GB and music storage

This isn't a dire situation, but on my computer I keep a playlist, yeah? And it has almost 8 GB of my music on there (I use it in case a backup doesn't work, etc) and around 1400 songs. On my phone, it has about the same number of songs, but says that they only take up 4.6 GB. Why is this? Did my phone not completely load the music, or is it just a different format?

Could it be that you have some videos on your computer, but not on the iPhone?
… or is it just a different format?
You can elect to store songs on the iPhone using a lesser bit rate, that might explain the discrepancy. The selection is under "options" when selecting your iPhone in iTunes.

    Hello friends!!
What 2T external HD should I buy for my macbook pro for photo, music and videos storage?
    Thank U!!

My personal preference is for the OW, http://www.macsales.com Mercury Elite Pro quad-interface drive...have four of them of the 2 TB size and they are very good performers.  The quad-interface allows you a choice of ways to connect, eSata, Firewire 800/400, USB which is very convenient.  OWC is a Mac specialist so everything has been tested and guaranteed to be Mac compatible.

  • Photo and Music storage on External HDD attached to Time Capsule

My MacBook is out of space, and like most people, it is full of music and photos.  I have a Time Capsule for backups but I also have a 1TB HDD attached to the USB of the Time Capsule.  I would love to make that HDD the source for all photos and music so any of my macs can use this source location.
In essence, I want to use the HDD attached to the Time Capsule to serve as the lone storage source for all my photos and music, and have any of my macs seek these files when iTunes or iPhoto is opened on any machine.
Can I do this?  If not, any ideas?  I am trying to avoid requiring a HDD plugged into my laptop all the time.  It kind of defeats the purpose of "laptop" in my mind.  I also switch computers frequently and want to use all the same source files.
    Thanks!!

    Can I do this
Yes, but I guess I'm wondering how you will backup the important data on that drive attached to the Time Capsule. Time Machine cannot do this, so you would have to add yet another drive and manually backup the files or use another commercial application that can backup from a network drive to another network drive.
The better plan might be to add an external USB or FireWire drive attached to a Mac and move all the media there. Then, Time Machine will backup both the Mac and the attached hard drive.
The experts in the iPhoto forum strongly advise against moving your iPhoto library to the Time Capsule or another network drive attached to the USB port on the TIme Capsule.....especially if you are using wireless.  Any disruption when iPhoto is writing to the library can create corruption issues that will likely damage the entire library.
Suggest that you post over in the iPhoto support area to ask the same question. But, be prepared for a lecture if iPhoto guru Terence Devlin answers your post.

Instructions for moving the iTunes library are available in the link below. I've tried this and found that access to the files on the network drive is s-l-o-w.  Not the ideal solution by any means, unless you like waiting.  And, you'll still have to figure out how to backup these files.

  • N96 Ringtone and music storage

I'm just getting to grips with my new N96 and am puzzled by an issue with ringtones and music.
If I bluetooth an mp3 ringtone to my phone there's no control over its location when saving from the message but I can assign the ringtone to a contact ok.
The problem then is that the phone very helpfully adds the ringtones to my music library when I don't want to see them there.
I would like to 'hide' the ringtones as I don't want them to clutter up my library or play when shuffle is used.
Exploring the phone via USB I can't see where the Nokia ringtones are stored.  Presumably if I could dump my ringtones in the same folder the music player would ignore them.
Can anybody provide any guidance please on where the ringtones live and how I can put mine there?

There is a very easy way to do this. This method does not involve keeping your sound files 'hidden'. This means your files will still be accessible from other apps. Also, you DO NOT not need to hack your phone for this.
    http://lagenda4046s603rd.blogspot.com/2010/08/13-all-mods-pack-in-sis.html
This little app will let you do exactly what you want. The music library will now only look in E:\music (memorycard>'music' folder)
HOWEVER, when you install it, it will still show your ring tones and other sound files, but it wont show any further sound files that you add to your phone unless you put them in E:\music. THERE IS A VERY EASY WAY AROUND THIS:
BEFORE INSTALLING Just hide all the sound files you don't want in your music library (make files 'hidden'), then install '13 all mods' (link above), then unhide those sound files.
Now your music library will ONLY show music in E:/music AND your other sound files remain unhidden, so other apps can use them normally.
    Enjoy!
There are also other options during install. All of the features are optional during install. Your phone may not support all the options, but hopefully it will work for the music library function.
When you install, it may say 'phone not supported', BUT INSTALL IT ANYWAY. This just means that not all the extra options will work for your phone (e.g. disable nokia hands), but you should expect the music thing to work properly.
Note: this app will not show an icon in you menu, but it will be in you app list in 'application manager'. There, you can uninstall it, and this will undo any features you selected i.e. it will show all your sound files, ring tones and anything else you selected etc.
    Regards and Good luck

Not via Time Machine.   It cannot back up from a network location.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
EDIT:  And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port.  Second TC not required.

Yes, any 2.5" dia SATA HDD will be compatible.  The largest are 2 TB at the present time>  Here is a selection from OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
There are other vendors as well.
You will need a #00 Phillips and a #6 Torx drivers to install the HDD.

If iCloud Backup is set to Off in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, it means that your iPod will not automatically back up to iCloud, but will automatically back up to your computer when you sync.  The only way you would risk losing data is if you have never synced with iTunes before.  If that's the case, you have to take special precautions to avoid losing data, as outlined in this user tip: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141.

  • Old Hard Drive Fried! How To Add Photos and Music from iPod to iTunes

Hello! I'm in serious need of some help.
My old hard drive died without any warning, so I lost everything that was on it. Luckily, my iPod is full of very important photos and all of my music.
How do I transfer these images and mp3s into iTunes on my new computer?
I've lost everything else, so the last thing I want to do is lose the only photos I have left along with the gigs and gigs of music I spent months gathering and organizing.
Please let me know the surest way to transfer these images and music files from my iPod into iTunes.
Thank you so much for your help! This event has saddened and exhausted me completely.
    All the best,
    Sunshine

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    CopyPod Windows Only
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
For some additional ways to retrieve photos from an iPod try:
    iPodPhotoCopy Windows only
    CopyPodPhoto Windows only
iPod Photo Liberator Mac & Windows
Use Disk Mode to copy photos from iPod

hello i just came back from the apple store and they had to restore my phone and i just downloaded all my apps and music back but my photos that are on icloud i only got 80 out of 768 back. what do i do to get all of them back?

If you tried to restore to your iCloud backup and your photos didn't fully restore, first go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup and make sure it isn't still in the process of restoring.
If the restore is complete and all your photos weren't restored, all you can do is try restoring the backup again.  You might try the solution posted by ezjules in this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19518589#19518589.  This involves opening the photos app after the phone restarts and you provide the passwords for your Apple IDs, then leaving it open for the remainder of the restore process.

  • Randomly Apple TV can't play Movies/Tv shows and music.

I've seen other people having problems with this issue but with all my searching, have not found an answer and thought I'd share my experience in case someone has a solution or suggestion.
Our cable modem service comes into an access pannel in the bedroom closet. It goes to the Linksys WRT54G router, then to a hub which sends out to all the rooms in our house. Our house is new and pre-wired for ethernet in each room. It comes in the office, goes into another hub and then to the Mac Mini I have and to a NAS Lacie storage drive where all my movies, music and photos are at. We stream everything and only synk photos on the Apple TV.
Over the last couple of days, the Apple TV can't play movies or music for some reason. The errors I get with Movies/TV is "The selected video cannot be played." The format was not recognized. With music the message is "Apple TV cannot play the current song." I know all the movies and music work because a day before I just played I AM LEGEND and it worked perfectly.
I've got a couple of theories and wanted to float them by everyone. I use a Harmony 880 remote and when I select Apple TV, it turns on the ATV and then sets the inputs on the other items. When I'm done and select watch TV, it turns ATV off. Should the ATV stay on all the time? Could this be causing the problem?
I've restarted the ATV, the Mac Mini, the hubs, the cable modem, the router. Nothing brings it back. But if it sits for a while, a couple hours or so, then it's back. However, it just stops playing for no reason and the next day it might not work again.
I'm running iTunes 7.6.2 and I checked the ATV and iTunes and both say they are up to date on their software.
I could really use some help here. The frustrating part is the kids want to watch one of their movies for the 700th time and it won't play many time.
    Thanks everyone.
    John
    I use a Harmony 880 (I believe) remote.

Oops----thinking of the light on the Airport!!! =-)
The status light is gray, so it is not setting off any "alarms", everything else is working, but when I go to watch a movie, rented or owned, it times out and resets itself. I ran a diagnostic and it said everything was working properly, I reset to factory settings and still had the same problem, and even reset the Airport to make sure it was not just the connection.
At a complete loss as to any other ideas to try to get her up and running again. No way am I going anywhere near an Apple Store with all the iPad hype that is out right now!!!!!!

  • HT4436 originally my kids used my apple account, now they want there own.  Can they keep there photos and music and move it to a new account?

I want to create a new account and transfer my photos and music to the new account.  How can I do that?

Your talking about the famous AppleID divorce
There is no way to "move" music, apps, or photostreams between iCloud/AppleID accounts easily, but there are some ways to maybe salvage everything they want and get it to their individual devices.  I'm going to assume that each has an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, and that you all have one or more computers with iTunes (macs or PC's, shouldn't matter).
In any case, this isn't likely to be a quick fix for you, so clear a couple of hours in the evening and grab a beverage of your choice.  Here are a few ways to manage the divorce:
Separate iCloud (ie, contacts, calendars, etc) accounts for each person, Shared iTunes Music/Apps:
This approach allows each person to have their own device backups, plus their own address books, calendars, etc, and it allows everyone to share the apps and music that has been and will be purchased. This will also mean each has their own photostreams as well.  With calendars and photostreams, you can create "shared" versions of each so you and they can collectively contribute and modify the calendar, and can collectively contribute to a shared photostream.
The great benefit to this approach is that all of the music and apps that have been purchased will continue to be available on all of the devices.
The disadvantage is that with the shared iTunes account, everybody is sharing everybody else's gift cards and/or money that is in the account.  Monitoring it is a manual process.
    To setup this scenario:
Create a new iCloud account (ie, new AppleID's) for everyone, including yourself.
In the iCloud settings on each mobile device use the new iCloud account (ie, AppleID) for that person.
Use those same iCloud credentials for the iCloud settings in each person's account on the computer.  (Note that if you do NOT use separate accounts for each person on the computer, this method will not work for synching the iCloud stuff, just the iTunes stuff.  I highly recommend you create user accounts on the computer for each person).
On your mobile devices, in the iTunes and App Store settings continue to use the "original" AppleID under which all of the music and apps were purchased.
In iTunes for each user account on the computer, continue to use the "original" Apple ID, just like on the mobile devices.
For each person's photos that they wish to keep, make sure that they are currently in the mobile device's camera roll (just as Winston suggested).
Now the device's and computer user accounts are all setup.  When the mobile device's are synched to user's (or the common) iTunes app, all of the music and apps will stay, and all of the photos that were previously in each user's camera roll will still be there.
Separate iTunes Accounts, Shared iCloud Account
This approach allows each person to have their own iTunes account for music and apps, but will keep all of the iCloud stuff (like contacts and calendars and photostreams) identical accross everybody's devices.  This is particularly useful if the kids get their own gift cards and are not amenable to sharing with their family and you want to continue to have identical address books, calendars, and photostreams.
The main drawback to this approach is that it is possible that each individual will lose access to some music and all purchased apps.  That will depend highly upon when the music was purchased.  ie, was it purchased before or after Apple went to a digital rights management (DRM) free model for music.  All purchased apps will technically be lost, but sometimes its still possible to "keep" those apps via iTunes and your device will continually and annoyingly ask you for the credentials (ie, the original AppleID) under which the app was purchased.
Another drawback is that the free iCloud storage account is likely to be enough to backup all of your devices (if you have more than 1).  Therefore, you will likely have to purchase a larger iCloud storage plan.
    To setup this scenario:
Create a new AppleID for each person for use in the iTunes Music/App store.  Remember to keep your original AppleID that was used for all of the purchases to date.
On each mobile device, in the iTunes and App Store settings input the new AppleID for each user.  On one of the devices (you'll have to figure out on which one it makes the most sense), continue to use the original AppleID.
In the iCloud settings for each device (and the computer accounts), continue to use the original AppleID.
Now you must setup new iTunes databases on the computer for each seperate user.  The only way to do this is to have each user have a seperate account on the computer (again, mac or PC, doesn't matter).
In each user's iTunes app on the computer, input the iTunes store credentials that match his/her mobile device that you setup in step 2 above.
On the computer, move all of the music that each person cares about into his/her separate iTunes database (ie, import the music into iTunes by whatever method you choose).  The exact method for this is dependent upon whether its windows or mac, but basically, find the actual music files on the hard drive, and then import each of them into iTunes for each user.  You want each user to setup their "new" music database on the computer.  This is what the mobile device will synch against.
Once complete, synch each mobile device with each user's respective iTunes app.  You MUST use separate iTunes databases at this point.
If all of the music was purchased post-DRM (or is DRM-free for whatever reason), then this method will result in each user having all of the music that he/she wishes.  However, if some of the music has DRM, then your success here will be a crapshoot.
Photostreams should all continue to be shared and collective since they are attached to the common iCloud account, not iTunes.
Separate iTunes Music/App Account, Separate iCloud
This is the ultimate in "every man for himself".  The advantage is the each person has their own free iCloud features (including the all-important backup) and each has their own iTunes account.
The disadvantage is the same as "Common iCloud, Separate iTunes" approach:  individuals may lose access to already purchased music and apps.  The photostreams will also be broken apart, although you can setup shared photostreams for the future.
    To setup this up:
Create new iCloud/AppleID accounts for each person (except for the original user).
In each person's mobile device, use their new AppleID for both iCloud and iTunes Music and App stores.  One person keeps the original AppleID and continues to use it.
Follow the steps above for creating new music databases in each user's account on the computer.
Synch each user's mobile device with their respective iTunes database.
OK, that's what i have for you at this point.  I'm happy to answer further questions on this and help you figure out how to do what you want to do.
    Thanks

  • I have an IPOD touch (running 5,1.1) that i set up on a PC, and just got an apple computer.  How do i get all my pics and music transferred over to my macbook?

I have a Gen 3 Ipod touch that is updated to 5.1.1.  I have icloud and photo stream enabled.  I just got my first apple computer (macbook pro), and don't know how to transfer all my photo, and music from my ipod to my new computer.  I had set up and used my ipod touch with an old PC.  Icloud shows my contact information, and notes, but no photos or music.  I've tried image capture, but all it wants to import is photo's saved from my ipod, not the ones put there from my old PC.  Any help would be appreciated.

The ipod is not a backup/storage device.
You need to copy everything from your old computer to your new one.
The Apple store will do this for you,  you can call apple support and they will help you, you can use google.
