Gaussian Blur keyframes on timeline - RIDICULOUS scaling

When adding keyframes to Gaussian Blur ...
If I view those keyframes on the timeline, it's bloody useless, because the scaling factor is absurd!
The range on the timeline is 0 - 30,000 !!
WHY?
No one uses gaussian blur with more than 100, maybe 200. Why does it go to 30,0000?
Do they have any editors working over there at Adobe?

He's talking about using the rubberband keyframe UI from within a clip in the timeline. If you apply gaussian blur, click the effects icon (in the clip header) then set the effect display to Gausiian Blur > Blurriness, then you can drag the line up to the top which will indeed show a value of 30000.
It happens this way because the timeline's rubberband UI is not optimized to control each and every effect parameter in the ideal way. Some value has to be chosen as a max for the rubberband to display and that max does nto always match what the user would do. But your problem is valid, and the need for improved effects controls has been heard. Please do submit your own feature request for it though if you want.
The workwround is to use the effects controls panel's paremeter hot text, which is not confined by a vertical ceiling. This is the ideal method for full control over applied effect. In my experience, the rubberbands work best for things like volume, speed and opacity, where there's as many variables, and you just need a way to visualize the ups and downs.

  • Gaussian Blur is different when Scaling

    Hi Guys,
I have a problem when I scaled one object which has Gaussian Blur effect. Before it is scaled it looks smooth and nice (1st image), however when it is scaled to larger size, the Gaussian Blur does not look the same (2nd image). Please refer to my screen shots for better understanding. Any help and tip is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    David,
Just managing to collect my wits (easier here an hour after midnight).
The Gaussian Blur is fundamentally a Photoshop effect and therefore fails to answer to the Scale Strokes & Effects.
You will need to increase the value as suggested, or you may turn the object into a Symbol before scaling, and then it should behave as you wish.

  • Gaussian Blur Problem

    Hi there
I am having trouble getting the gaussian blur to work properly.
I have an image that is split up into layers using photoshop and I am trying to blur one of the layers. The only problem is that I am getting a white halo round the image as it blurs. My image is a colour image with black lines round it. It is as if the colour is seeping out underneath the black lines as it blurs, even though it's all on the same layer.
The blur does exactly what I want in photoshop, but in Final Cut I have this annoying problem. I can't do the blur ahead of time as I need to animate the blur.
I can't even begin to tell you how amazingly urgent this problem is.
    Cheers

OK. I see the problem you have with white bleeding in.
    Here's a different approach:
Click the film frame icon with the A on it at the bottom right of your Viewer.
Choose Matte > Color. Go to the Controls tab and set the color you want.
Press F9 to insert edit or drag to the Canvas.
Open the Effects tab in the Viewer. Video Generators > Shapes > Circle. Press F12 to superimpose on V2 in your Timeline.
Go to the film frame icon again and choose Slug. Switch the source/destination patch button to V2
Press F12 to superimpose on V3. Right click the Slug clip on your Timeline. Go to Composite mode > Travel Matte Luma.
Click the Shape clip to send it to the Viewer. Use the Softness contols to keyframe your blur effect .
My result using the above method:
This took about 30 seconds to set up.

  • How to "smooth in" a gaussian blur fx?

    Hi there
I would like to know how can I "smooth in" a gaussian blur fx. I recorded a video and needed to add a tittle to
the video and when I add the fx it doesn't fade in smoothly it's like ON and then OFF. Is there a way to make it like
fade in/out a few frames? I'm a novice to FCX growing out of iMovie because needed more finer and powerful
adjustments but still need lots to learn compared to iMovie!!! Any help would be VERY welcomed!!!
    THANKS ALL!!!
    Serge
PS I have 10.0.9 for FCX

IIt sounds like you want to keyframe the blur to ramp it up. Set a keyframe, button next to the value box, and set the slider to zero. Move later in time where you want the blur to finish increasing and set the slider value to whatever you want. The additional keyframe will be added automatically.

  • Script to Edit Gaussian Blur Effect

    Hello
I have a complex piece of artwork which has to be scaled up by a factor of 10. No problem except the Gaussian Blur Effect will not scale.
Rather than go through each path and edit the blur amount (by a factor of 10) I had hoped I could write a script which would iterate through every path and if it had a Gaussian Blur Effect edit the value.
Looking in the AppleScript dictionary and online I can't see any way of accessing a path's Appearance or Effects.
I would be very grateful for some advice on this before I start the tedious process of manually changing the values.
    Regards
    Chris

    Hello Mark
Thanks for your prompt reply. I thought as much. It's disappointing really.
The select filters will not unfortunately be helpful because the blurs are different so I can't select all blurred items because I don't want to set them all the same and equally I can't pick one and select all with the same blur amount because I don't know if I have changed all of the items.
I've just got my head down and am selecting them all individually and editing them!

  • Scale gaussian blur

    Hi there people,
I created a logo in illustrator with 2 gaussian blurs. I have a normal thin path with a stroke of 2px and a gaussian blur applied.
It all looks good, but when I scale the logo real big or small, the gaussian blur doesn't scale equally.
Can you tell me how I can set the layer/blur so it whill be exactly the same in any resolution?
I understand it happens because the gaussian blur is a photoshop non-vector based effect. this way the blur doesn't scale up or down.
is there any other way to get a similair blur in illustrator? (or any other solution)
    greets,
    jeroen

Hey Folks -- I'm working on CS3 (mac) and we're having the same problem with scaling the gaussian blur. I checked the prefs and made sure "scale strokes and effects" was checked off as an option but it's still not working. Could that be because the original was done as a filter and not an effect? How can you tell which method was used?

  • Gaussian blur-- posterization

    Hi all-
In a current project, I'm using some blurring effects through time (either a shot starts off blurry and comes into focus, or the reverse direction). All of the raw footage starts out completely in focus.
I have been using the "Gaussian Blur" effect in FCP, but I'm finding that as the blur amount changes through time, the image gets very posterized (i.e. distinct color bands, rather than gradual color shift), especially if there is motion in the shot that I'm blurring.
Does anyone recommend a way to eliminate the posterization artifacts, or a different effect or plug-in that will accomplish my image blurs with a more natural-lens look and quality?
    Thanx gang.
    -Chris

    Yup, that's it, Jerry.
But in another FCP group, a listserve, I belong to, in a recent thread about 10-bit video in Final Cut, some well respected professionals did some testing. Oliver Peters posted this reply:
OK, I've had a chance to get back to this and ran another test this morning. SD input from DBeta to Kona2 using bars from DBeta tape. Captured bars both as 8-bit and 10-bit
    media. Created 5 timelines:
    1. 8-bit with 8-bit processing
    2. 8-bit with HPYUV processing
    3. 10-bit with 10-bit processing
    4. 10-bit with HPYUV processing
    5. 10-bit with 8-bit processing
Applied 3-way CC to the clips and compared no effect, effect rendered and effect previewed (not rendered). When you leave the CC settings at default, i.e. no adjustments, all timelines and all combinations of rendered, unrendered and no effect match each other on the scopes. (Note, that there was a very slight change on the 8-bit processing in the
10-bit timeline.) However, when you actually change the settings, i.e. apply CC changes, then ALL 10-bit and HPYUV combinations show a shift between rendered and preview of
the effect. The ONLY timeline where there was no change was #1, 8-bit with 8-bit processing. Also the 8-bit within the 10-bit timeline had extremely little change, but of course you take a hit stepping down to 8-bit processing. The changes that I saw were minor luma shifts (mainly in the midrange) and subtle vector shifts.

  • Gaussian Blur = 0 still blurry

Could someone please help me with a search? I'm trying to animate a blur, but at the first keyframe (blur amount=0), it's still noticeably blurry...which will result in a jump during the playback. I disable the blur and it's normal. I've tried searching "gaussian blur amount" and got 5 pages of nothing related. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply, Tony.
Here's links to images of what I'm talking about. First is the normal.
You can see that the defocus filter is not checked, so this is with the filter off.
Now, compare that to the defocus. example.
You see that the filter is activated and set to 0. But notice that the word "Argentina" is a bit blurry and it's bounding box is a bit bigger. When I turn the filter on and off I can see it move up and down. It's not a render issue because I've rendered it and it's still blurry.
    What am I missing?

  • Layered PSD files getting corrupted when applying a gaussian blur.

A file is created then three layers to keep simple a red square is created using the marquee tool then filled with a colour this is repeated on the next layer with a different colour then the third layer is completely filled with another colour.
The first two layers are selected and scaled then made transparent.
Finally the layer in between layer 3 and layer 1 is selected and a gaussian blur is applied this is when the corruption occurs

After file is corrupted Photoshop has to be closed and re-opened because subsequent files that are opened are corrupted.
This has been reported in CS5 and CS5.5 extensively but not so much in CS6.

Below is the steps that where used to create the corruption in the files.
    Gausian Blur corruption in Photoshop
Step 1. Create document with 3 layers + Background.
    Step 2. Layer 3 - Create a box (Red)
    Step 3. Layer 2 - Create a box (Blue)
Step 4. Layer 1 – Fill layer (Yellow)
    Step 5. Select layer 3 & 2 & scale down & press
    return
    Step 6. Change opacity of layer 1 & 2 to 25%
Step 7. Go to layer 2 and select Gaussian Blur filter
Please Note that the blue & Red Box Have changed
    colour.
As I Zoom in and out the corruption gets worse.
Sometimes this corruption dose’nt show up until you have

  • Banding after applying Gaussian blur

    Hey all.
I'm working with a project in FCP7 running Lion. What im trying to do is add a gaussian blur with a light ray effect for the end of a song. It slowly blurs up and the light rays add a glow. Fades.
The video quality i'm working with is very good, so I don't believe there should be any problem applying these effects. When they are applied though, i get a banding effect which i really don't want to be there.
Still seconds before the effects begin to keyframe into existence
Still once the effects are being applied. It's a bit hard to see because the image was resized to be smaller. But if you look you can still see the banding around the brighter areas. The banding occurs after the Gaussian Blur is applied, so that seems to be the root cause.
Anyone have any ideas of how I can solve this? Footage is 1920x1080i Pro

That's the first thing that came to my mind...the order. I tried that and it did no good. I'll go back to that part of the project and see if it's still doing it. I added a directional blur and it worked. HMMM...

  • Creating a symbol from shape with gaussian blur = problem

I am trying to create artwork to map to a globe using the 3D revolve effect...the problem is the shape/layer I'm using to create the "glow" effect (compound path filled with white and a gaussian blur applied):
When I create a symbol out of this, here is the problem (note the "excess" areas on the top and right):
...resulting in this messed up globe...
Doing an outer glow effect instead of gaussian blur results in the same thing (its definitely the blur causing this, deleting the shape fixes the problem).  Expanding the shape with the blur results in an image the same size as the bounding box in image 2 above. Any ideas how to address this?
    thx

Yep, that did it! (something strange going on now with the longitude/latitude lines going thru India, but I'll work on that later)...Thank you!

  • Gaussian Blur in Photoshop CS5 Corrupting files

We just got brand new systems at work less than a month ago and this event has happened twice since then. When using Photoshop CS5 Extended and using Gaussian blur the file becomes blocky and all layers as well as their masks become corrupted with these blocks. Can anyone help or is there any advice?
    Here are my system specs...
    Model Name:    Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:    MacPro5,1
      Processor Name:    6-Core Intel Xeon

I'm getting this same issue - or a similar one. It seems to only happen when I run the Gaussian blur command, and during the same process in my workflow. It also seems for me to happen when I have made a selection from a layer above that is a smart object.
Let me describe the scenario that I have experienced a couple times in the past week. (BTW I just upgraded to CS5 only a couple weeks ago).
Usually I have a document open with dozens or hundreds of layers. The effect that I am executing when this seems to happen is where I have a group of shapes or placed image smart object layer and I'm creating a shadow layer by making a blank layer below said group or image, making a selection from the above group or image, and then filling the selection in the blank layer with a color - which I then run the Gaussian blur filter on, and afterward warp transform to get my realistic looking shadow effect.
But the problem is in seemingly random instances and on seemingly random documents when I run that Gaussian blur, Photoshop freaks out and craps the bed. And by craps the bed I mean deletes pixel data from multiple layers in my document very randomly, and also generates odd bright colors all throughout the document.
You can see the initial freak out in this screen shot from when I just initially selected the Gaussian blur filter from the menu (but had not yet even clicked "OK"): http://cl.ly/3KTx . The strange thing is that I had just run this series of steps on the above layer which in the screen shot you'll see as "Layer 44", and all was well.
Here's a screen shot showing the file after I closed it out, restarted Photoshop, and opened the file back up: http://cl.ly/3K2C . In case you can't tell, data from several layers all over the file is missing and corrupted.
I'm sure I don't have to explain how exasperating this is, as this represents more than a year's worth of work on a client project, no joke. Fortunately I'm mostly done with the actual site build, but that makes the loss of the artwork files of no less consquence - especially seeing as how I'm not ACTUALLY finished and I did in fact need all of that data to complete the project.
Anyhow, some additional details which may or may not be related to the issue:
    - The issue seems to happen randomly. As stated above the same steps did not produce the error just a few minutes before.
    - I have had this issue with another file this week where I was doing the same processes on another shape.
    - It seems that this is occuring when I make the selection from a layer that is a smart object of some type
    - I also noticed artifacts in the weird colors (after I tried running the processes again, so not in the above screenshot) that were actually design elements from an entirely different document that I was working with earlier this evening.
    - I have filed a bug report.
Dunno what else to describe, but I hope you guys can get this figured out, seriously. I paid way too much for my upgrade to CS5 to have bugs in key software features corrupt my files thank you.
Also, in regards to my system...

  • How to batch apply Gaussian blur in Aperture

I find myself applying Gaussian Blur to a lot of our shots via Photoshop CS3.
We keep all our shots in Aperture, so I click the image to edit it in CS3, copy layer, apply gaussian blur and set transparency to 30-40%....
Is there a way to automate this ?

You can set up scripts/actions in PS which will automatically be applied to every image that is opened, but I can't remember how you do it. And it would be applied to every image whether you like it or not...

  • AI effects: Feather versus gaussian blur? which is raster or vector?

i`m looking at feathering versus blurring. both in illustrator effect drop down menu.
from what I I understand the blur/gaussian blur under photoshop effects (in illustrator) will pixelate the edge gradation, but the illustrator effect "feather, will keep it vector, is this correct?
from sample here they both look the same to me, and I noticed the feather effect was gaussian blurring the edge anyway to produce its result,,
from what I can see I should be able to make either of these as large as a billboard and they would both still be smooth gradients? or would the gaussian blur result in pixelation unless I had the vector object sized correctly in the document in the first place to suit the billboard.
what I am trying to ask is how do they work,
my take is the AI "feather" will allow resizing of the vector object shape to any size and not be pixelated on print output,
where as the gaussian blur PS effect, you would need to make sure your object is correctly sized on the correct document size to ensure that it prints smoothly.
    any feedback is good,....

    wildbirdsketch,
actually can I confirm, both produce a raster gradation to soften the edge, so its no longer vector once you apply a blur or feather correct?
It is, but with raster effects.
asking because if I create a blur/feather, I will have to consider the resolution  or not as again I`m assuming no because each time I resize the object the effect recalculates itself as necessary to create the right blur and resolution for that size.?
As long as you keep the Effect>Document Raster Effect Settings the same, the resolution of raster effects will remain the same,
and when these vector objects print (in general for AI), i`ve never known, do they print as Vector or does the RIP turn them all into raster anyway?
    Indeed.
just confused on this, I`m guessing their only vector while in illustrator, but once going through the printer it will all be raster  via the RIP if thats correct,
    Indeed.
its just that vector allows you to scale it to the required output size prior to print and have it print crisply without having to focus on resolution or resampling methods correct?
    Indeed.

I'm trying to isolate skin with a secondary layer and am successful.  I want to blur the skin to reduce blemishes but when doing so the blur and degrain sliders don't seem to have an effect. Can I apply a gaussian blur fx on just that secondary? Can't seem to figure this out.  Is there a better way to smooth skin?

Here's an Adobe help page for isolating skin with suggestion on the use of the blur slider also:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/speedgrade/using/apply-secondary-color-corrections.html
And here's one of the original creators of Iridas/SpeedGrade, Patrick Palmer, a six minute vid-tut on using secondaries (specifically in CS6 but this hasn't changed):
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-speedgrade-cs6/secondary-color-correction-in-speedgrade-cs 6/
I'd note, the "blur" and "denoise" tools on the Secondary tab are more about smoothing the keying of the secondary ... they apply a bit of blur or de-noising to make the secondary smoother and cover over the odd pixel or three or four that don't "fit" the key of the secondary in the middle of something you're aiming for.
In current SpeedGrade, I'd try using the Guassian Blur (Range) effect, and sample a good range of the skin tones.
And a lot of people use Red Giant's "Cosmo" plug-in over in AfterEffects or Premiere Pro ... it's a tool designed specifically for working skin tones, dealing with blemishes, wrinkles, spots, and such.
