Gateway Server losing modem's DHCP

I'm running an Intel-based Mac Pro with Tiger Server as a gateway connected directly to a DSL modem on Ethernet Port 1 and to the rest of the downstream network on Ethernet Port 2. Every 2 weeks or so, the server loses its IP address (as supplied by the modem's DHCP) and internet connection with it. Setting the IP manually doesn't restore the connection. The only way to get my connection back is to reboot the server. We've tried replacing the modem, but it the problem still crops up consistantly every 2 weeks or so. If any one here has ideas of things to try, I'd appreciate it.
Oh, and it's a Siemens SpeedStream 4100 B ADSL modem.

I'm having the same problem. In my case though, the modem (a Motorola cable modem) is disconnecting every 20 minutes or so. Again, the only way to get a connection back is by rebooting. This used to happen every two weeks or so, but now it's worse. I've tried replacing the network cables (didn't work), I've had the modem diagnosed (they say everything is fine), I've tried swapping the network connections (use ethernet port 2 to connect to the net instead of ethernet port 1, also didn't work). The only insight I've got is that just before or after the disconnect (I'm not sure when) I get this in the system logs:
launchd: Server 0 in bootstrap 1103 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/lookupd"[112]: exited abnormally: Hangup
I would also appreciate any help anyone can give. Thanks.

  • Remote Desktop "Bypass RD gateway server for local addresses" no longer working in Windows 8

    Hi,
After installing windows 8, it seems like the "Bypass RD gateway server for local addresses" is no longer working.
In Windows 7, when the option is checked, I could have the server name set always and the client will automatically detect whether to use the RD gateway or not. For example, from my house, if I am connecting to a computer at my work, which requires
the RD gateway, it will automatically pops up the dialog for authentication method. However, if I connect to a computer in my home network, it will just automatically connects without asking authentication for the RD gateway.
However, after installing windows 8, this does not seem to work as expected anymore. The option is checked but the Windows Security dialog pops up in both situations and so i have to either save the rdp file locally and pin it to the taskbar or switch between
disabling and enabling the RD gateway whenever I need to connect to different machines.
Is this a regression in Windows 8? Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?
    Thanks

Another way to resolve this issue for me, beside of configuring RDP to connect directly to server also on unmanaged network, will be to turn the "wifi" subnet in a managed network, as the "wired" subnet is.
The differences between thoses to subnets, dynamically assigned by the same DHCP server, are:
The "wifi" is in a private IP range, the "wired" is in a public IP range
There's an ACL on the "wifi" subnet, not on the "wired"
The next step is to compare frames send/received when on the two networks. Something will likely tell for the network to be managed.
Beside, I'm still searching informations about NLA, which is responsible for setting a nework as managed or not.
    Here are some clues:

  • Server 2012 NPS NAP DHCP for VPN

I have setup a server with DHCP and NPS and configured NAP DHCP.
DHCP has 1 scope and the default scope options 003 router, 005 DNS server and 015 Domain Name (domain.com).
Further In DHCP i created a DHCP policy so it assigns a different 005 DNS server and 015 Domain Name (restricted.domain.com) to non-compliant clients. NPS/NAP DHCP is working (all is setup health, shv, gpo etc.. Health Validator is only checking if firewall
is runnning) so when i connect a client with firewall i get a normal IP from the scopt with the scope options and domain suffix domain.com. When i disable the firewall i get an IP from the DHCP scope, no gateway, subnet 255.255.255.255 and domain suffix restricted.domain.com
so all works well and as NAP DHCP should work.
Now i have an seperate RRAS server configured as VPN server and configured my DHCP/NPS server as an Radius Authentication Provider. Also a DHCP relay agent is configured in RRAS
On my DHCP/NPS server i configured my RRAS server as a Radius Client (nap-capable).
    My questions:
Q1. can i use NAP DHCP for vpn clients, as VPN clients get IP address from my DHCP server? i know there is a NAP VPN option but i want to use NAP DHCP cause NAP DHCP and NAP VPN don;t work together and i want NAP DHCP for internal clients.
    My problem:
P1. with setup above i cannot setup a VPN connection from an external client i get an error "Error 812:The connection was prevented because of a policy configured on your RAS/VPN server.specfically ,the authentication method used by the server to verify
your usename and password may not match the auithentication method configured in your connection profile .Please contact the Administrator of the RAS server and notify them of this error"
I can resolve my problem P1 by running "configure VPN for Dial-Up" with the option "Radius server for Dial-Up or VPN connections." This creates 1 Connection Request Policy and 1 Network Policy, in the policy i set authtorized to windows
    group domain admins
But then I have an issue with NAP DHCP...
When i have a non-domain joined external client, where i have enabled NAP client in services.msc and DHCP Enforcement in local policy i can setup a VPN connection but from the DHCP server i get an IP addres from the subnet/scope and domain suffix domain.com,
so this is working OK. But when i disconnnect the VPN client and disable and stopthe firewall and connect the VPN again its not getting restricted running ipconfig /all shows its not restricted and also Netsh nap client show state > shows its not restricted
BUT it SHOULD be restricted as the firewall is off.
    What could be wrong?

    Hi,
After discussed with so many people, I think this will not work.
First we need know how DHCP enforcement works.
    1. The DHCP client sends a DHCP request message to the DHCP server.
If the DHCP client has an SoH, the DHCP request message includes it. The SoH contains information about the health of the client. The DHCP server passes the SoH to
the NPS server. The NPS server communicates with the policy server to determine whether the SoH is valid.
    2. If the SoH is valid, the DHCP server assigns the DHCP client a complete IP address configuration. The DHCP client has unlimited access to the network, as defined
    by policy.
    3. If the SoH is not valid, the DHCP server limits the access of the DHCP client to the restricted network and assigns it a limited access subnet mask and static
    routes, as defined by policy.
But VPN clients get IPs in a different way. It uses the IP Control Protocol (IPCP) as part of the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection setup. Everything is done
    in VPN tunnel.
    Hope this helps.

  • Build a gateway server for private network ???

    Hello all good friends,
I has a private network, and one Linux box with public IP address, two NICs connecting direct to ISP. Now, I want to set up this linux box to operate as Gateway server so that all my private networks can use Internet. I have asked this question to many peoples and got much suggestions such as install IPchains (NAT server), IPtables (NAT server), SQUID (Proxy server), ... But until now the big question to me is which software is the best one, I mean which software allow my private network accessing to Internet fastest ? (Proxy server or NAT server only ?) and which one is the most secure ? Besides, you know another opinion, please tell with me if you don't mind.
I very grateful to all of you answers me in all my life.
    Tu from Vietnam

Best thing I would suggest is to buy a Gateway Router. I have D-Link 804, but you can buy anything that pleases you more or suits your demands. Also this way, you donot have to have a computer "turned-on" all the time. Some other advantages are that functions like DHCP, NAT and other features are built into the router. This way you can connect upto 253 Computers to a router and also have a 100Mb/sec, internal home network. You can also go for the wireless option, if you have more money to spend. Just look up on the net for more information.

    Hi Kenneth,
Here for your case suggest you to configure RDP session time limit so that your user can disconnect\log off once the specific time limit reached.
You can setup the session time limit in different method.
    1. Open the Server Manager, select Remote Desktop Services.
    2. In Remote desktop Services, in right side you can drop down to collections.
    3. Select the collection which you want to edit the settings.
    4. Under collections Properties, select Task and then Edit Properties.
    5. In Properties dialog box, select Session.
    6. You can find all thetimeout settings under session collection properties; edit according to your requirements and then OK.
And apart also by group policy setting as below.
    Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Session Time Limits
    User Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Session Time Limits
    -  Set time limit for disconnected sessions
    -  Set time limit for active but idle Remote Desktop Services sessions
    -  Set time limit for active Remote Desktop Services sessions
    -  End session when time limits are reached
Please check which setting suitable for your environment and you can apply for your case.

    Hi,
As far as I know, Gateways dont talk to each other. Why you need two GW, with one GW and report to your management servers, this way should work.

  • Got error: Location Code is not enabled in the XML Gateway Server

    Hi,
When I perform Compliance rule screening on GTM - Globel Trade Management, that I defined GTM as an Trading Partner on EBS R12.1.3,
GTM can send response to EBS,but I see the following error message via Transaction Monitor on EBS workflow:
[The Standard:OAG, Transaction Type:ITM , Transaction SubType:EXPORT_COMPLIANCE and Location Code GTM6.2 is not enabled in the XML Gateway Server. Pls check your Setup.]
On EBS,I defined an ITM Partner for GTM,named 'GTM6.2',according to the document created by you: ITM Setup.doc
and I also finished the following steps:
    1. ITM Application Users
    2.ITM Partner Service Types
    3.ITM Parameter Setup
    4.Order Type Creation: ITM Only
5.Customer Creation: create a customer named 'GTM6.2', also enter 'GTM6.2' as EDI Location
6.Define Transactions on XML Gateway as following:
    <Header>:
    Party Type: Customer
    Transaction Type: ITM
    Transaction Sub Type: EXPORT_COMPLIANCE
    <External Transactions (Lines)>:
    Standard Code: OAG
    External Transaction Type: ITM
    External Transaction Sub Type: EXPORT_COMPLAINCE
    Queue: APPLSYS.ECX_IN_OAG_Q
7.Define Trading Partners on XML Gateway as following:
    <Header>:
    Trading Partner Type: Customer
    Trading Partner Name: GTM6.2
    <Trading Partner Details>:
    Transaction Type: ITM
    External Transaction Type: ITM
    External Transaction Sub Type: EXPORT_COMPLAINCE
    Map: WSHITEIN
Source Trading Partner Location Code: GTM6.2 (same as the value what defined in EDI Location for customer)
I think the combination of External Transaction Type, External Transaction Subtype, Standard Code,Source Trading Partner Location Code
should be existing once done above steps, I have no idea why the error prompted.
Does someone can tell how to trace the error?
    Thanks,

  • Gateway server not able to authenticate

    Hello SCOMMers :)
I have a issue with my SCOM 2012 R2 system that i just can't get my head around.
We just purchased a brand new SCOM server that I have migrated our environment to, moved the databases, reporting server and finally i got things up and running after some issues with the DB move.
So i now have 2 SCOM management servers in my environment and four gateway servers, the gateway servers are communicating to the old SCOM server and i want to move them over to the new SCOM server.
I ran the powershell commands from this technet article and thought everything was under
control. But none of the GW servers started communicating with the new SCOM server.
I have of course checked the certificates, hosts file, DNS and firewalls, and i reran the MOMCertImport.exe utility. Also checked that the certificate serial number was correctly inserted to the registry after the MOMCertImport.exe was run. (HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft
OperationsManager\3.0\Machine Settings, binary value named ChannelCertificateSerialNumber contains the serial number of the certificate in a reverse order)
Still i was unable to get the GW server to communicate to the correct management server so i decided i to reinstall the GW server so I could set the name of the new SCOM management server during the GW setup. Before i did the reinstall i ran the Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.GatewayApprovalTool.exe
with the /Delete parameter, the command ran successfully.
When i do the install i still cannot get the communication up and running, the GW server gives me the following errors in the eventlog.
The GW server appears in my Management Servers list but stays in the Not monitored state.
    Event ID: 20057
Failed to initialize security context for target MSOMHSvc/<ServerFQDN> The error returned is 0x80090303(The specified target is unknown or unreachable). This error can apply to either the Kerberos or the SChannel package.
    Event ID: 20071
The OpsMgr Connector connected to tmg-app92.mg.local, but the connection was closed immediately without authentication taking place. The most likely cause of this error is a failure to authenticate either this agent or the server . Check the event log on the server and on the agent for events which indicate a failure to authenticate.
    Event ID: 21001
The OpsMgr Connector could not connect to MSOMHSvc/<ServerFQDN> because mutual authentication failed. Verify the SPN is properly registered on the server and that, if the server is in a separate domain, there is a full-trust relationship between the two domains.
    Event ID: 21016
OpsMgr was unable to set up a communications channel to <ServerFQDN> and there are no failover hosts. Communication will resume when <ServerFQDN> is available and communication from this computer is allowed.
I have installed new certificated on both GW and management server, and i did the SCOM GW installation multiple times, but the issue is the same and the eventlog error also are the same.
Does anyone have any clue to what might be wrong?
    Thanks!
    Bjørn

    Hi,
After you deleting the gateway with Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.GatewayApprovalTool.exe, the gateway object is only marked as deleted in databases. Therefore, try to use different name for the new installed gateway, so the old parameters will not
be associated with the new gateway.
For the communication\certificates problems check these links:

    Hi Naresh,
That is exactly you need to understand Gateway runtime architecture. Take your time for understanding big picture first, then move to how to setp.
OData model provider class and data provider class are on ERP.
You have to register ERP side OData services on Gateway server as proxy. It is the transaction /iwfnd/maint_service. To select service from ERP backend, you have to specify backend system alias.
    Your system environment makes confusions.
+ You have Gateway components on Gateway server but you have also Gateway component on ERP
+ You have registered the OData service on ERP instead of Gateway. It is incorrect setting for Hub deployment.

  • How to replace DHCP server from domainA with DHCP from domainB?

    Hello fellow Administrators,
We have one remote site with one subnet. There's domainA domain controller and about 100 domainA's client computers in that subnet. We're about to send 100 domainB's client computers there as well.
There's also domainA's DHCP server running on the same subnet. DHCP scope options include domainA's domain name, gw and domainA's DNS server addresses.
DomainA and DomainB belongs to separate forests and there's two-way trust between them. DomainA DNS has stubzone for DomainB and DomainB has stubzone for domainA. That's how
clients can resolve hostnames of other domain.
All domainA's clients in remote site will be replaced gradually with domainB's client computers, but this can take a long time.
I want to note, that I cannot create second subnet for domainB at the moment.
At some point, we need to deploy DHCP server to domainB's member server in the remote site. What are the steps I should take to replace existing domainA's DHCP server with domainB's DHCP server while still allowing clients from domainA and domainB to successfully
find domain controller of their own domain and being able to resolve hostnames from both domains?

When the devices on your network first request an IP address or reach the end of their leases (or you force them to check their lease is still valid) they will simply
broadcast a request for a DHCP server, and will accept an offer from the first DHCP server
    to reply.
Multiple DHCP servers PT 1: Spanning multiple subnets.
If you have several VLANs or physical network segments that are separated into different subnets, and you want to provide a DHCP service to devices in all those subnets then there are two ways of doing this.
If the router / layer 3 switch separating them can act as a BOOTP/DHCP relay agent, then you can continue to keep all your DHCP server(s) in one or two central parts of your network and configure your DHCP server(s) to support multiple ranges of addresses.
In order to support this, your router or layer 3 switch must support the BOOTP relay agent specification covered in section
    4 of RFC 1542.
If your router does not support RFC 1542 BOOTP relay agents, or if some of your network segments are geographically dispersed over slow links, then you will need to place one or more DHCP server in each subnet. This ‘local’ DHCP server will only serve its own
local segment’s requirements, and there is no interaction between it and other DHCP servers. If this is what you want then you can simply configure each DHCP server as a standalone server, with the details of the address pool for its own subnet, and not worry
about any other DHCP servers on other parts of the network. This is the most basic example of having more than one DHCP server on the same network.

  • RD Gateway Manager - Unable to read RD Gateway Server Settings

I'm trying to install a Remote Desktop Gateway into my domain, but I am running into a serious road-block... when I load RD Gateway Manager to configure the service, there is nothing to configure because it won't load my server into the console. When I try
to connect to it manually, it returns the following error:
"Unable to read RD Gateway Server Settings"
There are no errors or warnings in Event Viewer. I can verify that C:\Windows\System32\tsgateway\rap.xml exists and is readable. I can verify that Network Policy does have a TS_CAP_01 policy and it is enabled. A valid certificate was applied during setup
(and I've also tried choosing ask me later).
I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the role service (including manually verifying that the policies are removed). I also have this working on another domain server, so I'm at a loss for what to look for... How can I resolve this so that I
    can finish configuring the service?

    Hello,
    Thanks for your post.
From your description, I understand that you’re trying to install the RD Gateway role on a Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain computer. However, after the role
is install, the RD Gateway Manager cannot be loaded into the RD Gateway Manager. The error prompts “Unable to read RD Gateway Server Settings”.
Based on my experience, the issue may be caused by problematic installation or startup of the RD Gateway role. Before we troubleshoot the issue further, I recommend
you to enable the Audit level logging in the Event Viewer and double-check the related clues in the event viewer. To do that, please use the following steps:
    1.
On the RD Gateway server open RD Gateway Manager. To open RD Gateway Manager, click
Start, point to Administrative Tools, point to
Remote Desktop Services, and then click RD Gateway Manager.
    2.
In the console tree, right-click the node that represents your RD Gateway server, which is named for the computer on which the RD Gateway server is running, and then
    click Properties.
    3.
    On the
Auditing tab, select or clear the appropriate check boxes to specify the events that you want to monitor for RD Gateway, and then click
    OK.
When these events occur, you can monitor the corresponding events by using Windows Event Viewer. RD Gateway Manager server events are stored in Event Viewer under
    Application and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\Terminal Services-Gateway\.
Let us know the result if possible. We’d like to help further based on your information replied. Thanks.
