz
A persistent issue with trying to connect to 5ghz is the response "invalid password" Only occasionally in the past 3 months has this not been a problem
the app WifiExplorer shows today that the only other networks on the same channels as my networks are the FON wifiX - both of which I presume are using my router/wifi as when I manually change channels these move with me.
Signal strength on 2.4 ghz is between 77 - 85, 5ghz 80+/- 1
Noise and signal noise ratio a lot higher on 2.4 than 5
(There is lots more info on wifi explorer but I dont know its relevance/meaning)
I have tried using manual channel selection and Smart Wireless and can't see much difference in 5ghz connection
Given a choice I would prefer to stay in FON but if there is overwhleming evidence that these hot spot networks are affecting mine, I would consider opting out. Views/ guidance please. Thanks. And a Happy New Year too."
IS ANYBODY ELSE using BT Home Hub5a having this same issue? I BELIEVE it has largely if only been since upgrading to 10.10.1 but can't swear to it.
IS IT SIGNIFICANT THAT SOMETIMES THE PASSWORD TO 5GHZ network is accepted and other times not? -
Arranging Big Band Charts with Score Editor
Ahhh, the score editor is so untuitive. The way it's programmed, so that you have to space the note just right to get the desired result. And sometimes ya gotta switch the notes and try again and then retry... Ayayayaya. Well, anyways, my question is: Is there a way I can prefrerize the score editor so that the notes/rests I select are put in, and that I can make my own ties (the ties are reallly frusturating). I'm arranging a chart for my big band, so.... go Logic!
Cheers!
-Tad-Have partially answered my own question- have worked out how to change note sizes to the smaller cue-type display, not quite sure how to designate them non-playing though still appearing in the score though.

Has anyone had any success writing for a big band in logic and then printing out the parts with a satisfactory result?
I know that Logic can do it, but just wondering if it works well enough for a professional level project
ThanksI've done full orchestra scores in Logic. I doesn't have the look of good Sibelius or Finale, but if all the parts are already in, sometimes it is faster. The notation is fine and readable - much better than a lot of the handwritten charts I have seen over the years. If you need falls, shakes, scoops, graphic wah wahs and other stuff, you might need a real notation program (it might be there, I never looked for that stuff).
Goodluck.

I got a new Macbook pro in March and transferred all of my old files into the new macbook from my old one. But ever since then, my iPhoto just does not open up. It says 'error' every time I try to open it, but I am still able to attach the iPhotos saved to emails. Help! How do I get my iPhoto back?
Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem. Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page. Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.) -
Email and big wifi problems.
Email and big wifi problems.
Why does it take 6 minutes to send a photo attachment when my iphone 4 will do it in 30 to 40 seconds ?
Why will my email account be recognised and log on only half the time?
Why does the wifi keep dropping out?
Why does the speed and signal vary when I'm sitting two feet away from by wifi router?
All settings in my phone have been reset twice as per advice from vodaponeThanks very much, jjgraphics. I will grit my teeth and try India once more, as you suggest, and then get in touch with the moderators.

The App Store says I have updates for I-Photo and Garage Band. When I try to update I get the following message: You have updates available for other accounts To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it." Both apps came with my computer and as far as I know I only have one Apple account. Any thoughts? Thanks.
KarenThanks for you reply. I'm 99% positive that I'm using the user id and password that I used to set up my computer. That's why I'm stumped. I read the solution someone else suggested (type your user name without @gmail and create a new password. When I tried it, I was asked for my birthday. It didn't recognize it. I know I got my birthday correct. Oh well...

My MacBook Pro 17" early 2011(built March) and my new OCZ sata III 6G are not working together, when is Apple going to admit there is a problem with the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. In System Information it says "Link Speed: 6 Gigabit" which is sata III and in my MacBook Pro it does not work.
Now MacBook Pro 17" early 2011 built May onward do not have this problem it was fixed in the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. (So there is a problem). Cam I have my MacBook Pro fixed please. After biting the bullet and ordering more RAM, my computer now is working a ton better. So that must have been the main issue. With 8 GB RAM, I can now even run Parallels fluidly (better than my work PC!) where before simple things like logging in to my MBP after reboot could take forever.
The place I went to had several other people getting RAM upgrades at the same time as me, so between this and other comments I've seen in discussions here and elsewhere on the Internets, I take it to mean that either Apple should bump up the base RAM on its new machines, and/or stop charging so much for additional RAM.
I refused to believe a Pro machine bought with Lion installed would come with too little RAM for light to medium usage, but it was apparently the case. I'll mark this as a correct answer and hope some other poor soul will come across this thread and be helped by it.
