Gaussian Blur Problem

Hi there
I am having trouble getting the gaussian blur to work properly.
I have an image that is split up into layers using photoshop and I am trying to blur one of the layers. The only problem is that I am getting a white halo round the image as it blurs. My image is a colour image with black lines round it. It is as if the colour is seeping out underneath the black lines as it blurs, even though it's all on the same layer.
The blur does exactly what I want in photoshop, but in Final Cut I have this annoying problem. I can't do the blur ahead of time as I need to animate the blur.
I can't even begin to tell you how amazingly urgent this problem is.
Cheers

OK. I see the problem you have with white bleeding in.
Here's a different approach:
Click the film frame icon with the A on it at the bottom right of your Viewer.
Choose Matte > Color. Go to the Controls tab and set the color you want.
Press F9 to insert edit or drag to the Canvas.
Open the Effects tab in the Viewer. Video Generators > Shapes > Circle. Press F12 to superimpose on V2 in your Timeline.
Go to the film frame icon again and choose Slug. Switch the source/destination patch button to V2
Press F12 to superimpose on V3. Right click the Slug clip on your Timeline. Go to Composite mode > Travel Matte Luma.
Click the Shape clip to send it to the Viewer. Use the Softness contols to keyframe your blur effect .
My result using the above method:
This took about 30 seconds to set up.

  • Creating a symbol from shape with gaussian blur = problem

I am trying to create artwork to map to a globe using the 3D revolve effect...the problem is the shape/layer I'm using to create the "glow" effect (compound path filled with white and a gaussian blur applied):
When I create a symbol out of this, here is the problem (note the "excess" areas on the top and right):
...resulting in this messed up globe...
Doing an outer glow effect instead of gaussian blur results in the same thing (its definitely the blur causing this, deleting the shape fixes the problem).  Expanding the shape with the blur results in an image the same size as the bounding box in image 2 above. Any ideas how to address this?
    thx

Yep, that did it! (something strange going on now with the longitude/latitude lines going thru India, but I'll work on that later)...Thank you!

  • Gaussian blur problem separating backgound, foreground

I want to blur the background of sports photos (still too much in focus even with lens wide open). I put the key player(s) on one layer and the background on another, then apply a Gaussian blur, which gives me a white line where background meets foreground. I can painstakingly rubber stamp extend the edge of the background about 10 pixels behind the foreground and that seems to work, but it's painstakingly slow. Is there a better way or even a plug-in?

Because the player also exists on the background it will grow when blurred and you'll see it peeking around the edges of your subject. I tend to clone the background layer around the edges of the subject before doing the blur (as others said, Lens Blur is better) to avoid what you're seeing. You can also protect that area using a mask. Unfortunately there's no simple button to push...
You could try using the history brush in 'darken' mode and pass it over the offending area. But I think you'll end us with an area that looks less blurred around your subject and that will look fake.

  • Gaussian Blur in Photoshop CS5 Corrupting files

We just got brand new systems at work less than a month ago and this event has happened twice since then. When using Photoshop CS5 Extended and using Gaussian blur the file becomes blocky and all layers as well as their masks become corrupted with these blocks. Can anyone help or is there any advice?
    Here are my system specs...

I'm getting this same issue - or a similar one. It seems to only happen when I run the Gaussian blur command, and during the same process in my workflow. It also seems for me to happen when I have made a selection from a layer above that is a smart object.
Let me describe the scenario that I have experienced a couple times in the past week. (BTW I just upgraded to CS5 only a couple weeks ago).
Usually I have a document open with dozens or hundreds of layers. The effect that I am executing when this seems to happen is where I have a group of shapes or placed image smart object layer and I'm creating a shadow layer by making a blank layer below said group or image, making a selection from the above group or image, and then filling the selection in the blank layer with a color - which I then run the Gaussian blur filter on, and afterward warp transform to get my realistic looking shadow effect.
But the problem is in seemingly random instances and on seemingly random documents when I run that Gaussian blur, Photoshop freaks out and craps the bed. And by craps the bed I mean deletes pixel data from multiple layers in my document very randomly, and also generates odd bright colors all throughout the document.
You can see the initial freak out in this screen shot from when I just initially selected the Gaussian blur filter from the menu (but had not yet even clicked "OK"): http://cl.ly/3KTx . The strange thing is that I had just run this series of steps on the above layer which in the screen shot you'll see as "Layer 44", and all was well.
Here's a screen shot showing the file after I closed it out, restarted Photoshop, and opened the file back up: http://cl.ly/3K2C . In case you can't tell, data from several layers all over the file is missing and corrupted.
I'm sure I don't have to explain how exasperating this is, as this represents more than a year's worth of work on a client project, no joke. Fortunately I'm mostly done with the actual site build, but that makes the loss of the artwork files of no less consquence - especially seeing as how I'm not ACTUALLY finished and I did in fact need all of that data to complete the project.
Anyhow, some additional details which may or may not be related to the issue:
    - The issue seems to happen randomly. As stated above the same steps did not produce the error just a few minutes before.
    - I have had this issue with another file this week where I was doing the same processes on another shape.
    - It seems that this is occuring when I make the selection from a layer that is a smart object of some type
    - I also noticed artifacts in the weird colors (after I tried running the processes again, so not in the above screenshot) that were actually design elements from an entirely different document that I was working with earlier this evening.
    - I have filed a bug report.
Dunno what else to describe, but I hope you guys can get this figured out, seriously. I paid way too much for my upgrade to CS5 to have bugs in key software features corrupt my files thank you.
Also, in regards to my system...

  • Script to Edit Gaussian Blur Effect

    Hello
I have a complex piece of artwork which has to be scaled up by a factor of 10. No problem except the Gaussian Blur Effect will not scale.
Rather than go through each path and edit the blur amount (by a factor of 10) I had hoped I could write a script which would iterate through every path and if it had a Gaussian Blur Effect edit the value.
Looking in the AppleScript dictionary and online I can't see any way of accessing a path's Appearance or Effects.
I would be very grateful for some advice on this before I start the tedious process of manually changing the values.
    Regards
    Chris

    Hello Mark
Thanks for your prompt reply. I thought as much. It's disappointing really.
The select filters will not unfortunately be helpful because the blurs are different so I can't select all blurred items because I don't want to set them all the same and equally I can't pick one and select all with the same blur amount because I don't know if I have changed all of the items.
I've just got my head down and am selecting them all individually and editing them!
    Regards
    Chris

  • How do I get rid of the banding I see in Ai's gaussian blur?

There's banding in the gaussian blur, in Ai.
I'm new to Ai.  I created a logo in INKSCAPE, (an open-source free vector program), and the gaussian blur worked fine.  But the people that will carry the logo to the next step, use Ai.  When I send svg files, (or other types of files), from INKSCAPE, the blur didn't carry over.  So I'm trying Ai now... and I'm pretty upset.  Do you have a work-around for this?
I was directed here from a survey I was asked to take part in by Adobe.  The survey window gave me the impression I would be talking to the company... but I tend not to believe that!
When I tried to contact Adobe regarding the banding problem, I was only directed to the forum.  I was already there... and now I wanted to talk to the company.

Try increasing the raster effect resolution to 300 - Effects menu > Document Raster Effects Settings...
If that does not solve your banding issue, post the screenshot and sample file and little more detail on what you are doing.

  • Gaussian Blur is different when Scaling

    Hi Guys,
I have a problem when I scaled one object which has Gaussian Blur effect. Before it is scaled it looks smooth and nice (1st image), however when it is scaled to larger size, the Gaussian Blur does not look the same (2nd image). Please refer to my screen shots for better understanding. Any help and tip is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    David,
Just managing to collect my wits (easier here an hour after midnight).
The Gaussian Blur is fundamentally a Photoshop effect and therefore fails to answer to the Scale Strokes & Effects.
You will need to increase the value as suggested, or you may turn the object into a Symbol before scaling, and then it should behave as you wish.

  • Gaussian Blur

    Hi folks!
I am trying to understand gaussian blur, but can't get it to work how I imagined.
I have a square let us say 200x200 and have added a fill. When I try to apply gaussian blur it stll leaves square edges:
OK! If I drastically reduce the size of the square to say 75x75 - then the problem goes away....
The second image looks square only because of editing it in paint...lol
The problem seems solved; but if I enlarge my square with the applied gaussian blur - then it leaves square edges again. This causes problems when  enlarging objects.
Is there a way around this problem?
    bookie56

What actually happens is Illustrator creates a mask larger than the original object, then applies the blur within the mask.
You can control the size of the mask to a degree via Effect > Document Raster Effects Settings.
If your blur is greater than the area added for the mask, you get hard edges or you start seeing corners peek out around the blur.

  • Gaussian Blur displays smaller in CS4

I'm using Mac OSX and have just upgraded to CS4, from Illustrator 10. Our house style is a gaussian blur of 10 pixels, but it doesn't display correctly in CS4 - it's much thinner. I've had this problem before and just exported from CS4 then created the blur in Illustrator 10. On Wednesday last week I tried CS4 again and the blurs displayed at the correct size, then on Friday afternoon (I had used the blur tool successfully in the morning) it started making the blurs too thin again.
It's set to 100% on all the different projects with 10 pixel blur, so why are my gaussian blurs thinner in some and not others in CS4, but all the correct width in Illustrator 10?
This is really frustrating as it would be such a waste of money not to be able to use CS4, and have to go back to Illustrator 10.

Thank you so much! I didn't even know it displayed rasterised effects in different resolutions. I checked Illustrator 10, which was set to 72 dpi and changed it on CS4 so now my blurs are all the right size.
You have no idea how grateful I am. Thank you!

  • Urxvt's Gaussian Blur

I cannot seem to get urxvt's Gaussian Blur working. It should be enabled with the switch -blr HxV, where H and V are numbers, but this errors with:
    "unknown or malformed option"
Also, the resource blurRadius, doesn't seem to work either. These functions are documented in the manpages, but is does not seem to work. Does anyone have the same problem? I'm using version v9.06 - released: 2008-06-15.

  • Scale gaussian blur

    Hi there people,
I created a logo in illustrator with 2 gaussian blurs. I have a normal thin path with a stroke of 2px and a gaussian blur applied.
It all looks good, but when I scale the logo real big or small, the gaussian blur doesn't scale equally.
Can you tell me how I can set the layer/blur so it whill be exactly the same in any resolution?
I understand it happens because the gaussian blur is a photoshop non-vector based effect. this way the blur doesn't scale up or down.
is there any other way to get a similair blur in illustrator? (or any other solution)
    greets,
    jeroen

Hey Folks -- I'm working on CS3 (mac) and we're having the same problem with scaling the gaussian blur. I checked the prefs and made sure "scale strokes and effects" was checked off as an option but it's still not working. Could that be because the original was done as a filter and not an effect? How can you tell which method was used?

  • Gaussian Blur photoshop effect parameters

    Hello,
Im working on svg format exporter, and what I need to do is to export some of AI effects as SVG filters.
I encountered a problem with Effect -> (PhotoshopEffects) Blur -> Gaussian Blur effect.
When getting the effect parameters there is some binary entry in the dictionary and it is not documented naywhere in the docs what type of data it that.
When serializing a document with GaussianBlur effect info fxg foramt, here is what you can find in the xml :
    <ai:LiveEffect index="0" major="1" minor="0" name="PSAdapter_plugin_GblR">
        <ai:Dict data="B go 1 I PrevDres 300 I dataSize 24 ">
            <ai:Entry name="data" value="AAAAAVJkcyAAAAAAZG91Yj/xmZmgAAAA" valueType="N"/>
        </ai:Dict>
    </ai:LiveEffect>
Attribute value holds the binary data describing the GaussianBlur effect with radius set to 1,1 value.
Can anybody tell how to decode the binary data so that I could dig out the radius value from it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rafał

Ok, I found the problem so will leave the solution, maybe somebody will also need this.
So the value attribute value="AAAAAVJkcyAAAAAAZG91Yj/xmZmgAAAA" is base64 encoded.
When decoded it presents sth like this, where dots "." are zeros (actually below presented data represents gaussian blur effect data for radius == 2, not 1,1 like in previous post):
    ....Rds ....doub@.......
this is same data in hex
    00 00 00 01 52 64 73 20 00 00 00 00 64 6f 75 62 40 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
and last 8 bytes represents a double number in big endian:
    @....... == 40 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
Im working on windows, so after switching it to little endian we get
    .......@  or 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 40
which is our radius in double format.
To be more precise the initial number in the binary data is typeIEEE64BitFloatingPoint, and can be googled in some Python/Apple's header files, here for instance http://svn.python.org/projects/python/trunk/Lib/plat-mac/Carbon/AppleEvents.py.
    Cheers

  • Gaussian blur and Colour Adjust Hue/Saturation cause freeze-up

After using PS Elements 9 for a year, it has started to give me problems, and I can't find a fix for it online.  Choosing Gaussian Blur, or Color - Adjust Hue/Saturation causes PSE 9 to freeze up and stop responding.  This just started today, and I'm baffled.  Some of the other filters have stopped working, but they don't cause a freeze-up.  I've done a disk clean and defrag, but I haven't done anything different to my computer in a long time.  I can try to uninstall/reinstall, but I'd rather not if there's a simpler solution.  I'm on a Toshiba Satelite Notebook, i5 processor,  64-Bit OS Windows Home Premium.  I'd appreciate any insight into this issue.

The editor saved prefs often get corrupted. You may need to rebuild the editor preferences to resolve any conflicts.
Hold down the Ctrl+Shift+Alt keys and simultaneously click on the Edit button on the welcome screen. Release the three keys and look behind the welcome screen by closing it. Or hold down the keys whilst double clicking on PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe (in Program Files x86\Adobe)
You should see a pop up box with the words: Delete Adobe Photoshop Elements Settings File?
    Click on Yes
Then wait whilst Elements rebuilds the preferences.

  • Issue with Gaussian Blur and Spot Colors

Wondering if anyone has a solution to this issue.
Setup: We are using CS4 + CS5 Illustrator on Mac OS 10.5.X and 10.6.X
We created a spot color radial gradient filled circle over a background of the same spot color. The gradient went from 100% of the color down to 2%. We then applied a gaussian blur set to 50 pixels so that we had a nice smooth transition from the circle blurring outwards over the background with the blur blending into the spot color background.
The problem arises when we select "Retain Spot Colors" on the blur. It fills the gradient circle with 100% solid color (but at the 2% range of the gradient so it appears white) and deletes the blur effect. If we don't select "Retain Spot Colors", it converts the blur to process and we get a banding on our printouts where the spot background and CMYK gaussian meet.
We tried the gaussian blur set at 5 pixels all the way up to 55 in 10 pixel increments but nothing worked. We tried different spot colors, same issue. We know we can do the background in Photoshop and import it into Illustrator as a workaround, but we are constantly editing and changing files and would like to keep everything in Illustrator.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this or if there is even a solution. We have not tried Illustrator 5.5 and do not want to invest the money in the upgrade yet. We would prefer to stay with both CS4 and CS5.
    Thank you for any input.

    Hi Mike,
Okay, I have some new information that changes things. I misunderstood what the issue was from the designer. My apologies in advance for the confusion. There are actually two issues but they are somewhat related.
    Issue 1:
We are concerned with banding on the outside of a spot color gradient with a gaussian blur over a patterned background of the same spot color.  We do not  know if this is becasue of the number of pixels on the blur, the version of Illustrator, the blending of the blur into the patterned background, etc... While the banding looks slight on screen it is more pronounced when printed. There are many variables and we have tried everything we can think of to create a smooth transition but we keep getting some banding.
The first image shows what happens when the Preserve Spot Colors in the Raster Effects Settings (found under the Effect menu) is unchecked. We believe that the spot color is being treated as CMYK and causing the blur to be a slightly different color than the spot color background thus causing the banding.
The second image shows what happens when we select Preserve Spot Colors. We lose the blur.
The third image is what we are trying to achieve over a over a patterned background of the same spot color. This was achieved with the Preserve Spot Colors unchecked and also unchecking Overprint Preview in the Separations Preview Palette. However, this brings us right back to the issue with the Preserve Spot Color being unchecked.
    Issue 2:
The issue is that we want to print a spot color gradient with a gaussian blur (over 50 pixels). In order to preview the blur effect correctly we have to uncheck the Preserve Spot Colors in the Raster Effects Settings (found under the Effect menu). However, we have recently found out that this will not work with the software our printers use to do separations. If we check the Preserve Spot Color for the separator, it turns the blur into a large square of color (see screensnap below). We have played around with the Add: x Around Object setting in Raster Effects but it has not helped.
    3. If we do not select "Preserve Spot Color", the blur looks correct but it is no longer a spot color but CMYK when separated.
I hope that isn't too confusing and makes sense. Again, apologies for the mixup on my part originally. Thanks again for any help.

i just made a circle and then applied a Gaussian Blur to it but rather than getting a nice Round blur the result is square
is this possibly the result of the ongoing issues with the AMD - Win8 - Adobe thing?

also, i was wondering if anyone knows if the NVIDIA GPU's are having as much of a issue as the AMD b/c i have a few more days to return this puter
or does anyone know rather it's just a Win8 thing & no matter the processor as long as i'm run'n W8 i'll have these problems?

Hey Jacob ... ya i've been blasting away in Ps as of late and also delving into Id too plus lots'a offline life stuff
