Gateway laptop dvd/cd drive

Help!! I have a Gateway laptop M685-E. The computer doesn't recognize the dvd/cd drive. When looking at the device manager there's a small yellow exclamation mark on the drive. This happened
once before and a Tech was able to walk me through it to fix the problem, but now there's no support available. Any advice would be appreciated!!

The yellow exclamation point means quite a few things. First of all the drivers could have got lost in another installation process. Second of all, there could be some kind of hardware conflict with another newly installed driver thats really slowing things down.

  • Possible to use DVD-RW drive from Asus laptop as external drive for S10?

I just purchased a Lenovo S10 netbook, which of course does not have a built in DVDRW.  I have an older Asus laptop with a removeable DVD-RW drive.  Is it possible to get some sort of case to turn it into a USB external drive?

the links that BaileyMoto posted will work for most laptop dvd/cd drives.  i've got one, and it works great with an nec drive in it.  only takes one cable for power and data, so you don't use up both ports on your computer.
only the newer laptop cd/dvd drives are sata.  your old drive from your asus should work fine in that enclosure.  the first link is for the board that comes in the enclosure that's in the second link.

  • Laptop DVD Drive Disappears in Vista

PROBLEM: As soon as you put a CD in the drive, the drive letter disappears.  The drive also disappears from the device manager
MODEL: HP laptop with Nvidia chipset (dv6748us)
Have Vista 32bit with SP2 and all other updates installed. Installed latest BIOS and chipset drivers from HP’s site. Laptop has an IDE drive interface. I tried a CDROM and it works, but tried multiple DVDRW and DVDROM drives and none work.USB DVD drive works. No filter stuff in the registry. Putting it to sleep does not bring it back. Scanning for hardware changes in the device manager does not find it again. Only comes back after reboot.
No option to change IDE/AHCI setting in the BIOS.
I did a factory restore and it still does the same thing.
I tried doing a clean install of Vista from a DVD, but as soon as Vista setup appears it says something like "A driver for the DVD/CD drive is missing" Please inset a disc with the correct drivers.  I tried downloading NVidia chipset/RAID/AHCI drivers from Nvidia's site and from HP and loading them, but to no avail.
Any other suggestions besides just using a USB drive from now on?

Same exact problem here but also note that neither the webcam nor the DVDROM is found in the Device Manager.  Also BOIs wont allow changes to info.  Recently updated to F.32 with the same problem.

    Hi,
Follow the procedure on the link below to create a bootable Ubuntu CD and follow the steps in Part 3 to 'Try it' to see if this OS will run from the CD without the need to install on your HDD.  This will show whether the problem is with Windows or a Hardware problem with the optical drive.

  • Lenovo 3000 N200 Laptop (0687-75B) has no DVD-RW drive detected under SATA in Vista Ultimate.

I use the Windows Vista Ultimate DVD (with Auto-activation) to install OS on the Lenovo 3000 N200 Laptop, however, no DVD-RW drive after successful OS installation. I have try both compatibility or AHCI mode but the same result occurs. (Both Windows updated and Lenovo update OK)
When I install Windows Ultimate with choosing internet activation, DVD-RW drive can be found.
    Anybody has idea?

    Hi Duck3,
Thankyou for the website. I actually went on this one: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2006/02/22/troubleshoot-fix-laptop-video-problems/
Check out the Laptop LCD screen is solid white color example. This is what happens to my screen and sometimes the 2nd example happens also. I'm also thinking its the cable because whenever it does happen, I find that adjusting the position of the lid (opening the lid and closing the lid) fixes the problem. Also, one example on the other website said to try touch around the borders of the screen and see what happens - Touching around the borders does nothing.
    I'm thinking cable.
I will try replace the cable after I buy new hinges and let you know how I go.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
If I restart the laptop in the base, the DVD/CD is available.  When I undock and then re-dock later, the DVD/CD drive is not available.
How do I make it available after re-docking?
    Thanks,

    Thanks for the input.
Forgot to mention that my DVD/CD drive is a TSST Corp. CDDVDW TS-L632H ATA device and the thread I was directed to was for a different make. Sorry for any confusion.
Is it the same problem with more than one make and the fix is the same for all makes?

It's probable that the CD 'side' of the combo drive has failed.  That you cannot boot from the recovery CD is pretty much proof of the failure.

  • DVD/CDRW drive not working - Tecra A4

Hi, I have a problem with my Tecra A4.
My DVD CDRW drive is not working properly (Power is there, but it doesn't show up on the system), I have temporary installed a DVDRW drive from my HP laptop which is working fine.
I tried to run my recovery disc (never used it before), but nothing happens (press and hold C on start up). Will this only run with the correct drive installed or am I doing something wrong?
p.s. I bought this second hand but it is new. It had a damaged screen which I've replaced
    Julian

If the old drive will not read the medias so its possible damage.
You should know that not every drive is compatible with the unit because of the master/slave/csel settings.
You have said that the pressing of the C button doesnt allow you to boot up from the drive.
In such case I would recommend to enter the BIOS and there you could change the booting order.
However, this all tip will only works if the new drive is compatible and supported

dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk, what can I do?

Well I was able to obtain a work around download of Flash and it installed fine but Firefox tells me it needs updating so I go out, thinking I'm "IN" finally to update it and I get that issue of not being able to get the update for it.  It's a regular laptop, not a touch screen or one of those new fangled ones for todays world.  In fact it's a refurb so it's probably origin date was a year or so ago before all this MS stuff took off fully.  So not understanding why I'm feeling like I'm being BLOCKED from getting the updated Flash I need and desire.  If I click on the little "X" and tell it to ignore the warning the vid will play just fine but don't want to have to do that every time.  Must be a better way.
Again, I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum, getting this posted in the Flash forum was my desire but the way Adobe has this set up I just couldn't figure it out.  I belong to ALLOT of forums and most are pretty straight forward but this one is confusing!

  • After downloading iTunes 11 my DVD/CD drive is gone, have tried every suggestion with regard to registry fixes, nothing has worked and it is still completely gone...what do I do?

Have seen this for the past few years and it has finally hit my laptop.  I downloaded and installed the newest version of iTunes and now my DVD/CD drive has not only stopped working, but is completely disappeared.  I have tried all suggestions that I could find and it is gone.

  • How to install iTunes so that it doesn't effect DVD-CD drive drivers on PC

I have a new Dell laptop Inspiron 1525 that I installed the latest version of iTunes on. When I installed iTunes it knocked out my DVD-CD drive. Dell techs helped me to reinstall drivers for my DVD CD drive - which then worked, but, this corrupted iTunes & registry so that CD import and burning drivers were lost. Got a window message upon starting iTunes to this effect and instruction to reinstall iTunes. Reinstalled iTunes and lost my DVD - CD drive again! Dell helped me to get DVD CD drive back again, but I had the same trouble with iTunes again. Does anyone know how I can get my iTunes and my DVD-CD drive to get along?

how about changing the drive letter for the DVD drive? Right click My Computer, goto Manage, then select disk management. change the drive letter there. bear in mind that any programs that would call to the DVD drive will get confused since you changed it's drive letter but you can always point it to the right drive.

  • DVD RW drive not reading discs

Hey guys, I have a G61-210CA (HP Laptop) and the DVD RW drive no longers reads discs.  I have tried running the Mr Fix it tool which could not repair the problem.  I have tried uninstalling device from device manager and reinstalling it.  I have removed the upper and lower limits in an effort to solve the problem.  I am still having the same issue.  When I put in a disc it does not recognize disc.  The light comes on and the drive spins, it is just unable to read it.  Any suggestions?

    Replace the defective drive.

Corresponding drivers r up to date.. I even tried uninstall and then restart and then let my laptop install the required driver automatically. I've tried everything I could find on some forums.

    Plz assist me..
I will be waiting for ur kind reply.
    Thank u so much.

The upper and lower filter thing only applies if the drive is not showing up at all in the Device Manager. If it appears as a drive and will perform any function at all, then it is likely a hardware issue. One way you can be sure is to try to boot from a bootable DVD such as a Windows 7 install Disk. If the computer will not boot from such a disk then it is apparent the hardware is defective, not the Windows software because the problem exists even before Windows loads.
The drive has multiple lasers and it is possible for one to go out but not the others.  The drive is easily replaced. See below:
