GB 09 - MBP locks up  for 3 mins after hitting record

Basically the whole computer locks up and I can't do anything. Get the spinning beach ball etc. Then after approx 3 mins the playhead starts and I can record and switch to other programs etc. This is incredibly painful and annoying to the recording process...waiting for 3 mins after I hit record.
I have a USB mic (AT2020) and thought this may be the issue however even with the internal mic it does the same thing.
The even bigger quirk in all this is that if I reboot the MBP and load GB 09 I can record instantly on the first try...every subsequent attempt invokes the 3 min lockup...
FYI I have a Mid 2009 MBP with 500gb 7200rpm HDD, 2.8Ghz Core Duo, and 8gb of 1066 RAM
Any help or suggestions will be much welcomed!

Thanks Christoph - I'm at work (with my MBP) but my USB mic is at home...as far as I can tell without the USB mic this has solved my problem!
Thank you soooo much! I'm so grateful I could kiss you...however that may not be appropriate...
I'll mark as solved as soon as I test the USB mic...
Cheers

You will have to restore it form Recovery Mode as it states in the artcile that brought you here.
Alternatively, place the device in recovery mode and restore it to erase the device:
Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.

  • Partner going mad because he's convinced I've tried to gain access to his iPad 4 . It's disabled for 5 mins after he entered the wrong passcode just once . Is this a glitch? I haven't touched it ! Please help?

Ok .... My partner is going mad because he is convinced I have tried to access his iPad 4. He typed in the wrong pass code just once and it has disabled itself for 5 mins leaving him convinced that I have tried to get into it . I haven't. He is really angry and I've done nothing . Now he has turned the wifi off and my kids can't play their xboxes .
Is this a glitch possible on ipad4?
What other possible causes are there?
The iPad has been banged screen down on hard surface a couple of times..... Could this attribute to the issue?
Please will someone answer me? He wont believe me and I haven't touched anything

If the iPad has been "banged down on hard surface" it is possible that just a touch of the screen, or coming near the screen, may have resulted in a false entry. Or it could be the kids.
Either way you need to dump your partner and get your kids out of that environment. Your partner has anger management issues and needs counseling.

  • Sound cuts out exactly 5 mins after lecture recording starts (Tegrity)

I am using software called Tegrity to record lectures.  The recordings come out fine when I use the built-in microphone on my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.8.5).  This doesn't work in a lecture hall.  When I use a bluetooth headset instead (TrueBlue TB-91EX), everything looks fine while I record.  When I save and upload the file, however, the recordings stop playing sound after exactly 5 minutes.  The 5 minute part is what strikes me as odd.  A Tegrity rep had never heard of this issue.
Whether I am using the built-in microphone or not, the Tegrity recorder shows that the sound is being received (the sound indicator goes up and down with volume).  If the bluetooth were disconnecting, I would know immediately; the sound would stop oscillating and a warning would come up (and Tegrity also would tell me when the headset runs out of batteries).  The sound is definitely getting to the computer; for the first 5 minutes, everything is fine; after exactly 5 minutes, however, something is happening.
Is there some kind of bluetooth setting that would cause this to happen exactly 5 minutes after hitting the record button on Tegrity?  Any insight into what could be going on here?

That said, I wonder exactly which audio driver you used. This one should be correct.

  • Only firefox opens, oscillates on and off, and locks up for ~10 min

OK, I open Firefox and 5-8 sites (like 'inbox') start blinking on and off. When this happens the program is locked up. Clicking anywhere does not interupt the blinking. I had a computer guy in and he said "Oh, its not a virus it is your 'content cache' that is overloaded and the blinking is related to overload". So I increased the cache up to 1024 MB, even though I'm only using 125 MB of cache disk space. This all occurs on 3 Macs in the same room, and doesn't happen on Safari ever, so I don't think it is the Vanderbilt University server that I route through to the internet. So it acts like a virus, moves like a virus, and my only option has been reduced to nuking Firefox for another browser, but i would rather not do that. Any thoughts?

  • Spinning beach ball comes up for 10 min after every command, what can I do?

Purchased this MacBook Pro in summer '12. Just had the logic board replaced (following replacement of the hard drive and  RAM). Now it takes 5-10 min for log in screen to appear and a command to open mail or safari launches the beach ball/progress wheel).  Sometimes locks up completely requiring a shut down from the power button. Any ideas?  Thanks!

You brought up a very good point.  Here is the order of repairs that were done to this MacBook Pro purchased only in June '12:  new hard drive, loose cable, new RAM chip, new logic board (last month)
Yep, the old data was restored to the new drive, also likely with problemtic sectors, the problems continued and then when you brought it back they kept the drive in and replaced the RAM and so forth thinking the drive wasn't the issue anymore.
When they replaced the logic board did they need to reinstall a backup? They did not take the backup drive when it was turned in for service and the Genius bar sent it out.
Just used your new drive, the one with the corrupted data on it.
You basically got a all brand new machine.
I'll look into your suggestion that it might be the from the original hard drive failure. Thanks!
Also when you fresh install OS X on the new drive, make sure to use Disk Utility Secure Erase > Zero All Data (move the slider one space to the right) on the Macintosh HD partition, then install as many apps as possible then lastly return your files not from TimeMachine/clone, but only files manually from a external storage drive.
Zero erasing a drive has a benefit of mapping off bad sectors which all drives have and cause beachballing effects.
This way you get as pristine as a machine as possible, all new software and only the return of verified files (also run a ClamXav scan on them before returning)
Corrupted files one can deal with as they can simply be trashed, a program/OS corrupted or compromised is a lot harder to fix.

  • Safari not work for iPad mini after updated to ios 6.1.3

After updated to ios 6.1.3, Safari just not response. I cannot input any web address. Do anyone has this problem? Do anyone know how to solve it?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

My older Iphone 4 is now carrier disconnected, yet my imessage works to other ios users / I can send receive after a power cycle on imessage for 30 mins, after that any further attempts to txt are treated as SMS and of course fail, since thier is no carrier (3G etc)
Of course this iphone is connected on wifi as a means of networking (IP) must be established for imessage to work.
any ideas in Settings/messaging I still have my old phone number (greyed out) and unable to change and of course my apple recognized email account.
    Any insights

    Hi,
I have only ever found the iMessages to be sent when connected to WiFi
I will state though that I have a Pay as you Go contract and do not have Data On (on either of my iPhones)
On the Mac I would use the Sign Out button and then shut the App down, before restarting the app and Adding back the Apple ID.

If You Are Locked Out Or Have Forgotten Your Passcode
iTunes 10 for Mac- Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
    iOS- Understanding passcodes
If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (if You Forget Your Passcode)
If you need to restore your device or ff you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
             necessary to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup. If you do not have a
backup to restore, then restore as New.

If you forgot the passcode, you'll have to restore it to remove the passcode, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212.  If it is running iOS 7 with Find My iPhone enabled, you'll have to force it into recovery mode in order to restore it, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 (or erase it using Find My iPhone on icloud.com).

Im looking for all possibilities to close the compatibility gap because computer freezes at boot and was wondering if there was anything i could do to get this 16GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM to work at 1067MHz or somehow get my computer to run at 1333MHz?...

You don't have a late 2011 MB Pro.
    You have a 2010 version.  Your MB doesn't support 16GB.  8GB Max.
That's what it shows on your about this MAC.
    You need to return the RAM and get 8GB ( 2 X 4GB ) 1066MHz.
Your system bus is set to 1066MHz.
You're having issues because you've installed more RAM than your MB can support.  It's only reading 4GB per bank which totals to 8GB and not 16GB.

  • Will Apple let me exch MBP for Mini after 14 days

It has been about 24 days and I have decided the mini will suite my needs better. The MBP is just to hot to use as a laptop and I am not crazy about the whine batt life etc. Do you think the mac store in SF will let me swap out for the mini?
Or would I be better of selling it? I got the student discount and Apple care.

DEFINITELY expect to pay a 10% restocking fee.
They will most likely do this for you, just be sure to stand your ground and be polite. When you don't get what you want ask for a manager, and be sure to let them know you want to remain an apple customer, but are just overall disappointed with the MBP and would like a different intel computer

  • PC locks up for 5-10 min when clicking anywhere in Files...

    Hello,
I have a client that recently had his User profile in XP Pro copied from a Domain to a Local profile. It appears that perhaps something got corrupted, I have read the instructions on removing the DW cache file and/or the User Configuration File.
Now, when he starts DW version 6, and clicks anywhere in the Files, with any of his sites, DW locks up for 5-10 minutes. We can access those files manually over the network using Explorer just fine.
I should mention that this user has multiple versions of Dreamweaver and CS/Photoshop on his PC.
    Two questions:
1- Will doing either of these procedures require the user to have to recreate his Site Files?
2- Are there any other procedures or items I should look at for this issue?
    Thank you!
    Johnathon

Start with the basics... Are you installing from Software Update or have you downloaded the combo update and manually run it?
I would recommend you download and run the combo, and not use Software Update.
Prior to install, backup everything! Then double check that you have backed up everything! You've been lucky 6 times - don't wait for #7 to be unlucky and render your Mac inoperable before thinking of backup.
Before you run the updater, power down and restart it. Run Disk util and repair permissions. Check the disk to see if there are any issues with it too. If so, repair these prior to updating (post here for more help as disk issues may not be as easy to repair as clicking "repair disk").
Just let it do it's thing. If it hangs for more than 30 mins I'd say restart it (it shouldn't take all that long really - hats off to you for having 12 hrs worth of patience!). If it fails again, come back and let us know we can help you through checking out some logs.
