Gathering iTunes libraries of multiple macs on to 1

I just ordered an MBP and wanted to know what will happen when i use migration assistant as I have an iMac and a powerbook which will be competly replaced by the MBP; I have music on my PB, on my iMac and on an external harddrive.
I wanted to know if iTunes will ask me to scan hard drives for music files after using the Migration assistant?
If not what will be the most efficient way to get 3 libraries melt together.
The hd of the MBP would be used for al music I own.

I wanted to know if iTunes will ask me to scan hard drives for music files after using the Migration assistant?
I don't know as I've never used this feature.
I guess (when it does) it will only search on 1 computer.
Maybe someone else can answer that.
I can tell you however how I would gather those 3 libraries.
I would start with the largest one and move it to an external disk using these instructions:
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder.
Also copy the 'iTunes Library' file (in /Users/Username/Music/iTunes) to the external.
After you MBP arrives, copy the 'iTunes Library' file from the external drive to the MBP at /Users/Username/Music/iTunes and run iTunes.
It should recognize the library on your external drive.
If that's OK, move the music from the external to the MBP using the above mentioned instructions.
Now your largest library is on the MBP.
To transfer the other libraries, you can use the external drive as an intermediate for storage or set the iMac and PB in FireWire target disk mode.
Computers which are set in FireWire target disk mode, act like an external drive when connected to the MBP.
Navigate to the music files and add it to the library.
Hope this helps.

  • How to consolidating iTune Libraries from multiple Mac

I was using my Powerbook when I stationed oversea. Now that I am back home, I would like to move the music I have purhcased oversea and loaded on my Powerbook to the iTune librbary I have on my desktop without having to scan thru the CD one by one again. Is there anyway to do it?

I have moved music off my PB by finding the folder that the music is in (iTunes; iTunes Music; Artist Name) and moving that to my iMac.
The next step was to add the music in iTunes (File, Add to Library...).
This will transfer artwork across because that is stored in the MP3 file, it will also transfer track name. What you will lose is the play count as that is stored in iTunes itself, and can be seen in the XML file.
    Season Greetings,
    Colin R.

  • I created two iTunes libraries on my mac mini and would like to merge them into one library. What is the easiest way to do this?

I created two iTunes libraries on my mac mini back in the day. I would like to consolidate them into one iTunes library. What is the easiest method to do this? I do use i-Match to access all my music from  iCloud, if that makes any difference.  Thanks. Mark

Thanks for the reply. When I created the 2 libraries years ago I would hold down the options key and had 2 library names to choose from. Now it just shows a lot of files when I do that, With over 7,000 songs I think I will just look for the few songs from the original library I used to use that still interest me, if they don't show up in my default current library. Thought there would be any easy was to integrate all my music files into one library. I am definitely not going to spend days manually doing this, but thanks again.

  • Multiple iTunes Libraries on single Mac

I have somehow managed to create libraries of music/podcasts/videos in 5 different places on my iMac. I would like to consolidate all of them into one spot that can be shared by all accounts. Is there a way to merge them easily, that is without copying song by song or rewriting the entire library, potentially losing some files that are more current? For example, I have 3 folders of the Killers, only 1 of which has all downloaded songs. Thanks.

If you want to do it that way, each person should have their own computer login which will give each person their own iTunes library.
This would be far easier than using multiple iTunes libraries in one computer login.
To do different content on each device, select the device in iTUnes (menu View > Show sidebar), click the tabs acroos top and select what you want to sync to that device. Do the saem for all devices.

  • One itunes library with multiple macs (Wireless external HD)

I just bought 3 macs and a 6TB External network drive. I would like to have all of my media on the external drive and have all 3 computers with the ability to add/access content. Can this work? I need the iTunes libraries to update when content is added from any of the three computers.
    Thank you in advance

Don't just put the media on the external, put the whole iTunes folder, media and all, on the external.  That way any Mac getting access to the external will use the same library (but only one can do so at a time).  For each computer start iTunes and immediately hold down the option key to enable selection of the library location.

  • Accessing a single itunes library from multiple macs using a NAS???

hi, at the moment i have a imac g5 holding all my itunes library files on its hard drive. i'm about to buy another mac to locate downstairs, and also have itunes on my windows laptop.
i am thinking of moving the itunes library to a networked attached storage device, something like the buffalo terastation. does anyone have experience of this? does it work well over a wireless network? (802.11g)
how easy is this to set up, and make each mac point to the library on the NAS device? are there any problems with ripping cds to the NAS device, or multiple macs accessing different songs at the same time?
what would i need to do on each mac to make if see the library if i moved it to the NAS?
sorry for the questions, but i know what i want to do, just not quite sure how to do it!
    thanks, andy

    hi,
sorry i haven't tried this. i've now resorted to
buying a mac mini, attaching an external firewire
harddrive and using itunes sharing. still means i
have to have the mac mini on all the time, so not
ideal. i decided not to buy the nas for the time
being. i'm still interested in hearing if it works on
    other peoples systems tho!
There are others who have done something similar in that they created a shared folder on one computer and opened access to that shared folder to all other computers. The result was that only one computer could listen to the library at a time. I would assume the same thing would be true if using a NAS due to the file locking iTunes imposes. Anybody want to take a ride to the Apple Store and see if one of their reps have done it??

  • How can I move/copy my windows Itune libraries to my MAC itunes?

  • Separate itune libraries on 1 mac computer

I am wanting 2 separate itunes libraries on my computer or something similar, where files are separate and using my music group won't interfere with using my wife's.  Can someone help?
I have tried numerous suggestions that I "googled" but none seemed to be any help whatsoever.

Quit itunes, and then reopen while holding down option. it will promp you to quit, choose a library, or create a new library. Click create a new library, and name it something you can find easily later. I reccomend that you save it in /home folder/music. Import media you want to, and you are good to go. When you want to change libraries, launch itunes holding option, and click choose library. Choose the library you want to open. You can also just create a new user account.

  • Sharing music between two itunes libraries on same mac computer

Hi. We have one computer with two Itunes Libraries (when we click on Itunes we use the Option Key so that we can choose the appropriate Library).
What is the best way to move songs between the two Libraries. I tried burning a cd from one library and then uploading to the next - but that didn't work and took forever.
    thanks
Ps: To give you idea of which Itunes I have - here is my most recent update:

  • How to sync iTunes libraries on multiple machines without copying music

    Background:
I have 4 machines running iTunes 9, all authorized with the same account. All music is on a networked storage device (NSA). Each iTunes points to the NSA for music files. Each user on each machine has their own local iTunes library for individualized playlists, etc. When music is purchased, regardless of machine, it is automatically downloaded onto the NSA. We have deselected the Advanced preference "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library". Our goal is to have one live copy of our music rather than multiple copies sprinkled about all 4 machines. We do periodic backups of the NSA.
    Question:
How do I get all the iTunes user libraries on all 4 machines to automatically reflect new music purchases? The library of the purchaser is updated just fine, but no one else's is. The Home Sharing Settings option updates the library, but it also copies over the music, defeating the purpose of one copy.
    Thanks in advance!

When I first moved to OS X I decided that all of my/our music should be in one library, with one Apple ID for purchasing/playback and iPod syncing, located someplace other than each user's home folder. Using an alias of the destination folder worked as long as we were all on one machine.
Later when we acquired a second machine the setup was similar, except that the library was on an external HD attached to the newer/faster machine and accessed over our home network. The drawback of this method is that the machine with the library on it has to be up and running (of course).
We've finally moved further into the digital world by purchasing a network drive (NAS to be precise - a My Book World II for those who wish to know), upgraded our router and network switch to GB, and have a third iMac on its way (thank you eBay).
All of our music (the library we started years ago), all of our pictures, and other miscellaneous things reside on the NAS, which is also used for TimeMachine backups (on the non public volume). The idea being that any of us can access any of the media or documents as we need or want to.
Apparently (or I've missed something simple) Apple, in their wisdom, doesn't believe that a setup like ours (and apparently others as well) should exist. That each user and/or each machine, should have their/its very own music library that no one else can have FULL access to.
Home Sharing doesn't allow what I/we've been setting up from the first day we added music to our library. Sure it lets everyone with their own library to listen to other's library's that are up and running (i.e. the machine is on, and iTunes is running).
What we want to do is have all of our machines (the two, soon to be three, iMac's and one PC running XP) access the *same library* with full read/write/burn access AT THE SAME TIME! Hence the logic in purchasing a NAS. What we can't do is have iTunes running on more than ONE machine at a time since the other network users/machines receive this message:
The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.
Which is certainly not the case since each user/machine can access, read, write, and burn from the above library at will as long as they are the only person doing so.
Changing the permissions on the library file doesn't stick (probably because its on the NAS), otherwise I would have done that and you wouldn't be reading this.
Thanks for any help anyone can give.

  • How do I use one iTunes account with multiple macs?

I have a Mac mini and am getting a MacBook Pro.  I want to use my iTunes library that currently resides on my mini on my MacBook as well without jacking up anything.
I have an iPhone, an iPad Air and a classic iPod that are all sync'ed to the iTunes on the mini.

    Hello blcampbell
There are many different ways to handle this and the easiest way is to migrate you data is to use Migration Assistant. It will migrate not only your music but also other content from your Mac Mini. If all you want is music, you can always just select that as an option. The article below will guide you through that option plus a few others if you are unsure how you want to proceed.

  • Best practices for sharing iPhoto libraries across multiple Macs

I have a pair of iMacs running 10.6.x. and iPhoto 11 connected via Ethernet to an Airport Extreme. I am looking for a way to share my iPhoto library between the two Macs.
I found an Apple Support note on the topic (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198) which states that a disk image is a supported location for a shared iPhoto library (with limitations acceptable to me) and it strikes me that this would be a way of hosting a shared iPhoto library onto a NAS device.
Am I missing a simpler solution or, more importantly, am I missing any blindingly obvious caveats? I'd love to hear from anybody who has tried this (successfully or otherwise) or anybody who has a better idea. I haven't bought a NAS device yet, so I'm open to alternative suggestions.
    Specific requirements:
Members of my family use either one of a pair of iMacs.
The only user who edits the iPhoto library is me and I only need read/write access from one machine.
iPhoto library access limited to one user at a time is acceptable and practical in my case.

    Easiest:
If the other users only get to see the Library then just use iPhoto Sharing.
Enable sharing in the iPhoto Preferences on the Host machine, then go to the other macgine and in the same location enable 'Look for Shared Libraries'
Other forms of sharing will give the users read/write access to the Library.
A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.

  • Multiple itunes (libraries) for multiple ipods

I have read the FAQ's in several places and my specific situation is not addressed so here goes...
I just got a new computer and when loading my itunes library/ipod and my wife's itunes library/ipod I would like to do so without setting up a second user account.
    Is this possible?
(Basically I want 2 differnt itunes icons on the desktop that open to 2 different music libraries, each for our respective ipods)
    Thanx

I think this is what you need. If this does not help you other suggestions can be made

  • One iTunes library on multiple Macs and remote accsess

    Dear all,
I really need an advise. I am now having an idea to transfer all my iTunes to NAS server - I am thinking about synology 8TB ( is it a good choice?).
Recetly I have red here that I can SOMEHOW tranfer iTunes folder to NAS server and then access it from my MAcbook Air iTunes, my iMac iTunes etc? Is that correct? How can I excatly do this?
And now my MAIN question - if the first condition can be done - can I access my NAS iTunes folder at home from work and then using my whole iTunes library? (I think that if i can be able to connect remotly the NAS server to my Air i can be also be able to using the NAS iTunes folder - library - as I would do at home but I am not sure)
Please - give me an advise, this is going to be very complex for me. :-)
Thank you and have a great day
