Gathering user info

Using elements 8 and windows 7. When I open Elements, the bar that says gathering user info rolls forever. I have let it run for an hour and it never finishes. Is something missing on my PC? DoI need to reinstall?

The best thing to do is to just skip the unwelcome screen. Go into the program files or, if you have a 64-bit system, program files (x86) and find the actual editor and/or organizer and make desktop shortcut(s). Then use those in the future instead of the welcome screen.

Unfortunately, there's not enough info listed to give you an effective answer.
Can you give more detailed system spec's. There are a lot of differences in RAM, & Hard Drive Technologies. Is your 2TB a single hard drive, or multiple drives in RAID? While a single 2TB drive is nice for the storage capacity, they also sacrifice some performance to reach that capacity... What speed is the RAM, & I'm assuming it's properly opperating in Dual Channel mode (watch your POST screen to be sure). Which Core i7 CPU are you running, & what Operating System are you running. Finally, bring up your task manager, & see what processes are using CPU cycles. Also, are you starting up PrE8 through the default shortcut which uses the Welcome screen?
A quick guess is that Auto Analyzer & the Welcome screen are behind your troubles, but can't be sure till more info is available.

Please try couple of probable solutions as mentioned below:
Solution 1:
1. Close Elements.
2. Launch the Photoshop Elements Welcome Screen and hold down ctrl + alt + shift as you click Editor.
3. Continue to hold the keys until you see a message box asking if you want to delete Photoshop Elements settings file; click Yes. Elements will open with default preferences.
Solution 2: In case any network printer is attached try to launch without network or printer uninstall or make different printer as default.
Solution 3: Try launching with anti-virus off or removing PSE from conflicting list.
Solution 4:
On the drive on which you have installed PSE,on my machine it is on C:
Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 9\Locales\<locale>\Plug-Ins\Import-Exportand you will find twain plug-in. Remove that plug-in from that location and copy it somewhere else.
Now launch PSE and check if it works.
Solution 5: Try with admin account or right click and select run as admin. or try directly from .exe

"Gathering User Info" again

I am on Elements 9 and have read a previous entry regarding this problem but to no avail.
I start the Organizer, click on the "Welcome. my name" and I get to input my password.
The only problem is that it is not recognised, so I ask to reset my password.
I get an email from "Photoshop.com" and am able to reset my password. Also receive an email confirming the reset.
I then restart Elements and get the "gathering user info" again. Once I get into the Orgainizer or the Editor my password is not recognised.
What now ?

Launch PSe Welcome Screen
Allow 'Gathering Info' to fail.
Sign In again with Adobe Id (user ID) and new password.

PSE9 on Win7. "Gathering User Info..."

Just installed PSE 9. Installation was successful (on Windows 7 x64). Detected that I'd had PSE 8 before, upgraded my catalog and informed me it was going to migrate all photo tag info. Got into Organizer OK. I exited after awhile.
Now when I start PSE 9, all I get is the Welcome screen with "Gathering User Info...". I left it in this state for 15 minutes. It was not consuming any CPU cycles. Rebooted my PC. Restarted PSE 9. Still just stays on "Gathering User Info...".
Any ideas how to fix this? I'm thinking I may have to try re-install...

The last thing that I did last night was
1. uninstall PSE9
2. uninstall Adobe Air, Adobe Flash Player IE, Adobe Flash Player
3. install latest Adobe Air and install the lastest Flash Players
4. installed PSE9. I just let it run and the installation completed succesfully (when I checked this morning).
So it looks like uninstalling and reinstalling those other Adobe products allowed the install to complete (instead of failing at the "Installing required Sharing Technlogies" step).
So now I have PSE9 installed.
1. When I clicked the desktop icon to start it, I get the Welcome Screen with the "Gathering User Info..."
2. When I click on Organize, it immediately goes into my Win 7 Taskbar and cannot be resurrected from there. It is still there. I'm not sure if PSE9 is doing anything.
3. Then I run the PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe (from its directory). Editor pops up. It has me signed in. I Sign Out. I sign back in successfully to my account.
I then wonder if, for some reason Organizer has decided to open up somewhere off my screens. I find that that is the case! I drag it back onto onto one of my three screens.
And it's all working
So I had multiple weird things on this installation:
a. "Gathering User Info..." which never went away
b. Multiple PSE9 installations that failed until I reinstalled Air and Flash Players.
c. Had to run PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe from the Adobe directory so that I could get the Adobe sign in dialog
c. Organizer deciding to open up off the screen.
But, as I said, it's working now. I hope that others don't have to attempt as many installs and jump through all these hoops like I did...
I do wonder why the Organizer icon is just showing as a black and white image and the Editor icon is a colored "PSE" image. This is what the two look like in my Win7 Taskbar. Is that the correct Organizer icon?

T540-System Update- Win7 64bit - An error occurred while gathering user info-HelloLevel_9_12_00.xml

When attempting to do a Lenov System update, the error message "An error occurred while gathering user information" is displayed.
Upon review the of the tvsu_*.log, it appears there is an issue with the lenovo website when it tries to pull down the following config file:

Hi,
in this situation try following:
open registry:
HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Software\Lenovo\System Update\Preferences\UCSettings\RunTime
check if the informations are correct.
In case not, then correct them.
- Try to run TVSU as Administrator (right-click on it and select Run as Administrator)
In case this will be of no use, then just go into the install folder of TVSU and there you will see the folder called "Logs". In there you will for sure find the exact information on what went wrong. Perhaps some proxy config, or just the server was unavailable.

Why is it when I launch Element 9, the window says "gathering user Info"?

The bar on this window continues to spin, but nothing EVER happens. It never really shows me any user information. Not sure what this is even supposed to do since it never works.

No, I mean you can log out until you are in PSE, then log in if you want to be connected. Or stop syncing before you launch PSE. Usually once you've eliminated the hung connection attempt it will work okay until the servers go weird again.
BTW, you seem to think I work for adobe. I don't.

Why won't PE9 load up user info?

I'm having problems getting PE9 to load up. The gathering user info bar never changes. It just keeps "gathering". If I click on the new or open project buttons it takes 5 minutes to load if it loads at all. I uninstalled PE9 and re-installed it. Still having the same problems. Do I need to manually put my user info in?

One likely cause of issues would be an update/hot-fix to Vista (do you have those set to the default of automatic?) breaking your video (and/or audio) drivers. Per the suggestions in that linked article, I would update both from their mfgr's. Web sites. Do not trust Windows, or any utility to tell you if you have the very latest drivers. Those recommendations will probably be 6 mos. out of date, and of little to no use.
If nothing in that article helps, then I suggest posting the full system specs., as outlined in this ARTICLE.

Gathering User Information Freezes

When starting "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Elements 9 Organizer\Photoshop Elements 9.0.exe" the software brings up a "Welcome to Adobe Photoshop Elements 9" startup screen. It gives me the option to Organize or Edit. It also starts to gather user information related to my on-line photo storage archive.
Up until recently the "Gathering User Info..." process completed in a few seconds. Now it searches "forever" without retrieving any information.
Any suggestions/solutions?

Open Full Edit. Click on “Welcome, your name” on the menu bar then sign out.
Then log back in again.
That usually works.
You may need to double click on the file - PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe - to launch it directly.
You will find it in the Program Files folder or program files (x86) on 64 bit systems.

You have win8. Have you ever had an earlier version of SU , ie when you booted up the 1st time (did it work).
Run windows update and make sure .netframework is current.
Did you upgrade from win 7?

System Update error "An error occurred while gathering user information"

I honestly think that i'm never going to stop running into issues with Lenovos software....
Anyways, i've reinstalled countless times trying every way to fix things and nothing works. I will post my log for others to look at and hopefully help me out.

One thing I noticed is that if I visit the download link for the HelloLevel_9_14_00.xml here: https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/agent/SSClientCommon/HelloLevel_9_14_00.xml
It shows up completely blank but everything HelloLevel_9_13_00.xml and < shows up fine for me. It appears this is the same issue the log is reporting saying that "this XML file is not well-formed" could this be a Lenovo issue though? No one else has reported this exact problem though so I guess not.
My model is a Thinkpad Edge E540 (20C6008SUS) with Windows 8.1

The hello level 9_14 is expected behavior. The link is currently set blanks. Down the road, when a newer version of SU is available, and Lenovo wants SU to self update, this link will contain the self update information.
As you saw, hello level9_13 contains data.

Expected output is the creation of two XML's:

TVSU "an error occurred while gathering user information"

I am getting this error on E20 4220CTO. I was told by tech support one/some of the windows files were bad and that was why it didn't run. I don't believe that response as everything else works just fine--except TVSU--and the tech gave me no idea which windows files might be bad. I am running version 4.03.0012. Is there any fix out there?? I do not manually update the registry.But I have run a registry cleaner and reinstalled latest verion of TVSU same problems. I also did a windows repair on NetFramework 4.0. I am running Win7-SP1 64-bit. I understand there is a beta Ver. 5 out for TVSU, if yes, where can I get it???? Or is there a different fix? I have checked the mapping interface.xml file and my version of Windows appears correctly there. Any help would be appreciated.

ThinkVantage System Update -- An error occurred while gathering user information

I receive this message after selecting "Get New Updates" in Version 3.14.0031 of this software. I am running Windows XP SP3 on an X200 Thinkpad. I have tried removing and reinstalling the program without success.

1. Version 6.0.5717.35 is for the ThinkVantage Toolbox and the version I have installed now is 6.0.5802.25. Is there a way to use Toolbox to do a System Update?
2. The ThinkVantage System Update I have installed is at version 3.14.0034 with a build date of 2011-4-18. The System Update installed this version itself and is showing as the current version.
So I seem to be up-to-date on the software but am still getting the same error message "An error occurred while gathering user information"; when the progress bar is at 9%.
Thanks, any help on this would be appreciated.

Kicking a user out of the portal if a User Info Setting is not populated?

That's what we want to do - we have a bit set in a User Info Setting by a custom profiling process. Users are redirected back to the Login screen of the portal when they successfully complete the process and the bit gets set to a certain value. This is kicked off in our OnAfterLogin (Login PEI). Well, if a user just goes up to the address bar in the browser and deletes up to "server.pt", they can get to the portal without this custom process being completed - they can circumvent it, because they technically have already logged in. The problem is that if they don'tcomplete that process, many portlets will not work because they are dependent on data gathered and set as a result of successful completion.
So, we need to somehow check globally if a certain User Info Setting is populated, and if it is not, log the user out. We know the URL/AS to redirect to, but I don't see a PEI in which a redirect is returned other than those in the Login PEI and Directory Actions PEI. I was hoping the IPageActions interface might help... So, I'm guessing a PEI is not the answer. What would be the best way to approach this?

How about having your header or footer portlets check for you?
Or when you setup a user, only give them access to one portlet. The portlet would allow them to update their information, then give them access to the remaining features of the site.
