GBIC/SFP

Just a small question..
If we have a 10GB interface speed on a switch.. the SFPs all the same can support 1GB and 10GB or they're different models?
Thanks,
Ahmed

Optical Transceiver Modules, i.e. SFP/GBICs/etc, are speed specific.

Select the transceiver so the link's end points have the same speed and the correct reach (link length).

I have several Catalyst 3524XL switches with LX GBICs running on Multi Mode Fiber. I am adding a 3750G into the network and would like all of the 3524XLs to connect to this switch. What SFP device do I use to connect to an LX GBIC on MMF?

    Hi
From my personal exp we do have 2950s installed with LX GBICs patched up with 3750S SFP which is again LX version.
We did try patching them up with both SMF and MMF patch cords in which both of them brought the link up.
The point to be checked out here is one of the sides will be having SC connector (3550)the other side will be of LC connector (3750)..
But do remember to use MMF patch cords while patching up SX SFP modules coz we had tough time trying them with SMF patch cords..

  • GBIC/SFP Not Linking

I'm rather unexperienced in the optical networking, so I'm looking for some advice.
I manage one end of a fiber link to our internet provider, on my end I have this switch:
    cisco WS-C2950G-48-EI
    12.1(22)EA2-C2950-I6Q4L2-M
    It has a GBIC labeled 30-0703-01 1000Base - LX 1300nm Laser
From the GBIC there is a cable with the same style connectors on both ends that goes to a fiber patch panel, then on to my provider.
The patch cable is 2 strands bonded together that are yellow, with blue ends, and has printed on it the text Optical Cable Corporation .... Single Mode .... Riser
I'd like to replace it with this switch:
    WS-C3560G-48PS
    12.2(52)SE-IP-SERV-CRYPTO
This switch has a SFP labeled GLC-LH-SM 30-1299-02
And I have a patch cable that is orange with tan connectors (black boots) on both ends, one end of this cable fits the old GBIC/Patch Panel, the other, the new SFP. (it was sold to me as N316-01M Duples Fiber Optic Patch Cable - 1M LC/SC 62.5/125 Fibre) The packing slip says "FPC MM 62 2F LC SC 1M" "CERAMIC OFNP ZIP (2.0MM) CRN"
When I plug the new SFP into the patch panel with the orange cable, I don't get any link lights on the SFP, when I link the two switches together with the new cable, I get a link.
What can I do to diagnose this problem, and make this work?

What can I do to diagnose this problem, and make this work?
As Tom mentioned you need a Single Mode Fiber Patch Cable instead of N316-01M Duples Fiber Optic Patch Cable - 1M LC/SC 62.5/125 Fibre) The packing slip says "FPC MM 62 2F LC SC 1M" "CERAMIC OFNP ZIP (2.0MM) CRN".
As far as i know a receiver interface have lens which is bigger than the Core diameter of Single mode fiber (8-10micron) so you get the link but it is possible that when you try you get errors (You can try by connecting your 2 switches with you Multimode Cable and test with some traffice.)
But when you are trying to connect to a patch panel which is single mode, you are trying to send light from a 62 micron pipe to a 9 micron pipe which is very difficult. So you have no link.
If you want to try , A simple experiment will tell you how easy is to couple ligh into a Multimode cable, Just keep a MM patch cable in front of a light bulb and you can see light other end . Try same thing with Single mode cable you will see nothing.

  • GBIC/SFP w/ MTRJ Connector for 3560G Switch?

I have a WS-C3560G-24PS switch with four SFP ports and I want to use the SFP ports to connect it to our backbone. Our fiber distribution boxes use ST connections. I have several ST to MTRJ 62.5/125 multimode patch cables, but I cannot find a SFP GBIC that uses a MTRJ connector. Is this possible and/or supported or do I have to get new cables & GBIC's?

I am unaware of any SFP transceiver modules that use MT-RJ connectors. They all use LC style.
To interface your SFP's LC connectors to the distribution boxes ST connectors, you can purchase fiber jumper cables with ST on one end and LC on the other.

  • GBIC/SFP new question..

What is the difference between the two? Too much other technical jargon being used on cisco's site to help me accutately understand. Thank you.

Edison, I am sorry - you are normally pretty good, but I think the way you have but this could lead to confusion.
SFPs ad GBICs do exactly the same job, and can work with the same media. The difference between them is physical. The SFP - Small Formfactor Pluggable - is smaller than a GBIC, and on equipment takes around the same space as an RJ45. SFPs are effectively replacing GBICs on new equipment, as you need half the panel space to fit one.
Take a look at www.sisteme-bis.ro/img_produse/imgprod_385.jpg for a GBIC and www.sisteme-bis.ro/img_produse/imgprod_384.jpg for an SFP. These two are both Single mode LX types. Also you can see that a different connector will be needed for an SFP, as the old ones are just too big.

    Hi all ,
what is difference between the following optical products . Which product is best .how do i campare advantagous and disadvantagous
    a) X2
    b) SFP with TwinGig Converter Module
    c) SFP/SFP +
    d) GBIC
does all the above have two variants for single mode and multimode ?
whats the difference between singe mode and multimode fiber ?
    Thanks

The differences between X2, sfp, gbic, etc transceivers are typically just physical.  Which type to select relates to what has been designed in by the manufacturer to be used in the equipment platform you have selected for your network (See link to Compatibility Guide below).  Generally speaking, each transceiver style will support the various specifications for link length and fiber type.

Singlemode fiber has a smaller optical core, enabling longer link lengths using expensive lasers.  Multimode fiber has a larger core, designed for shorter link lengths, but uses lower cost LEDs and Lasers.  The link below is a great resource for getting an understandable overview of fiber optics.

  • Disabled GBIC SFP module

I have 2 WS-3750-48PS switches in a stack, i have today installed 2 x MGBSX1 sfp's to link new fibre to other building on the grounds.
I have now got 2 types of error messages showing :-
    EVENT NOTIFICATION -
Description: Gi1/0/3: This port has been disabled because Non Compliant  Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) connector detected.
Recommendation: Replace connector with cisco compliant Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) connector. Refer switch technical documentation to determine cisco compliant connector. Enable the port again.
    SYSTEM MESSAGES
unfortunately i haven't got the full message but it was saying thet there was a CRC error in the EEPROM and that maybe a software update would rectify the problem.
The stack is running 12.2(35)SE5-IP-BASE software at the moment and i have seen on a Cisco page that ALL cwdm sfp's are compatible with my switches (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/modules/ps4999/products_tech_note09186a00807a30d6.shtml#support3)
Should i upgrade the software to 12.2.55-SE3 ?

The reason for the Non Compliant error message is that the MGBSX1 sfp is not a "compatible" product with the WS-3750-48PS switch, per the following compatibility document:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/transceiver_modules/compatibility/matrix/OL_6981.html#wp137837
According to the document you referenced, the following statement may be the reason you are receiving CRC errors on the port.
    "Use Third Party SFP Modules
The use of third party SFP transceivers with Cisco devices is not supported by Cisco. Cisco-approved SFP modules have a serial EEPROM that contains the module serial number, the vendor name and ID, a unique security code, and cyclic redundancy check (CRC). When an SFP module is inserted in the switch, the switch software reads the EEPROM to verify the serial number, vendor name and vendor ID, and recomputes the security code and CRC. If the serial number, the vendor name or vendor ID, the security code, or CRC is invalid, the software generates this security error message and places the interface in an error-disabled state."

  • GBIC SFP Module

    Hi,
i have got GLC-SX-MM 1000Base-SX SFP Fiber Module, so is it 10/100/1000 Mbps or just 1000 Mbps?

    Hi Anand,
    It is just 1000 MBPS.
And AFAIK all the 1000 Base SX GBIC modules only operate at 1000 MBPS and if any gbic module is supposed to support 10/100/100 it is not fiber it should be a RJ45 Base module having UTP5 cable and not fiber cable.

  • Gbic SFP Module doesn't work with SFE2010

Have a question, we have installed 2 SFE2010 via Fiber, i notice that there is no link acttivity on the switch, I have tested the fiber with Dlink Media Convertor and it works. I really need help on this. What do i do ? i have tested with 1 side SFE2010 and the other side Media Convertor. It doesnt work. Do i need to enable the SFP port manually, by default is enabled. Fiber is a multimode. so is there SFP and there Media Convertor

    Joel,
You have not provided lots of specifics about the SFP modules in question. Some 100 Meg SFPs require you to manually set the port speed in the GUI before the SFP will be recognized, so you can try that. Otherwise, suggest you open a case with the Support organization. • Mini-GBIC/SFP and VLANs

I am going to purchase two Cisco SG200-26P switches with a MGBSX1 transceiver for each and connect them together via fiber.  Am I correct to assume that the fiber port is configurable for VLANs?  So if I configure four VLANS (1-4 on both switches, port 1 on VLAN1, port 2 on VLAN2, etc.), I can configure the fiber port to be on all four VLANS so that traffic for all four VLANS will move between the two switches?

  • Copper SFP and GBIC for GigE 15454E Cards

    Hi Folks,
According to the documenationon on the Cisco site it appears that the GE 4 port CE card (15454-CE-1000-4)and the GE 2 port ML card (15454E-ML1000-2)only supports optical GBIC/SFPs.
I would like to connect these interfaces into a Cat switch which has 1GE copper interfaces. Does anyone know whether the copper GBIC/SFP will work with these cards?
Also would you know whether the 4 port CE card works in the 15454E chassis. The documentation seems to indicate that it does but there does not seem to be a 15454E item code for the card.

The only 15454 cards listed as compatible with the 1000BaseT SFP (ONS-SE-ZE-EL) are the ML-MR-10 & CE-MR-10, per the reference guide (url below).

  • GBIC to SFP

Can I connect a GBIC port to a SFP port ?are there suitable fiber cords for the same?

There are also some GBICs/SFPs that are designed to work on different frequencies than the standards.
CWDM does this and occasionally I find that people end up with one of one type, and the other side is another type.
Just take a look at their names and you can usually figure out what they are.
This page seems to be a good quick list of common GBICs and SFPs.

Searching for vendors of "genuine Cisco" SFP/GBIC products we've noticed amazing pricing disparity! Can anyone comment on their experiences in the marketplace.
Thanks for your help - Steve

I've heard some rumbling that not all GBIC/SFP products will work in Cisco switches because they are not "genuine Cisco" and Cisco switches have some way of checking to make sure they are.
Starting with the 2960, 3560 & 3750, Cisco switches will interrogate the SFPs by computing the IDProm value.  If the IDProm value of the SFP is incorrect, the port goes into error-disable.
I can't seem to get any search hits confirming this. Can anyone point me to a document that references this?
I won't post the command here but the command can be found in this forum.  I have seen one guy approach the manufacturer of the SFP+ and he asked the manufacturer to reflash the SFP+ so it'll show up as Cisco.  And it worked.
