Gateway Assistant Not Seeing NIC

Hi,
I'm converting a G5 into an OS X Tiger Server and am having an issue with the Gateway Assistant not seeing the NIC that is installed in the G5. As I step through the screens, I get to one that asks to select the LAN interface and the built in ethernet is greyed out. The only other option is Firewire, which isn't what I want.
Is it not possible to run the Gateway Assistant with a single ethernet interface? Must there be two, one for the LAN and one for the WAN?
Any help appreciated.

Well that would defeat the point of the gateway assistant, this sets up NAT with translates traffic from one nic to another, so having only one nic would not work, it is persuming that the builtin ethernet is your external card which you wish to apply NAT to , thus u need another card to forward traffic too, as you only have the firewire port left, thats the only one available.

  • Migration assistant not seeing thunderbolt connection

Trying to migrate files between 2012 IMac and new Macbook pro, but it says it will take 77 hrs and i need to use thunderbolt cable to expedite......but I am using a thunderbolt cable between the two....does it not see the connection/how do i rectify that....how do i stop the migration to enable the fix i hope someone suggests

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010, none of which have ThunderBolt. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Why is Migration Assistant not seeing Time Machine backup?

Had year old iMac with Snow Leopard and recently was lucky enough to have it replaced with a brand new model with Lion. Had the previous iMac backed up on external drive with Time Machine.
I know I can't restore from that Time Machine backup since I am now on Lion but shouldn't I be able to migrate my old user account from the Snow Leopard Time Machine backup to the new Lion system? The Lion Migration Assistant will not recogize or show the drive or backup from Time Machine though even though it is mounted in the Finder in Lion.
    Any ideas?

I just had a similar problem to this. I have a MacBook Pro (Lion) that has been backed up to an attached USB Time Machine disk that was formatted on this same machine. I had a major crash, and had to reinstall Lion, and my Time Machine backup drive did not show up in the list. I do see several drives on my network, but not the locally attached USB drive. I rebooted and tried several time, no joy.
The backup drive passes all disk tests, and shows up when plugged in to other machines, and even shows up in the boot menu (but will not boot) when the MacBook Pro starts. And it has the secret flag file (if you do not know, the drive MUST have a zero length file titled ".com.apple.timemachine.supported" (note the leading .) at the root of the drive or the drive will not be recognized) and it should just work. It did backup to it just fine, but I cannot restore.
I finally made this work (I think) by actually getting another external USB drive, formatting it, and then using another machine to copy the Time Machine backup from the old drive to the new drive. I added the myster flag file to the new drive (see above) and connected it to the MacBook Pro. This time, it did recognize it.
I am trying to do a restore now, and looks like it should work just fine. What a pain in the butt.
I would love to hear from Apple what causes this. There must be an easier solution than to spend 6 hours copying a full back from one 2 TB drive to another! SIgh!
UPDATE: OK, it showed up as a restore disk in the "restore utility" in the energency partition, but I need to install a new OS (there was some curruption) and after installing a New OS, and getting to the migration screen, once again, this new drive does not show up.  ARGHHHHhhhhhhh

  • Migration Assistant not seeing OS X Server time machine backups

    Hello,
I use my OS X Server box as a time machine server, to which my other computers back up, just like you would to a time capsule.  However, I now want to use one of those backups to restore to a new computer.  When I try to use migration assistant to do this, it sees my server machine, but it says there are no backups on it.  I noticed on the hard drive the server uses to back up the clients, the sparse bundles are saved under a "Shared Items" folder, unlike what happens if you do time machine backups connected directly to an external disc with USB, where the backups directory is at the top level directory.
Any ideas what could be going on here?  As it is it looks like no time machine backups managed by my server machine are usable by migration assistant.

In the sidebar of a Finder window on the client, select the icon representing the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) At the top level of the volume are folders with these names, among others:
    Applications
    Library
    System
Enter Time Machine and select the most recent snapshot, which is behind the frontmost window. Are those folders present in the snapshot?

  • Gateway Assistant - My Changes Afterward Not Working

    Folks;
I have used the Gateway Assistant (GA) and it does ALMOST what I need.
It doesn't let me have any say so in the IP assignments and I cannot re-IP the network for GA's sake... So I have to make IP changes afterwards.
I have 2 NICs and I want: NAT; DHCP and VPN -> looks like GA is a good fit.
I let 'er rip and sure enough when I cable in a single machine and use the DHCP server I get an address in the default range and can connect the the VPN client as it is configured by GA. I can see a web page. Cool.
So now I have to change the IP settings. The BuiltIn ENet is fine - GA leaves it alone. It's the second NIC that GA messes with.
In Server Admin I stop DHCP, NAT, FIrewall, and VPN.
In DHCP I change the range to be in my 192.168.x.a - 192.168.x.b range and change the Router to my desired: 192.168.x.y. I also change the NameServers to be relevant.
In VPN, I change the IP range to 192.168.x.c - 192.168.x.d, making sure it does not intersect with the DHCP range.
In Firewall, I create a new AddressGroup (192.168.x-net) and set then edit the 'Services' for this address group to be 'Allow all traffic'. I then delete the superfulous '192.168.2-net' group.
Now finally there is the SystemPrefernces where the IP of the NIC itself needs to be from the default assignment of 192.168.2.1 to my address of 192.168.x.y.
I set both the IP and Router address to 192.168.x.y just like GA had done.
I reboot the machine and then turn the services back on.
I have a single machine cabled to the NIC and DHCP and VPN will both work.
I get an address and a VPN connection.
BUT (you knew that was coming, right?)
That's the end of the road. No ping, no web page, no printer.
What have I forgotten to do that GA is doing when it sets it to working?
My gut says its a firewall issue but my head hurts from the banging it has taken today in dealing with this.
(My manager's stress level ain't so great either....)
I have not used 'changeip' cause I'm not sure it is needed and I'm not sure it works on en1.
Somebody have mercy on me, please?
    Steve

    It's probably a firewall issue.
Turn on logging of denied packets to see whats blocked.
Depending on what rules you have there might be a need for a rule allowing traffic in from the ppp0 interface (VPN).
If you want rules to allow everything from LAN/VPN in and automatically be creating temporary rules for returning packets you could enter it yourself in the Advanced firewall settings (it's a bit tricky but can be done) or by using Terminal to add it (to the rule list not changed by the firewall GUI).
Such a rule needs to end with: "check-state", something like :
allow ip from <LAN IP range> in via en1 check-state
allow ip from <LAN IP range> in via ppp0 check-state
or for all interfaces at once:
allow ip from <LAN IP range> in check-state
(using a low row number to get the rule near the top of the list - beginning)
And/or for answers to DNS requests returning from Internet (if you are not using you own server for DNS) you might need a rule: allow 53 from any to <LAN IP range> udp in (I might have entered these in the wrong order - you figure it out) at least if "check-state" is not present.
Haveing matching hostname - IP-number - DNS name is important for some services, forward and reverse lookup should work.
I usually leave the router field empty on the LAN interface.

  • Migration assistant screw up, Mac Pro not seeing wifi/TC

    Hi
I've been using a MacBookPro (MBP) for almost 5 years now, with a 1TB Time Capsule (TC1) using Time Machine (TM). I am the sole user, HDD is 270Gb used/50Gb free; using Mavericks, v10.9.2. On Friday, I used Sophos anti virus home edition, to scan the MBP. It comes up with no threats identified, and I uninstall Sophos.
Yesterday I took delivery of the Mac Pro (MP) with the 3Tb Time Capsule (TC3).
I booted up the MP, with the TC3. I did not, at this stage, connect the TC3 to the internet. Using TM, I backed up the MP. TC3 flashes the amber light.
Using Migration Assistant (MA) I tried to copy the MBP to the MP, 3 times. This did not work. At the point where the target machine has listed what is available to transfer, I click Continue and MA on the MP closes, on the MBP it says something like connection lost. The screen where this happens, lists 3 items available to transfer Application, Documents/Date and Computer settings; with a content of 128kb indicated, which is clearly wrong! The connection was an Ethernet cable direct from the MBP to the MP.
At this stage, I decide to connect the MP to the internet using TC3, there's some settings to be changed on TC3 using Airport Utility and it connects ok. TC3 has a steady green light.
I run 2 software updates on the MP. I surf the net briefly, to make sure it's ok.
I try again to use MA. This time, the dialgoue box listing what's available to transfer is different. There are 2 or 3 more options, colour is present, the font is different, the box is about the same size. The MP would not let me take any screenshots as all other applications are closed when MA is running. I don't think it gave me the size of what was being transferred, but it looked more hopeful, so I Continue and the transfer starts, with an estimated time of 33 minutes.
    The transfer completes.
The MBP, as you would expect, has not changed, the MP has, but not in the way I expected. Applications appear to have all transferred (without checking them), no Documents/data and no Downloads appear to have transferred; I ticked to transfer everything.;I know I can reconnect the Ethernet cable and simply copy the data across.
But the main problem appears to be, the MP does not see the wifi.
    Ethernet cable is removed.
The MP asks if I want to give permission to eeEvents manager (I presume calendar related) and say yes. It also asks if I want to install a Java run time, no.
In System preferences/Network it tells me a new Thunderbolt bridge has been found and asks if it's ok, to accept it, yes. It tells me the Ethernet cable is disconnected, rightly so; it says Airport is not connected.
I open Airport utility, no sign of the TC1 or TC3 despite it searching. Apart from TC1, the MP, MBP and TC3 are sat within a couple of feet of each other.
I turn on TC1/TC3 (separately and not at the same time, then at the same time), but the MP does not see them. I've reset TC3, rebooted the MP and still the MP does not see it.
I don't get any errors or warnings coming up.
I think my next option is to try and reset the MP to the factory settings, but this won't work, as I've no internet connection to reinstall OS X. No disc is sent with the MP.
Any suggestions as to what to try? Otherwise, I'll be off to the Apple Store tomorrow for a One to One!! :-(
Thanks for any help and Happy Mother's Day!!

Take the MP and connect it via ETH to your main router.
Restart the machine holding down command option R, you should see a spinning globe
Open disk utility and reformat the MP HD as Mac journaled
Then install OSX on this drive

  • I'm attempting to transfer files, address book, etc from an external hard drive to my new Mac-mini using migration assistant.  The external drive is showing up on my desktop but Migration Assistant is not seeing the drive when searching for devices

I'm attempting to migrate files, address book, maile, etc to my new Mac Mini using an external hard drive and Migration assistant.  I followed the instructions on using Migration Assistant to do this but Migration Assistant is not seeing the external drive, which is displayed on my desktop

I've been chasing this problem all afternoon. I had to reformat my internal drive on my MBP and reinstall Mountain Lion   Start up assistant wouldn't see my extrnal drive with the Time Machine files on it.  After many tries, I skipped the restore there and let the system boot.  I could see my external drive from Finder and the files looked OK.  I was told to use Migration Assistant and it had the same problem.
I saw a hint on one of these posts that the icon that you see and is label Macintosh HD is actually your backup disk and it is telling you that it has a copy of your internal Macintosh HD.  I went ahead and told it to continue and it started to restore my apps, settings, and documents.  It's been going for a couple of hours, and is close to being done.  I expect to see my old system restored when it is finished.
Wish that Apple would put some type of note that it is seeing the backup. That is most confusing and seems to be a problem for lots of users.
It's been a month or so since your post  Did your get it to work?

  • Migration Assistant does not see my WD backup drives!

Apple recalled my Seagate HD and I just had it replaced with a new HD at the Genius Bar. I picked up my iMac today and am now attempting to RESTORE with my backup to my new (internal) HD. However, when I used the Setup Assistant, it did not see either of my external backup drives. I continued through the setup process and thought I'd try the Migration Assistant. Even THAT did not see either of my back up drives. When I use Time Machine to RESTORE, I navigate to the latest folder but the Restore button is greyed out.
The drives are both on my desktop and they work in the Finder with no issue, I've repaired and verified both and they check out just fine. I've seen this problem in other posts in the Apple forums and elsewhere on the web, and I've tried the suggestions with no success. Some I haven't tried because they refer to Lion—I have 10.6.8.
BTW: I had a HD fail on my MacBook a year ago and after the new HD was installed, I ran the Setup Assistant on it and everything went smoothly (same BU drive manufacturer) when restoring with the backup.
Do I need to go back to Genius now (no no no!) or call Apple Support (yikes!)?
I am going MAD without my Mac!
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Thanks—katorama

    Thanks sanjampet.
I called Apple support and the tech had me make a bogus account with a different user account name. I then logged into the bogus account and ran Migration Assistant. MA cannot override while logged into your main account, thus the bogus one is needed.
Turns out that while in MA, you will *not* see your backup drive in the list when it comes to the "select a drive" screen. It wants you to select a drive to migrate to, not from. Once you select the "Macintosh HD" and Continue, Migration Assistant will locate your latest backup and restore it to your new HD.
Once the migration is complete (this takes a while of course), log out of the bogus account, then log back into your main account. You can delete the bogus account.
    That's it!

  • I do not see the DAQ Assistant Express on Functions Input palette.

Software config: Windows XP machine, Traditional NI-DAQ 7.4.4 for PCI 6602. I do not see the DAQ Assistant express on Functions>>Input palette. I get error message when I place the Instrument I/O assistant on the block diagram:-" Measurement and Automation Explorer or Instrument I/O Assistant not installed correctly. Please install from LabVIEW CD". I've tried uninstalling, re-installing driver and rebooting my computer several times.

    Hello PJ-SJM,
The DAQ Assistant Express VI installs with the NI-DAQmx Driver and not Traditional NI-DAQ.  The good news is that the PCI-6602 is supported in both Traditional NI-DAQ and NI-DAQmx.  Check this KnowlegeBase article to find out what version of NI-DAQmx you need and then search the Drivers and Updates page for to find the version you need.  Once you download and install the driver you should see the DAQ Assistant Express VI on your functions pallet.
The Instrument I/O Assistant is not for use with DAQ cards, it is for using other communication protocol like serial or GPIB.  However, if you need this you can install the Device Driver CD and it should work after that.  Note:  The device driver CD that came with LabVIEW should also contain the correct version of NI-DAQmx.
I hope this helps, and have a great Friday!

  • Migration Assistant Does Not See Attached External Disk

I just purchased a MacBook Air to replace an aging MacBook Pro.  Both are running the latest Mountain Lion (10.8.3).  I want to move my files from the MBP to the MBA using Migration Assistant.  I first tried doing this over wi-fi, but when I learned it would take more than 99 hours, I chose to cancel the operation.
So I connected a new Seagate HD to the MBP and configured Time Machine to back up to it.  I let Time Machine run all day, creating hourly updates after the initial backup.  I then disconnected the drive, attached it to the MBA and rebooted.  I ran Migration Assistant and chose to migrate from a Time Machine backup.  However, Migration Assistant does not see the disk.  Yet the disk is mounted on the desktop, I can read and write to it, and I can see the Time Machine backups.  Only Migration Assistant seems unable to recognize the disk.
This isn't the first time I've had problems with MA (see my posting history).  When it works, it's terrific - my new computer has all the settings and preferences as the old.  My applications are all registered and operational.  So I'm very frustrated that I can't get it to work with my new MBA.  It really does diminish the experience of getting a new computer.  That, plus I don't want to spend days and weeks moving things over manually, re-installing, etc.
C'mon, Apple.  Why is Migration Assistant so difficult?  I'd chalk it up to user error, but this many times?

So, finally after fourten hours of unattended "migration," I let it continue overnight and in the morning found that the time remaining had not moved a minute.  I canceled MA and found that not one iota of data had transferred.
As far as I'm concerned, Migration Assistant ranks lower on the Apple success list than Open Doc, Newton, Pink and Taligent.
Now I have to manually install software I want to use on the MBA, apply licenses, and all the other stuff I would expect from Windows.
    NOT happy.

  • Migration assistant does not see my time machine disk

I had an issue with my hard disk on my imac in which I had to re-format and reinstall the OS. Since 10.7 is not available as a "rescue reinstall disk", I had to reinstall 10.6. When that finished, the install asked if I would like to transfer my stuff from Time Machine. I said "yes". Unfortunately, my time machine disk does not show up! Migration Assistant thinks my "macintosh HD" system disk is the only disk available as the time machine backup. So I skipped migration. I went ahead and did all of the OS upgrades to get back to 10.7.3. I re-connected all external disks (I have 4-the time machine disk included) and tried migration assistant again. The only disk migration assistant still thinks is available as the time machine backup is the macintosh HD system disk, not the one called "Time Machine Backup". Time machine backup is a western digital 2TB usb 2.0 disk.
    So....
I decided this morning to re-do everything again (since I still could not get my data back). Guess what?!?! the same thing is happening! Migration Assistant thinks that the macintosh HD is the time machine disk and does not see any others - even though the disk is there and mounted!
Please help! I would like my data back, but I am not able to pay Apple at the Apple store or a phone call to them for help!
    Thanks!
    Diana

Those are your backups.  Migration Assistant shows the name of the disk and system that were backed-up, not the disk they're on.  It will not show the disk you're running from.
See the tan box in Using Migration Assistant on Lion.

  • Mavericks Migration assistant does not see time machine backup of older Lion Mac

Used to have a Macbook Pro. It was stolen (circa July 2014). Luckily I had up to date Time Machine Backups. The Macbook Pro was completely up to date running the latest OSX Lion (circa July 2014) when stolen.
Bought a new Macbook Air just now (Mar 2015).
Plugged in the old Mac's Time Machine Backup Disk, Migration Assistant doesn't see the old Mac's Backups.
So I setup the new Macbook Air without restoring.
Plugged in old backup drive, am able to navigate to old Mac's Time Machine Backups.
Tried running Migration Assistant many time , but still it does not see the the  old Mac's Time Machine Backups. (although they continue to show in the drive if I navigate to it)
Pls help so I can migrate the old Mac to the new Mac!!!!

    Thanks Turbostar.
Well, I think there should be solution to use TIME CAPSULE restore as it should I mean I bought Time Capsule because it is easy to use and I really do not want to solve any issues or make any workarounds.
I think APPLE should resolve this ASAP. Meantime maybe anybody knows any trick about this issue?

I want to transfer data from my old macbook from 2008 to my newer MacBook Pro from 2012.  The MBP sees the old MB, but the old MB is not seeing the MBP- just keeps "searching for other computers" forever.  I got a 9 to 6 pin firewire connector to link them, as instructed at the Apple Store.   Tried it without the cable just using wireless and same result.  Suggestions?

I have just downloaded a trial version of Photoshop Elements onto my Mac Book Pro (10.9.4).  The installation to my hard drive went fine so I attempted to use Elements on an existing Photoshop file.  I did not see the Elements option in my filter menu and am uncertain as to how to "add" the Elemnts to my existing filter choices.  Please advise.

I'm sorry but it's very hard to understand what you mean. What filter menu? In which program? Do you mean you're trying to use PSE as an external editor with some other asset management program? Which one?

    Hi annerose,
This problem has appeared in a few other threads. It's caused by installing Release 2 Raptor over Release 1 Raptor without first deinstalling Release 1 Raptor . So what you need to do is:
    1) Back up any important Raptor files, e.g. connections etc.
    2) Remove the existing Raptor Rel 1 installation folder
    3) Install Raptor Rel 2
    Hope this helps
